Phillies Place Three Players On COVID-19 Injured List

By Anthony Franco | August 27, 2021 at 5:29pm CDT

The Phillies announced they’ve placed three players — right-hander Zach Eflin, utilityman Luke Williams and catcher Andrew Knapp — on the COVID-19 injured list. Righty Enyel de los Santos and catcher Rafael Marchán were recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, while outfielder Jorge Bonifacio was selected back to the roster. The three players were all fully vaccinated but have apparently tested positive for the virus, relays Todd Zolecki of MLB.com (Twitter link).

Eflin just returned from the 10-day injured list yesterday after missing five weeks with patellar tenditis. He was scratched from last night’s scheduled start due to recurring trouble with his knee and will now miss some time due to viral issues. When healthy, Eflin is one of the Phils better starters, having pitched to a 4.17 ERA over 105 2/3 innings. Knapp and Williams, meanwhile, have gotten sporadic playing time in reserve capacities — Knapp as the #2 catcher, Williams in a multi-positional role.

Bonifacio returns to the big leagues just two days after being passed through outright waivers. The 28-year-old was called up last week and made two appearances before being designated for assignment. Because he was selected as a COVID replacement, Bonifacio won’t have to go on waivers this time around if he’s sent back down whenever the Phils are able to activate someone from the COVID IL.

methinks Eflin’s only on here until his knee situation improves.

oh, scratch that if he is indeed positive. that said though, could’ve designated Randolph and Hall as the replacements.

Agreed on Randolph and Hall, they should see what their younger guys can do since they most likely will not make the playoffs this year.

ive said the same thing on the TGP, but there’s an argument that these guys could provide more than those who they would be replacing, so you can perhaps still make a run at a playoff spot AND see what some of the young guys can do. replacement players dont require designation for removal from the 40, so they retain roster flexibility anyway. i dont think this team has used this rule to add an extra player yet, though Boni looks to be the 1st.

Hall seems like a better fit over Miller rn, especially since Miller went 0-5 last night with 3 Ks. Miller has like a 30+ K% this year, and he doesn’t hit enough to justify that, imo. Matt Joyce is still on the 40 and I feel like he’d be an easy DFA.

he is, MLB.com has him on the 40 man roster tho. The phils 40 man roster actually doesn’t really seem that full anyway, taking a closer look at it. I’m sure they’ll be fine with calling up players if they need them.

Not sure if it matters or not but the Braves will get to set their rotation against the Brewers in the divisional series. It looked like the Phillies division to win a few weeks ago…Getting vaccinated keeps you outta the hospital. My lady works in an ER in Texas. The hospitals are full of Trumpers and the mislead, unvaccinated people. Kids too

“U.S. Army veteran Daniel Wilkinson, of Texas, died of a treatable illness because the Covid crisis left him without an available ICU bed even though he lives 3 houses down from an emergency room and 60 miles away from some of the greatest healthcare facilities in the world.”

If you absolutely refuse to get the vaccine because you don’t understand science or don’t trust doctors or medicine, etc. no one is going to hold you down and jab you with a needle…BUT don’t go the hospital after the horse dewormer doesn’t work and THEN ask science, medicine and doctors to save you…

        Deal?

      Just so you know, @holtz;
One can have worn a mask, gotten vaccinated, etc while still voting for Trump.
There was more than just the Covid stuff to think about last election.

Ah, forget about it. No one wants to actually discuss things. So much easier to just categorize people to fit a specific narrative, I guess.

      So…go Joe G! Go Didi.
Phils might have another run in them yet.

My girlfriend is a professional artist. I have met numerous…uh, interesting people via her.
She introduced me to these kind of Super Hippy/SJW folks. All kinds of things they “can” or “can’t” eat/wear, go to all these protests, etc.

Yet they are not getting the shot.

In the end, people are complex.
Rarely are they neatly & efficiently categorized. Ya know?

The challenge is taking the time to understand that & try to understand someone else. I get it. Not easy.

How many people die from here on in has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with personal choices about behavior. Same as before.

I see you spent your evening finding posts of mine to respond to. Hope it was fun? Although to be straight up on it, you are my least fav Ducky Groupie.

I am sure that would be your experience here, bro. But in a year of posting on MLBTR, I have interacted with at least a dozen of the fellas whom I would invite into my home if they were ever in Minneapolis.

I am also quite sure that is a completely foreign concept to someone like you.

well them being vaccinated means they need to miss 10 days, so not really worth the manipulation at this point, save maybe for Eflin. again, they dont ever seem to use the Covid IL for 40 man spots, just 26 spots.

also a player being on the covid IL doesn’t mean they have covid, usually it seems like a precaution with Philly most of the time, this instance not being one of them of course.

Trump was also a national embarrassment for 4 years. He also said it would all magically disappear by Easter last year. He also perpetuated fictional voting fraud, and called for an insurrection at the capitol, with his booger-eating cult followers. So there’s that.
