Fernando Tatis Jr. Suspended 80 Games For Performance-Enhancing Drug Violation

By Anthony Franco | August 12, 2022 at 10:59pm CDT

Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 2022 season is over. In a stunning development, Major League Baseball announced Friday afternoon that the Padres star has tested positive for Clostebol, a banned performance-enhancing substance. He’s been suspended for 80 games without pay, effective immediately. Tatis, who confirmed he’s already dropped an appeal he’d initially filed, goes on the restricted list.

Tatis released a statement via the MLB Players Association (Twitter link):

“I have been informed by Major League Baseball that a test sample I submitted returned a positive result for Clostebol, a banned substance. It turns out that I inadvertently took a medication to treat ringworm that contained Clostebol. I should have used the resources available to me in order to ensure that no banned substances were in what I took. I failed to do so.

I want to apologize to (owner Peter Seidler), (president of baseball operations A.J. Preller), the entire Padres organization, my teammates, Major League Baseball, and fans everywhere for my mistake. I have no excuse for my error, and I would never do anything to cheat or disrespect this game I love. … I am completely devastated. There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be than on the field competing with my teammates. … I look forward to rejoining my teammates on the field in 2023.”

The Padres released a briefer statement of their own on the news:

“We were surprised and extremely disappointed to learn today that Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program and subsequently received an 80-game suspension without pay. We fully support the Program and are hopeful that Fernando will learn from this experience.”

Preller confirmed to reporters (including Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune and Dennis Lin of the Athletic) that the organization learned about the suspension this afternoon, around two hours before it was made public. The Padres baseball ops leader was forthright about his frustration, suggesting that “over the course of the last six or seven months, I think (trust has) been something that we haven’t really been able to have.” That’s presumably in reference to the motorcycle accident that fractured Tatis’ wrist. Preller continued, “I think we’re hoping that from the offseason to now, that there would be some maturity. And obviously with the news today, it’s more of a pattern and something we’ve got to dig a little bit more into. I’m sure he’s very disappointed, but at the end of the day, it’s one thing to say it. You have to start by showing it with your actions.”

Tatis will go the entire 2022 season without appearing in a major league game. (Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that he’ll also be barred from representing the Dominican Republic in next spring’s World Baseball Classic). The star shortstop sustained a fracture in his left wrist in an offseason motorcycle accident, an injury that was revealed when he reported to the team in Spring Training. He underwent surgery and was out of action for months. There was finally light at the end of the tunnel, with Tatis sent to Double-A on a rehab assignment last week. He’d played in four minor league games and was set to rejoin the big league club within a couple weeks. That’ll no longer be the case.

The Padres have 48 more games on the regular season schedule. That’ll leave him in position to miss as many as the first 32 games of the 2023 season as well, although Tatis’ suspension would be reduced for any playoff games he misses (if the Padres reach the postseason this year).

It’s a crushing blow to a San Diego team that enters play Friday night in possession of the National League’s final Wild Card spot. They’re just a game clear of the Brewers, setting the stage for a tightly contested pennant race. If they’re to get to the postseason, the Friars will have to do it without the elite midseason reinforcement on whom they’d been counting.

That’s not to say the Padres are doomed. They’ve been without the two-time Silver Slugger winner all season, and they’re nevertheless 12 games above .500 with a +40 run differential. The deadline blockbuster to add Juan Soto and Josh Bell looms larger than ever now. San Diego still has a fearsome middle of the order anchored by Soto, Bell and Manny Machado, while Jake Cronenworth and Jurickson Profar have each hit at above-average levels.

There’s no way to replace a player who owns a .292/.369/.596 slash line through his first three big league seasons, but the Padres are in as good a position as a team can reasonably be to weather Tatis’ absence. They’ve gotten strong play from Ha-Seong Kim at shortstop in his second MLB season. The former KBO star is hitting .247/.324/.371 through 392 plate appearances, exactly league average offense by measure of wRC+. Public metrics have pegged Kim as one of the sport’s top defensive shortstops, making him a more than adequate fill-in for the remainder of the season.

