Mets Notes: Paddack, Hosmer, Smith, Bassitt

By Mark Polishuk | May 21, 2022 at 10:52pm CDT

Chris Paddack’s recent Tommy John surgery has brought a new focus on the rumored offseason trade between the Mets and Padres that would have seen San Diego move Paddack, Eric Hosmer, Emilio Pagan, and over $30MM (to help cover Hosmer’s salary) to New York in exchange for Dominic Smith.  Trade talks reportedly got pretty deep between the two sides, but ultimately fell apart due to what The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports as concerns from the Mets’ medical staff about Paddack’s health records.

With Paddack now on the shelf until at least partway through the 2023 season, it appears as though New York’s team doctors made the right call.  Interestingly, Heyman reports that the Mets were also planning to flip Hosmer in another trade with an unknown team, rather than use the first baseman in their own lineup.  Given the difficulties that the Padres have had for months in finding a taker for Hosmer, it would’ve been a little surprising to see him moved twice in short order, though it is also easy to imagine Hosmer’s market picking up with the Padres eating so much of his contract.

More from the Amazins….

  • This isn’t the first time Dominic Smith has been a trade candidate, as the former top prospect has swung from cornerstone to expendable multiple times in his career.  Smith has struggled to a .552 OPS over his first 79 plate appearances and isn’t pleased about being back in a part-time role.  “Being here since I was 22, now I’m 26, and still in the same position….If there’s a team out there that wants me to play and wants to let me play, I would love to play every day.  That’s just how I feel about that,” Smith told Newsday’s Anthony Rieber.  However, Smith also stressed that he feels he can get the opportunity with the Mets, saying “I feel like I can impact this team in a number of ways, and that’s being [in the lineup] every day, in my opinion.”  Even after Robinson Cano’s release theoretically should’ve created more at-bats for Smith at the DH spot, Smith still isn’t playing very often, seemingly caught in the catch-22 of not hitting well enough to earn more playing time, yet also not being able to get into a groove due to that lack of playing time.
  • Chris Bassitt and the Mets agreed to a one-year deal (with a mutual option for 2023) today, which avoids the need for the two sides to determine Bassitt’s 2022 salary in an arbitration hearing.  Speaking to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo and other reporters, Bassitt said he was “happy that it’s not going to be a distraction for anybody,” given how the lockout has pushed several unsettled arbitration cases into the actual season.  While Bassitt said he would like to with the Mets beyond 2022, that same desire to just concentrate on this season doesn’t make it seem likely that extension talks will take place until the winter.  “A lot of people are short-term thinking right now this year.  We have such a special group that I don’t really want to be a distraction and hurt that in any way,” Bassitt said.

Might be better for everyone if either Dom or JD Davis is moved. Seems like they might both be suffering from a lack of PAs.

Dominic needs to sit back and realize he got to play the majority of 2021 to poor results. This year with limited playing time is even worse for him. Take some accountability maybe. If I were the Mets I would look to trade him if he holds any value after his comments to the media.

I wouldn’t make much of his comments to the media. Do we expect a former first round pick to be content as a bench bat? He has a passion to play everyday, he said something he shouldn’t have, I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it.

I’d rather keep them. Those extra bats could prove useful. And if Smith doesn’t start hitting he’s not bringing anything back anyway. If he does hit, we should keep him.

Their bats coming off the bench or filling in from time to time and giving the Mets depth is what’s making them a string contender. Moving them because they’re not happy doesn’t benefit the team – eventually they will become free agents and can move on.

Ya mean the Mets medical staff made the right decision? Hard to believe.

As for Smith / Davis, they have very little trade value. Mets have been week at the DH position with the exception of Alonzo, who should be the every day 1b. Smith is the better defender but Alonzo has been good enough to get to be the every day guy. They need an upgrade at DH.

I hope you’re right, but Dom looks lost at the plate. I’m not sure what happened because up until last year, he’d been improving every year. This year’s awful start might mean that last year was no fluke.

I think JD will rebound. I haven’t seen the numbers but he appears to me to be hitting the ball pretty hard, they’re just not falling in.

Dom doesn’t seem to even have an actual approach at the dish and looks pretty lost. I’m not sure he can just make it click again, not here in NY.

If I had to bet on one, I’d go with Davis, whose bat I trust more and who can also play 3B in a pinch (not well, but passably at times).

I agree with you guys that it’s certainly reasonable to be worried about Smith right now. But he’s basically a lefty off the bench so he’s still about as good as whomever might replace him.

I disagree with you. First of all, everything is new this year; even their medical team. Both Smith and Davis have offensive value. Both just happen not to get a lot of playing time. They’ll adjust and come around.

Wow, so we’re calling a guy with a .270 an empty .270, but when we see a guy that can’t hit his way on, but can OBP his way on while being a bad baserunner and offer very few SBs, and average runs scored totals, we don’t call that guy a player giving an empty OBP.

