Braves Activate Jorge Soler

By James Hicks | October 21, 2021 at 4:03pm CDT

Outfielder Jorge Soler has been cleared by the MLB Joint Health and Safety Committee to return to the Braves active roster, the club announced. He’s active for tonight’s NLCS Game 5, with Cristian Pache removed from the active roster in a corresponding move. Soler is not in the Braves’ starting lineup but will be available off the bench.

Soler had been ineligible since Game 4 of the Braves’ NLDS matchup with the Brewers, when he was removed from the team’s starting lineup only a few hours before first pitch. He was later confirmed to have received a positive COVID test and to have entered isolation. Defensive whiz Pache replaced him on the Braves’ roster for that series and was again designated as Soler’s replacement on their NLCS roster.

Still only two years removed from leading the AL with 48 home runs in 2019, Soler has experienced something of a renaissance since moving to the Braves at the trade deadline. After posting a measly .192/.288/.370 line across 94 games with the Royals, the 29-year-old regained his form with the bat, putting up a .269/.358/.524 triple-slash in 55 games as the Braves’ primary right fielder. He moved into the leadoff spot for the Braves in September and had remained there for the team’s first three games against the Brewers. Eddie Rosario and Dansby Swanson have served as the Braves’ leadoff hitter in Soler’s absence.

How Braves manager Brian Snitker plans to use Soler moving forward remains to be seen, though Snitker has described Soler as “ready to go” and as “a nice weapon off the bench” tonight (via Jeff Schultz of The Athletic). Indeed, his return clearly strengthens a bench that had been relying on light-hitting utilityman Ehire Adrianza as its top pinch-hitting option. Soler’s absence had actually solved something of a dilemma for Snitker; outfielders Rosario and Joc Pederson have both had wildly productive postseasons, and neither is considered a viable defensive alternative to Adam Duvall (the 2021 NL RBI champ) in center field.

Should the Braves advance to the World Series, Soler will likely be Snitker’s first choice at DH, his primary position in Kansas City. How the outfield would shake out for games played in Atlanta — or, indeed, for potential Games 6 and 7 against the Dodgers — remains very much an open question. Pederson had been the odd man out for the first three games of the Milwaukee series, while Rosario was left out of the starting lineup for Game 4. A glut of productive outfielders is, of course, an enviable problem for the Braves to face, but it does make Snitker’s job a bit more complicated.

Though the Braves managed to build their present 3-1 series lead over the Dodgers without him, Soler — alongside fellow mid-season additions Pederson, Rosario, and Duvall — played a major role in turning around what had appeared to be a lost season in Atlanta after losing Ronald Acuña Jr. to a torn ACL on July 10. With their fully remade outfield, the Braves went 37-20 after the deadline en route to securing their fourth consecutive NL East title.

As much as I believe he is a better bat, no because my whole point was to improve the defense. Duvall is better defensively than Soler.

My guess is Joc will be the 4th outfielder/pinch hitter. Maybe not because it’s “Joctober” but I don’t think anyone will deny a lot of his production this playoffs has come in a pinch hit role. I guess it all depends on whether a lefty or righty is starting against the Braves. With the Dodgers that doesn’t usually matter though. You should never set your lineup based on who they are starting unless it’s Scherzer or Buehler. Man… Imagine where the Dodgers would be if they didn’t swing that Sherzer/ Turner trade now. Buehler would be their only consistent starter assuming they kept using Urias in this dumb relief role. You know analytics are out of control when the best team I’m the league starts using the MLB wins leader as a reliever and still can’t beat a team that finished 18 games behind them.

Wouldn’t really say they are a true braves fan, more of an imposter.

Pache wasn’t getting playing time and as such was making zero impact. Soler coming back can be a huge plus if his bat is ready to return.

Play Rosario Duvall and Soler and keep Peterson on the bench, And I think you need to have Rosario lead off.

That’s great but I’m not sure they need him. Maybe if the reach the world series he can DH. Eddie Rosario is the NL version of Kiké Hernandez. Joc Pederson is doing pretty good for himself as well.

The Braves have no power bench threat now this is the guy off the bench will make pitchers think twice about pitching around someone as he could pitch hit at almost anytime.

Smacky; nothing compare to Soler and sometimes teams don’t like using the back up catcher. Soler is a big force in the batters box as he had what a 48 home run season in 2019 and pitchers and managers will be on notice.

What he does be being on the bench stops Los Angeles from walking the 8th place hitter and than taking chances against the prior bench pitch hitters. In my opinion in a right situation Soler in the on deck circle causes a pitcher to go right after the 8th place hitter.

The dude said the Braves have no power on their bench. I said Contreras does and so does Adrianza who led the league in PH homers. Yes, Soler is a much greater threat but you can’t just call what else is on their bench slap hitters

Nice add for the Braves, all the pressure is on them now, the Braves llost after a 3-1 lead last year, if the Dodgers can just win tonight, the pressure will ratchet up and offset the home field advantage given to the division winner.

I think the pressure will be on the dodgers the rest of the series. The dodgers have to be perfect for three games all the Braves have to do is win one of three the odds are heavily in the Braves favor.

I don’t think the pressure really changes until game 7. Game 6 would be a full house of Braves fans; and Ian Anderson looking to make up for his poor start.

Of course all the betting sites and media going pick dodgers every game as they picked dodgers from the beginning it’s too late to change their picks now

Snit moved Albies up. This is hilarious! Maybe Snit also told him to stop hitting the ball in the air. If that is the case, this should be good lineup.

I think they moved Albies up to stop dodgers from using a left handed pitcher against 3 left handed batters in a row. Albies is better from the right side. So a left handed pitcher to face Rosario is going get stuck facing Albies from the right side and if they try and turn Albies around Freeman is right behind him.

Regardless, just look what happens when Albies gets on base. He has a terrible uppercut swing and a free-swinger to boot. So much potential, but makes himself worse with the homerun mentality.

Super weird reading about Duvall as a capable centerfielder. He came up as a first baseman without a place to play (Belt), and it was no sure thing he’d play a passable left field once he ended up in Cincinnati (Votto).

Ok, the Dodgers are going to win two out of three in LA. They had a bullpen game and three Chris Taylor home runs, plus two from Pollock, despite being Dow 2-0 in the 1st now they are up 11-2. So while the Braves still are more likely to win the series, it is time to flip the narrative. Both teams have scored an equal number of runs in this series. There are two very good teams here, the Braves might have a slight edge in batting and the Dodgers an edge in pitching. Will a little rest resurrect Dodger starters? We will find out this weekend!

This series was designed to be deja vu all over again; however, the storyline will be the Braves taking the series (hopefully).

Personally, a lot will be said when the Braves play the last two games at home this time. Dodgers can’t cheat on the road (i think).

    Game 6 has to be
    Soler
    Albies
    Freeman
    Riley
    Rosario
    Duvall
    D’Arnaud
    Swanson
    Anderson

D’Arnaud & Swanson need to pick it up, and that’s why the Dodgers are that good when you have Taylor at 7 and Bellinger 8….

Anderson is going to need to get out of that 1st inning (ERA 5+ 1st inning) and be more efficient, if he doesn’t it’s going to be up to Morton. Buehler has never pitched in Sun Trust. Braves have had a 3-1 lead 5 times in these types of scenarios and lost all 5 times. Please win once.

      Move Albies down!

I would 100% move Freeman back to the 2nd spot. He needs more at bats. I believe Riley should remain 4th but move Ros to the third spot.

      W/o Pederson:

      Soler
      Freeman
      Rosario
      Riley
      Duvall
      D’Arnaud
      Swanson
      Albies
      Pitcher
