Injury Notes: Walker, Thompson, Garcia

By Darragh McDonald | August 20, 2022 at 2:53pm CDT

Mets’ starter Taijuan Walker will not make his scheduled start tomorrow, manager Buck Showalter tells Tim Healey of Newsday. The righty has been dealing with a bulging disc in his back, which could push him back to Tuesday. Although it’s good that the injury isn’t significant enough to send him to the injured list, it still creates a short-term problem for the Mets.

Since they also sent Carlos Carrasco to the IL recently and are playing a doubleheader today, they will have to come up with some sort of solution to trudge through to their next off-day, which is on Wednesday. Max Scherzer can go on Monday. Jacob deGrom could start Tuesday but could also get some extra rest if Walker is ready to go. Chris Bassitt pitched last night and isn’t an option for a few days. David Peterson and Trevor Williams are scheduled to start today’s games, but Williams isn’t fully stretch out and was only able to throw four innings in the first game.

Jose Butto is the only starter on the 40-man roster that could be recalled, which seems to be in the cards since Healey relays that Butto is on the taxi squad. It would be a big jump for Butto if he is thrown into tomorrow’s game, since he’s been in Double-A all season and only got promoted to Triple-A on August 8. He has a 4.12 ERA on the year between the two levels.

Other injury tidbits from around the league…

  • The Cubs placed starter Keegan Thompson on the 15-day injured list today, tweets Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. Thompson is dealing with low-back tightness and will have to miss a few turns through the rotation. This will put at least a temporary hold on what has been a nice breakout season for the 27-year-old. Through 25 games this year, 17 starts, he has a 3.97 ERA, 20.5% strikeout rate, 8.3% walk rate and 40% ground ball rate. The Cubs have little reason to push Thompson if he’s not feeling 100%, given that they are well out of contention at this point in the season. They also have little certainty in their rotation going forward, with Marcus Stroman and Kyle Hendricks taking two spots next year, leaving plenty of room for less experienced pitchers like Thompson next year.
  • The Tigers have had nothing but miserable luck on the injury front this year, with just about every starting pitching option spending at least some time on the IL. Rony Garcia has made 16 appearances for the club this year, with eight of those being starts. However, he might not be able to add to that total, with manager A.J. Hinch telling Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic that Garcia is likely done for the year. He’s been on the IL since late July due to shoulder soreness, the second time this year a shoulder issue landed him on the shelf. It seems it’s lingering long enough that he might not make it back to the hill this year. If that’s indeed the case, he’ll finish the season with a 4.41 ERA over 51 innings.

Gettint shut down by Butto would be the perfect way for the Phillies to finish off getting swept.

I can 100% see that. The Mets are a great team, much better than the Phils, but the Phillies never seem to show up in the Mets series.

If I were you, I’ll just let the Mets use up all their wins on the Phillies in the regular season this season. If these two teams meet in the playoffs, the Phils are due to win. If they don’t see each other this season, the Phillies team will probably be better next season.

I don’t see either of these things being true. Mets are going to be good for the next 2 seasons at least. Phils are a fringe playoff team at best.

Maybe it won’t happen, but we are talking baseball after all. We have seen crazier things before.

Anyways, the Phillies will not continue to waste prime years of Harper, Wheeler, Nola, etc… Whatever happens this season, I just can’t see them doing nothing this off season. Hopefully (not really) for the sake of the city, they refine their needs and focus more on defense with their additions. Also, improve the bullpen. The Phils 1-3 can be as good as what the Mets will have next season. They just need to switch up their offense and bullpen. The Mets have some important decisions to make as well. Just because they have stupid money, does not mean it will lead to wins – just look at the Padres.

The Phillies bullpen has been phenomenal. So there’s not much to address there. Their offense has been horrible lately, they’re banged up,and their defense stinks.

So you still think Joe Girardi was at fault? The team just does not show up when playing the Mets. Even with all their problems this season, they play well against other teams including the Braves. The Phillies were playing poorly against the Marlins last season, but turned it around this season. If only the Phillies helped the Braves this season and not the Mets win the division.

Joe Girardi mismanaged the bullpen. Thomson does not. The team is completely different post Girardi. I don’t see how anyone can defend Girardi at all. He did a bad job with what he had. As for the Mets, they’re just a really good team who own the Phillies.

Phillies are 62-43 against teams that are not the Mets.

If the season series between the two was 9-8 Mets, all three teams in the East would be fighting it out till October. Sadly, the Phillies will decide who wins the East this season. The Phils have 7 with the Braves left with possibly a healthier team (Harper). The Phillies already broke the Braves hearts in 2011. Don’t do it again please!

Exactly. The Phillies are the difference. The Braves are .500 against Philly. The Mets are 11-3.

It is okay. At least 2 of the wins you didn’t give them, they didn’t deserve anyway.

Having some Philly people over to watch the game tonight and not only are they getting frisked before entering, they are getting frisked on the way out as well. It’s a shame in this day and age but they are known to be aggressive and have a way of stealing things that you don’t know are missing for a few days after
