Royals Announce Four Roster Moves

By Anthony Franco and Mark Polishuk | June 17, 2022 at 4:46pm CDT

The Royals reinstated right-hander right-hander Matt Peacock and left-hander Gabe Speier from the injured list.  In corresponding moves, right-hander Albert Abreu was designated for assignment, and righty Arodys Vizcaino was outrighted to Triple-A Omaha.

Kansas City acquired Abreu from the Rangers just two weeks ago, but he loses his roster spot after four appearances. He only allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings with K.C., but he also issued four walks and only fanned three batters. Abreu also had more walks than strikeouts (12:9) during his early-season stint in Texas, and those control woes have pushed him off two rosters.

Abreu can’t be optioned to the minor leagues, so teams have to either keep him on the active roster or designate him for assignment. That status has squeezed the hard-throwing reliever off both the Yankees’ and Rangers’ rosters recently, but he’s drawn the attention of rival clubs both times. Kansas City will now have a week to try to work out another trade or see if he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed.

Vizacino signed a minor league deal over the offseason and made it back to the majors in late May after posting a 1.76 ERA through 15 1/3 frames in Omaha. The former Brave appeared in seven games, tossing 5 2/3 frames of four-run ball. He issued seven free passes and struck out just three hitters, however, and he’ll lose his 40-man roster spot as a result. Having already cleared outright waivers, Vizcaino will have the right to elect minor league free agency and look for opportunities elsewhere if he doesn’t want to rejoin the Storm Chasers.

There must be some mistake – Vinnie Pasquantino isn’t on this list.

Meanwhile Ryan O’Hearn and Carlos Santana occupy roster spots on a 21-41 team that has two top prospects ready to go.

I assume KCR is playing Santana in hope he will play himself into a possible trade attraction.

That ship has sailed. The guy couldn’t bring a McDonald’s happy meal back in a trade

The only benefit to keeping him on the roster is extending control on the prospects he’s blocking

Try being a Cub fan. They give Jason Heyward starts over prospects that they could evaluate at the major league level to at least see what you’re working with. Heck even over Clint Frazier. Absolutely no starting pitching, bullpen sucks and they’re starting infield would be backups on any other team. An ownership group, in a major market that loves to bargain shop. Ah, but rest assured…on average they have one of the highest ticket prices in the game!

It’s pretty hard to care about a middle reliever but Vizcaino is really one of the biggest “what if’s” in recent history. Dude could have been a dominant back end of the bullpen arm for a contender if injuries didn’t destroy his arm.

1 trade and 2 DFA’s for Abreau and it’s not even July. At least NY didn’t lose anyone of note in the ’20 rule 5 while they kept him on the rost…wait a min…f@ck!

The fact of the matter is there is very little talent on the MLB roster and not many true prospects in the minor league system. That’s on Moore, who has had 16 years to get it right, but only three winning seasons during that time. The Royals have the third worst winning percentage during the Moore years, and Miami and Baltimore will pass them during the next year. The real problem is it would take a competent new management team years to fix the situation Moore has created. Very sad situation for great KC fans.

I have never understood the thought process if we pay a player millions and he is having a bad year, just keep playing the player. When teams do this they kill their future. Both Vinnie and Nick are better first baseman than Santana but who cares. Let Santana bat less than .200 in the five hole for a year and not produce hardly any RBIs or home runs. That will get you in last place fast.
Sherman knew we needed bullpen help before the season started and did nothing about it. If you have not notice people want out of KC. Ask Jakob Junis about it. Matheny gutted the bullpen last year and did not have a plan how to re-construct it Take away the covid season in 2020 and you have a pitching coach who MLB ERA is 25th or higher each season for the past five years. All of them Sherman, Moore, and Matheny and Eldred need to be fired.

The Tigers played JaCoby Jones instead of their many OF prospects. Teams need to be all in when they rebuild. These “one-foot-in” efforts never work.

At the time the Tigers played JaCoby Jones, he was the prospect. They had acquired him in trade, and needed to see what they had, just like they are playing Torkelson now, and KC is playing Witt now. In 4 years we will know if they become the next Jones, or the next Gordon, who started out slow with KC and became a stalwart.

When you look at the progress of BW Jr. and MJ Melendez at the big league level, it’s mind boggling why Prato and Vinnie P are still in AAA.

One would think that Vinnie P’s HRs would be an offer the Royals can’t refuse.
