Mets To Interview Bob Geren

By Mark Polishuk | December 8, 2021 at 12:10pm CDT

Dec. 8: Geren’s interview will take place today, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Dec. 7: Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren will interview for the Mets’ managerial vacancy this week, according to SNY’s Andy Martino (Twitter link).  Geren is the sixth known candidate for the job, joining Buck Showalter, Brad Ausmus, Joe Espada, Don Kelly, and Matt Quatraro as names on the Amazins’ radar.

Like Showalter and Ausmus, Geren has some past big league managerial experience on his resume, as he posted a 334-376 record while working as the Athletics’ skipper from 2007-11.  He has also previously worked in the Mets’ dugout, serving as the club’s bench coach from 2012-15.  Geren has worked as manager Dave Roberts’ bench coach with the Dodgers for each of the past six seasons.

Geren has been linked to several other managerial jobs since his time in Oakland, such as the Dodgers’ job that went to Roberts, the Red Sox vacancy that went to Alex Cora, the Giants’ job that went to Gabe Kapler, and even one of the Mets’ recent managerial searches.  Before New York hired Mickey Callaway prior to the 2018 season, Geren was reportedly one of the early contenders as a possible replacement for Terry Collins, though it didn’t appear as if Geren made it too deep (if at all) into the interview process.

This past connection to the Mets certainly makes Geren a known quantity to both president Sandy Alderson and owner Steve Cohen, whereas the other known candidates don’t have any past ties to Queens.  Ausmus and Espada did previously work with GM Billy Eppler, creating an interesting mix of familiarity and entirely fresh voices within the group of six.

This might just be due diligence. I don’t see the Mets hiring a manager with a career record of 40 something games below .500 unless he is a well known household name. Geren isn’t well known and he didn’t do anything to prove himself when he had his first shot. They would be better off giving someone new a chance over this guy. I wonder how Piazza would do. Catchers sometimes make good managers and I’m sure Piazza is very acclimated with the organization already.

I agree. Managerial experience with a constant losing record is the same as giving Rojas his shot. It’s a waste of a few seasons.

I agree with you, I hope they pass on both Geren & Asmus, both “dumpster fires” as managers. Could have possibilities as bench coaches though.

I don’t know whether Geten is or not managerial material. Hall of fame Manager Joe Torre was 894-1003 before he took the Yankee job. I guess some here would have called him a dumpster fire of a hire. Difficult to evaluate managers. If I recall Boche is a lifetime under 500 manager. But he almost certainly will make it to the hall.

I loved how bad the movie Moneyball made Howe look. I don’t know how much of it was true but he sure looked terrible in that movie. It’s hard to believe how much credit he got for that team and how much the Mets paid him after all that. That team was built around Hudson, Zito and Mulder. I don’t thing Arte Howe had as much to do with its success as some people thought at the time. The movie is definitely just one point of view but it made it look like the A’s won in spite of Howe as opposed to because of him.

        • meckert

@Cosmo2- I don’t think it can all be attributed to MetsFan22, but it seems like there has been more reactionary negativity toward the Mets occurred on the boards due to that “least best” Mets fan.

That user and all the controversies, of course.

If I was a fan of every team in baseball, I’d be more upset about the Front Offices of: Rockies(general incompetence) Reds (same as Rockies), Marins (Loria-related), Angels (Arte issues), Diamondbacks (PHX is 5th largest city in US-revenue?) Astros (worst apology in recent years), Cubs (owners not spending in hope WS drought ending brings them endless goodwill), and then maybe the Mets.

But I may be biased as a Dodger fan.

But let’s face it, the Mets have been a bit comical this off-season with the Mad Billionaire Tweeter (the other one) as owner, the front office staff from the planet Zargaz, and jobs nobody seemed to want. Moreover, they washed their laundry in public, which, to some degree is because of where they are, and that part is understandable; but it was still a bit much.

I’ve long disliked the Mets, really ever since I had to watch Glavine pitch in that uniform. Hatred kinda waned for awhile. But I can tell you they sit a’top my most hated list now again because of Cohen, who, to me, is one of the more dislikeable owners in sports.

MetsFan22 also gets a pinch of the credit (blame) for that.

There are some really good Mets fans on this site, though.

        • 48-team MLB

It’s because of 1986. Zero championships in this century in that huge market. Besides, the other four teams in their division all have a title this century.

        • rct

The following teams have ‘zero championships in this century’ and garner nowhere near the hatred the Mets do on this site:

Rays, Blue Jays, Orioles, Indians/Guardians, Tigers, Twins, Mariners, As, Rangers, Brewers, Reds, Pirates, Padres, Rockies.

Seems like a weird cut-off. And saying the ‘other four teams in their division have a title this century’ is equally odd. I’d take the Mets any day over the Marlins, who are one of the biggest jokes in professional sports. I don’t care that they won one 18 years ago. They’ve had even worse ownership issues than the Mets, they won’t spend, can’t hold onto any homegrown talent, trade everyone away, and every year it’s ‘wow, there’s so much potential on this team, wait until next year!’ and then they lose 90+ games again the next year.

I’m pretty sure the current century is what’s relevant now. I’m sure you think that the A’s, Orioles, Reds and Pirates titles are all recent enough to be relevant though. You could honestly say the cutoff for being relevant is actually 2010 but that just hurts the case for the Mets being relevant even more. It would mean that the Phillies and Marlins don’t have any relevant titles though so that’s fine with me.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Shildt but he got a raw deal in STL and the Mets could do worse.

Still something tells me due to his differences with Mozeliak that it has tarnished his reputation a tad.

Seeing how Cora & Hinch are managing again, why dont the Mets bring back Beltran?

Because this teams needs a safe, controversy free hire. They have enough headlines that don’t actually involve baseball.

Possibly well intentioned and/or the reports are exaggerated, but bloody hell, not exactly helpful.

Gomez Adams…..think of the coaching staff…. “Thing” coming out to take the ball from the starting pitcher (and patting him on the butt)…. Cousin It as 1B coach…..

As long as nobody spoke French to the manager…..

Even if you have to hold off until the lockout is over, trade J.D. Davis to the Diamondbacks for Torey Lovullo or to the Twins for Rocco Baldelli, both teams where Davis’ bat would play well with his three years control left.

What happened to the Mets minor league manager that was being considered two years ago? Not Rojas, I think Tony ??? He was quite well respected within the organization at that time. Why bring him in as bench coach in training to Showalter?

From an Angels angle, are there any trusted managers in the system with MLB experience?

I don’t see Cohen green lighting anyone to drive his new machine that doesn’t have real MLB experience.
