Latest On Yankees’ COVID-19 Situation

By Mark Polishuk | July 16, 2021 at 3:22pm CDT

JULY 16: Testing today has turned up zero new positive cases, manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including Alex Speier of the Boston Globe and Bryan Hoch of MLB.com). However, Boone added that six Yankees players have been confirmed positive within the past week and are expected to miss at least ten days, suggesting that follow-up testing on Judge, Urshela and Higashioka has confirmed their positive results. Friday’s game against the Red Sox will be played, with yesterday’s postponement to be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 17.

JULY 15, 5:20 pm: Judge is indeed the Yankees All-Star in question, The Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham reports (via Twitter).  Gio Urshela, and Kyle Higashioka are the other two Yankees in COVID protocol, ESPN’s Buster Olney tweets.

JULY 15, 5:05 pm: Rafael Devers and other Red Sox All-Star representatives were asked to undergo additional COVID-19 testing after being told that one of the Yankees’ All-Star reps tested positive, ESPN’s Marly Rivera (Twitter links) reports.  This would indicate at least one of Aaron Judge, Aroldis Chapman, or Gerrit Cole — Cole was replaced on the All-Star roster but was still present during festivities.

JULY 15, 3:39 pm: Tonight’s game between the Red Sox and Yankees has been postponed due to a COVID-19 situation within the Yankees’ clubhouse, as originally reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link).  Major League Baseball released an official announcement about the postponement, noting “positive COVID-19 tests within the New York Yankees organization.”  There isn’t yet any word about a make-up date for tonight’s contest, and it isn’t yet known if any other games in the scheduled four-game series could be in jeopardy.

Speaking with The Athletic’s Lindsey Adler (all links to Twitter) and other reporters, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said the club has six ongoing COVID-19 cases, all of players.  Cashman confirmed that the three players currently on the Yankees’ COVID-related injury list (left-handers Nestor Cortes Jr. and Wandy Peralta, and righty Jonathan Loaisiga) all tested positive for the virus, while three other potential cases are pending confirmation of positive results.  ESPN’s Marly Rivera reports that “at least two” of the positive COVID tests were delivered by Yankees position players.

Most importantly, Cashman indicated that the cases appear to be asymptomatic, saying “As of right now, everybody is ok.”  The Yankees as a whole have passed the league’s mandated 85% vaccination rate , though Cashman said that only “most” of the six players had received vaccines.  Cortes, Peralta, and Loaisiga had all been vaccinated.

Cortes and Peralta were placed on the COVID-19 list earlier today, while Loaisiga’s placement came back on July 10.  Loaisiga has yet to rejoin the team from their road trip in Houston, Cashman said, as the right-hander has been quarantined.

This is the second time the Yankees have been hit with a COVID outbreak this season, after eight players and coaches tested positive for the virus back in May.  (New York manager Aaron Boone told Adler and other reporters today that Gleyber Torres’ positive test at the time was actually a false positive.)  That outbreak didn’t result in any postponed games, as while COVID-IL placements have still been rather common this season, today’s Red Sox/Yankees matchup is the only the eighth game of the season to be postponed for COVID-related reasons.  The other seven postponements all took place prior to April 19.

I am appalled that you would kill a poor little symbol of peace. You meat eaters have no shame. Get on here and brag about murder. I suppose you use an assault rifle shotgun too. If it looks scary it should be illegal and all guns look scary. You should see my beautiful knife collection. They are a work of art. Really Art makes them.

Do rock dove taste good? Had duck once it was awful. Been told it had to have been prepared wrong. I guess I will have to try again. I also wanted to write that above before it was written by some plant killer. They kill vegetation to make tofu that should be illegal.

There’s a number of sportsmen on the board. But – yeah – “that guy” does exist.

I cannot compare duck to dove as far as table fare goes. I’ve been pretty adventurous with waterfowl (other stuff too) but I can’t think of a species that “tastes like” doves, uh?

Dove is good. In general. Really light. Really small too which is an obvious drawback, compared to say a goose. Notably smaller than teal even.

Interesting: if I call it “feral pigeon” no one tries it. If I call it “rock dove” I get compliments. Same bird. Different commercial.

