Cubs Select Trent Giambrone

By Steve Adams | September 29, 2021 at 11:43am CDT

The Cubs are set to select the contract of infielder Trent Giambrone, reports MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link). It’ll be the first call to the Majors for the former 25th-round pick.

Giambrone, 28 in December, has had a rough season in Triple-A this year but will bring plenty of versatility to the Cubs’ bench for the final few games of the year. In 271 plate appearances, he’s posted just a .174/.274/.255 batting line with three homers, eight doubles, a triple and five steals. He’s shown more power than that in past seasons, swatting 12 homers in 2017, 17 home runs in 2018 and 23 home runs in 2019.

Defensively, Giambrone has primarily been a second baseman both in 2021 and throughout his minor league career. He’s seen brief spells at third base, at shortstop and in the outfield corners this season, but he was deployed all over the field on a consistent basis back in 2019. That season saw Giambrone log between 103 and 334 innings at six different positions: all four infield spots and both outfield corners.

To make room for Giambrone on the active and 40-man rosters, Chicago placed third baseman Patrick Wisdom on the COVID-19 injured list.

You must be the dumbest baseball fan ever.
They are giving him his first “Big Show” appearance to say we appreciate you and will be releasing you after years end.

        GFYS moron. Have some class

Just a nice gesture before they release him

A better gesture would have been him retiring to open up a spot for someone else at AAA!

He grounded into double plays just six times
and recorded one sacrifice this year in AAA.

Exactly. He made the majors while we go to our 9 to 5’s. Good for him.

I want to bet that within 5 years, this guy is some sort of coach/scout/analytics guy in an org. Possibly with the Cubs. He’s got a resume that just screams “future manager of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

yeah, looks just like a goodwill move more than anything, but cant hate on player/team for it. they don’t just promote anyone to the Majors after all.

He should start not come off the bench. Might as well use him as much as possible. I’d rather have Brennan Davis who should’ve been called up after Joc Pederson was traded. I’m looking forward to see Davis on the opening day roster for 2022

Davis wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire in AA when Pederson got traded. He seems to be hitting well in AAA (small sample size) but I could see why they didn’t promote him to the ML Club. He also lost a season in 2020, so let him get consistent reps in at AAA and see what happens come spring training 2022.

The game he had in the futures game turned his season around. And he’s been great in AAA so far. No reason to hold him back. If he doesn’t make the Opening Day Roster then the cubs will have major issues again with their top prospect.

I predicted the cubs would be awful. You guys predicted Arenado couldn’t hit away from Coors and Goldy was going to decline and Waino and Yadi were too old.

Weird September 29th flex when the Cubs threw in the towel at the end of July.

Wrong!! They threw in the towel the day Ricketts ordered Hoyer to reduce salary and trade Darvish.
Poor poor Ricketts, fanboy more concerned with making money than giving the team a chance to win.

Tom Ricketts wish he was a fanboy. He’s less of a fan of the cubs than someone who had never watched a single sports game. Tom Ricketts saw one game in 1984 in the bleachers. He thought he was a fan after that. Real sports fans know it’s in their blood. Tom Ricketts a complete joke. I hope his father cuts his kids off from spending his money. Takes over for all his silver spoon spoiled kids.

It’s a shame that the silver spoon Ricketts kids only care about money. They stopped caring when the cubs won.

Well, Arenado is having one of his worst years. His first two years in the league and 2020 aside he’s having his worst year ever. Lowest AVG, OBP, SLG, and HR.