Perhaps the greater roster ramification is that San Diego now has little recourse to replace scuffling center fielder Trent Grisham. Tatis had been slated to play both shortstop and center field on his rehab assignment, and he may well have gotten more time in the outfield down the stretch. While Kim has held down shortstop effectively all year, Grisham owns a .195/.292/.357 line over 411 trips to the plate. He has continued on as the primary center fielder, although Wil Myers has gotten the nod the past three times the Friars have faced a left-handed opposing starter. Skipper Bob Melvin figures to stick with at least a soft platoon arrangement for the stretch run.

While the team will feel the strongest repercussions down the stretch this year, Tatis’ lack of availability in 2022 has to be alarming to the organization over the long term. He’s under contract for another 12 seasons beyond this one under the extension he signed in February 2021. That $340MM deal is the fourth-largest in MLB history, and there’s arguably no one more important to the franchise’s long-term future.

That deal is backloaded. Tatis’ forfeited salary during the suspension, while substantial, isn’t nearly as significant as it would have been had he tested positive a couple years from now. He’ll lose the remainder of this year’s $5MM salary (approximately $1.5MM) as well as around a month’s worth of next year’s $7MM salary. The extent of his salary forfeiture is dependent on how many games he loses next season, which is subject to how far into the playoffs the Friars get this year. He’s likely to miss around 20% of the schedule, which would translate to around $1.3MM in lost salary next year.

Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported that Tatis had failed a PED test and was facing a suspension.

In his defense, I have inside information that he meant that he took it for ringwald, as in Molly Ringwald. It’s now too confusing to correct this misspelling, or to explain the relationship with Molly, so best to just go with ringworm story for now

Actually, it might of put more pressure on Tatis to get back to full health sooner rather than later, making him decide on some bad decisions to meet the expectations of the team. Just a thought.

I bet this is closer to the truth of it. Less about getting an edge on other players, and more about trying to heal faster. Can’t condone it, but I understand this motivation.

Are you just going to ignore that Tatis Sr. was also tied to PED use before he snitched on other users in order to keep his name off of the Mitchell Report?

That would have to be part of the truth, wouldn’t it?

That’s the most ignorant thing I’ve ever read. Reread what you wrote, it equals to Tatis Jr making his OWN decisions to use. You can’t make someone take peds unless they WANT to. It’s his own fault no one else’s and certainly no one else’s actions.

You should know that the Anabolic Steroid he took is known to prevent the healing of bones, look it up! So this was a pretty piss poor attempt to get on the field “faster” because it did in fact do the exact opposite. My guess is this guy has been using for quite some time. His meteoric rise has JUICER written all over it!

Jimmy, if his suspension was over before the playoffs started he would not be allowed to play due to his suspension. So if he’s not eligible to play in those games I don’t see why he should get time off for them

What complicates clostebol cases is that it’s possible to test positive from contaminated meat (it’s used in some countries to fatten cattle) or over-the-counter antibiotic creams. The FDA does not allow U.S. products to include clostebol acetate, but it is listed as an active ingredient in creams sold in Europe and Central and South America.

We don’t know if he knew it was in it or tried to cover it up by saying he had ringworm. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t know that it was in the cream he was using to treat ringworm

That’s overstating things quite a bit – the White Sox were attempting to compete and traded for Shields to give them innings and hoping for a resurgence. They got him *relatively* cheaply due to his underperformance the year before, but at the time Sox fans felt somewhat uncomfortable with the trade – it was good to see them going for it (we thought!) but seeing Tatis on the list going back was concerning. He wasn’t a big prospect, but he wasn’t a nobody, either.

To be fair, I was roughly equally concerned to be losing either player – Erik Johnson also had some interesting potential…

This guy has some serious issues. He has the maturity of a 13 year old boy at best. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Tatis, Jr. received a loan from that predatory lending firm Big League Advance, where he borrowed up to $500,000 as a minor-leaguer because he wanted to live a flashy lifestyle; he now owes them about $28M of his new contract because of this horrible decision. Couldn’t he have borrowed this money from his dad or perhaps even a legit financial institution? What a terrible life decision made at an early age.

