Mets To Overhaul Coaching Staff

By Mark Polishuk | October 7, 2021 at 12:26pm CDT

The Mets are planning to part ways with the majority of their coaches, SNY’s Andy Martino reports.  The club has told six members of the staff (bench coach Dave Jauss, first base coach Tony Tarasco, third base coach Gary DiSarcina, bullpen coach Ricky Bones, Major League field coordinator/catching coach Brian Schneider, and assistant pitching coach Jeremy Accardo) that they are free to look for jobs elsewhere.

Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner will also remain but perhaps not in his current position, as Hefner “and the Mets are discussing his future role.”  Hitting coach Hugh Quattlebaum and assistant hitting coach Kevin Howard will be staying in the organization but will be reassigned to the minor leagues, as Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports that Howard will return to his former job as the director of player development.

Considering the Mets have already moved on from Luis Rojas as manager, it isn’t surprising that the club would also look for a clean slate with its coaching corps, thus giving the new manager some opportunity to hand-pick his own staff.  As Martino notes, the Mets coaches were something of “a patchwork group that represented remnants of previous regimes,” which perhaps isn’t surprising given how many managerial and front office changes the Mets have made just in the last few years.

The Mets need to overhaul their owning staff. That Cohen guy has no clue how to own or run a baseball team. He doesn’t even have a clue who to hire to run the team for him. He also can’t seem to help himself from getting his employees drunk at his house and then sending them driving home.

It’s not his job to run the team. That’s the president’s job, who is Sandy Alderson. He certainly knows how to run an organization more than anyone.

    • Samuel

I understand what Cohen/Alderson are trying to do – it’s what they have to do. Forget players for now – the entire organization has to be restructured so the team can grow over the next 3-7 years. The fans see the cornerstones – deGrom, Lindor, and Alonso – so they want to be a legitimate championship contender NOW. Sadly, that’s not realistic. The roster is – and has been for years – a hodgepodge of players with more weaknesses than strengths that are being used in roles they’re ill-suited for because of the roster construction.

They’ve got to get that payroll down to be flexible enough to bring in a few missing pieces when ready. They have to get young/cheap players with years of upside up to the majors and develop their skills – to do that there has to be an organizational philosophy and a coaching staff to carry it out. They can’t expect a championship contender relying on a batch of guys like Dom Smith, Davis, McNeil, Villar, Guillorme, McCann, Nido, Mazeika, May, Hand, Familia, and forever waiting on Syndergaard. They’re all nice guys and can help teams in roles, but they make up too much of a percentage of the team the Mets put on the field each game.

Cohen is a brilliant businessperson. He’s not George Steinbrenner throwing money at free agents. He’ll build an organization.

I hope you’re right but from what I can tell there’s a lot of fans gonna be very disappointed if Cohen doesn’t run out a 280 million plus payroll next year.

The luxury tax payroll in 2021 was already over $200MM, so him blowing it out into Dodger territory is not an impossibility. Problem is throwing good money after bad.

        • The Mets "Missed WAR"

Yeah. I think you are all right basically. I think Cohen will eventually figure it out. The only question is how many team payroll crushing long term regrettable massive contracts is he going to hand out before that happens? Once he figures it out the fans are still going to have to deal with a decade of consequences from his past mistakes before it gets better. Does anyone remember when the Russian billionaire bought the NBA Nets? This kind of reminds me of that. People were so excited about his money but he was very naiive at the beginning. The Nets were terrible when he took over but he was the richest owner in the NBA so the fans got really hyped. He literally said, “I guarantee the Nets will win the Finals within 5 years of me taking over.” He then immediately spent a ton o money and traded his next 6 years worth of draft picks to take in terrible contracts for aging players like Joe Johnson and Kevin Garnett. He thought he could buy a championship right away until he realized he couldn’t. He eventually learned though and now over a decade later the Nets are finally good. That guy is about 25 years younger than Cohen is though so I don’t know if Cohen has that kind of time. Contracts in the NBA are nowhere near as long as MLB contracts. If he was going to make mistakes they needed to be on short term contracts. 4-11 year contracts for guys like Lindor and McCann can really ruin a team for a long time. I also don’t think Cohen is going to be willing to go much over the luxury tax unless he’s confident it’s to turn a playoff team into a champion. McCann of all people for $40 million? The Mets would have been so much better off just passing on McCann, Lindo and Cookie. Spend that mula chasing down Realmuto even if you have to beat the Phillies price. He would have still saved a ton of money and the catching problem would be 100% solved for a long time. It would have left him plenty of money to fix the other needs.

