Injury Notes: Alvarez, Reynolds, Garcia, Witt

By Mark Polishuk | July 24, 2022 at 5:23pm CDT

Yordan Alvarez wasn’t in today’s Astros lineup, as the slugger is still dealing with soreness in his right hand.  The same injury already sent Alvarez to the 10-day injured list for a minimum stay prior to the All-Star break, and medical tests during that IL stint didn’t reveal any structural damage.  Still, manager Dusty Baker told reporters (including Chandler Rome of The Houston Chronicle) that the Astros will be giving Alvarez some occasional time off due to this seemingly lingering injury.  “We knew we were going to have to give him a blow every now and then, but he was sore and we don’t want it to get more sore,” Baker said.

With two homers in 13 plate appearances in his four games since returning from the IL, Alvarez didn’t seem too hampered by this recurring hand problem, though some additional rest could certainly prevent a more severe injury.  The last thing Alvarez and the Astros would want is a lengthier IL trip interrupting both Alvarez’s spectacular season and his potential availability for the playoffs.  Alvarez is hitting a whopping .307/.407/.668 over 329 PA in 2022, leading the majors in both slugging percentage and OPS.

More injury updates from around baseball….

  • Bryan Reynolds told Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he is aiming to return from the 10-day injured list during the Pirates’ upcoming two-games series with the Cubs on Monday and Tuesday.  A left oblique strain sent Reynolds to the 10-day injured list on July 11, though it seems as though he has avoided the lengthy absence that can often come from oblique problems.  In fact, the IL stint may have prevented a longer-term issue, as Reynolds said the injury “had been bothering me for a few series before.  It got to the point where I needed to say something.  I didn’t want to make it worse.”  While his return prior to the trade deadline will inevitable spur on more rumors, there isn’t much expectation that the Pirates will actually deal Reynolds, unless another club meets Pittsburgh’s huge demands.
  • It looks as though Rony Garcia is heading back to the injured list, as Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters (including MLB.com’s Jason Beck) that Garcia felt bicep discomfort during today’s start.  Garcia was only just activated from a three-week IL stint (due to shoulder soreness) to pitch today, but the biceps issue forced Garcia from the game after only 2 2/3 innings.  Hinch said Garcia will be shut down for the time being, creating yet another vacancy in Detroit’s injury-riddled rotation.  Five other starters are already on the IL with temporary or season-ending injuries, plus Eduardo Rodriguez is still on the restricted list.  Today’s abbreviated outing pushed Garcia’s ERA to 4.59 over 51 innings for the Tigers this season.
  • Bobby Witt Jr. is day-to-day with right hamstring tightness, as the Royals made what the club described as a “precautionary” removal of the star rookie after the first inning of today’s game.  Tests didn’t reveal any significant damage, Witt told the Kansas City Star’s Lynn Worthy and other reporters, but it would seem likely that the Royals will give Witt a game or two off to heal up.  Heralded as one of baseball’s top prospects, Witt has hit .258/.301/.459 over his first 379 PA in the big leagues.

    Don’t Michael Fulmer Bryan Reynolds.

The smart move would be to wait for the teams that miss out on Soto to need a Plan B and bring back a haul that puts your rebuild over the top.

It’s definitely possible Bryan Reynolds and David Bednar could both be moved before the deadline. Jasson Dominguez and Trey Sweeney both interest the Pirates. They also interest the Reds, who will be moving Luis Castillo before the deadline. The Yankees have said no to Volpe and Peraza so far, so Jasson Dominguez could probably be on the move somewhere with Sweeney.

@junior25- Dominguez or Peraza, (probably Peraza) Waldichuk, Josh Breaux are all getting looked at by the Reds in Castillo talks. Definitely thinking (Castillo) could be traded by his Wednesday start. (Maybe his last start as a Red)

Pirates will deal anyone. They don’t have to so it will have to be a fair trade. Maybe the Nats ask too much for Soto and makes teams up their previous offers on Reynolds. He can actually play a good outfield and cf at that. Extra year of control as well.

