Braves Hire Hugh Quattlebaum, Carlos Méndez As Assistant Hitting Coaches

By Leo Morgenstern | November 22, 2024 at 2:56pm CDT

The Braves announced a couple of additions to their major league coaching staff today. Hugh Quattlebaum and Carlos Méndez will join Brian Snitker’s staff as assistant hitting coaches, working alongside new hitting coach Tim Hyers. Quattlebaum was hired away from the Diamondbacks, while Méndez was promoted from within the Braves organization.

Quattlebaum has been coaching in affiliated ball since 2018 when the Mariners hired him as a minor league hitting coordinator. He left to become the Mets’ director of hitting development in 2021, and briefly served as the team’s interim hitting coach, replacing Chili Davis partway through the year. Quattlebaum returned to his role as director of hitting development in 2022 before he was let go at the end of the season. He then joined the Diamondbacks as the team’s assistant director of hitting for the 2023 and ’24 campaigns.

Méndez was primarily a catcher and first baseman during his long professional playing career. While he played his lone big league season with the Orioles in 2003, his last stop in the minor leagues was with the Braves organization. He suited up for the Triple-A Richmond Braves from 2005-07. Since then, he has worked as a minor league coach in the organization. This is his first big league coaching job.

Mets To Overhaul Coaching Staff

By Mark Polishuk | October 7, 2021 at 12:26pm CDT

The Mets are planning to part ways with the majority of their coaches, SNY’s Andy Martino reports.  The club has told six members of the staff (bench coach Dave Jauss, first base coach Tony Tarasco, third base coach Gary DiSarcina, bullpen coach Ricky Bones, Major League field coordinator/catching coach Brian Schneider, and assistant pitching coach Jeremy Accardo) that they are free to look for jobs elsewhere.

Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner will also remain but perhaps not in his current position, as Hefner “and the Mets are discussing his future role.”  Hitting coach Hugh Quattlebaum and assistant hitting coach Kevin Howard will be staying in the organization but will be reassigned to the minor leagues, as Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports that Howard will return to his former job as the director of player development.

Considering the Mets have already moved on from Luis Rojas as manager, it isn’t surprising that the club would also look for a clean slate with its coaching corps, thus giving the new manager some opportunity to hand-pick his own staff.  As Martino notes, the Mets coaches were something of “a patchwork group that represented remnants of previous regimes,” which perhaps isn’t surprising given how many managerial and front office changes the Mets have made just in the last few years.

Mets Fire Hitting Coaches Chili Davis, Tom Slater

By Connor Byrne | May 3, 2021 at 10:47pm CDT

The Mets have fired hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater, Tim Britton of The Athletic was among those to report. Minor league hitting coordinator Hugh Quattlebaum will take over for Davis, and farm director Kevin Howard will succeed Slater.

New York made this decision in the wake of a 6-5 loss to St. Louis that dropped the team to a disappointing 11-12. A mediocre offensive performance has played a role in the Mets’ slow start, as their hitters currently rank 17th in the majors in wRC+ (96). Prized offseason pickup Francisco Lindor, whom the Mets acquired from the Indians and then signed to a 10-year, $341MM extension, has slumped over the Mets’ first 23 games. Likewise, outfielder/first baseman Dominic Smith has fallen flat after an excellent showing in 2020, as has $40MM free-agent signing James McCann.

Of course, it’s debatable how much blame Davis and Slater deserve for the above players’ struggles. It’s also worth noting J.D. Davis (who went on the 10-day injured list Monday), Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso have all gotten off to great starts. Regardless, the Mets are taking their coaching staff in another direction in hopes of breaking a four-year playoff drought.

In Davis, the Mets are saying goodbye to a former big league slugger whom they hired before 2019, when Mickey Callaway – not Luis Rojas – was their manager. Prior to that, Davis worked as the hitting coach for the Cubs, who relieved him of duties after the 2018 campaign. Slater joined the Mets’ staff as their assistant hitting coach a year earlier than Davis.
