Padres Claim Shaun Anderson Off Waivers From Orioles

By TC Zencka | August 7, 2021 at 1:15pm CDT

The Padres claimed right-hander Shaun Anderson off waivers from the Orioles today, both teams announced. The Padres optioned the right-hander to Triple-A El Paso.

Anderson’s time with the Orioles was brief, as he made just seven appearances totalling 10 innings after being claimed off waivers from the Twins. Anderson surrendered 10 earned runs on 17 hits and five walks while striking out seven. He’ll provide depth for the Padres, whose pitching staff has struggled to stay healthy this season.

As for the Orioles, they made a number of their own roster moves today, reinstating Ryan Hartman from the injured list, recalling Isaac Mattson, and designating Conner Greene for assignment. Greene, 26, made just three appearances for the O’s, yielding six earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.

I think it’s more likely he strikes out.

His xwOBA results on his slider are pretty decent and he only throws it 59% of the time. He also has good spin rates on all of his pitches.

I’d bet they try to Matt Wisler-him (i.e. tell him to throw the slider 80-90% of the time) and see how it plays.

How is his xbOFA tho? That is a much better predictor of future performance.

Padres did that with Austin Adams too, he now throws his slider about 90% of the time as opposed to about half the time when he was with Seattle and it’s worked out pretty well so far.

Take what you do best and then do it a ton isn’t a bad strategy.

How hard does Anderson throw? I don’t know about y’all, but did anyone else get a little over-hyped after Anderson’s debut?

Around 92-94 if I remember correctly. Had a hard slider that could make batters look silly, but nothing much else. If he couldn’t locate the strike zone he’d get absolutely pounded.

[Said in the voice of Norm MacDonald] Hey Padres, that’ll work out better than that Scherzer guy.

I still think Scott Boras should face sanctions from MLB for leaking the trade negotiations between the Padres and Nationals for Scherzer.

Anytime you see one of the insiders say “according to sources” or something along those lines, somebody has leaked something. It’s not exactly some big controversy.

The Padres probably just didn’t want to part ways with Abrams or Hassel for a 37 year old rental.

Hey, Padres fan’s. Thanks for Mateo! The guy seems to have a bright future. Man, when he hit that triple yesterday against the Rays he flew around the bags faster than anyone I’ve ever seen. Wow!

killertofu, Jorge Mateo runs like a racehorse! One of the fastest guys in MLB. The Padres stuck with him as long as they could, he just wasn’t hitting well enough. In his defense, he wasn’t getting regular playing time. I wish him well in Baltimore.
