Marlins Open To Trading From Rotation Surplus Again This Offseason

By Darragh McDonald | August 29, 2022 at 11:59pm CDT

As last year’s offseason was getting started, reports emerged that the Marlins were considering trading from their stock of young starting pitchers in order to bolster their position player mix. In the end, they did trade Zach Thompson as part of the Jacob Stallings trade, though stopped short of a more headline-grabbing deal.

It seems that strategy is still in play, with Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reporting that the club will again look to swap some pitching for some more offense. The report lists ace Sandy Alcantara and the club’s top prospect Eury Perez as the two “untouchable” arms on the team, with the others apparently available for the right price.

In addition to the Thompson trade, there were a few other ways in which the club’s rotation surplus was reduced in the past year. Prospect Max Meyer made two starts before Tommy John surgery put him out of action for the rest of this year and potentially all of next year as well. Sixto Sanchez has continued to deal with shoulder issues, not having thrown in a game since 2020. Elieser Hernandez struggled enough that he got bumped to the bullpen and later optioned to the minors.

Those setbacks aside, the club still has a mix that includes Alcantara, Pablo Lopez, Edward Cabrera, Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers, Braxton Garrett, Daniel Castano, Nick Neidert, with the report listing Lopez, Cabrera and Rogers as logical trade candidates. It also says the club would consider dealing prospects to a rebuilding team in order to get MLB-ready players. Though Perez is apparently not on the table, Jake Eder and Dax Fulton are mentioned as possibilities.

Lopez, 26, is no stranger to trade rumors, having been frequently mentioned both as someone who could be moved and as someone garnering interest around the league. It was reported last week that the Marlins and Yankees had discussed a deal prior to the deadline that would have seen the Fish acquire Gleyber Torres and infield prospect Oswald Peraza, though the Yanks apparently balked at the deal. There’s no real hurry for the Marlins to deal him, as he can be controlled through the 2024 season via arbitration. He’s in his third straight strong season, registering a 3.66 ERA through 25 starts this year. Perhaps most importantly, he has stayed healthy and put aside some concerns after he missed some of last year with shoulder issues. He’s making $2.45MM this year and will get a raise for next season via arbitration, though he will still be plenty affordable and should find lots of interest from other teams.

The 24-year-old Cabrera would make for a very different trade chip, having much more control but less of a proven track record. He just made his MLB debut last year and missed about six weeks this season due to elbow tendinitis. He only has 15 MLB starts on his ledger so far but has shown promise in that time, registering a 3.71 ERA in his young career. He came into this year with just 40 days of MLB service time but was optioned in the spring and didn’t get recalled until June 1, which should lead to him coming just shy of the one-year mark at the end of this season, even if he remains in the big leagues for the rest of the campaign. That means he should still have six years of control beyond this one, though he is in his final option year, which will mean he will need to hold a spot on an MLB roster starting next year or else be designated for assignment.

Rogers, 24, broke out last year with a 2.64 ERA over 25 starts but has regressed here in 2022. He has a 5.85 ERA through 19 starts and has been on the IL for over a month due to back spasms. He should still hold appeal given his previous showing and four remaining years of control, but he’ll certainly have diminished trade value compared to a year ago.

Eder, 23, was a fourth-round draft pick in 2020. The lefty made 15 Double-A starts last year with a 1.77 ERA before undergoing Tommy John surgery in August. He’s out for this year and might be limited in 2023, though the Marlins are hoping to deal him to a rebuilding club, who may not be so concerned about the short-term outlook. Fulton is also a left-hander but much younger, turning 21 in a couple of months. He was a second round pick in 2020, having since climbed up to Double-A. Between High-A and Double-A this year, he has a 4.05 ERA across 102 1/3 innings.

Whether the club can work out a deal with will of course depend upon lining up with another club. A team with designs on immediate contention would likely be more interested in Cabrera, Rogers or Lopez, while a rebuilding club would lean towards Eder and/or Fulton. It will also depend on what that theoretical other club has to offer the Marlins in return. As Jackson and Mish note in their report, the Marlins will be using the final weeks of the season to audition certain position players and evaluate their future roles. JJ Bleday, Lewin Diaz, Jerar Encarnacion and Peyton Burdick are all listed as players trying to secure jobs on the 2023 team. How they fare in those auditions could have an impact on who the Marlins look to target in trades to improve their lineup. The team as a whole has been about 12% below league average at the plate this year, as indicated by their 88 wRC+, a mark that places them 26th in the majors.