Then he gets on a motorcycle this past offseason (which is prohibited in his contract) and breaks his wrist, but doesn’t tell the team about it until he showed up to spring training. Then he wasn’t in communication with the Padres during his rehab as much as they wanted him to be and now he wraps that saga up with an 80 game PED suspension; all of this by age 23. The Padres have to be really concerned about the future of this guy and the massive investment they have made in him. I wouldn’t be surprised if SD looks hard at his contract to see if they can get out from under it; or possibly restructure it and recoup some money. If they can somehow void his contract, they might consider doing so and then use that money to lock up the much more mature Juan Soto to a record breaking deal. At this point, Preller & Co. has to have 10X the trust in Soto than they do with Tatis, Jr. With that said, if he remains with the team, you have to hope this is the wake up call he needed to start acting like an adult and a professional. He has definitely pushed the limits of trust with team ownership and only he (Tatis) can change that. Who knows, but maybe this will end up being a good thing for him in the long term if it makes him start taking responsibility for his stupid decisions to date and finally mature into an adult. It’s such a shame because he has the talent to be one of the best players of all time; he’s just missing the maturity and discipline to go along with that.

As a Nationals fan, Soto delivered a WS to DC with his play in 2019… and even this season, while surrounded by a whole lot of players that would maybe only start for the Pirates, he still produced at a decent clip. At one point this season he had nine home runs and 15 rbi’s. Bell was his only real help… but Bell batted after Soto.

If I were the Padres, I would unload Tatis’ contract through the legal system and find a way to lock up Trea Turner (another excellent SS that plays everyday, gives you excellent AB’s and will be a menace on the bases for another seven to eight years). Even Soto said he would want to play with Turner again due to the way he approaches the game. Soto is a coach’s dream… even with the Soto shake in the batter’s box that has to be annoying to an old school manager. His discipline at the plate is as good as it gets – even if he’s not pushing a .300 average. Walks lead to runs if you know how to play small ball. His off the field maturity is something worth mentioning as well. Good parenting goes a long way.

Signing a 30 year old Trea Turner is not a good plan. He seems to be the type who could possibly be an exception in terms of aging, but it wouldn’t be smart so sign him with that expectation. And he isn’t great to begin with- he’s a very good player.

There are always unknowns in this big of a trade. Far too early to say it was “stupid”. We have three potential playoff seasons with Soto. With the prospects we gave up it will take years to know the outcome. Is James Wood the next Aaron Judge? Will Gore be a staff’s ace? Doubtfu,l but we will see then.

Tatis Sr. rumored to have kept his name off the Mitchell Report by snitching on other users.

Hard for me to ignore. And I’m pretty sure that every player in the Mitchell Report that suspected that Tatis Sr. covered his butt by snitching on them, is laughing their butts off today.

Heck, I’m willing to bet a pitcher or 2 has already figured out a way to improve there spin rate outside of the rulebook. And, some teams are once again stealing signs … and … via something other than trash can communication technology.

That’s interesting because for a number of past PED suspensions, the news articles made it sound as though both the player and the team were made aware days if not weeks before the suspension was announced. Hence, we never hear about an appeal when a suspension is announced; any appeal took place before the suspension is made public. Did something change in the new CBA whereby only the player (and his agent) are notified of the positive test, not the team? I could see competitive reasons why the rule might be set either way.

Just thinking out loud, nothing more nothing less. As far as I know nothing is made public until the player says he’s not appealing the suspension or until the appeal is heard. This was the case in the past but as Marc brought up maybe that changed in the new CBA. There is another random idea for you to mull over…

          @Armaments216

They have to activate him before he starts his suspension, which they can do at any time since he’s already spent the minimum time required on the injured list.

But since he’s on the 60-day, they’ll need to put him on the 40-man first.

Fangraphs shows that the Padres only have 39 on the 40-man roster, assuming that’s correct, it’ll just be a procedural move.

Had there been 40 on the roster already, the Padres would have to DFA a player before they could activate him.

I guess what I’m asking is – does MLB want to make sure the player loses 80 days of actual playing time? As opposed to using some of his suspension to recover from an injury.

Understood about the roster implications and that the player loses the 80 games of salary regardless.

He will also be missing the 1st 30 games of next season, so it won’t be easily forgotten. Maybe if it was contained to 1 season and he returned within that 1 season and played as well as before. Much harder for it to be forgotten when it’s over multiple seasons (and especially if there’s a decline in production).

