Injury Notes: Abreu, Britton, Kershaw

By Darragh McDonald | August 21, 2022 at 2:57pm CDT

The Yankees placed right-hander Albert Abreu on the 15-day injured list today due to right elbow inflammation. The club didn’t provide any estimated timeline for Abreu’s absence, but an issue with a pitcher’s throwing elbow is always somewhat concerning.

Abreu went from the Yankees to the Rangers in the offseason as part of the Jose Trevino trade. He lasted less than two months in Texas, getting designated for assignment and then traded to the Royals. About three weeks later, he was designated again and returned to the Yankees on waivers. Between the three teams, he has a 3.32 ERA on the year in 38 innings.

Other injury notes from around the league…

  • Though losing Abreu isn’t good news, the Yankees got much better news elsewhere on the roster. Manager Aaron Boone tells Joe Trezza of MLB.com that lefty Zack Britton recently threw a bullpen and is nearing a rehab assignment. Now 34, Britton was one of the best relievers in all of baseball from 2014 to 2016 while with the Orioles. His strikeout rate tapered off after that, though he still got grounders on over 70% of balls in play. 2021 was a down season, as he registered a 5.89 ERA before hitting the injured list in August. He eventually required surgery to repair his UCL, which wiped out what was left of that season and threatened his 2022 as well. In November, general manager Brian Cashman said it was “probable” that Britton would miss all of this season, though it seems he’s still got a shot of returning. There’s just over six weeks remaining in the regular season, but the Yanks are a virtual lock for the postseason, giving Britton a bit more time to make an impact. He’d no doubt love to get back on the hill and help the team, while also showcasing his health before reaching free agency this winter.
  • The Dodgers could potentially get Clayton Kershaw back sooner than expected. Just yesterday, it was reported that he could soon go out on a rehab assignment and return in the second week of September. Manager Dave Roberts now tells J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group that the plan is for the lefty to throw a bullpen on Monday, followed three or four innings in a simulated game later in the week before being activated without a rehab assignment. That would seem to open the door to Kershaw returning before the month of August is complete. Kershaw’s return would only further strengthen the rotation, which also welcomed Dustin May back yesterday. Kershaw’s been dealing with back issues this year, but has a tremendous 2.64 ERA in 85 1/3 innings when healthy.

Great news on Britton. Seems like relievers this year for the Yankees end up with arm trouble when they are ineffective.

    Abreu sucks. Designate him.

Why? Which guy off the 40-man are you looking to replace him with?

Abreu doesn’t suck at all, he won’t be designated either. Give ‘em a break. He had a bad week. He’s staying. Nice power arm.

Hi power arm throws a straight FB. His last recorded out was a K with Abreu going to his off speed stuff w
and abandoning his FB, which sucks.

@Bright Side- just please stop! Your acting like he’s the next Kyle Farnsworth or something? He’s no Farnsworth! Abreu is staying! Buy his jersey.

That was a convenient injury time Abreu.

Maybe Hicks will soon have some limb go sour in the next few days.

At this point Chapman is more likely to be cut than Abreau.

I just don’t either being cut truthfully. It might be Lucas Luetge who’s designated for assignment instead. Luetge has been really good when needed all year.

Certainly. Abreu is the future and Chappy is the past. Let’s see if Britton can be healthy now for a change?

Great, have a newly repaired Britton come back and walk even more batters than he has the past 2 years. Britton is past his expiration date, no thanks.

You do realize he was injured last year, has always had an elevated walk rate and has consistently had a 70% GB rate? If he can be anything close to career average he’ll be an asset.

Looks like the Dodgers will be stuck with Kershaw and his 2.64 ERA as their #5 pitcher.

      Love it.

Kershaw and Britton mentioned in same article. Two of three lefty pitchers drafted in 2006 with highly regarded starter stuff (Andrew Miller the other).

All 3, needless to say, very productive careers both on field and at the bank. The glaring difference? One is making 31 mil this year, one 13 mil, the other recently retired was at 13 +/- mil last year. Why the disparity in pay? One was and is comfortable in the starter role, the other two found success working the back end of a game.

I hope both CK and ZB are healthy come post season time. Pretty cool if WS game 7 had both in the thick of it.

Physically, all 3 have/had generational talent. Only one of them had that instinct of self preservation at a high enough confidence level to be a starter. And that’s nothing against Zach or Andrew. Heck there will always be examples of can’t miss physical talents that couldn’t get out of the minors because of the mental side of the game. Next.

Good news for the Yanks is they will be part of 2022 history of being the team to sweep the Mets and be ingrained as one of the teams to lead the Mets towards their first monumental collapse since 2007.

I have to share this with my fellow Yankee fans. I’m really happy for Joey. The SoCal vibe seems to suit him:

And note: these hits were off Alcantara, the league ERA leader.

The article mentions this but it is buried… Gallo also threw a runner out at home and had a diving catch in LF. OPS over 1.000 with LA. He’s been a very nice boost

Well, DogDays, in pinstripes he wasn’t very good. But it would be nice if his turnaround in L.A. got some fans to thinking about the wisdom or lack thereof of booing players like Joey, who was manifestly trying hard to succeed in New York.

I don’t expect that it will, though.

I don’t mind fans booing a player who’s dogging it; but Joey ran out every ground ball and played hard in the field, and his teammates attested to his strong work ethic. In a sense, NYC fans were just cutting off their nose to spite their face by piling on Joey.

The Dodgers will be fine with that – it will be with power, and his usual good defense.

Abreu is one of Cashman’s faves that he obesses over. Cashman dealt Brian McCann to the Astros to get him and kept him regardless of his mediocre, injury filled minor league career. He kept Abreu over Whitlock. He finally dealt him to Texas for Trevino. After being cut by the Rangers and Royals, Cashman brought him back. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Yankees put him on the IL just to stash him as Abreu is out of options. Bad GMs obsess over guys like him.

@Bright Side- Abreu is the least of our problems, just take a chill pill already. This is why baseball fans hate all of us. Abreu has to do with a struggling offense now? You can’t get except him to never give up runs, especially with runners are always on when he gets in there all the time. You can go, my boi Abreu stays.