Maybe this type of guy needs to wear another uniform for someone to call his OBP “empty” like they would call Hosmer’s .270 empty.

        • Cosmo2

What? Seriously, Marlins… what? You’re only confused by your own refusal to learn how these stats work together. It takes like a half an afternoon to learn the basics of modern statistical interpretation. How, yes, a .400 OBP is MUCH more valuable than a .270 BA. How stats like OPS+ can give you an overhead view of what’s more valuable in traditional stats. If you refuse to teach yourself the basics, what do you want from us? It’s your misunderstanding.

        • MarlinsFanBase

My thing is how a guy with a .270 BA who does nothing else is considered to have empty stats, but I’m pointing out how a guy that has a high OBP, who doesn’t run the bases well, doesn’t steal bases, and doesn’t score runs above what can be considered average, also can be seen as empty stats because he doesn’t drive in runs and doesn’t hit HRs. Why isn’t this guy’s numbers called empty OBP the same way you all will call someone who does nothing but hit .270 a guy that puts up empty stats? They both are doing nothing with what they do right? Afterall, what’s the point of getting on base when you clog up the bases because you don’t steal bases, you don’t do well when you’re running because you make baserunning mistakes, and you don’t score runs at a level that is above the average to match what guys with less OBP can do? Seems like that OBP that results in nothing is just about as empty as the guy who isn’t doing anything with his .270 average. If you’re getting on base and doing nothing with it, what’s the point? How is that not empty OBP? Is it because one guy wears a Padres jersey and the other wears a Mets jersey?

strikeouts & not being able to steal bases makes you an empty performer.. that’s a true “statistical interpretation.” all this hit pop flies and strikeouts are ok! BS is repulsive. lol. not being able to hit the opposite way, bunt or steal bases makes you a pretty easy player to gameplan for.

Nimmo must have stolen MFB’s lover. It’s the only logical explanation. The only 2 NL outfielders with higher OPS are Harper and Soto, but somehow MFB insists Nimmo is a fourth outfielder. It’s a shame because most of MFB posts regarding other topics are reasonable. Just curious, did you think Marte was a good base runner in Florida? Any Met fan can tell you Nimmo has run the bases amazingly so far this year, way better than Marte.

        • Cosmo2

Because .270 BA and nothing else is not good BUT a .400 OBP and nothing else is ok because .400 is much better than .270!!!! Not hard to grasp. Plus, let’s take, for example, Nimmo, he gets on base and does other things but you LABEL him as nothing but OBP and then misjudge him based on your own mislabeling. Again, this is all your misunderstanding. Please look into stats like OPS+ because EXPERTS have already solved and delineated this so there’s really no need for us to hash it out here. It’s basic baseball 101.

        • MarlinsFanBase

          @Cosmo2

Then explain to me how Nimmo not being able to steal bases, score runs at above what is considerably average range, doesn’t drive in runs either is something to be ignored when he gets on base and does nothing with it? He gets on base, but doesn’t score. He gets on base, but doesn’t drive in runs. Where’s the value? Please explain how getting on base without scoring at a top level or driving in runs at a top level is not empty. In order for a team to score runs and for you getting on base to be relevant, the team needs to score the run because of you. Is there another way to score runs without driving them in yourself or scoring them yourself? Because I’d like to know. This would be something new – the ability to score runs without driving them in or scoring them. I didn’t think that was possible. How does Nimmo manage to help the Mets score runs with his OBP when he’s not scoring or driving in runs at a top level to match his OBP?

Please please please explain that to me. Don’t cop out on addressing this. I seriously want to know how this works. You all are so confident in your advanced stats, then have the confidence to explain it the same why I do when I defend things like batting average with a clear explanation.

        • MarlinsFanBase

          @mookie1

So you think you’re statement has logic to you. So so you think that only Harper and Soto are the only players in MLB that are better players than Nimmo? If not, then take a look at the other stats that make the other players who are better than him, while having lower OBP. If you do think that only Harper and Soto are better or more valuable players than Nimmo, thank you for making my point about you Mets fans.

        • MarlinsFanBase

          @mookie1

With the Marte and Nimmo running comparison, you can’t seriously be comparing last year’s Marte with this year’s Marte. One, Marte was injured coming into this year. Two, Marte is a year older. That would be like me comparing the Marte the Marlins had to the Marte that the Pirates had.

What next? Are you going to say that Alonso is far greater than Albert Pujols and Miggy Cabrera because of how they all look now versus comparing Alonso to what Miggy and Albert were in their primes?

Seriously? I bet you feel Trevor Berbick is better than Mohammad Ali too. Come on man!

As for Nimmo, we’re still in May. As the season goes on, we’ll see how many baserunning mistakes he makes by the end of the year. 6-weeks in a season doesn’t erase the previous 6-year history.

