Giants Place Johnny Cueto On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | August 11, 2021 at 6:40pm CDT

The Giants have placed starter Johnny Cueto on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 9, with a right flexor strain. Infielder Thairo Estrada has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take his place on the active roster. Cueto’s injury is minor, manager Gabe Kapler told reporters (including Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group), with the team hoping he’ll return after missing just one start.

Cueto has rather quietly put together a solid season for the first-place Giants. The 35-year-old has tossed 104 innings over nineteen starts, working to a 3.89 ERA/4.22 SIERA. That’s an unexpected bounceback since the two-time All-Star struggled in 2020 after missing large chunks of the 2018 and 2019 seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery. Cueto has seen a bit of an uptick in his swinging strike rate relative to the past few seasons, and he’s had some of the best control of any pitcher in the league. The righty’s 5.5% walk rate is fourteenth-lowest among the 78 hurlers with 100+ innings pitched this year.

With Aaron Sanchez designated for assignment over the weekend, the Giants’ rotation depth has thinned out in recent days. Anthony DeSclafani is expected to return from the IL when first eligible to start on Friday, Kapler told reporters. He’ll rejoin Kevin Gausman, Alex Wood and Logan Webb in the starting five. The Giants don’t have an off day until next Thursday, so they might have to turn to Sammy Long or Tyler Beede to cover for Cueto’s missed time over the next week.

And yet, they’re still in first place, are 8-2 in last ten with a 3 game win streak, that will probably be extended as they’re playing Arizona…

I keep hearing about this “collapse”. Now when is this collapse supposed to happen? I’ve been hearing about it for so long, I would have thought it would’ve happened by now.

I was an advocate early on for the collapse but I see (saw more like after 50 games) that this team means business

I bet a Benjamin on the Giants in May when it was
50-1. Now that’s more like 16-1. Still I feared a June Swoon. It didn’t come. It’s now August and they’re still doing well! Not counting my chickens yet, but the San Diego Chicken sure looks like toast!

I must have missed the final score of the Marlins Padres game today. What was it again? Oh that’s right, 7-0 Marlins. Good thing the Padres have such solid pitching that they don’t need to score runs…
      Oh, wait

Says the guy whose team lost 7-0 to the Marlins today. Are you sure SD will make the playoffs bro? By the way, has your team ever been relevant? Not really, unless you count 1984 or 1998. But the Padres didn’t win either series. What is the franchise record in World Series games? 1-8? Simply outstanding!

Tatis will go on the IL again, the Padres will implode — like they always do. You will have to wait until next year for your fantasies to have a better chance. Enjoy seeing the Giants in the playoffs there Ace!

I was wondering where you were, we know you’re not a Padres fan. What are you? A disgruntled baseball fan who probably never made the team, cause of your mouth piece? Sounds about right. I’m sure it’s tough to swallow right now seeing the Giants in first with the best record in baseball. Lol

Cueto is always fun to watch with the shimmy and his hesitation. That he uses so many motions and has such good control is incredible.

I think the Giants are using the IL to give their starters some well needed rest. First Deciafani and now Cueto. Wood might be next. Baggerly has been writing about the starters exceeding pitch limits from the prior two years.

      It’s just smart coaching.
Then there’s the other way. The Mets might be the first club to come to mind.

As a Padres fan, it’s a nice surprise to see the Giants overachieve this year. Yeah I said, “overachieve”, because no one expected them to be this good in the off-season. Wish them the best of luck the rest of year.

It’s funny that you guys are laughing about 7-0 to the Marlins to a rookie that hasn’t thrown this many innings in a season and a 5th starter. If it was 7-0 to a number 1-3 starter then I would worry about it.

It sucks we lost half their starters in the last few months to injuries but it’s a long season.

You would be more concerned about a good starter doing that to you then a 5th starter? I think you have it reversed

There’s a difference between laughing at a 7-0 loss and laughing at a troll doing his thing on the back of a 7-0 loss. Just saying. No troll. No laughing.

I have nothing against the Padres, or most of their fans. I’d love to see them win a WS title some year. Some year when the Giants aren’t a contender that is. In fact I root for all teams that have never won a WS.

But, unlike the troll above, I also don’t go to articles about other teams and rag on them. Imagine the Padres having the best record in baseball in mid-August, and some Giants fan repeatedly commented on Padres articles about how laughably bad the Padres were.

It’s absurd, so the only recourse is to point out the failures of the the Padres, the posters supposed favorite team. Although that is questionable. So if you see me rag on the Padres, it will only be on articles about the Giants in response to the troll.

I just find it amusing that Padres fans are talking more smack than Giants or Dodgers fans on basically any NL West relevant article. Wonder if the trolls just find the Padres to be a good team to act like they’re fans of?

@foppert You may be right, I haven’t paid a ton of attention to the names of the posters. 4-6 weeks ago the Dodgers fans were really laying it on but I think the Giants still being in first they finally see the legitimate threat

Not going to make that big of a difference if they are 10 games out. They won’t sweep the Giants in their final 8 to 10 games against. But I do agree, it’s going to be a battle.

If the Giants play .500 ball for the rest of the season, the Padres would need to go 31 – 15 to tie the Giants at 97 wins. It’s possible, but I just don’t see that happening. The Dodgers have a much better shot. They’d need to go 28 – 20 to tie.