Yes! It’s amazing how many people forgot that Fernando Sr. was rumored to have kept his name out of the Mitchell Report by snitching on other users.

You hit the nail on the head. Like father, like son.

Also, does everyone forget that when Tatis Sr. arrived with the Mets, he was the one that recommended for Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado to go to Anthony Galea? Reyes had a career batting average high. Carlos Beltran had a career resurgence after a tough start in NY. Carlos Delgado had a late career renaissance after he spent about a year and a half looking all but done…then after that career rejuvenation, he got injured and was never the same after that.

We could read it the first two times you commented about Tatis and the Mitchell report.

Also, Delgado never played again after that injury, he had one below average season (by his standards, still a 101 OPS+) in his entire career and he’s famously one of a few sluggers during that era who never tested positive, and Reyes’ three best seasons (and the two highest average years) came when he didn’t play with Tatis. Beltran was a lot better before Tatis, and then a lot later, and cheated in another way.

This is a delusional take. Reyes was in his prime and in a contract year. Beltran a year removed from a monster year and the best playoff performance in baseball history, had a down year in his first year in NY as a free agent, which has happened to a lot of players. He was also in the midst of his prime and then stayed there for about the next 9 seasons. Delgado had a great year in Miami, great first year in NY, a slightly down year in year 2 in NY where his batting average dropped a whole 13 points and then he was back to career norms the following season. Literally none of what you say is true or has any credibility.

@Put It In The Books (fka MetsFan22)

Actually, Reyes never had a season like that one career year…before or after.

Beltran struggled at the beginning. True. And prime may be a reason it was only one year. But you can’t ignore the issue I mentioned about Galea.

With Delgado, I can tell you either forget or aren’t old enough to remember. Delgado had a full bad season and was having a bad season the next year for the first half. Then, in the second half of that season, he exploded and was essentially the best player in the second half of that season to bring his numbers up. Before that, the year and a half, he was struggling with a lot of things at the plate to where everyone was writing him off because they saw his bat speed was done along with the torque off his bat. All of the sudden, in the second half of that season, his bat speed returned, and his torque was so explosive that he was actually knocking balls out the park that were low and outside after he spent a season and a half struggling to even pull balls out down the short part of RF. But I imagine even if you saw those clips, you aren’t one of the guys that actually played enough baseball (if at all) to even know what everyone was talking about back then.

And debate all you want, the facts are, they all went to Dr. Anthony Galea at the recommendation of Fernando Tatis Sr. Do you think they went o Galea for legit treatment? They even went against team physician and MLB rules to go visit him. Why’d they do that? All of them were also tied to Angel Presinal…against MLB’s ban of Presinal…just like other PED users A#Roids and Big Papi did.

          Keep wearing those Mets Goggles.

of a sudden the Marlins were a model franchise to emulate. Take away 2020 where they were only 2 games over .500 and the Marlins haven’t had a winning season since 2009.

I’m not a dermatologist or a MD. I’m just a guy who read up on this and asked a family member who is a dermatologist.

One anti-inflammatory steroid with a similar name is clobetasol, but it doesn’t help with the infection.

Why did this bother you so much that you felt the need to chime in and imply the bogus notion that only some one who wants to feel like a hero would wish the HOF would be consistent on its morality clause and how it affects who goes in?

I wasn’t talking about racism at all so it’s weird that he/she/it would go there. I was justing it as an example of how the HOF morality clause that voters use to keep Bonds out is ridiculous because the morals of the HOF were already compromised. I wrote a paper on this back in college.

Because San Diego is in the thick of the race and was expecting Tatis back for the stretch run from injury. They just have gotten the news it’s a possibility hence pulled the trigger. As to why send him on a rehab assignment, they probably requested multiple tests to confirm and that takes time. A lot of times teams are aware a month or so ahead of time and they do whatever they can to retest or repute the accusation until they’ve run out. That’s what happened here.

I don’t doubt that other teams were doing it, but until you can provide proof that it was happening at the same level, they’re gonna stand out. Personally, I don’t care that much because I agree that other teams were probably doing it to a similar level, but without proof people are going to, rightfully so, have different opinions.