Would you say this is serious, or do the Marlins just like to stay relevant on talk radio shows? Based on their “moves” at the deadline, I think they prefer the hypothetical. They’re also big on talking about moves that “almost” happened. Seems like they’re jerking the fanbase around.

In any case, how do Marlins fans feel about Nolan Gorman?

I still say Arenado won’t opt out. But if he did, yes, I agree the Cards wouldn’t top the market and they would then need Gorman. Unless they believe Walker is ready to make the jump. He could take over at 3rd.

First of all, you’d have to teach Gorman how to play defense. The way he currently plays defensively, he belongs on the White Sox.

Is it weird? Since 93 the Marlins have more championships than every team not named the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, or Cardinals…. So there’s that.

I don’t have the stats in front of me, but I betcha since 93 they also have the most losses in all of mlb and the most losing seasons. Might have the most last place finishes, and just might have the lowest avg fan attendance with the lowest revenue steam. I don’t know for a fact on all of those… but we all are looking at it thinking it very well could be true. So hush on your 2 championship, meaningless when the marlins continue to embarrass baseball with the product they typically put on the field.

The correct answer to what team has lost the most games since 1993 is the Pirates by a good margin. The Padres have also lost more games since then… I didn’t keep going. Don’t ever hush me again if you’re going to be too lazy to fact check yourself. My point is just that there is plenty of reason to consider the Marlins a rival.

Since this version of the NL East was created, the Marlins are tied with the Braves for the most championships by an NL East team.

          Marlins – 2 (1997 and 2003)
          Braves – 2 (1995 and 2021)
          Phillies – 1 (2008)
          Nats – 1 (2019)
          Mets – 0

It’s truly irrelevant. They have only a handful of winning season in their franchise existence. They are the black sheep of baseball. Year in and year out, they continue to put a horrible product on the field…. Yes, 2 champs… good for them… but I’ll take 1 champ with consistent winning tradition that 2 champs and a culture that glorifies losing… the marlins = bad for baseball

The cubs have an abundance of young OFers and they all can play defense. They would be in a position to flip two of them for a quality young pitcher. They’d likely throw in Madrigal, as a kicker.

In the NL East, the Marlins, Nats, Phillies and Braves don’t really despise each others fans. They all despise the loud, obnoxious fans of the Mets though. The Mets are the Meg Griffins of the NL East. That’s why it’s hard to build a rivalry in our division.

The Yankees will definitely be in play for Pablo López in the off-season. The Fish definitely need some offense in their weakened line-up. The Yankees could definitely move a combination of Gleyber Torres, Everson Pereira, Clarke Schmidt, Gomez or Gil. It will likely be Torres traded not Peraza. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees will trade Jasson Dominguez and Mike Sweeney considering they were both offered in a package for Luis Castillo. We’ll see.

Lopez may be less in play for the Yankees considering the strong package the Fish demand for Lopez…..who also has not pitched very well in the second half with an ERA north of 5.5 runs pregame allowed…..and especially given that they want a “package” back for him……and I would think the Yankees are definitely not going to take a part time SS back as the second player coming over with the play of Cabrera and Peraza knocking at the door……

MLB teams today have to develop their own players – both in the minors and at the ML level.

The Marlins haven’t been able to improve their position players for years now. What makes them think that if they acquire productive position players that those players will remain productive? The Astros and now Orioles don’t draft many pitchers and they seldom have many as top prospects. But they always seem to have good pitching. Why is that?

The Os finally have the correct FO with analytics dept. as well as proper coaching especially with pitching
Check Austin voth… absolute helmet with the nats… Os turned him around..
Entire bp… who wanted or knew a single one of them and saw value in them?
Jorge Lopez then flipped 4 prospects
Spencer Watkins kinda.. considering he was a bargain bin.. #5 starter.
Wished we would if held onto hunter Harvey… know he was from the previous fo regime but he’s got the “stuff” just needs to learn to pitch sequence. Which in small sample turned it around but elsewhere
Starts from the top down.. marlins still don’t have it.

