Adam Duvall To Undergo Season-Ending Wrist Surgery

By TC Zencka | July 24, 2022 at 4:41pm CDT

4:41PM: Braves manager Brian Snitker told reporters that Duvall will undergo surgery, and Toscano reports that the procedure will end Duvall’s season.  The outfielder will finish 2022 with a .213/.276/.401 slash line and 12 homers over 315 PA, so between that inconsistent production and his wrist injury, Duvall could be facing a pretty modest market as a free agent this winter.

Marcell Ozuna, Guillermo Heredia, and Orlando Arcia could each be utilized as the right-handed hitting side of the platoon with Rosario, or the Braves could very possibly look to add a new outfielder to the mix prior to the trade deadline.

9:03AM: The Braves have placed outfielder Adam Duvall on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left wrist. Mike Ford has been recalled from Triple-A to fill Duvall’s roster spot, per Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter).

Duvall began the year as the Braves’ starting center fielder, but the arrival of Michael Harris II has pushed the veteran into a bench role. For the past few weeks, he’s been in a more-or-less straight platoon with Eddie Rosario in left field. Offensively, he hasn’t yet accessed the prodigious power output that makes him an effective role player. He does have 12 home runs across 315 plate appearances, but that only amounts to a .401 SLG and .188 ISO, numbers that come closer to average than Duvall’s career norms.

Ford, 30, will fill a short-term bench role as a left-handed bat for the Braves. He has already appeared in the Majors this season with the Giants and Mariners, as well as the Braves. And yet, he has accumulated just nine plate appearances between those three stops.

Not really a better option to call up right now, at least temporarily. He’s perfectly fine for a bench role for the short term. No need to start the clock on a prospects

I mean, idk if he’s injured, but we are splitting hairs arguing that either is significantly better than the other. And they are truly the only two we can call up at the moment. Not 100% if TD has options? Can’t remember if he was optioned or DFA and we were able to keep him. Ford 100% has this year as an option year and the talent gap isn’t enough for me to care. Maybe TD has the better upside and if so, I want him playing everyday in Gwinnett instead of the bench in atlanta … idk

I don’t think they’ve got enough to get him. Too many pitching needy contenders w/a lot more in their farms. I’d rather see them call Muller up than go after Quintana or some other broken armed near has been though.

I don’t think the Braves do anything at the deadline. If they do something, it needs to be for a reliever. Will Smith is terrible and can’t be trusted any more. I know they have Yates as a wild card coming back but I don’t think they should count on that being the missing piece to the bullpen.

Also a starter isn’t really necessary. Fried, Morton, Wright, and Strider still gives you 4 starters for the playoffs. Anderson isn’t really needed so even if he never gets it going the Braves are by no means dead in the water 1-4 in October. You also have Soroka coming back too and while he won’t be a true starter the hope is he could maybe eat up 2 or 3 innings at a time in October. So there’s a lot of options there. No need for a starter.

Outfield you could argue they go get someone but they probably won’t. Maybe they throw out a flyer sort of how they did last year (but on a smaller scale than bringing in 4 outfielders).

Personally I’d be really happy if they went and grabbed David Robertson and did nothing else. I don’t expect they will though, and I’d be ok with them doing nothing too. They look good enough to win it all again with what they have in my opinion.

Think the Braves see Yates as being a more likely option than Soroka this season. Soroka’s rehab stopped because of the liner to his knee while Yates has moved up to AA Miss and is continuing his rehab. While I tend to agree that they shouldn’t deal for a starter, I still think they should call up Muller as a hedge against Anderson’s ineffectiveness. A Muller/Anderson/Strider piggyback arrangement might aid Anderson’s awfulness after 2TTO and the possibility of Strider’s innings being curtailed. Lot of season left before the playoffs. Any injury to the starting staff would really hurt them. The Mets arguably have better starting pitching than the Braves—especially w/Scherzer back and a possible DeGrom return. Yes, btw—dfa Will Smith. Please.

No defensive right-handed bench guys that are on the braves means Benintendi will be Ill-fitted being platooned (LF) out of position. I understand that those few games are not about to tank a potential trade’s value, but since Harris is actually a young guy I don’t want to consider it an everyday possibility that Harris sits especially for that 4th outfielder guy or so Benintendi can get AB’s.

Beni wouldn’t be a cf option w/the Braves, What’s your objection to him playing lf? He’s been a lf’er for the better part of his career. Definitely not “out of position” if he’s a lf’er, and he wouldn’t take any playing time from Harris.

There isn’t one, and Harris is a sure`fire starting CF”:er for the foreseeable future. I do believe that the Braves have managerial tendency of shoving high OBP under the bus. Just ask G.Blanco..