Did you know that some people genuinely believe that those Rockets championships should have asterisks by them due to Jordan not playing a full season during either championship? Therefore, is it not fitting that the Astros championship has an asterisk by it as well? Honestly, Cravenmoorehead, you sound offended yourself, but I get it: what the Astros did was wrong. Despite how you and other fans feel, the league in general has moved. Case in point: Trey Mancini, a cancer survivor, was excited about joining the Astros. I hope one day you can move on too and find it within yourself to stop being so bitter over it. You can also follow the advice you gave to Stroh: cope and seethe, little man, for the Astros are your 2017 world series champions regardless of how you feel. What you decide to do is up to you: move on, or live life bitter and angry. The choice is yours. Either way, you sound like you need a hug.

          Goastros123,

I appreciate the mental gymnastics on your end, but there are millions of baseball fans who feel the same as I do.

How would you feel if you found out the White Sox cheated in 2005? Your fan base would lose their collective minds. So quit trying to project your insecurities on others for being “bitter” because your 2017 WS is forever tainted. You should come to terms with that instead of being in denial just because it was your favorite baseball team.

          Cope. Seethe.

          Cravenmoorehead,

I appreciate you reinforcing my point: I accepted a long time ago that they cheated and it was out of my hands. By accepting that, it was totally easy for me to move on and accept that how I felt about all of it was totally irrelevant. Yes, many fans do share your feelings of anger and bitterness and I hope they can move on too. Also, the Astros weren’t good enough in 2005.

Cope. Seethe. Regardless of how any of us feel, the Astros are your 2017 World Series champions. Don’t be afraid to ask for a hug.

Also, CravenMoorehead, the White Sox cheating would not have bothered me because I was in middle school in 2005 and that year was the beginning of me being an Astros fan. It’s funny you talk about projecting insecurities because you sound miserable and yet you called some one else miserable. Lol. If you just let go and accept that how you feel about it is irrelevant, I promise you’ll feel so much better. You don’t want to go through life bitter and angry. However, as I already said, it’s entirely up to you. If that’s how you wish to live, then guess what: they did cheat. That title is tainted. However, at the end of the day, the Astros are your 2017 world series champions so cope and seethe.

And shame to his father for this because it’s hard to believe that Tatis Sr. didn’t have something to do with this just like Andy Pettite’s dad did.

Look, I’m a Dodgers fan, I hate the Padres, but I respected Tatis and his way of doing things. Hard not to with that kind of talent. But this, I just lost all respect for him. It’s sad. It will stain his entire career. Any MVP or accolades that he wins later will always be in question. Sad day for baseball.

I won’t forget that the Dodgers lost to the Red Sox in 2018 but the important factor of that year, the red sox weren’t using the extra video during the WS. That best of 7, that World Series, was completely legit, and the Dodgers lost, badly.

    A few questions:

    1. Do we think this is gonna be one of those “my doctor/rehab people gave me this thing we thought was allowed and it wasn’t used as a PED.”

    2. Why would a guy who’s already secured his bag and is rehabbing and not expected to be back until next year anyway risk losing any of his money or tainting his reputation this early into his career and contract?

    3. Does this mean guys like Tatis, Jr. and Cano were always doing PEDs and signed their big contracts while on PEDs?

    4. Even if you were doing PEDs leading up to a big contract deal, once that massive contract is signed, why keep doing the PEDs beyond pride? The money is *guaranteed*. If you suddenly go from a 25 HR 100 RBI 5 WAR player to a 9 HR 50 RBI 2.5 WAR player, you still get paid the money over the years on that contract.

So is it just ego, pride, insecurity and wanting to “live up to the deal” and knowing you can’t au natural?

Or… is it actual injuries and discomfort and the PEDs help guys heal faster, play through discomfort and limited mobility, etc. and so it’s actually done because they’re physically miserable?

    Thoughts?

My guess is actually a combination of all of them. Pride and ego probably being some of the major factors but I also think that rehab hasn’t been going as well as planned. He was supposed to be back by the All star break. And my guess is that he might not of known everything but basically said, do whatever it takes to get me back to full health. Plus, with the Padres in the playoff race, it became crucial for him to be back at max. And therein, lies the problem.

