Rangers Designate Hyeon-jong Yang For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | September 16, 2021 at 3:39pm CDT

TODAY: Yang has been outrighted to Triple-A Round Rock, the Rangers announced.

SEPTEMBER 15: The Rangers announced they’ve designated southpaw Hyeon-jong Yang for assignment. The move creates space on the 40-man roster for corner outfielder/designated hitter Willie Calhoun, who has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

Yang has been on and off the big league roster a few times this season. The 33-year-old signed a minor league deal with Texas over the offseason after a generally strong 14-year career with the Kia Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization. The Rangers selected Yang to the majors a few weeks into the season but he was designated for assignment around six weeks later. He’s since been back for a pair of brief stints on the MLB roster.

Working in a swing role, Yang has tossed 35 1/3 frames of 5.60 ERA ball. He’s posted worse than average strikeout and walk numbers (15.6% and 10%, respectively) while struggling to miss bats at the big league level. Yang has an identical 5.60 ERA in 45 Triple-A innings, although he’s posted better strikeout, walk and swinging strike numbers in the minors.

Calhoun returns after missing nearly three months upon fracturing his left hand on a hit-by-pitch. Injuries have mostly derailed his past couple seasons, as the 26-year-old hasn’t managed to build upon the offensive progress he showed back in 2019. The final few weeks of this year will be big for Calhoun, who is eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter. Manager Chris Woodward recently suggested Calhoun’s lack of playing time lately could make determining whether to tender him a contract a difficult decision, so he’ll look to make that an easier call for the front office with a strong finish to the season.

Wow this doesn’t surprise me at all but feel like he’ll be back in the majors next year at some point.

Yang? Maybe, but he also might return to Korea to pitch again for the Tigers. They’d pay him more than he’d get in MLB. I recognize this isn’t just about money. He already left money behind by leaving the Kia Tigers. He wants to show he can pitch at the highest professional level, and being a MLB player has always been a goal for him. He succeeded at getting to the Majors, but he didn’t succeed at pitching well. He may want to give it one more shot, but I’ve always questioned if he has enough stuff.

Jury is still out on Calhoun. Peters, Garcia have corners nailed down, and Thompson,Martin, and Walker in the wings. Calhoun will not be expensive and Rangers have lots of money next year and I believe that will be used for a DH, Two starters for the rotation, at least 2 bp pitchers, and perhaps Story, Correa, or C Taylor.

No chance Rangers sign Correa. You’re also forgetting Corey Seager

Speaking as a rangers fans, why would they ever spend money on a big free agent like story, Correa, Seager, etc? They’ve still got a ways to go before they’ll be competitive again

Really quite simple. You have to start somewhere as you do not have what you need on the farm. You sign FA young enough to still be there in 2-3 years, all the above fit that and if you don’t add veteran pieces to current stock you attendance drops considerably around 40-50 % and you cannot pay the bills or get the tv contract. People forget that neither Astros, Dodgers, or Padres or Braves built their team totally from the farm. They chose their core and added veterans to help build contenders. With Garcia, Peters, Lowe, Kinet Falefa, Taveras, Jung, Heim and Huff you have your future core. Then as Josh Smith , BubbaThompson, and Ezekiel Duran get ready you incorporate them. This is exactly the Astro blueprint that people suggest be followed.

The Padres don’t have one home grown player in their starting lineup. All have come through FA or trades.

I agree they’ll sign a big FA or 2 and they need to start somewhere. Hoping they land Seager. The thing that scares me is saying that their future core starts with Garcia, Peters, Lowe, Taveras, Jung, Heim, and Huff. Hopefully there are a few solid MLB careers from that list. That’s far from a core though

In current a future core, you have Kiner-Falefa, Foscue, Josh Smith, Y. Hernandez, a bit further down E. Duran, Hauver, White. II think they will try to add at least one of Castellanos, Soler, Schwarber, Baez, Correa, or Story. Utility piece in Canha, C.Taylor or Pederson, and add one of Syndergaard, Rodon, or Rodriquez, one of Gray, Matz, M.Kelly, or Bundy and perhaps some depth with V. Velasquez or Urena. They will need a utility person for the corners, perhaps Shaw, Miller, or Lamb and two or three relievers.Ideally, in order my shopping list would be Rodon, Schwarber, Gray, C. Taylor and Shaw. A trade with Miami for Alcantara, Lopez, Hernandez or Thompson or with Baltimore for Hall or Santander would not be unwelcome. Maybe take on contracts of Myers or Hosmer from SD if they send Abrams or Weathers back, if FA signings are not going as planned.

          RF A. Garcia
          CF Peters

          2B Story
          SS Kiner-Falefa
          3b Jung
          C Heim

          Bench: Shaw, Solak, Huff/Barnhardt, Taveras

          Rotation:
          Rodon
          J.Gray
          Dunning
          Hearns
Alexy/Otto/Howard if these are not ready insert Bundy or Kelly here

The Rangers should not be assuming Peters has a corner spot. He’s had a nice little power surge, but one his minor league record says is more mirage than reality. He wasn’t even slugging .400 for the Rangers AAA affiliate. Even with the nice power surprise, his .199/.220/.440 slash line with the Rangers shouldn’t suggest he has a lock on anything.

You’re absolutely right about Peters. School is still out on him, and for that matter, I’m still unsure about the consistent play of Garcia. Over the years, I’ve seen many Rangers come in have a good season, then fall off a cliff, ie, Odor.

And Danny Santana but still right now it’s Peters spot to lose.