Frankly, what the Stros did was immensely cheating and will endure that barrage for the rest of their careers. But this constant jabbing at Houston fans as if they were somehow a part of it and the lack of recognition how well this team plays WITH fans in the stadium. Even at places like the NSFW aura that is Yankee stadium really dismantles strange weirdos like you who act as if that team killed a baby.

I hated Bregman, Yuli, Osuna, plenty of their players years prior and this just makes me adds Correa now too. But like let it go dude, dont waste your headspace on it lol. Cheer your OWN team.

Plus it’s inaccurate to say Altuve will never be in the Hall of Fame. He might not be, but he was a great player before and after the trash cans. I believe he’s the best 2B this year.

        • Nuanced Jamesian

He’s pretty darn close to HOF already – 4-5 solid seasons, he’s in. Should wind up with at least 2,400 hits, might be able to hold at .300 plus BA, besides everything else he does

Electronic sign stealing is a bit like steroids in that people think it’s magic and make scrubs in to stars. The reality is it’s a marginal improvement.

Look at the astros this year.. I’m assuming they are not cheating, and they are still an elite offensive team

        • Zerbs63

If it’s only a small marginal improvement why would you go to great lengths to cheat?

        • Dustyslambchops23

Baseball is a game of inches, so a marginal advantage could be the difference between winning a playoff series or losing in game 7.

you should live in India or Mississippi. Go and visit a hospital there. These players should either get vaccinated or take the year off at half pay. Those should be the options. 85 per cent rate is a joke.

        • marcfrombrooklyn

And, it is also fair to describe the vaccine as being effective if it reduces the severity of the disease. As you said, those who get COVID-19 after being vaccinated are much more likely to be asymptomatic or have mild symptoms and be much less contagious. That’s a success.

I understand needing to quarantine those who test positive and isolate those exposed to them even if all of those people were vaccinated and may be asymptomatic. It stops the virus from finding it’s way to someone who is not vaccinated or for whom the vaccine is less effective because they are immunocompromised. What I don’t get is why anyone in and around a major league team is unvaccinated at this point. On Baseball Night in New York, one of the reporter, Sweeney Murti I believe, said that one of the Yankees who tested positive is both symptomatic and unvaccinated.

You can still get and spread covid if you are vaccinated. The vaccination works by giving the body the ability to recognize Covid and fight it far more effectively. That’s why it’s so important that everyone gets vaccinated but because of all the politicizing, fear mongering and disinformation, it’s not as easy as just getting it out there for people to take even if it’s free. It’s pretty sad that Covid is unique in this since. No other vaccine has ever gotten so politicized. This particular vaccine was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Isn’t this essentially how having a virus and building immunity from that exposure, works? If a vaccine only adds what would naturally occur from having been positive…why give it to people with prior cases? It should eventually dissipate to the place of other coronavirus.

        • Dustyslambchops23

There are certain viruses that build forever immunity, there are some that mutate enough and or don’t produce a strong enough immune response, so doesn’t last.

Flu and colds are a good example.

Because having the Covid Virus doesn’t mean you developed a strong immune system response.. the vaccines were tested for the strength of their response.. they are better at causing the body to build immune defense than catching the virus.. and since they protect better than having the original disease against the variants.. it is important to the community that as many as people as possible get vaccinated.. for their communities.. ““So that immune response might be bigger, better and longer lasting than just getting the infection one time,” ” https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2021/01/419691/covid-19-vaccine-fact-vs-fiction-expert-weighs-common-fears

Apparently these vaccines aren’t as great as we were told, because anyone that wanted to get vaccinated can easily get vaccinated by now, and that’s supposed to pretty much guarantee you won’t get extremely harmful Covid symptoms. If someone chooses not to get vaccinated, we can’t put bubble wrap on them forever. It’s their choice, they can deal with the consequences.

Side effects of vaccines generally present themselves in two months, which is why that is the length of time before legal authorization can be given. Full approval can be granted after six months. These vaccines have been around almost a year now, and 2 billion people have taken them with no serious side effects. I think you can relax now based on that sample size. You’ve taken many other vaccines in your life that have not been nearly as well tested as these.

A problem is some people get complacent once vaccinated. Many reports of people skipping their second shot. I have friends who planned social events with people from multiple households even though 14 days had not passed since their second shot, and even though they didn’t know the vaccination status of all the guests. I’ve seen many pictures of young people gathering in maskless crowds, etc.

