Report: “Belief” That Corey Seager Will Sign Monday

By Mark Polishuk | November 28, 2021 at 11:56pm CDT

Free agent shortstop Corey Seager could be nearing his next contract, as The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports that there is a “belief” that Seager will sign on Monday.  Seager was known to be leaning towards finding a new team before the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires on December 1, and interestingly, that same report indicated the same about another prominent Scott Boras client in Marcus Semien.

Just earlier today, Semien indeed did sign, inking a seven-year, $175MM agreement with the Rangers.  Seager had also engaged in some talks with the Rangers, and both Sherman and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal feel there is a distinct chance Seager may still land in Texas.  Presumably, Seager and Semien would work as the Rangers’ new middle infield combination, though it would remain to be seen exactly where either of the duo would line up.

Seager has spent virtually all of his career at shortstop but his defensive numbers aren’t great, and there is a perception that Seager might be within a few years of moving to third base or perhaps even second base.  Semien, meanwhile, is the better defensive shortstop of the two, though Semien spent 2021 playing as a second baseman with the Blue Jays while Bo Bichette manned the shortstop position.  Texas also has some incumbents to consider, as top third base prospect Josh Jung is ready for his MLB debut, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa is an excellent defender at either shortstop or third base.

The fact that the Rangers can now even weigh all of these possibilities is indicative of the new doors opened by the team’s willingness to spend big this winter, as the Rangers are making a sharp turn towards contention after five straight losing seasons.  Texas has already signed Semien, Jon Gray, and Kole Calhoun within the last 12 hours, so adding Seager would be just the latest addition to what has already been a frenzy of activity for president of baseball operations Jon Daniels.

Trevor Story is another one of the major free agent shortstops who had been linked to the Rangers, and Rosenthal seems to frame Story as something of a backup plan, noting that Story is “also possible if Rangers cannot get Seager.”  The fact that Boras represents both Semien and Seager could make coordinating such a double-signing easier, though it isn’t as if Daniels and company have never had dealings with Story’s reps at Excel (Kolby Allard is an Excel client on the Texas roster, for instance).

While Boras has a reputation for waiting until deep into the offseason to find acceptable contracts for his free agent clients, Sherman notes that at the GM Meetings in early November, teams felt Boras would have deals lined up for Seager, Semien, and Max Scherzer before December 1 and what is expected to be a management lockout following the CBA’s expiration.  Beyond Semien’s deal, Scherzer also seems to be nearing an agreement with the Mets, which perhaps increases the chances that Seager will also get his contract done in short order.

Beyond the Rangers, the Tigers, Dodgers, and Yankees are other teams who have been linked to Seager’s market, though New York is reportedly planning to wait until after the lockout and subsequent transactions freeze to pursue a shortstop, as the club would prefer a shorter-term commitment.  If Scherzer does sign with the Mets, it could spur the Dodgers to make a bigger push for Seager so as to not lose both of their biggest in-house free agents.  Semien’s departure from the market could also spur any of the teams also looking for shortstop or general infield help (such as the Phillies, Blue Jays, or Angels) to look closer at Seager.

Well, so much for Scherzer saying he wanted to stay on the West Coast! If the Mets do land him, at least Met fans can say Cohen’s money finally addressed starting pitching.

Still, deGrom, Scherzer, Carrasco and Peterson were all injured at one time or another last year. On the other hand, if deGrom and Scherzer can remain healthy all year, that’s a pretty potent 1-2 punch that no team can match aside from the Dodgers.

deGrom and Scherzer are way, way better than whoever ends up as the Dodgers top 2. They are two of the best 5 or so pitchers in the game. I think the closest top pair would be with the Brewers.

Couldn’t agree more. Count the rings, Max Degrom combined 5 rings, how many do the Dodgers top 1-2 have? Or any other 1-2 in the majors.

Rodon and Lynn were both Cy Young Finalists last year, in a season Giolito had an “off year”. Chi Sox have a pretty solid staff as well ( I understand Rodon is a FA, but at the rate that these players are getting snatched up, I could see them signing Rodon again.)

If there was a way to make a wager on this, I’d bet on Buehler & Urias over Degrom & Scherzer for combined WAR. The latter are more talented, but the former are about ten years younger.

So, they plan to POSSIBLY have a viable rotation by 2024 at the earliest? Based off the notion that 3 top prospects might work out? Because top pitching prospects ALWAYS live up to their hype.

