Red Sox Designate Austin Brice For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | July 16, 2021 at 5:37pm CDT

The Red Sox announced they’ve designated reliever Austin Brice for assignment. The move clears 40-man roster space for the previously-reported promotion of top outfield prospect Jarren Duran.

It’s the second time this season the Sox have designated Brice for assignment. The righty passed through waivers in May and remained in the organization. Between his pair of big league stints, Brice has made 13 appearances and tossed 13 2/3 innings of 6.59 ERA ball with subpar strikeout and walk rates (18.8% and 10.9%, respectively). It’s the second consecutive down year for Brice, who joined Boston on the heels of a solid 2019 campaign with the Marlins.

The Red Sox will have a week to trade Brice or expose him to waivers. He accepted an outright assignment after clearing waivers two months ago, but rejecting that assignment would’ve meant forfeiting the remainder of his $870K salary. Should he pass through outright waivers a second time in his career, Brice could elect free agency while still collecting all of his remaining guaranteed money.

Duran isn’t in the lineup tonight. Why bring him up then?

Just read: He’s sitting because Lefty on the mound

Jordan Montgomery is holding left handed hitters to a .165 batting average, they aren’t going to start Duran against that in his first career game

Santana next. Bring back Munoz or give Chad DeLaGuerra a shot. But please no more Franchy. After a blistering return to AAA, his swing and miss is rearing it’s ugly head again.

I’d still take a shot on Franchy. He can’t be any worse than Santana. At least Marwin has been excellent with the glove this year, but if Duran takes over CF, Kiké moves to 2B/1B, Marwin’s playing time goes way down, especially if Arroyo stays healthy and keeps playing well.

Rizzo has reverse splits and would cost too much. Not happening with bloom and I’m personally happy that we won’t be getting him. He’s a solid player, but not worth the cost. Not to mention he’s an anti vaxer and kind of annoying to begin with.

Awesome. Hold it against a guy because he exercises his god given rights. The “tolerance” of the left is overwhelming…

I just think a lot of people are getting extremely sick of others imposing their will on them and trying to tell them what to do. We shouldn’t really be vilifying people for exercising their rights, especially when it comes to this vaccine because regardless of how you feel about it, it is a highly debatable issue with valid arguments on both sides. People are treating those who don’t want to get vaccinated like evil criminals, and that’s just not right.

HBan22 – Wouldn’t it be nice if life was as simple as you just made it.

If people are actually vilifying others is that not their right? There is no right opinion there are just opinions that have facts that help to support the belief.

For some reason, the world has escalated the vilification of political beliefs since Trump was elected and as a result it appears any political comment will be vilified by the other side.

My view is that that people are free to say and do as they believe until they endanger others. If the vilification comes in the form of strong disagreement, then there is no harm no foul. If it goes beyond that then there is an issue. Also, if convincing proof exists that shows a person not vaccinated puts others at risk then it becomes a legal issue beyond the scope of opinions.

I have seen both sides of the debate up close in that I’ve seen a loved one of a friend infected by COVID from a non-vaccinated person with horrific results and I have a college room mate who lost his 91 year old mother a couple of days after receiving her COVID vaccination so he refuses to get vaccinated.

Is there one right answer? No! Personal choices are great until they impact the life of another person. At that point, the law should be defined to do what’s best for the country superseding individual freedoms that endanger others. Regardless of your political choices it’s time to do what’s best for the country and that can only be done when an agreed upon solution can be found. So the debate will continue and both sides should expect to be vilified because that’s the way most people behave in this country today. It’s not right but it is reality unfortunately.

This year teams are only allowed 3 players to be called up. The Red Sox have seen Brice. I would assume they will want a look at Seabold, Raynel Espinal, Kaleb Ort, Jose Adames, Marcus Wilson, Potts, Rosario, Ronaldo Hernández, or someone else they intend to add to the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 draft.