@YourDreamGM- I hear you. I know Soto is better then Reynolds. But I love the idea of getting David Bednar back in the trade from the Yankees standpoint, especially after losing Michael King for the rest of the year. Patrick Corbin probably is a deal breaker for the Yankees, but I could definitely see the Dodgers or the Padres trading for him, if it meant getting Soto. That said if the Yanks come away with Luis Castillo, Bryan Reynolds, and David Bednar before the deadline they should count their lucky stars.

@Captain Judge99 I wouldn’t want to give the prospects to get any of those guys. Yankees get linked to every big trade but when was the last time they parted with a huge prospect capital? I say they get none of them but if anyone Castillo because the Red’s have gotten some questionable returns. Yankees aren’t desperate for pitching but Castillo and Bednar are upgrades over what they have as they would be on any team. I love trades though so hope they go big.

@YourDreamGM- I hear what your saying but Dominguez and Sweeney are top prospects though. I have to disagree with you though I feel trading for Castillo is a lot more important for the Yankees right now then trading for Juan Soto or Bryan Reynolds truthfully. I think trading for Castillo would be huge for the Yankees. Keep thinking of a parade in October, hopefully. We’ll see. Thanks for your posts and thoughts.

You are disagreeing with me just to say you disagreeing. I don’t believe a bat is more important than a pitcher. I think both would be nice but not necessary. I wouldn’t trade any prospect I felt was a future all star. I think the Pirates and Nats aren’t in play with that stand. I have less respect for the Reds but don’t think they would go for that either.

The ultimate PTBNL. The Legend of Yordon Alvarez was related on Astros Radio one afternoon… After an Astros scout saw Yordon on a Dodgers’ backfield, Luhnow told LA, ‘We want Alvarez.’ Thinking Luhnow was asking for their highly touted pitching prospect, LA said no. Luhnow replied, ‘No, the other Alvarez.’ And LA agreed. The rest is history.

I feel Dominguez will be ready in 2 years. 1.5 years is definitely possible. I would trade for him before he ends up on the Reds or possibly the Nationals.

Dominguez could work as a headliner if they like him. Pirates are always open for quantity. They won’t need 2 or 3 of a teams best prospects like many think. A top 50 guy and 2 or 3 A ball kids who have the potential to be. If they could have had Julio I believe Reynolds would been in Seattle. That was there ask and the end of trade talks when Seattle wasn’t interested.

We know the Yankees cheated. They’re why the memo was sent out. The Astros just took it to another level and thumbed their nose at MLB and won the world series. Cheating is simply acting dishonestly or unfairly to again an advantage. You can try to cheat and lose, which is what the Yankees did. That trying to cheat is still cheating.

I am glad Mike Fiers went public with the Astros cheating, since he spoke out, several other current and former players have made public statements about rampant sign stealing in the game. It has no place in the game whatsoever.

Absolutely no hard feelings towards Fiers. I feel bad for him because he has been raked over the coals. He has been ostracized by many current and former players (ironically some ex-Yankees and ex-Red Sox players don’t care for him at all). Even Hall of Famers.

The Astros have become a scapegoat by the fans mainly because the media hysteria is feeding the angry mob. They want their pound of flesh. The Astros got into the way of MLB’s “anointed” franchises meeting in the World Series.

MLB’s decision to not strip the Astros of the W.S. title was never about protecting the Astros or supporting Astros fans.

They wanted to protect the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and some other teams.

Astros stopped cheating in 2018 well before Fiers went public because their system was no where near as effective as the cheating efforts by the Yankees or Red Sox.