Marlins need a complete organizational overhaul. They won’t do it, but they should. They are horrible at drafting, development and roster construction. The only thing they have any competence with is SPs. Kim Ng made one of the worst signings of the offseason in Garcia and Soler. Both are expensive and neither provide much offensively.

Hmmm? So the Marlins are horrible at developing players, but yet have developed a lot of stud pitchers.

I guess that makes sense somehow…in some multiverse somewhere.

Technically, that qualifies as two really bad signings, not one. But yeah, that’s one of my least favorite moves: signing a player with a very mediocre career, coming off one good year, to a long-term contract at ages 30 & 31.

It turned out worse than it should have, but IMO, it always figured to turn out badly.

I don’t see how Edward Cabrera would be a logical trade candidate. Former top prospect who’s done pretty well (albiet in a small sample size) so far this season. Why not build around him? A rotation of Alcantara, Perez, and Cabrera is a pretty decent 1-3.

This is interesting fodder, Lopez, Luzardo and Garrett all are rotation ready starters, Sanchez was lights out when he was healthy, Meyer supposedly has the best slider in baseball.

Marlins have to add some offense, be interesting to see what trades come together.

I would love to see the Marlins contend. I feel Miguel Andujar and Estevan Florial would become all-stars in Miami playing everyday. I look at the Yankees as being the perfect trading partner for Miami for years to come. Everson Pereira is probably a year and a half away. He can play anywhere in the outfield, with power and speed. The Marlins can definitely trade a coupe of they’re starters for the offensive players they need. I heard they’re reluctance to do so had a lot with Jeter leaving? Talk to me Fish fans.

Did Ng not learn from the Mets that an ace rotation without an offense is an incomplete team? And that these super-rotations just fall apart?

Excuse me for not clapping like a seal simply for the sake of her gender like I was told to by MLB when they made that hire.

Marlins have a surplus of pitching, and they should tap into that depth for better offensive options. Hopefully they don’t have a down year, pitching-wise, after trading away a pitcher or two, but I feel like it’s a smart idea. Keep Luzardo & Cabrera, as it looks like they are starting to break out, and have more years of control than a guy like Pablo Lopez. Rogers & Hernandez are possible bounce back candidates, so maybe include one of them in a Lopez deal. Neidert, Castano, & Braxton Garrett have been slightly above average. As for Sixto, 2023 is make or break for him, so he could also be included in a trade with Lopez, but would require a very substantial package in return.

I remember reading Angels GM PM asked about Max Meyer this past Winter. The Marlins asked for Adell in return. I’d do it. Even though we wouldn’t have MM until late next year the earliest.

Marlins are one of the worst franchises in professional sports. They’ve been a joke for almost two decades. Even this year, another year where they were supposed to make a step forward, they haven’t. They’re 43-72 against teams that aren’t the league-worst Nationals.

Articles saying they’re ‘open’ to trading whomever could be written constantly. They’re always open to trading any and everyone if it’ll save them a few bucks down the line. No interest in winning or building a fan base or a team.

The Marlins will trade two SPs, and I think will most probably be Pablo and Garrett, with Rogers as a good chance.
However, I still don’t think they should trade Pablo if they want to compete next year, as he is the only one proven reliable arm after Sandy.
None of the Cabrera, Luzardo, Sixto, Rogers have been dependable for an entire season, so trading Pablo will make Castano and Neidert (I think he is ready, though) make at least 10 starts next year.

No thanks. Their xFIP- is 5% below league average and they play in a pitcher friendly ballpark. When you take out the relievers, that xFIP- drops to 6% below league average. Not worth taking on this risk.

All they need to do is make some intelligent free agent signings on offense

Find the Brandon Drurys out there. They’re all over the place

Travis Jankowski would be available for example. You can piece together a good offense from cheap free agents if you know what you’re doing

In one offseason just from minor league contracts and bargain free agents it’s easy to make that team a playoff team

You have to target minor league players that organizations either misevaluated or gave up on

There’s a lot of Justin Turners and Brandon Drurys out there. A lot.

Mets got RA Dickey on a minor league contract. There’s tons of potential above average players you can get from the minor leagues

A lot of players can be good but they were blocked, or they couldn’t get regular at bats, weren’t given a regular starting job, weren’t given enough ABs to really figure out major league pitching

Dominic Smith is a good example. Mets are dying to unload Smith. He could be a very productive gold glove level 1B that you can get cheaply

All Ng has to do is call up the Mets and trade for Dominic Smith. That solves your 1B issue. A potentially very good bat

Mets want to cut ties with him. You could get him very cheap. There’s tons of players like that

Guess who else was a GG level 1B that was acquired for cheap? Anybody could’ve had Christian Walker a couple seasons ago.