With Tatis Jr., don’t forget that his father, Tatis Sr., was also tied to PEDs. He was rumored to have kept his name out of the Mitchell Report by being one of the players that cooperated with the investigation and snitched on other users. Tatis Sr. was among the guys tied to PEDs with teammates with the Rangers, the Cardinals…and after he found a way to be good enough to stay on an MLB roster at the end of his career with the Mets, he was the guy that recommended Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado to go to Anthony Galea.

For anyone old enough to remember daddy’s history, it’s not a surprise that Tatis Jr. is using now.

My thing is that I don’t understand why so many people are shocked or speculating about things while ignoring a known thing about his dad’s history in the game.

It’s like if Keither Hernandez or any of the 1970s or 80s Pirates had kids in the game now who tested positive for cocaine use. Would anyone really be shocked?

Same thing. I’m just amazed that people just forget Tatis Sr.’s history with PEDs when discussing this thing aboutTatis Jr.

It’s simple. Like father, like son. Very likely Tatis Jr. has been using all along because his father gave it to him…in the very least, set the example.

Players tend to want to rehab injuries faster. Even when you’re locked into the big contract, some still feel pressure to get back on the field faster. It’s that “don’t want to disappoint my team” kinda deal. Perhaps after injuring himself in a non baseball related manner, he felt he owed it to his team to get back as soon as he could. Poor decision making overall though.

I think a PED hit should trigger the team being able to release the player, and the contract dissolved.

Personally too, I think something like a suspension for 80 games at this point is too light.

At least the rest of the current season and the complete season after. Add penalties like additional suspension time for playing in other leagues or countries.

After one hit, get another, lifetime ban.

      Get the juicers out.

I believe there is a substance or two that be come up on tests in extremely small amounts where cross contamination at the factory could possibly cause a failed test. Just saying, I wouldn’t immediately assume a player was juicing when they get a PED suspension. There’s been several recently suspended players that were very adamant about not juicing.

That contract, while looking quite large, had an a average of $24M per year, which would have paid him far less than other contracts for aging players that soured near the end. $24M a year for a player that looked to be a perineal All Star, MVP candidate and possible HOFer, seems team friendly to me.

$24M guaranteed annual with all the perks players get is in no way team friendly.

Just because other teams are squandering more for less doesn’t make this even remotely wise by any means.

Team friendly? I think the jury is still out on that designation. Giving that extension when they did, for as much as they did can absolutely be questioned. That said, I doubt it had much to do with Preller, that’s likely an ownership decision.

That contract- especially while his playing time would have been under team control for another 4 years- is looking dumber and dumber. And it’s almost always stupid to sign anyone for more than 8 years (and anyone 28 or over for more than 5 years).

It was always beyond stupid to give him that deal. It was even more stupid to trade the farm system for Juan Soto. The Soto deal was done to attempt to Win Right Now! Tatis just blew the whole thing up.

Padres traded farm system for Soto. Got swept by Dodgers. Tatis suspended 80 games for juicing blowing up the entire plan.

Soto will not be re-signing with the Padres. They nuked the farm system for a “rental” player on a team that will be without Tatis for next 80 games. When Tatis returns we may find out that he performs like Robinson Cano when not on the juice. A “championship” move signing Soto …. By a team that now has NO title chances.

I think it depends on who you are…for the future of the Padres franchise I think it was stupid. For AJ Preller, I think it probably makes sense. If he can’t win between now and 2024 season, he’s probably out anyway.

Unless they’re able to draft/develop extremely well over the next couple years, they’ve basically reduced their window for contention to the next 3 or so years.

Bonds pre-steroids had better speed than Tatis and was a much, much better defender. It’s also extremely unlikely that Tatis will be able to match Bonds’ pre-steroids production at the plate. No comparison.

Barry Bonds was 1 of the fastest players in MLB, Tatis has very good speed but isn’t close- Bonds was truly elite speed/base stealing. Bonds was a very good and at times exceptional defender- Tatis has been mediocre at his best. I left open the possibility that Tatis could match Bonds’ production at the plate, but it’s extremely unlikely. There is zero chance the speed will improve- and there is close to zero chance the defense will improve to anywhere near Bonds’ level (especially since Bonds had multiple seasons of exceptional defense).