Astros modeled their cheating off of the Yankees (thanks to Beltran). The brain trust responsible for the Astros cheating are gone from the team. Cora is with the Red Sox, Luhnow is out of baseball (where he belongs), Hinch is with the Tigers, Beltran is back in the Yankees family, Correa with the Twins (you think the Astros letting him walk in free agency was about $$ – Astros low balled him in negotiations), Springer is with Blue Jays, Gonzales with the Yankees (he was very active in the cheating), and other players are out of baseball altogether.

Everyone associated with that scheme is gone.

It is actually getting fun to read and watch.

I believe Astros fans should encourage the insanity to continue. Really sense trying to reason with anyone that defines their fandom with their hatred of the Astros.

The Los Angeles Times reported in 2020 that a comprehensive data revealed the sign stealing scheme deployed by the Astros provided no tangible benefits to the Team.

Astros played better on the road in 2017.

The Red Sox and Yankees got busted for cheating the same season and it was Carlos Beltran who initiated the Astros trash can scheme after coming over from the Yankees. He told the younger Astros “they were behind the times.”

The rampant hypocrisy among fans is hilarious. They just want to a villain to hate so logic or facts will never matter.

Did the Astros deserve punishment for using the scheme? Yep.

Did the Astros deserve to have the World Series title stripped? Nope. Astros received NO benefit from it in the playoffs. The decibel levels by the Astros fans made it impossible to hear the scheme. Thank you Astros fans!!

MLB would have Pandora’s box with a decision to strip the title. That was not rabbit hole MLB was willing to go down.

Astros players or the fans should not apologize to any of the hypocritical mob consisting of Dodgers, Yankees, or Red Sox fans.

Maybe some contrition is in order to the fans of the Rangers, Athletics, Angels and Mariners. The home games against those teams in the regular season where the scheme was used may have had benefits.

It was something that was rampant in the league. Many teams were doing this to some degree. The Houston Astros actually started doing it in response to what was being done to them

Bass86, seriously? I did not start the sign stealing talk and calling me pathetic is well pretty pathetic but not surprising given the rabid hatred of the Astros.

You are telling me to move on yet the Astros need security on the road for themselves and family members, they get heckled, stuff tossed at them. Fans face threats at road games (can’t wear Astros gear on the road if you are a fan of the team). Plus posters here can’t help themselves but hating on the Astros all the time.

You actually want to come on here, call me pathetic and say move on?

My initial impression of you; a reasonable fan that actually did move forward; above the insults; and wanting to talk baseball; was wrong.

Your pathetic meter seems to be flashing nonstop.

I’m not excusing anything nor downplaying it. As I stated previously, cheating in the game regardless of complexity should not be tolerated.

If the roles were reversed and the Astros lost games due to an unfair advantage, I would be upset (not to the extent the fandom is to take it out on other people).

Data analytics, Hall of Famers, and other players are more defensive of the Astros than I am. I think it is quite comical that the Astros failed miserably to cheat (most of the players’ performance worsened when the scheme was used).

Astros’ pitch recognition suffered – more strikeouts, more double plays, etc). Statistics are not pathetic like you seem to suggest. Astros hit better on the road. There were tied for the best road record in baseball.

You are that is truly pathetic. Bye.

In 2018, the Brewers and Mets organizations complained to MLB that the Dodgers used video feeds to steal signs. The Dodgers beat the Brewers in 7 games in the NLCS. Brewers organization is not fond of the Dodgers because they strongly believe the Dodgers cheated.

The Astros are a convenient enemy for the fans because of the relentless media hysteria and Mike Fiers’ public admission.

If MLB would have revoked the Astros WS title, more players across the league will come forward.

Neither MLB or the MLBPA association wants that. You are looking at potential WS title revocations going back several years.

The Astros have 4 of 13 position players leaving as FA including #1 bench player Aledmys Diaz.

I fully expect Hensley to compete for that position in the spring.

But I do expect the Astros to fill at least 1 and maybe 2 of those spots with veterans.

It’s very hard to expect a team to compete with 4 rookies among 13 position players.

Astros are high on IF/OF prospect Enmanuel Valdez. He will be in the mix next season.