Oh, and finding guys that teams undervalue in MiLB to bring into the system? You mean like Stone Garrett? The Marlins were the ones who cut him.

The Marlins are terrible at assigning value to anything other than SP (and hilariously, the DBacks would do the Gallen/Chisholm deal 10/10 times; so they got got there)

BTW, I now know for a fact that you’re a troll (as if it wasn’t already clear enough). Carroll is already a bust yet Dom Smith is a difference maker? You’re a funny guy lol

His plate discipline his horrendous. Poor man’s Joey gallo at best.

Oh no! A Rookie that’s had all of 25 PAs in almost two weeks on the MLB roster has poor plate discipline against MLB pitching? Make sure you call the press with details on that breaking story. While you’ve got them on the phone, you should point out that his AVERAGE exit velocity so far is 99.4 MPH on his 19 BBE. You take the swing-and-miss for that level of power on contact every time (as evidenced by Gallo’s career).

The point wasn’t that Stone Garrett is some world beater; the point was that the Marlins had “undervalued talent” that they let go for absolutely nothing. (It just makes it all the more hilarious that Stone has put up more value in his 25 PAs than “Mr. Smarter Than the Industry”‘s recommendation of Dom Smith has in his entire 1300+ PA career)

By the way, Gallo is a not a good comp at all. You’re comparing a LHH FB-hitter focused on pulling the ball and with a borderline passive approach to a RHH LD-hitter that’s shown more ability to go with the pitch than Gallo has in recent years (if not his whole career) with an aggressive approach to go along with. The list of comparisons begins and ends with them playing COF and hitting the ball hard.

Why are you so upset Camden? Because somebody pointed out tangible reasons for you to question your own intelligence?

By the way, it doesn’t matter whether you’re the same person or not; you’re both “insufferable, unknowledgeable, interchangeable a**hole from Baltimore” as far as I’m concerned lol; which is a shame, because I actually know some really lovely people from Baltimore.

By the way: since I already picked apart your Gallo/Garrett argument (to which you had nothing even resembling a rational refutation), I might as well kick an idiot while they’re down; you’ve misused “your” more times than you actually got it right. Might want to mind your “p”s and “q”s if you’re going to be questioning the intelligence of others 😉

“You don’t see it or understand cause your just not intelligent enough. And Hey that’s okay. Just recognize you belong at the kids table not the adults.”

That reminds me of some of these self-help finance articles, which basically do nothing more than suggest that you cut back on your expenditures. As if that never occurred to the person trying to save money.

Everyone in baseball has a whole department dedicated to trying to find under-appreciated minor leaguers. You mentioned Drury in particular. Between 2018-2021, Drury had a ridiculously bad OPS+ of 67. And Drury had a negative cumulative bWAR of -1.8 over those four years. If you posted in the pre-season, that Drury would have a breakout year at age of 29, that’s great. But usually, the guys that can’t play, continue to not be able to play.

You have 30 teams looking for a needle in the haystack.

Marlins need to know How to put together in a simple way a good offensive team. Exhibit one, I was in favor of signing T Pham for one season, as of today he has been a better player than Avi and Soler. I was for Robertson to be the closer, what a season he had for the cubs. I will not trade Cabrerra, nor Luzardo. I will trade Lopez and Garret if and only if I can bet some one like Moreno, Gabriel Martinez and Gurriel. Need to be smart about trades and selecting free agents. Yes the big Item go after Correa or Arenado. I would rather have Arenado. Need to learn for the best when it come to trades, for me the Rays are very good at this. Trade your second best major leagues already established pitchers and get a good return. As for center field options go get Kiermaier for a season or another free agent. Do not trade future all star pitchers, they do not bring great value yet. I will consider trading Alcantara next season on the August for a surplus and mix of major league ready and prospects if the team does not fulfil expectation. In regard to Alcantara they way they are abusing him sad to say he will be done in 2 or 3 years. It is just irresponsible the way they are abusing his arm. This is my view hope they learn and be better when trading and selecting free agents
