Rays Trade Joey Wendle To Marlins

By Steve Adams | November 30, 2021 at 6:30pm CDT

A busy offseason for the Marlins continued Tuesday, as Miami has announced the acquisition of infielder Joey Wendle from the Rays in exchange for outfield prospect Kameron Misner.

Joey Wendle | Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Wendle, 31, gives the Marlins an option at any of second base, shortstop or third base both in 2022 and in 2023, as he’s controlled another two seasons via arbitration. The lefty-swinging Wendle provides quality defense at all three of those positions and will bring a largely contact-driven offensive approach to the plate for Miami. He’s spent the past four seasons with the Rays, hitting at a combined .274/.330/.414 clip — six percent better than the league average, by measure of wRC+ — with 25 home runs, 86 doubles, 14 triples and 40 stolen bases (in 55 tries) through just shy of 1500 plate appearances.

The Marlins, according to SportsGrid’s Craig Mish (Twitter link), plan to utilize Wendle as a super-utility player who’ll bounce between second, short, third and perhaps the outfield or first base. Jazz Chisholm and Miguel Rojas have second base and shortstop largely locked down (respectively), while Brian Anderson has been the team’s primary third baseman in recent years. Anderson, however, has been beset by shoulder troubles and spent considerable time on the injured list. He’s also capable of playing in the outfield corners, so it’s at least feasible he could move to the grass in order to accommodate Wendle at the hot corner at times. The advent of a designated hitter in the National League could also lead to some reps for Anderson (or Wendle) there.

The good news for Miami is that they don’t have to set anything in stone just yet. Adding Wendle unquestionably improves the roster but does so while creating enough agility for general manager Kim Ng and her staff to cast a wide net in their further offseason pursuits. The Marlins are still seeking a center field option but could also pivot to add a corner bat if there’s a chance for an opportunistic strike in left field or at third base.

Wendle’s addition is the latest in an increasingly active offseason for the Marlins, who in the past week have signed Avisail Garcia to a four-year contract, acquired catcher Jacob Stallings from the Pirates, and signed rotation leader Sandy Alcantara to a five-year contract extension with a team option for a sixth season.

On the other side of the deal, Tampa Bay has reportedly been exploring the trade market for Wendle in advance of tonight’s deadline to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players. Wendle is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $4MM in 2022, and the Rays needed to open a spot on the roster to accommodate their recent one-year, $8MM agreement with veteran right-hander Corey Kluber. The Rays are also deep in terms of infield options; Brandon Lowe, Wander Franco, Yandy Diaz and prospects Taylor Walls and Vidal Brujan give them ample cover at second, third and short.

The addition of Misner, who’ll turn 24 in January, is nothing to scoff at from the Rays’ vantage point, either. The No. 35 overall draft pick back in 2019, Misner split the 2021 campaign betweenthe  Class-A Advanced and Double-A levels, hitting a combined .253/.355/.433 with a dozen homers, 29 doubles, three triples and 26 steals (in 30 tries).

Scouting reports on Misner tout the lefty hitter’s plus raw power, plus speed and solid defensive tools — which make for a tantalizing package were it not for a substandard hit tool. Misner fanned at a 29.4% clip in 462 of his minor league plate appearances this season, and while he offsets those punchouts (to an extent) with a stout 12.3% walk rate, more advanced pitchers will carry greater potential to expose holes in his swing.

The blend of power, speed and defense makes Misner a relatively high-upside name to add to an already deep stockpile of prospects. Misner ranked 10th among Marlins farmhands at FanGraphs, 15th on Baseball America’s midseason list and 21st on MLB.com’s midseason rankings. The fact that Misner briefly reached Double-A this past season at least opens the door for a potential MLB debut at some point in 2022, though it seems likelier that he’d make an impact in 2023 — assuming he continues to produce in the upper minors.

Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald first reported (via Twitter) that Wendle was headed to Miami. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that Misner was going back to Tampa Bay in return.

I doubt a 23 year old who hit under .250 in A ball is becoming a 20 year old who hit over .285 in the majors.

He’s not trash, but he’s also not nearly as good as some of the announcers I remember from the playoffs last fall kept trying to make him. He’s a league average player who is versatile defensively and about average offensively, but starting to decline (this is his age 32 year).

Wendle actually had a higher WAR than Corey Seager this past season…..People like this are why the Yankees keep losing the division to the Rays despite a 200 million dollar payroll….

It’s crazy at 6’ 4” and 220lbs that he’s so fast on the bases. If he can cut down on his K’s he could become a legit player. If anyone can turn him into an above average player, it would be the Rays or the Dodgers. Good gamble by both teams.

it fills a need for very low cost. I’m also a bit perplexed as to why the Phils didn’t jump on this opportunity. I guess they want 25mil/year players at every position?

It’s not that Wendle is a star. It’s that he fills holes without costing much. No brainer move. Phillies have done nothing significant so far, but there’s plenty of time left. Still frustrating to see other teams get better. Phillies have an MVP and a CY Young runner up. They cannot waste their prime. They should be willing to go over the tax a bit. Still plenty of time, but missed opportunities like this are annoying.

Good move for them. I’m not sure this puts them ahead of the Phillies just yet though. This is more of a depth move instead of a starting player I think. This does guarantee the Marlins won’t be going after Taylor anymore I would think because there’s not much of a need for two super utility type guys. I Would like to see them acquire a third baseman though. I am not sold on Brian Anderson at all….

