Mets Designate Billy McKinney For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | July 16, 2021 at 3:36pm CDT

The Mets announced they’ve designated outfielder Billy McKinney for assignment. The move creates active and 40-man roster space for third baseman J.D. Davis, who has been resinated from the 60-day injured list as expected.

New York acquired McKinney from the Brewers in late May amidst a series of injuries in the outfield. Between the two teams, the left-handed hitter has picked up 202 plate appearances and compiled a .213/.282/.415 line with eight home runs. That’s right in line with his career .225/.288/.430 mark (91 wRC+) over parts of four seasons at the big league level. McKinney has flashed some of the power potential that once made him a fairly well-regarded prospect, but he’s been a little too prone to strikeouts (26.3% career rate) and hasn’t drawn enough walks (7.8%) to cement himself as a regular corner outfield option for clubs to this point in his career.

New York will have a week to trade McKinney or expose him to waivers. He’s out of minor league option years, so any team that acquires the 26-year-old would have to keep him on the active roster or again make him available to other teams.

Why do some idiots get mad about some idiots, being idiots to other idiots, while sitting with idiots, talking about how everyone in the world, are pretty much idiots? To be frank, it’s just so idiotic.

metzfan if I had to guess I would say you are 12 years old. Half of enjoying Sports is criticizing and finding fault and giving your thoughts on what you would do differently if you were manager to shut the hell up and learn what the world is like. If you go to a restaurant you are allowed to say you don’t like the food without your moron friend telling you you aren’t a chef should have no right to criticize the food.

If you really are serious when you say “Half of enjoying Sports is criticizing and finding fault”, you really must be a lot of fun to be around. And while I tend to be very critical myself, I’m nowhere near as bad as you apparently are. And that includes at restaurants, unless there actually is something wrong with the food.

Wasn’t that name voted on in a poll? They had to rename themselves from Mets because they weren’t able to sell merchandise with that name on it, so they had to change it (well, they didn’t HAVE TO but they decided to).

metzfan it has nothing to do with the 40 man roster. It has to do with the fact he has no options left to be sent to the minors.

        • dswaim

They could’ve optioned Guillorme and released any of the aforementioned to create room on the 40-Man and active roster. They have Villar, Davis, Peraza, McNeil and Guillorme on the roster now for 2B and 3B. One of those guys are going to get squeezed out of playing time either way

How so? Players talent changes according to the situation? Most players take the same swing no matter what. This is just some old school notion that’s never been backed up by any data.

        • Nuanced Jamesian

“Most players take the same swing no matter what.”

Yes, most players do; that is why you don’t want those guys up situationally, or, really, on your team at all.

The good players adjust to try to achieve what is needed in a given situation, and the GREAT players achieve it more often even than their normal high level of performance.

        • Nuanced Jamesian

For the last several years, guy I want to see at the plate when it matters is Yuli Gurriel (and Brantley more recently).

Do you know that, lifetime, Yuli, with the bases loaded, is hitting .510?

Well, he was, anyway, a minute ago. But he just did it again, so it’s higher now.

        • Nuanced Jamesian

Yuli Gurriel had a lifetime BA with bases loaded of .510, until a few minutes ago when he did it again so it’s higher now 🙂

        • Nuanced Jamesian

Yuli leads MLB with 2 strikes in count, BA .278

You must have heard 100s of players talking about shortening up, etc, with 2 strikes. Your position on this one is COMPLETELY untenable, and, in fact, overwhelmingly, demonstrably, wrong.

I don’t think the current front office is putting much stock in Davis at all, given the (in my view) high likelihood that they’ll end up trading for Bryant or Donaldson. They’ve never come across as particularly committed to him when asked during interviews. They were even talking about giving Rosario reps there before he was traded.

I don’t think it’s necessarily connected to McKinney anyway. He did a decent job as a band-aid, but his days as a Met were always numbered barring additional injuries.

As a former Met fan & a present Braves fan, please stay away from Donaldson. Another huge contract, this time with Minn & now they want to give him away. These huge contracts are buyers remorse after only a year. Let Minn eat his contract like a bad clam.

McKinney did a good job for the Mets. He filled in when the team had a million injuries and had some key hits for the ballclub to keep them afloat. With injuries happening every day, would think he wouldn’t clear waivers. I see a team like Cleveland as a fit since he costs nothing. and they need any bats they can find.

metzfan If you mean Peraza, that would be foolish since he has played great defensively and hit a bunch of clutch home runs to win ballgames and McKinney hasn’t done anything in well over a month and they have enough outfielders now and I probably going to add an infielder which will allow Davis to move to the Outfield if he doesn’t go with a trade

I can absolutely see the Indians giving him an audition down the stretch. If he plays well, he can be in the plans for next year because they badly need someone to prove themselves as a long term option. If he struggles, he can be part of the 40-man roster purge this winter to make room for guys that need to be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