I also think Beni is a 1st-team corner bat with enough on the defensive spectrum that free-agency can pay out the sum of 5/75 $ to.

Happ won’t be cheap. He’s having a career year, the Cubs don’t have a ton of valuable pieces and he’s one of their few dependable players right now. The Braves would be buying high on an extremely inconsistent, yet versatile player.

The best of Happ has yet to come… although I wouldn’t consider him an option at second base. Just because he can play second, doesn’t mean he should… then again, if he is a better option at second until Oz comes back then so be it.

I kind of feel that is teams want to nibble at the deadline like the Mets have so far, the Braves may be the team that pushes their chips in and attempts to go back to back.

Harris did not push Duvall to a bench role. Duvall was playing out of position in CF as a last resort. He’s always been a COF and emergency CF (last year’s playoff run). Rosario becoming healthy pushed Duvall to the bench, while Duvall’s hitting as a typical RH platoon – terrible vs. RHP (K-ratio: 36%), while decent against southpaws, which is unusual for his career.

The 8 June HRs and now IL stint has delayed the inevitable – a reduction in playing time.

Your not hearing any Ohtani/Soto rumors b/c they aren’t happening

The 6th playoff spot is also creating less sellers this year

The 2019 MLB draft is quickly becoming the 2019 MLB High School All-Star draft. All of the 2019 draftees missed the entire 2020 minor league season due to the COVID cancellation but there are at least 4 players that I’m aware of who were drafted in 2019 out of high school and have made their MLB debuts already after just one full season (2021) in the minors:

    1) Bobby Witt, Jr.- KC
    2) Riley Greene – DET
    3) CJ Abrams – SD
    4) Michael Harris II – ATL

It’s rare to see one high school draftee make it to the majors after just one full season in the minors; to have at least 4 make it is unheard of! Abrams is not really a full time player in SD, he is being shuttled back and forth but Witt, Harris and now Greene are not only on the MLB roster, but they have cemented themselves as starters now! I wonder if this has ever happened before? These guys are future all-stars and someone like Witt could be an MVP candidate if he continues to develop. What a great draft class for high school prospects! I’m sure there’s more on the way too.

Also, the current top position player still in MiLB is a high schooler form the draft: OF Corbin Carroll (ARZ) and pitcher: SP Daniel Espino (CLE). Special shout-out to #5-ranked Gunnar Henderson (BAL).

Are we sure Vaughn Grissom can’t play left field? He’s currently hitting better than Harris was at the same level. Maybe they can give him 10-15 games in left and call him up.

They need to keep him down in the minors. He might wind up playing SS in Atlanta next year.

I “liked” your comment because I agree w/keeping him at AA Miss. I don’t think he’s going to be playing shortstop next year though. He doesn’t have enough arm to play SS or 3B imo. Wouldn’t surprise me if they start playing him at 2B and left field to prep him for a super utility role though.

Lot to like about his bat and excellent obp skills, but when you finally see him play, I think you’ll agree on his lack of arm strength as far as SS/3B. I’ve seen more than a few other folks commenting on it.

A lot of high school and college teams put their best athlete at SS, but that doesn’t always mean their long term home is there.

Grissom was just promoted to AA (on 7/12/22), so he def needs some time to get acclimated especially since he looks like the best internal option at SS if they don’t re-sign Swanson, headed for free agency. If we’ve learned anything from last season, you can find COF upgrades on the cheap — and incoming COF going to free agency will relish the opportunity to be this year’s Soler, Pederson, Rosario, who all made millions more from their few months of performance on the grand stage.

Doubt it. He just went on the IL for Miami, and he’s got a 15 mill player option for next season. Like him a lot, but Braves should target another outfielder.—a healthy, cheaper one, lol.

To me, Anthony Santander is the name that sticks out. He’s a switch hitter with some pop. Not a star, but he’d probably come at a fairly affordable price.

Duvall’s injury definitely put the Braves into a trade market for an outfielder … with Heredia hitting .120 .. Rosario a big ?? back from eye surgery and Ozuna an adventure out there …,They could also use a utility player for infield depth . They will probably look at the pitching market but their farm system is very thin right now … AA will likely start by trying to get something for next to nothing !

It’s a shame for him, partly because he was just starting to warm up, with a .864 OPS in June and a .976 in July.

FWIW, ATL is the best hitting team vs. LHP in MLB. That’ll be important vs. LAD (Urias, Kershaw, Tyler Anderson), they still need to get through RHP Scherzer, deGrom, Taijuan Walker, Carlos Carrasco, Bassitt.
