Charlie Morton Undergoes Surgery To Repair Fractured Fibula

By Anthony Franco | October 29, 2021 at 11:35am CDT

Oct. 29: Morton underwent surgery to repair the fracture, tweets Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. He’s expected to be ready for Spring Training 2022.

Oct. 26: Braves starter Charlie Morton fractured his right fibula during tonight’s game against the Astros, the club announced. He’ll obviously miss the remainder of the World Series, but the team announced that he’s expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Morton got the start in tonight’s World Series opener. He was struck in the leg by a Yuli Gurriel comebacker that turned into a groundout to lead off the second inning. That ball evidently broke Morton’s leg, but he incredibly remained in the game to strike out Chas McCormick and induce a Martín Maldonado line out. Morton even returned to the mound to start the bottom of the third, punching out José Altuve before swelling in the area made it impossible for him to continue.

The Braves will have to rely on their bullpen to finish off what they hope to be a series-opening victory. A.J. Minter has worked a couple innings in relief of Morton, with Atlanta holding onto a 5-1 lead midway through tonight’s game.

Atlanta will obviously have to navigate the rest of the series without their top starter. Max Fried is already lined up to start tomorrow’s Game 2, with Ian Anderson the most likely candidate to take the ball in Game 3. The Braves added Kyle Wright to their World Series roster, and he’s capable of working multiple innings after starting for the entire season. Wright has worked almost exclusively in Triple-A this year, though, so he’s not an ideal option to start a World Series game. The Braves will also be able to add another arm to the roster as an injury replacement, but they were already reaching into their depth after fourth starter Huascar Ynoa suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last week.

It’s a relief that the Braves’ immediate announcement noted that Morton is expected to ready for the start of next season. Still, it’s a disappointing conclusion to another strong campaign for the well-respected hurler. Morton will be back in Atlanta in 2022, having signed a $20MM extension last month.

    Unbelievable!

This makes game 1 even more important to take.

    Give Strider a shot!

It is obviously hopeful thinking, but if the Braves take game 1, they may take the series in 4. Morton’s absence may not matter. The Braves saw enough crazy injuries this year and survived. Why not 1 more series?

Baseball G-ds want the Astros to win, but the Braves need to change that narrative.

Thoughts and prayers for you too. Blocked!

Do you think they will just use Smyly as a straight up stater now is necessary since Morton is done? It seems like Chavez should be the bullpen game guy and Smyly pitched well enough to earn a start with Morton out IMO.

Smyly’s problem has been giving up homerun. He has actually been pretty decent all season. I think ultimately, it will depend on where the Braves stand by the end of game 3. I’m in favor to give Smyly a chance, but it is risky given the Astros elite offense. I say, live and try not to die with your future. Give Muller or Strider the ball.

Just please no Newcomb and especially no Touki.

Honestly where is Muller? I have to assume he hasn’t been pitching because he should have been added long ago during the Dodgers series when Ynoa went down.

Then they had another chance when they swapped out Webb for Wright.

Muller is the guy but I have to assume he’s not ready for action at this point.

I have never made accounts with similar names to Fever Pitch Guy. Literally never. There are some people doing that but those are actually people that are tired of the redundance. Apparently for different reasons. I really don’t care about it anymore. I just find it funny that he thinks muting me is something good for him when all it means is I can create a trap that ONLY he will ever fall into. FPG, I have never trolled you or created other names. You are in denial about how many people think you are callously mocking people’s genuinely heartfelt feelings in your posts by copying and posting the same thing every time. You are trying to pass it off as some kind of religious persecution. You are pretending people dislike your repeatative, repeating, redundant comment because you say the word “prayers.” Guess what? I pray, too. It has nothing to do with that. It’s the redundancy people are sick of. I know you say “It’s a common phrase that represents America” but it is not. Almost all of us live in America. It’s not the same thing as the star spangled banner. I’ve never heard it and most others on this site haven’t. It is a callous way to discuss someone’s injury by cutting and pasting. Anyway… I am sure you know there are truly terrible people in the world. They can privately identity themselves by typing “hopes and prayers for a speedy recovery.” It’s not like they can type that by accident. As far as I and many other people on this site are concerned that is a code phrase to admit that. Maybe you can slightly change your phrase? Or maybe you will just admit who you are. We will see. I personally hope you are better than that.

I’m not going to keep up with who mutes who. Too much. I never mute anyone even though I might not like what they say. It might make me ignorant as to what’s going on. I’m not playing this game with you, Fever Pitch Guy. Not the one where you stop reading others comments but then want me to explain them to you. You were a cool guy before. Don’t ask me to be an interpreter just because you muted someone. All I can say is MetsWAR or whatever is only 1 account. He has never made other accounts mocking you. Other people might have but it wasn’t him. 2nd of all, every day you mute him you allow him to set up a trap for you and you fall in it every time. I like you. I’m just letting you know because I I liked you. If I didn’t care I would never tell you. You look bad now, though.

        • Fever Pitch Guy

TheDP – I totally agree. People who come to a BASEBALL messageboard to seek attention instead of talk about baseball are boring as heck. I don’t have the time or desire to read what they post, what they write has nothing of value.

        • Fever Pitch Guy

Fake Nebraska – Last time I’ll be responding to this latest account of yours.

I never asked you to keep up with who I mute. Your decision to not mute anyone is your choice. Unlike you, I don’t try to force my viewpoints onto others or try to force people to do what I want them to do. I have absolutely had it with Cancel Culture.

I don’t play games, never have. The original Steve Nebraska posted comments under that name, and those comments now show as posted by “Deleted User”. So that account was either banned or that person is playing games by deleting their account. You’re the one playing games, whether you’re the original Steve Nebraska or not. And the original Steve had already pointed out he had an imposter using his name in chats.