It enhances their depth. Improving the team at the margins is what smart front offices do. The San Francisco Giants have become masters at doing that in the Zaidi era and the results speak for themselves. With an expanded playoff field on the horizon, they have an excellent chance to compete for a post-season berth. And with their wealth of pitching, they can do some damage once they get there.

Btw, you’re criticizing the Marlins for adding two veterans. Meanwhile, the Mets now have the oldest roster in MLB. The average age of the Mets’ opening-day roster figures to be more than 31 years of age.

Any # of free agents or minor league contracts can improve depth. There’s tons of defense first catchers you can get on minor league contracts

Stallings is a legit Gold Glove winner at the Major League level. Do you understand the difference between a Major League player and a Minor League one? The Marlins are knocking on the door of a playoff spot, yet you’re suggesting they don’t try to compete. Why?

A defensive catcher isn’t something you trade prospect capital for. Basically you just go cheap, try to find a minor league guy. There’s a lot of defense first catchers

And a gold glove does not mean vastly superior defensively.. There’s not much difference between a gold glove catcher and other defense first catchers

Defense first catchers are constantly picked up on waivers and through minor league contracts. It’s a minimal (if any) defensive upgrade you get with Stallings

Stallings cost 2 million. Pirates just paid 5 million for a guy who although great and was once elite, isn’t as good as Stallings defensively and even worse offensively. Wendell is at least as good as Adam Frazier and teams were willing to give as much or more to aquire him with half a year less control.

Wendle put up offensive numbers that were 10% above league average while supplying well better than league average defense at short and third. You aren’t getting that on a minors deal.

Chris Taylor likely going to get $60 million or more to provide offense that is about 10% better than league average and has a worse glove at shortstop.

You are so correct. I just can believe the Marlins are giving Misner for Wendle, They already have Diaz, and Berti, What the heck they are doing. Giving away a future for guys that will not make a different in moving the needle offensively. At least Misner can be intimidated, he is fast, raw power, excellent overall athlete. Can be a centerfield as soon as this coming season. This is another lousy and horrendous trade. The to make matters worse they release Brinson. Now they do not have an able body to play centerfield. They better signed Rosario at least he can hack. Bad, bad and very disappointed for how the Marlins are giving away valuable talent .

Yes, the prospect they gave up has some plus tools, but they also got a very solid player in Wendle that can help cover up alot of holes on a team.

Every team wants a guy like Wendle, especially every contending team. He’s the type of player that allows his team to carry an extra catcher, or an extra power bat off the bench, a baserunning specialist, or an extra arm in the pen. He also makes it to where if you have an injury to one of your starters, you can just slide in Wendle wherever, and then use the hole created with a better depth piece from a different position.

Also, Stallings wasn an excellent pickup as well. He’s alright offensively, but he shines defensively. Also, with all their young ajd talented pitchers, Stallings can do wonders for them assisting them callings games, controlling the run game, and he allows his pitchers to solely focus on just executing their pitches. If you don’t know of the positive impact that can have, especially on a younger pitcher, well then you clearly don’t know anything about baseball…

No, The Marling’s gave away a lot. You are so correct. I just can believe the Marlins are giving Misner for Wendel, They already have Diaz, and Berti, What the heck they are doing.

Ugh. Misner will be 24 with about 40 AA at-bats under his belt when the season starts. Nobody’s turning into a worldbeater here. Best case scenario he turns into Jesus Sanchez with a few more walks, who the Rays traded to the Marlins a couple years ago.

Going back to last summer’s trades for Luzardo and De La Cruz, the Marlins have made a string of nice roster moves without a lot of fanfare. That bodes well for the future; even the immediate future since the playoff field is likely to expand. While I’m a Dodger fan, I’m also a fan of the game and like the idea of more teams having a chance to compete and succeed. Seeing positive wintertime comments from small-market fans is kinda neat.

He’s a very solid player, but he’s backed by a lot of good hitters with the Rays. He may fall off the face of the earth with the Marlins. Not easy going through the Rays lineup, they work a pitcher, they’re all tough outs, Marlins is a different story. The better hitters you play with the more likely you are to have more success yourself. Especially as a hitter where guys lengthen out a lineup.

Misner 24 tremendous athlete with a good eye and raw power. He will become a meaningful player for the next 6, 7 years we will hear about him. Wendel will spend the next 2 and it will be happy trails. What are these Marlins intellectuals are doing. At least Misner have a presence and can intimidate. I just can stand what the heck the Fish is doing giving away talent for players that will make zero impact on their offense this lineup is as bad or worse than last years. The had Duval and Starlin and they did not make it.. Those were excellent hitters professional hitters. This two new additions make me laugh. Jeter have no idea how evaluate talent and make awful trades. Plenty of exhibits to proof my point..

You’re too caught up in a possible future of a guy who may never be an MLB player when you just acquired a talented baseball player who has already shown that he can perform at the MLB level. I don’t see it . Giving away talent like that for what. ? Last season they had, Duval, Starlin some real major league hitters. These two do not intimidate anyone. They don’t bring any 25 , 30 homers nor 90 plus RBI. Duval and Starlin did that and more and what happened. They are a worse offensive team than last years. and gave away two studs’ in Scott and Misner for two guys that are not change makers. Scott 21, improving his overall game, ,Misner 24 a tremendous athlete. Go Rays. Marlins will have for the next 10 years trader remorse, they will regret this greatly.

With a DH opening, would Tampa buy low on a Marcell Ozuna trade? He figures to get a “second chance” somewhere and I doubt it would take much to get Atlanta to move him while eating some contract.

I think the Rays are looking to shed outfielders, not add them. They also value good clubhouse guys. Not sure a wife beater qualifies.