They will be very good next year Barry Imo –

Tatis gets a good rest and they give Kim a long runway to just settle any Ss debate going further thus giving Tatis time to find another less stressful position-( 1b LF )

Will be interesting how they go about filling out the 2024 starting staff tho. Not too many resources left internally or in the pocketbook. Pitchings been their jam the last couple years. But for 2023 I still see them a Top 5 Nl team quite easily

Does nobody think that Defense doesn’t play a major role in winning games anymore???

Tatis and Soto are BOTH below average defenders. Machado is no spring chicken. Break the bank deals for 1 dimensional players. Baseball remains a team game.

This team is poorly put together with a bunch of high profile names. Nuking the farm system was the WORST thing they could have done. You cannot build a team with free agents.

      Richalds and Opener,

I still believe that Tatis will have an impressive career, stat-wise. Think Nelson Cruz, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro. But he is no longer the face of the game, just two-faced. I am not sure that the contract will end up being that bad, not say as bad as Hosmer or Corbin. I could easily see Tatis outperforming Corey Seager over the next decade. But we won’t know how much of his talent was real until he plays for many years without another positive test. But if Tatis is getting a lot of verbal abuse here, can’t say he hasn’t earned it.

      • TheOpener

Seager is already solidly into his late 20s. Tatis definitely needs to perform better over the next decade. And the Seager contract is another terrible deal- 10 year contract for a 28 year old who only posted All Star production (barely- since 5 WAR is considered the beginning of All Star production and Seager has has never posted more than 5 WAR) twice in his career- and not since 2017. The decline phase typically begins before 30. Seems like teams will never learn that basic fact. The Rangers gave him a 10 year contract and will be lucky to get 3 seasons out of him before the very noticeable decline begins (not that Seager was ever great to begin with)

Seager’s WAR totals are tainted by his health. 2017 coincidentally was the last time he played anywhere near a full schedule.

Obviously, health concerns pose an entire new question about that contract, but saying that a healthy Seager doesn’t have All-Star production is inaccurate.

It is accurate. He hasn’t posted All-Star level production since 2017, and it was barely All-Star level production even then. The fact that his fragility has contributed to it is irrelevant at best and arguably makes it even worse. They signed a highly fragile late 20s player who has averaged less than 4 WAR per season to a 10 year contract.

Seager was also a FA. The thing about the Tatis contract that made it questionable was that they didn’t need to extend him yet, certainly not for as much as it cost them to.

Would consider signing a player who would be 26 the 1st year of the contract to 8 years. Subtract 1 year for each age beyond that until it reaches 3 year contracts- would consider signing anyone 35 or under for 3 years. No player for more than 8 years and beyond age 35 it would be 2 year contracts at the most.

As a Dodger fan, I didn’t expect Tatis to make much of an impact for this playoff run. As we’ve seen with many other players, no one comes back from a broken wrist without struggling for an extended period upon the return. My guess is, he would have been a .700 OPS guy for the remainder of the season and playoffs, before coming back at 100% in 2023.

The idea that he started using ped’s after becoming hellbent on good health seems unlikely. More likely, he was hellbent on securing a huge contract and was using ped’s prior to the $340 million.

Profar hit 20 HR in 2018 with TX and then 20 HR in 2019 with OAK. He has 12 so far this year so he’s on pace to hit like ~17. Not exactly a huge power surge. SLG is in line this year with those years as well.

Profar’s improvements appear to be in two areas that I wouldn’t necessarily think roids. His defense in LF has been great and his plate discipline is also better. He’s striking out less, walking more, and seeing more pitches.