I never asked you to explain anyone else’s comments. If I mute someone, that means I don’t want to know what that person wrote.

I asked you to explain YOUR comments, not someone else’s..You falsely accused me of “admitting something” even though all I posted here was thoughts & prayers. YOU are the one playing games, not me. YOU are the one that is either colluding with Missed WAR, or more likely you are one and the same.

You would have absolutely no way of knowing whether Missed War has other accounts, if you weren’t him.. The fact that you insist he doesn’t have other accounts leads me to believe that you are one of his alt accounts.

“Allow him to set up a trap?” Again you are talking utter nonsense. I come here to TALK BASEBALL. And you come here to “set traps”? Seriously dude? You’re so obsessed with me that you somehow think you are “trapping” me in a pathetic attempt to force me to unmute you? And what exactly are you “trapping me” on? You’re acting like a pathetic mentally ill anti-social delusional child who is triggered because you can’t force me to do what you want me to do.

Let me make myself perfectly clear: You will NOT stop me from offering prayers to those who are injured or ill. I already said that beginning Friday I’d be considerably cutting back on my posting because of time constraints and the fact that my team is no longer player. But I WILL continue to keep posting. So don’t get delusional by thinking that your constant harassing of me has worked. It hasn’t, and it never well.

I thought for sure I saw guys wearing Mets uniforms in September. I distinctly remember seeing Pete Alonso wearing a Mets uniform all season, and he’s pretty good.

Of course maybe your memory isn’t so good, and that would explain the comment. I know we haven’t seen any Mets uniforms in October.

They’re not all hurt. They just were eliminated from the playoffs.

Eh? His 63 IP at AA isn’t anything to write home about and he has control issues throughout his career to go with his strikeouts. Talk about a wild-card, I wouldn’t trust him under that much pressure without having seen many pro hitters (1 IP at AAA) — if we’re going to hand the ball to someone, please don’t let it be an intern with BDE and no resume.

Bauer and May were out basically all season, played less than Acuna and Ozuna if you want to just name drop players that didn’t have an impact on the series.

And Bauer? Really? The world would be better sans him… maybe Ozuna too?

“The world would be better sans him” So Bauer and Ozuna deserve to die now??? I’d be ok if teams decided they didn’t want the headache of having them associated with their organizations, but saying they should die is ridiculous.

WTAF does karma have to do with Kershaw Bauer and May and the Braves? What, because we beat you and they were either injured or out by suspension? How in hell is that karma that Morton gets injured? Eat more fruitloops for breakfast, by the sound of it you are high on many packets already.

Hate to see this for Charlie.

I expect them to bring in Touki for the pen. He’ll probably do the long work, if needed. That’ll free up Wright and/or Smyly to start.

@other Fred. Tough seeing Charlie go down. Guy is a beast. Good thing is if it goes 7 games the Astros still have to win 4 out of the next 6. Every single Braves hitter got at least a hit in game 1. I still like the Braves odds. I agree with your replacement pitcher hopes and thanks for mentioning Brooks Wilson. I hadn’t even heard of the guy and he is already in AAA. Braves future is bright!

This Brave fan isn’t ecstatic. I’m happy the Braves won, of course, but Charlie breaking his leg is bad. You have to feel for a guy so committed to winning that he came back out to pitch, like he was a Jack Youngblood or something.

If I was making the decisions, they’d not just get to the World Series, but they would win the World Series

And that’s the difference between the 1% and the 99%. The 1% know what wins

Like most, you’re another guy who doesn’t see what it takes to finish. And most GMs/Executives are also like you

So yeah, you’ll be in the majority of fans/GMs who don’t see how to win

Most of the time the problem is the top people who know what to do, have to battle all the hordes and hordes of average people like you and the others

Nearly every take I have is condemned by the mob. But that is precisely because it is the winning take. Most people are the “a99%” who fail

If you start Smyly, he’s going to get rocked by that Astros lineup. And that start will be in Houston. He’s got match up problems with that lineup

But if you bring in Wright and Toussaint for that start, you’ve got a much better chance

Why would Smyly’s start be in Houston? If he’s taking Charlie’s turn in the rotation, that would be Game 4 or Game 5, both of which are in Atlanta.

Next man up period. This team has faced adversity all year long. Morton going down is obviously huge but those arm’s down in the pen need to step in and produce. It’s the World Series everyone is tired or has some sort of ailment. Bottom line, it’s all hands on deck. Team needs to ALL pull that rope in the same direction. They can do it, been doing it all year long.

Time to get creative. Bring in Max Scherzer disguised as Morton and say the docs misread the X-Rays. If Scherzer wears a mask the whole time plus one brown contact in his blue eye no one will suspect a thing. Hey, if the Astros can be morally flexible, so can the Bravos. :p

I’ll say it again, the Baseball G-ds for some reason love the Astros. That narrative needs to change. It begins with Anderson!

I also love the fact that there are Braves writers who are finally calling for lineup changes, particularly with moving Albies down. Guess for some people it takes a while to realize it needs to be done.

I saw this Braves team play the Phillies over the summer. Hard to believe it made the World Series, especially without Acuna. You have to give them credit for gutting it out. I still like them in 6 over the Astros. On paper they should probably lose in 5.

So much for the theory that this was a hairline fracture and that he could potentially pitch through it (foolish idea whoever posted that). I am surprised this required surgery to correct, however. I’m guessing they installed a plate & some screws? It seems a little excessive to me but I guess as you age, the bones don’t tend to grow back stronger than they were before like when you were a kid. If a plate was installed, they’ll have to remove it once he is done with his baseball career.