No man the plan this year is probably:
          Jon Gray,
(pitcher we haven’t signed yet, maybe Kershaw?)
          Dane Dunning,
          Taylor Hearn,
          some combo of Howard/Otto/Alexy

Then later in the year we will get a glimpse of Cole Winn, Ricky Vanesco and maybe TK Roby.

its not awful and it would get the job done if the offense improves. Again we have to temper expectations, 2023 is the year we are trying to target I think.

If you’re Seager I have no idea why you sign right now. Let other guys set the market for you. He should be making the most out of all of the shortstops.

There’s some belief that the CBA renegotiation might not benefit the players, so those who are well served by the current CBA prefer to sign now to reduce risk. Given the power the owners have, it seems unlikely the new CBA will be *helpful* to Seager’s earning potential … it’s more likely there will be more strict luxury taxes rather than less.

No, Astros still the favorite, Mariners really close, then Rangers then Angels, and that is with Rangers adding Semian, Seager, Gray and Calhoun, Angels signing Thor and Loup, and Astros signing Neris. If A’s trade Olson, Chapman and a starting pitcher or two, they could actually be last. Too bad.

You guys partner with the Bush family or something? You’re hemorrhaging money!

I do want to draw a significant distinction though. TX has had a relatively poor performing team, but every few years, they do this. In contrast, the damage comes from teams claiming to do this, when in fact they are simply stockpiling money and claiming small-market victim status, ie: A’s, O’s Rays, etc…

Why would the Rangers trade prospects to acquire Gallo when
          1) they’ll be competitive this year, but still aren’t better than the Astros (as much as it pains me to say that)
          2) they can sign Gallo next offseason

          How about this…

NYY trades Gallo to Texas for Kiner-Falefa (plays whole IF well), Brett Martin and a couple of lotto picks

NYY can then have Kiner-Falefa play SS with Gio at 3B, Torres at 2B, DJ at 1B/DH

Sounds like other trades on the horizon for NYY as well:
          Sanchez to Miami for Alfaro+
Stallings to NYY for lotto picks to Pittsburg
Olson to NYY for Dominguez, Pereira and Wells to Oakland

Then just go sign Ray and Duffy

Sounds like a contender to me

Chev, those are some very realistic proposals; however, I must admit I’m not familiar with IKF outside of perusing his advanced stats online. In reality I have no idea what he’s worth in trade or if he would be sufficient SS, so I’ll take your word for it.

Didn’t he also used to catch, if I remember correctly? Very, very unique athleticism to rotate from C to SS. Dominguez went from C to CF, but he’s been in CF since 14 or 15, so much earlier than IKF. If so, can IKF still catch?

          He’s an interesting candidate.

Suzuki? Yeah, I could see him going to TX. I’d love a guy like him on the Yankees. Good bat, decent power, can play all 3 OF positions well. What’s not to like?

IKF is fun to watch becasue he makes hard plays looks really, really easy. He is a good contact hitter with limited power and he steals bases. Basically he is a good option if you have offense around him. But no worries, I have no expectations that he will be traded from Texas.

          Check it out yourself: baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/

IKF is a very strong defensive player that can be streaky with the bat. He’s still fairly young and last year was his second full year as a starter (2018 – 2019 played UIF, including C, 2020 played 3B, 2021 played SS). He has the ability to do alot in the field but doesn’t mash the ball. I do think his bat would play better in NY than in Texas because of the difference in the park itself.

          His projection in 2022 in Texas are: Proj. 27 600 554 68 147 22 3 9 49 15 5 34 97 .265 .317 .365 .682 202 12 9 2 2 1 81%

He is not sexy but he is inexpensive and under control for two years. I mean if y’all are looking at Galvis, I’d be interested in IKF. But maybe I’m biased.

I really think Olson to NYY is gonna happen, then y’all will lock him up long-term.

Chev: Yeah, he’s actually really appealing for the buy-low SS candidates. Yankees have offense (although you couldn’t tell last year), and a utility guy like this who can play a solid SS would be a major plus for our roster. Also, it allows movement to whatever position the Peraza/Volpe duo doesn’t take.

As far as Olson? Man, I’m not sure Cash gives up those prospects, but I would be ecstatic with his bat in Yankee stadium and his glove at 1B.