Around these parts, an OPS leader is the best hitter on a team. Instead of inventing a slangy term like “ops leader,” your writing would be clearer (to me, anyway) if you took the trouble to spell out “head of (or president of) baseball operations,” even though typing the additional letters might seem an onerous task and less sportswriter-y. You seem to have your story so screwed up that you got the identities of the players wrong: it was Pujols who threatened a lawsuit, and he followed up and filed one against Clark:

‘Clark was hired as a sports talk host on St. Louis radio station WGNU in August 2013, co-hosting “The King and the Ripper” with longtime St. Louis radio personality Kevin “the King” Slaten. At least twice during the show’s first week, Clark accused Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols of using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) while Pujols was with the Cardinals. Clark had said that he talked to Pujols’ former personal trainer and said that “I know for a fact he was” using PEDs.[21] Pujols responded by threatening Clark and WGNU with a defamation lawsuit, and vehemently denied that he had ever used PEDs. The trainer added that he hadn’t even talked to Clark in over ten years. InsideSTL Enterprises, the company that owns WGNU’s weekday airtime through a time brokerage agreement,[22] cut ties with Clark and Slaten after only seven shows.[21][23][24] On October 4, 2013, Pujols filed a lawsuit against Clark.[25] In response on October 14, Clark challenged Pujols to both take polygraph tests to resolve who is telling the truth.[26] However, on February 10, 2014, Clark apologized and retracted his accusations against Pujols, saying he had “no knowledge whatsoever” that Pujols ever used PEDs. “During a heated discussion on air, I misspoke”, Clark said. In return, Pujols dropped the suit.[27]’

        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Clark_(baseball)#Contro…

Clark also claimed Verlander’s velocity was down when he’d recently hit 101 MPH.

In sum, it appears that Jack Clark was full of crap.

All they have to do is make it to the playoffs and see what happens from there. Listening to the Padres post game interviews right now and seems like the players won’t miss him much. (Yikes!) I do hope Tatis can bounce back from this both personally and professionally.

MLB needs to test Juan Soto next. Been watching this guy for a while now. One of the biggest benefits that Barry Bonds got from steroids was improved vision. Yes, improved vision. Look it up!!! Bonds literally didn’t swing unless the ball was over the plate, and then he would hit it out of the park. He walked constantly because during his prime roid use his vision was absolutely superior. Swung at NOTHING off the plate. As soon as you put the ball over the plate, he hit it out of the park. Remind you of someone named Soto????

That’s a myth. Steroids don’t improve visual acuity. What they do is strengthen fast-twitch muscles so a batter can wait on a ball to travel deeper into the zone and still swing the bat fast enough to barrel it up. This gives him split seconds longer to recognize the pitch, and those split seconds make a big difference. Steroids improve visual acuity in some patients suffering from diabetic macular edema, but that’s not the same thing as making a healthy ballplayer see the ball better.

I know that McGwire had lasik surgery that gave him exceptional vision, but I’ve never heard any player say that the juice made him see better.

it is a good beginner’s steroid that doesn’t aromatize and provides athletic performance enhancements. Not a hulk Hogan bulk muscle-building kind of steroid, but a mild lean muscle-building type, perfect for an athlete like Tatis.
There is a big problem with it in Europe sports where it is more accessible.
Not even meant for use on ringworms.

And AJP can rebuild a farm system with one draft and one Intl class…#1 C (#4overall) Intl signing prospect Ethan Salas joining Pads .. and 2021 draft class (wood traded) but still has Merrill and like 10 others who are all potential top 150ish with Merrill a top 20 of not higher path..and then there is 2022 draft where 4 1st rd arms went to the Pads..Lesko was already projected #4 and Snelling #7 BEFORE the trades.. so the system is already “growing” beyond the traded specs

Interesting factoid; the Chicago White Sox recently released Elijah Tatis on July 30, 2022, whom is the brother of Fernando Tatis Jr. I was not sure of the White Sox’s reasoning why they released Elijah Tatis but it had to do with underperforming and not playing well. Elijah Tatis never played above the rookie level league. It seemed like the Elijah Tatis could have been doing PEDs just like his brother.

So I ask, is Tatis Jr the real deal or is he a product of PEDs? Just how long has he been using.?
Once his suspension is over, I wonder if he will resume being a “superstar” or just another flunky who will be laughing all the way to the bank.
The Padres may have been mislead by Tatis Jr and what his true talents really are. Only time will tell.

I’m not really surprised by this. Tatis is 24, just signed a huge long term contract, has been fighting various injuries for a while, and is under pressure to return and perform well because his team is hell-bent on making the playoffs this year. Of course he’d try steroids to speed up his recovery and play well for the stretch run. He’s under a lot of pressure out of the gate. It’s not the smartest decision he’s ever made, but I can see why he made that decision.