MLB has not been telling us the specifics about the positives, such as the time lapse between the player getting dosed and the player testing positive. The league just says they’re doing great on vaccination. They don’t tell us if the player was being an idiot or not.

Its not only them that deal with the consequences.. all variants come from infected people.. all deaths come from infected people.. and all people get infected from someone who was infected… not getting vaccinated affects the whole community.. Just look at the hospitals Jammed in Missouri… meaning others my die because the ICU’s are full.. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/many-in-missouri-are-unvaccinated-hospitals-are-paying-the-price-as-delta-variant-spreads

At a certain point only a percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated to acheive herd immunity where spreading the virus inevitably slows down, stops, weakens, etc.

Huh? We have a pretty good idea what percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated to get to herd immunity: The Delta variant is so contagious that it’s likely 90% or more. So be a patriot and go get the needle for the good of the country! Consider it a war effort.

I’m not going to get in to the covid debate because it quickly deteriorates. But if they are only testing players that haven’t been vaxed, then simply remove them from the 25, call up replacement players and get the show on the road.

You have a stadium full of people sitting side by side, we’ve agreed to take risks at this point, I really don’t understand the knee jerk cancellation at this stage.

It’s the contract tracing and the retesting that gets the games canceled. It’s not a couple of dude’s catching COVID. We don’t even know if any players have tested positive. If they’re positive they go on the COVID DL and everyone knows.

Stop testing all together. Those of us who wanted to be vaccinated have been. Those who didn’t haven’t. People will still get sick. That’s life, but we can’t go sticking swabs in people’s noses forever over a virus that over 99 percent of people survive, and which we have a vaccine for.

Ted, that’s a moronic comment. People who have been vaccinated can still catch it, and especially if they’re older, might not have the great response that younger vaccinated people would have. Plus, the longer you let the virus spread in your unvaccinated population, the more chance it has to mutate into a strand that can overcome the vaccine. And then we’re right back where we started. Please trust real science and get vaccinated. Fight for your country by getting a simple little needle!

Throw in some seriously bad press regarding blood clots and the AZ vaccine and vaccine hesitancy became a thing. The result is bugger all of us have been vaccinated and over half the population is currently in lockdown. The seemingly ultra contagious Delta variant is doing its thing. Stay vigilante.

Health misinformation, including disinformation, have threatened the U.S. response to COVID-19 and continue to prevent Americans from getting vaccinated, prolonging the pandemic and putting lives at risk, and the advisory encourages technology and social media companies to take more responsibility to stop online spread of health misinformation.

I totally understand and support the owner of this website removing comments from weird antivaxxers. But why would he also remove comments from the science-based and accurate pro-vaxxers? It would be like removing “2+2 = 5” from your website, but then also removing “2+2 = 4” because it’s somehow controversial. Let’s spread real science here in the small way we can! (Otherwise great website. The level of analysis is amazing and appreciated!)

Because maybe what you think is real facts others would argue that it’s disputable. Just as scientist are arguing about herd immunity and how deadly this virus is to the vast majority of people. Just because you think it’s so doesn’t make it so. How many times has that imbecile Fauci stayed one thing and than flip flopped? Yes this virus is real bad especially for the elderly and we still have no control over it thanks to communist China for not being transparent but we also must allow people to decide on their own what they choose to inject in their bodies. This debate can go on and on but that’s why theirs always two sides and somewhere in the middle.

You typing that demonstrates my point. You think scientists are arguing about this. They are not. 99% of scientist all agree. For some reason people like you choose to look at the 1%. There is no debate.

Wait. Maybe climate change caused by humans isn’t really happening. Maybe the moon landing was staged. Maybe there was no holocaust. Maybe the earth is flat. Maybe the rump won the election. And maybe, just maybe, the Orioles will win the World Series this year.

Well said Whyhayzee. Boggles my mind that so many people ignore scientific consensus to instead listen to weird fringe outsiders.

Judge must like the IL so much that he will do anything to get there, For the nitwits who don’t get this, it is only a joke, bad taste perhaps, but still just a joke.

I’m glad they’re playing tonight like the rest of the major leagues. Yesterday’s game was gimmicky and stupid. MLB thinks the whole world needs a Red Sox – yankees game. No. It’s the last thing anyone cares about.