I know Dominguez is all the buzz, but Olson is a proven star….I guess if they want a reunion with Rizzo ok but I think Boston is interested in Olson as well. Two slugging OF and a slugging C for Olson, I’d do it tomorrow.

Yeah, I would be happy with that if they could extend him. He’s certainly top…3 (?) 1B in the ML.

Other than Judge and Stanton, where?

They have virtually the same team since 2017 and with the exception of last year, where they still finished middle of the road offensively, they finished:

          2020: 4th runs, 5th OPS
          2019: 1st runs, 3rd OPS
          2018: 2nd runs, 2nd OPS
          2017: 2nd runs, 3rd OPS

So….. yeah, pretty stout offense that didn’t perform this past year, just like I wrote. And that wasn’t Judhe and Stanton those years either.

Wrong, they don’t have the same offense.
The problems aren’t the big guys. It’s the regression of DJL, Torres, Urshela, injured Voit, aging Gardner, Sanchez, etc.
Their offense was not good last year, mostly below league average.

I look at it more like:
Baez signs with Detroit (it was reported yesterday they were in negotiations)

        Story signs with Houston

        Correa signs with the Angels

        Yankees dip into Galvis/Iglesias/Simmons territory

Rojas in Miami and Farmer in Cincy have both been uprooted by younger, better players.

Those are the trades I’d target (and hope the Angels are).

Breaking: The Texas Rangers have reached an agreement to sign the Los Angeles Dodgers. No word yet on years but rumored to be just short of what Scherzer received from NY.

Assuming you’re referring to Seager @ SS, it’s funny because defensive metrics, especially between DRS and OOA can reflect such a disparity in one player.

And reading articles over the past few days I read two regarding Seager and Baez. What’s interesting is that one writer has Seager’s defense as very good and Baez below average, while the other writer had the opposite. From what I’ve seen, Baez seems to be the superior defender due to Seager’s limited mobility.

      Love that Seager bat though.

The disparity in defensive metrics is due to them being trash statistics. The best way to measure defensive skills continues to be the use of trained eyeballs.

Yeah, I tend to agree. When stats are that disparate there’s no way they can be useful, unless they’re measuring two completely different functions. In the case I referenced above, the definitions reference measuring similar player responses to receive the data.

I could envision them as useful when they all align, which {indicates} a player is clearly good, or clearly bad, depending on the results. But for most it’s way too inconsistent.

Too many stats and they mask what actually matters in a game. The best example was Reggie Jackson versus Dave Winfield. Jackson would go one for four but get the clutch hit. Winfield 3 for 4 but strike out or hit into a double play in the 8th or 9th inning. I will never forget Winfield 1 for 23 in the 1981 World Series.

In excusing the instability of defensive metrics I often I hear that multiple years need to be averaged together. Position players can have thousands of defensive encounters every year. If you can’t produce a stable statistical relationship with this much data, you have to know that more noise than signal is being measured.

Plot twist … Braves come out of no where and sign Corey. Put him and Swanson on the left side of the infield and Riley at first as they let freeman walk …. Maybe if I say it out loud I jinx it and the Braves will freaking resign freeman already ….

I can go for that. Freeman in Pinstripes works for me. Why? 1: Left handed first baseman. 2: Will not cost $$$$ north of $350m for a decade.

Cushman can be very stealth when it comes to FA. Although we all knew he was all over Sabathia in 09 (and Cole in 19), even after he traded for Nick Swisher(presumably for 1B) he swooped in and picked up Texeira. Adding a big name SS does not guarantee this team success, unless the rest of the team that struggled picks up their end. And who’s to say that big name doesn’t struggle too?
The CBA, and Hal’s stance on it will keep the NYY quiet while the rest of baseball will spend like drunken sailors, or like desperate nerds trying to get a prom date.

I have my issues with Cashman, but on this he is correct. There are too many guys that want nothing to do with New York ( Yankees or Mets), and their agents just use them to get more money from another team ( Gausman for example). This is why it is important to find those guys who actually want the pressure and high expectations of New York. If none of the free agents want that, then not wasting time is a good strategy. ps. If Scherzer goes to another team instead of the Mets, that will simply be another example of using New York teams to get what they want from someone else.

You have to filter out the noise. A guy like Scherzer might have no objection to pitching in NY, but might let it slip that he prefers the west coast, making the NY GMs think they have to up the ante 5-10%. And like you said, other guys that would never play in NY, would tell you what a great organization the NYM or NYY are, implying that they might take the money.
