Athletics Getting Closer To Frankie Montas Trade

By Steve Adams | August 1, 2022 at 12:20pm CDT

12:20pm: The Twins believe the A’s are wrapping up a trade sending Montas to another club, tweets Dan Hayes of The Athletic. That would suggest they’re among the teams who’ve been informed they’re no longer in the running, as suggested by Heyman.

12:15pm: The Yankees are willing to include top shortstop prospect Oswald Peraza in a Montas deal, tweets SNY’s Andy Martino.

12:01pm: The Athletics have begun informing some teams that they’re no longer in the running for right-hander Frankie Montas, tweets Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The Yankees are among the clubs who are still in the bidding, he adds.

It’s not clear just yet which clubs have been ruled out, but Montas has drawn widespread interest, with the Cardinals, Padres, Blue Jays and Twins among those who have joined the Yankees in their pursuit of the righty.

I believe the Cardinals are still in the mix for Montas. But, the Yankees are probably going to acquire him. Anyways, that’s fine because there are other pitchers available. There is a chance that the Cardinals acquire Soto and we cannot give the farm for both players.

They do have quite a history of trading middle IF, 2 of whom became stars and 1 became very solid, for pitchers, who invariably go on to disappoint: Semien for Samardzija, Escobar for Liriano, Madrigal for Kimbrel, and, of course, Tatis, Jr., for Kimbrel. If they did do this, it’d almost have to be Montgomery going back. After all, it’s a Sox tradition at this point.

And in case any of us Sox faithful have forgotten, that Samardzija trade was made much worse for the inclusion of Chris Bassitt. Hahn is great at acquiring young talent, terrible at trading said talent to round out a roster.

Tatis Jr was not traded for Kimbrel, he was traded for James Shields when Tatis was like 17 > terrible trade as James Shields was on the decline and fell off the cliff, but they traded Madigral and Cody Hauer for Kimbrel and unfortunately us Cubbies have not seen either of those players all year.

To be fair, Sheffield was sent to the Yankees as a future piece of the rotation, so we got excited because of the scouting report when the Miller trade was made. Still hoping he can turn into something good for the Mariners though,

Sheffield has actually thrown more innings for the M’s than Paxton threw for the Yanks. The case could be made that Paxton was the most overhyped player in that trade.

Yep, we all know that pinstripes make anyone 10x more valuable. It’s why I expect to hear the news of a Florial for Ohtani trade any day now, but the Angels may have to kick in someone, like maybe that Taylor Ward guy. Sucks on the Angels, might be decent if someone would just put pinstripes on him.

Actually kudos to both teams you have Milwaukee figuring that since they can offer him up now the price will be a bit steeper than holding on to him in the winter whereas the Padres GM is always wheeling and dealing to try and close the gap a bit against the Dodgers.

At lease both have GM’s not afraid to make a sensible deal all around whereas Cashman will hold on to the prospects until they are past 25 years old then they need their AAA card to get around because he deems them untouchable.

Nice job Twins, might want to repair that relationship with the A’s front office because you keeping failing over and over again at trading with them. Something is off there. Now we’re gonna have to overpay like crazy for Tyler Mahle. If they include Royce in that deal, they are the biggest bunch of IDIOTS to ever run a major league team. I actually expect it to happen.

I would rather overpay for Rodon especially if it’s already going to cost Peraza plus presumably another in the top 10. Just grab a third name from the top 10 and offer it to the Giants if that’s the case!

The article says peraza is “top shortstop prospect”

Could any yankees fans with more knowledge clarify that for me, because i thought volpe was the yankees top shortstop prospect? Is peraza better or should this article have worded that better. Something like “one of the yankees top prospects” or “a top shortstop prospect”

Volpe is in AA. Peraza is in AAA. Both are top prospects.

Ah ok. So quick side note. How many “top shortstop prospects” can each team have? Whats the overall consensus for that. Top 3 at each position? When i hear “top shortstop prospect” i would think that means the best.

As many as they want. Cashman overdrafts the SS position.

Montas is nasty sometimes, but he’s also not someone I’d pay the farm for. He’s a mid rotation arm on a team with a true ace. Top 30 arm for sure, but not top ten or even 20.

As a Yankees fan I’m disappointed to hear this. Cashman never learned from his mistakes. Never trust A’s pitchers. Montas has dreadful H/A splits. Peraza has been tearing it up AAA and is only 22yo.

I’d rather the As keep him. Tired of them constantly trading players just before they get expensive and the trading team watches the players they trade get paid league minimum for years.

Keep him for what purpose? The A’s are in full rebuild mode right now. There is no reason to keep Montas if they can get multiple prospects who would hopefully be part of their next contending cycle. That is the way the A’s do things whether you like it or not.

None at all if you’re the As it makes perfect sense. If you’re the rest of the majors you’re forcing a profit sharing team with a bad ball park to ante up their payroll and watch their profits dwindle.

Bad team, and bad stadium is a bad mix for baseball.

Best guess is its between Jays and Yankees. Both have been reportedly highly engaged and now its down to which team throws the best prospects. I am betting Billy is telling the Yanks that he is theirs if they include Volpe and not Peraza. If they do, they get him, if not, then the Jays will ante up a group of 4 with something like Jordan Groshans, Otto Lopez, Leo Jeminez and Sem Robberse…basically the 4,5,6,7 players in the Jays system. Would be surprised if Moreno, Martinez, or Tiedeman is involved for anything outside of Soto or Ohtani.

So ask for the Yankees top prospect but settle for a package that starts with the Jays 4th best prospect? Since all of Moreno, Martinez, and Tiedeman are not better than Volpe, that doesn’t make much sense. In fact, the only prospect of the Jays three best that’s comparable to Volpe is Moreno.

A’s have Murphy (MLB), Langeliers (AAA), Soderstrom (AA), just drafted 2-time all-american Susac, and signed Beau Taylor to a minor league deal as AAA depth.

WTF do they want with O’Hoppe?

Peraza as a centerpiece for Montas would be a win Yankees

It’s going to be tough though for any other team to top Peraza because he’s fringy premium level prospect which means to top Peraza you have to give up a premium prospect, something teams won’t do

He’s a high mid-tier prospect so unless you give up an upper tier prospect or other high mid-tier prospect you’re not going to beat Peraza

Yankees would win the trade because theyre giving up only a mid tier prospect for Montas

Rangers should be on the phone and telling other teams that SP Perez, RP Moore, CF/RF Garcia and 1B Lowe are available. And Calhoun, Miller and Culberson at 90% off.

Right now, Mo is inside a bathroom, staring at a mirror, reciting the lines he’s going to tell the St. Louis media…

“Look, we gave it our 100%, but in the end of the day it just didn’t quite match up. We were there in the end, but the asking price was just too high. We believe we have enough depth in-house to make a solid push into the playoffs this year.”

Hopefully the A’s Can do better then they did in trading Manea, Chapman and Olson…who essentially they only have Langiers to show for all 3 of those guys. I know the homers will argue we got some pitchers too, but there minor league numbers are not great and they’re not top prospects (top 100). They are Fringe A’s top 10 prospects at best and again that was for Olson, Chapman AND Manea.

He’d be a perfect fit for the cardinals. They are always on the hunt for pitchers with bum shoulders. No one knows how to prescribe rest and delay a surgery like the cardinals do.

    Hi Steve,
is there more sentence to this or is that’s it?

    More to come.