      • RobM

He just threw at least $100M too much at Lindor with a 10/341 deal, which doesn’t even start until 2022. Lindor wouldn’t get anywhere near that on the open market. So he overpaid by trading both talent, and then significantly overpaying financially by an amount that would fund the Tampa Bay Rays for several seasons.

We know he’s a great hedge fund manager. The history of MLB is filled with owners who were great at business and building a fortune that allowed them to buy a toy, a MLB team, but crappy when it comes to running that toy.

Cohen has hown he can massively overpay for a SS. He’s yet to show he can run a baseball team. His first year owning the Mets was a failure on multiple fronts. No need for me to list them here again.

Quite true. It’s understandable that we all expect Cohen to put in place an infrastructure will allow the Mets to be run more effectively, and instill believe he will, but there is zero evidence so far that he can do that. Remember, he was a minority owner for years, so he was familiar with the Mets issues before he took over, but that didn’t seem to help.

Running a sports-entertainment business that is structured around a CBA is quite different than the hedge fund world.

I can see how Dave might have wanted to incentivize himself to produce RBIs. And imagine the stories about him if he broke Wilson’s record and the codicil came to light. Dave would look like a prescient baseball genius!

Yeah, no. MLBTR is my home page on all devices. I read every article and just because I don’t post on them all means nothing. I was here through the Mets collapses of 07 08 and this year, posting in fact. I’m always around when the Mets are losing cause they’re always losing! I had season tickets in some of the darkest years, 03, 04, early 90s. Soon as the Marlins dropped and the Mets were winning this year you vanished. Sounds like you’re projecting there. Point being, you’re basically MetsFan22 but the obnoxious/not fun to laugh at version. You seem to be the sporadic one harassing random people and spewing nonsense and vitriol about one team you weirdly obsess over, and one 12 year old kid who just found his favorite team. But this isn’t a wiener measuring contest or about who’s been where longer. You’re not funny. And your creepy obsession goes beyond weird. Again, I have never disappeared. The only reason you didn’t see me was because you, like many of your Mets brethren (such as @whynot) bailed from this board and your team when they went through the predictable downward spiral. I was here all along. Every poster that was here during the disappearance of the Mets fans of your fairweather ilk saw me bashing the Marlins bullpen while we, led by Anthony Bass (Mets MVP), blew late-inning lead after lead after lead. Again, you didn’t see those because you weren’t here. Don’t pull the false narrative now that you’re being called out for it like I did @CanoSucks and continue to do for the still absent @whynot.

As for @MetsFan22, he’s not a d-bag to your ilk. To others, while he’s a laughable dimwit, he’s still considered a d-bag by many other posters, especially us that are fans of the division rivals. And despite that, a lot of us have given him his due respect for not bailing on the Mets like you, @CanoSucks, @whynot, and many other Mets fans of your fairweathwer ilk this year.

Yeah, because one season means everything. And it means a great deal when one of the guys wasn’t playing the game to appease analytics because while the other played within the era filled with them.

        • dannibalcorpse

just because WAR wasn’t used as a stat in the 70s doesn’t mean it’s not a useful way to judge players, in fact it actually makes it easier to compare players from different eras when different styles of play were prevalent.

But if you want baseball card stats, Kingman is still 20 points behind Pete’s batting average with worse walk and strikeout rates.

        • MarlinsFanBase

          @dannibalcorpse

The thing you seem to not be getting is that guys play to the stats of their era. That’s the point I’m making about the different eras. It’s easy to bash guys in a past era who were not playing to the analytics stats that are used today. However, you can’t hold a guy to the stats of the latest era when he was playing to a past era. The same will be the case when future stats dimwits try to bash Pete Alonso for a future stat that isn’t used now. It wouldn’t be fair to hold Alonso accountable for being weak in future stats than it is to hold Kingman accountable for current ones when they weren’t used back in his time.

However, when you consider seeing the guys play, Alonso is very similar to being the modern day Dave Kingman or Ron Kittle type. Those guys can mash, but they can chase out of the strikezone too when the game was on the line. The one thing Alonso has going for him is that he’s still young enough to make the adjustments needed to not repeat those guys’ histories. Stay tuned!

Pretty sure money can convince a lot of people to join the Mets. Not everyone as evidenced by Theo rebuffing them, but James Dolan managed to hire all manner of credible people over the years despite being 10000x more dysfunctional than Cohen.