        • Flyby

so MFB you are saying we cant compare players year to year? Wasnt Marte on the Marlins to start the season last year?. From what i have seen stealing bases is the same as what it was last year so last year vs this year i would think would be a solid comparison.

        • mookie1

          @MFB

I absolutely do not think Nimmo is in the same league as Harper or Soto. I merely was pointing out that he is a good player. OPS already weighs extra base hits and singles heavier than walks, it’s not like he only walks. He will score plenty of runs this year, but he has no control over what the guys behind him do. The Mets were terrible hitting with men on, with men in scoring position, and getting guys in from 3rd with less than two out.

I understand that Marte lost some speed, but he has made poor base running decisions. Wasn’t your argument about Nimmo being a bad base runner based on that, not his lack of speed.

Nimmo is not a superstar and is frequently unavailable to play, but almost any team would want him as a starting outfielder. Many things are debatable, but that is an absolute fact and any other conclusion is wrong.

        • Cosmo2

I can’t teach you how stats work if you don’t already get it. You are full of hyperbole about what Nimmo “doesn’t” do but he does do quite a bit of those things. You say he doesn’t score runs, you state it as if it is literal fact. But he does score runs, the stats are there. He didn’t score zero runs as you suggest. You exaggerate “data” and then use it incorrectly. I can’t teach you how to use statistics here and now. I suggest you look these things up for yourself. Remember, basically every view you hold here goes against EXPERTS…. Not to mention that he is on a pace for about 100 runs this year so you are just wrong on everything here

        • Flyby

To add to Cosmo’s notes … this is a bit of an extreme example how did DeGrom win the cy young and be known as one of the best pitchers with barely any wins? Simple he did well what he could control which is limitting runs and striking out the otherside. He cant control the hitting and defense of the rest of the team (although degrom did win a few games with his own bat)

You can say the exact same thing for Nimmo, he doesnt control the people in front or behind him in the lineup so he cant control knocking in people when they are not on base and he cant control being knocked in. He gets on base well and plays good defense at a premier position. (which is pretty valuable on its own) and a little bit of pop.

Here is a question for you … would the marlins be better with nimmo on the team or better with what they are rolling with? I would say better considering he would lead the team in runs and be 4th on the team in ops (2nd if you include just players that have played atleast half the games).

Smith’s trade value has severely plummeted. I do think not trading him at the beginning of the season was a mistake, and his career is being damaged by not getting more playing time. He’s a great defensive 1b who can hit, but on the Mets, due to redundancies, he’s simply a declining bench bat.

It is amazing how organizations lead their fan base to believe something that just isn’t there. At the time of the trade Paddack was 8th or 9th on the Padres’ SP depth chart, coming off a shaky 2021, and had a pocket full of health red flags. Twins FO allowed Preller to sell them a lemon they couldn’t otherwise move, and now that lemon will be sitting in their lot until at least 2024.

That makes no sense. Hosmer’s contract calls for full no trade protection after he is traded the first time. And even if it didn’t, we’ve all seen how hard of a time San Diego has had trading him. If the Mets had tried to flip him there’s a VERY good chance no one would be interested and they’d be stuck with an overpaid scrub that they never wanted to begin with.

Just a rumor. No one is dumb enough to take on Hosmer’s contract

i say move dom if theres alittle value in a pkg for bullpen long reliever cause we have d palka in triple A who can be rf ,dh,1b better then what dom is giving and also move j.d if possible cause veintos is ready and he can play 1b,3b,dh better then j.d

People have been predicting that bad trade for 3 years now. The reliever we get in exchange for Smith will be of little value and easily obtainable some other way. Still makes no real sense to trade Dom for scraps.

Am I the only one that comes in here looking for things that might happen NOW?
Why in the world do they feel the need to have conversations and stories about transactions that never happened or could have happened but didn’t?
Who needs to even know or care about past what ifs?

look at this month with all these big trades happening. May is completely nuts with all these big stars moving all over the place. I cant keep up with all these trades happening. I think we need a tracker that updates by the minute. MLB may need to hire 100 more staff just so they can keep up. I cant believe jo adell has been traded to every team in MLB just today alone. .

Its May nothing big happens this month just the usual dfa and injuries. Cano being cut will be the biggest non-injury news you will probably see happen. So when its slower why not have a good discussion on something or would you prefer there not to be any articles? I guess we could discuss Juan Soto going to the Mets for Travis Jankowski because it MIGHT happen if Cohen gets the Lerners and Rizzo plastered enough to agree to it or pull a babe ruth and give them a ton of money and just straight buy him.

Which is an insteresting thought could Cohen or any owner just say here is 200M bucks im taking this generational talent off your hand for basically nothing but cash or just whatever random player they pick? Im sure there are some kind of rules or something that would need to be approved but it could be “Cash Considerations” which i dont know if there is a limit to it.