He is following the trajectory of several Astros prospects; won’t appear on any top prospect list until their last season before reaching the big leagues. Then after reaching the big leagues, make an immediate impact.

Most notable; Jose Altuve was never ranked higher than #28 on the Astros top 30.

LHP Framber Valdez was projected as a “relief pitcher with multi-inning potential”.

Just two examples (but the list goes on).

Enmanuel Valdez is now ranked #6 in the Astros top 30 (after being unranked) and in discussion to be in the top 100 MLB prospects.

The Yankees need to win NOW or at least SOON.

Dominguez is a special talent that any fan should want to see develop and turn into a superstar

However even the best prospects are unproven and not guaranteed to become that.

      Soto is already there.

Any team that has a chance to get Soto should but especially the Yankees.

He would certainly mean that Judge is gone after the year but they would be scary this year.

And as he is much younger and a lefty bat he is a much better fit than Judge on this team.

These players could definitely help their organization for now, and the near future for sure. The Yankees could possibly take Corbin back in the trade also to help the Nationals, he’s been so bad this year.

Unlike some of the detractors here, I strongly believe the Yankees farm system is outstanding. Loads of talent up and down the system. Very impressive balance at every level.

Yankees are indeed one of the few teams that can meet the Nats demands. GM Cashman is one of the strategic GMs in seeking upgrades. Don’t really see him going out of his comfort zone to acquire Soto.

He will edge out the roster. Yankees will be a monumental force in the playoffs.

Cashman has 3 deals in the works to improve the team. Yankees will be one the most active teams at the deadline. Soto talks with Nats did not advance. Rizzo wanted Volpe. Cashman moved on.

Yankees are in on Castillo. News reports of Yankees hitting pause on Castillo are incorrect.

I wish the Astros were going to be active. They are not gaining traction in trade talks. Not as much as the Yankees are.

It won’t make any difference. NYY can’t hit Astros pitching. But HOU can hit Yankees pitching.

I know everyone talks about pitching, but the Pirates need some help on offense.
Trading the hometown kid might not be popular, but a closer like Bednar is a luxury that the Buccos don’t need at this stage of the game.
Flip Bednar for some combination of power / speed / high OBP.

I am for trading anyone at anytime if you are winning the trade by a large enough amount. Especially a relief pitcher.

Never really got the Soto hype, a 240 hitter with power who walks a lot and iffy in the field. Buyer beware he could be payroll killer in the future.

Well, mainly people here are taking about the Pirates.

At this point it seems highly unlikely they’ll be going after Mr. Soto…..but strange things do sometimes happen.

Walking a lot is what teams want. Add power and he is a star. Defensive in the outfield is a big deal but yeah he isn’t a positive there. I wouldn’t pay him 400 million but someone should unless he keeps hitting.240

How the heck are the Tigers going to put together a starting rotation? Skubal, Hill, Hutchinson… Who else is healthy? Alexander? Who else?

Your post is more insightful than some of the other anti-Astros posts I have read here.

Astros fans are not crying – the MLB fandom is.

The players involved undermined the integrity of the game. The shame they have in the hearts is far more punishing than any punitive measure taken by the league.

While the Astros publicly embraced the villain role; privately, the boos, heckling and other stuff they face is a heavy burden on them and their families. It keeps going….

I’m of the opinion that Springer (Blue Jays), Correa (Twins) and Gonzales (Yankees) should have been banned permanently.

When Altuve tried to get the cheating to stop – they kept on. GM Luhnow did not share the MLB memo with the team. He claims he was not aware….B.S.

MLB made the decision to not revoke the Astros title. Should they have? Perhaps.

But the MLB brain trust did not. They also did not punish the players involved. Why?

That would have set off an epic firestorm among the players (current and former).

In a way, I would have liked to see it unfold. Some execs and players were really nervous. Brewers and Mets may have finally gotten their wish for MLB to investigate the Dodgers.