What ever do you mean? He was right about that 103-win prediction and the Mets being as good as the Padres this year.

Well, the Padres won 2 more games than the Mets this year.

And I think we all misunderstood @MetsFan22’s 103 win prediction. I think he meant combined total for 2020 and 2021. 26 wins in 2020 and 77 wins in 2021. That 103, so I have to say that he nailed it.

Now if we’re talking about his other predictions and guarantees, well, those speak for themselves. And how could have anyone guessed that when @MetsFan22 took the stance that deGrom didn’t have to do anything else in his career to make the Hall, that deGrom would’ve gotten injured in the very next start? It isn’t like it was the kiss of death when @MetsFan22 took that stance…even though myself and a couple of others joked that it was right when he made his statements.

I could see this team being a juggernaut next year. The league needed us to have the worst injuries and to have several players to have their worst season….to not not make the playoffs. If that happens to a team like the Phillies cards or Braves.. they might be 20 under. Especially the Phillies.

Oh and let’s not talk about all the scheduling mess and double headers they had to deal with… they probably ran out of gas. And the players who returned to injury where not 100 back. Some examples are carrasco and lugo. Also Walker and megill ran into a innings wall. Basically everything went wrong and they still won 77 games… not many teams could do that.

The double-headers were not a disadvantage because the games were shortened to seven innings and you get to call up an extra player for doubleheaders.

Agree. They definitely over-performed given all the injuries and headers. And lets not forget all the bad weather in NY. They played in rain, like, 6 times? Definitely a bruised. battered bunch of killers. Truly exceeded expectations

You’re a mindless troll. The Braves didn’t have Soroka, Acuna or Ozuna and d’Arnaud, Ynoa and Anderson all missed significant time. Pache also proved that he still isn’t ready offensively. Yet the Braves managed to win 88 games while playing in the same division the 77-win Mets played in. The Braves fixed their entire outfield at the trade deadline with a much smaller payroll than the Mets have.

What continues to hurt your already flawed argument is that the Mets have missed the postseason five years in a row and have only three postseason appearances in the last 20 years (one being a Wild Card Game loss). You can’t blame it on injuries every single year. Every team has injuries and yet most of them find a way to at least make the playoffs occasionally. The Mets do not.

@MetsFan22, just like the Mets were gonna be better than the Dodgers this year, right? I even remember your comments in late July “I’m not worried about the Dodgers”, which was right before they lost 6 of 7 to them in less than 2 weeks.

You’re deluded if you believe this team will be a “juggernaut” next year with the current core. All things being equal, they’re an 80-82 win team as constructed and assuming better health. Will there be changes between now April 2022? Sure. Will they be the right changes? Doubtful, but you never know.

This is definitely the right move. Many teams have proven that they can win with less talent. Player development and good coaching is way better than a high priced player at every position.

I liked Bones and Tarasco but I can understand them letting them both go.

Incidentally, I went to a Mets/Pirates game a few months ago (in Pittsburgh) and sat a few rows off the field by first base and Tarasco was awesome. Chatting and joking with the fans all game and took a few pictures and signed a few autographs after the game. The Pirates first base coach Tarrik Brock was hilarious, too, and was rocking some awesome shoes. Meaningless diversion here, but shout out to both of them for being really cool.

Tarasco was the Orioles outfielder when Derek Jeter hit the “home run”.

I saw Jeter watch the video and say “jump” under his breathe. If Tarasco had jumped and been interfered with, history would be quite different. Jeter knows he was lucky.

This is the kind of wholesale change I want to see the Yankees make. I don’t actually think Boone is as terrible as most think, but change is needed if for no other reason than optics at the manager position. The players notice this kind of thing.

But the biggest change Yankees need to make is an overhaul of their analytics department, who clearly make every decision Aaron Boone makes.

Boone has been in lameduck status all season long. Cashman has never fired a manager mid-season. I feel a change is needed to address all the baserunning and defensive miscues among other issues with the team. I think all signs point to a managerial change as Cashman explores his options.

I’m ok with Hefner staying. I thought he really had the staff firing on all cylinders for most of the season and nearly every pitcher improved.

I was hoping ALL these coaches were replaced. The new manager should have an opportunity to put his own staff together. I did think Jauss would be retained to provide the new manager insight into the players.

None of these matter though if the new manager has no real managing experience.
