Matt Carpenter Expected To Miss 6-8 Weeks With Foot Fracture

By Anthony Franco | August 10, 2022 at 6:09pm CDT

Aug. 10: Carpenter will not require surgery, tweets Marly Rivera of ESPN. He’ll be reevaluated in a month, with the club hopeful he could be back to action in six-to-eight weeks. That gives Carpenter a shot of returning for the stretch run and/or postseason play.

Aug. 9: The Yankees placed Carpenter on the 10-day injured list today, recalling Miguel Andujar to take his spot on the active roster.

Aug. 8: Yankees utilityman Matt Carpenter fractured his left foot during tonight’s game against the Mariners, the club announced. He fouled a ball off his foot in the third inning and was immediately replaced by Tim Locastro.

The club will provide more specifics and a timetable for his recovery in the coming days. He’ll certainly require an injured list stint, and whether his season is in jeopardy should be known shortly. Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies fractured his foot in mid-June and has yet to embark on a rehab assignment, with the club estimating his recovery in the two-to-three month range. Dodgers outfielder Chris Taylor suffered a less devastating fracture in early July and returned to action over the weekend, missing exactly one month of action. That’s not to say either player offers a definite comparison point for Carpenter. His recovery timeline surely depends on the placement and severity of the fracture.

The injury interrupts what has been one of the more remarkable stories of the 2022 season. A three-time All-Star, Carpenter seemed to be nearing the end of his career after three years of well below-average play to close out his tenure with the Cardinals. The 36-year-old overhauled his swing path over the offseason but was still limited to minor league offers. He signed a non-roster pact with his hometown Rangers, and while he played well in Triple-A, he didn’t have a path to playing time in Texas.

After being granted his release from his minor league deal with the Rangers, Carpenter received an immediate MLB opportunity with the Yankees. Brought on as a bench bat, he’s played his way into an increasingly larger role with an unbelievable bounceback season. Carpenter has connected on 15 home runs in 154 plate appearances, posting an otherworldly .305/.412/.727 line. He’s forced his way into the lineup, with manager Aaron Boone rotating him between designated hitter and all four corner positions.

New York is already without primary DH Giancarlo Stanton, who has been on the shelf for a couple weeks due to Achilles tendinitis. First baseman Anthony Rizzo has dealt with a nagging back issue in recent days, although he’s not required a stint on the injured list to this point.

Oof, that is a very rough break for NYY. Judge has been red hot recently, but to take Carpenter’s bat out of that line-up right now is just massively unlucky.

In the last month the Yankees are 10-17.

It seems opponents have figured out that Judge is on a legendary contract run, so concentrate on shutting down the other players.

They needed Carpenter (and they’re going to miss Montgomery).

That’s the issue with trading for and signing big-bat one-dimensional hitters. It’s easy to be careful with hitters. The big pitchers you simply have to face. Soto has similar stats he had with the Nats. He can hit, but the opposing pitcher can throw 5-6 pitches on the corner of the plate.

When you look at the numbers, it’s not the hitting, moreso the pitching. Looking at the last month, Yankee batters are hitting .257/.375/.459, ranking second among all teams in runs scored, wRC+ (131), and wOBA (.364). Only team to out-do them in all those stats is the Dodgers, so they’ve been the best offense in the AL since July 9th. Pitching on the other hand has a 4.60 ERA, 4.19 FIP, and 1.25 WHIP. The Pirates have allowed 23 fewer earned runs than the Yankees since July 9th, and the Yankees have a HR/9 approaching 1.4.

Had the pleasure of seeing Matt play in person when the Yanks were here in Baltimore recently. And, he came as advertised. Got on base a couple of times including going “yard”.

Per the article, was unaware he overhauled his swing. Wow. Mid 30s and making adjustments. Love that. Also, I noticed at the game, when batting, his relaxed demeanor in the box. Suiting up for the Yanks doesn’t faze him. Great pick up. Hope he recovers soon for youse guys. Cheers!

Cashman clearly has no interest in a speedy lefty-hitting 23 year old with 14 homers, a .281 average and an .846 OPS. at Scranton.

It’s like defending the absurd contract he gave Hicks and justifying why he gave Montgomery away for NOTHING.

Once the GM makes up his mind, he stubbornly refuses to change.

The mystery is why Florial wasn’t traded at the deadline.

I’m sorry that the Carpenter comeback story had to end this way. I’m a Cards fan and I certainly enjoyed watching Carp during his good seasons, but he never could adjust to the defensive shifts in St. Louis and that was annoying to watch as a fan. I know most people won’t like this take, but I think this injury may be a blessing in disguise because the odds say that he was due for a pretty big regression.

Shouldn’t be season ending, but guess sometimes the feet can be a bit tricky. Hopefully he’s able to come back and continue making an impact for the yankees. Really liked him in STL when he was good, but it was difficult to watch him struggle the last couple years. Hopefully he’s back for the postseason and contributing.

tough break, but it was to be expected you can only ride luck for so long with a patchwork no name pitching staff, im more looking forward to Cole pitching in the playoffs again, and getting knocked out.. again, hes done everything they wanted him to except the playoffs, he can never make it deep, its weird, he always looses it in the playoffs, its like he just seems ‘ off’ , and Stanton hurt AGAIN, that is 1 guy that could care less about his team, it was the same with Miami, he signed a huge contract, under-performed and got hurt and paid, judge i love, stanton is the 1 guy that will publicly say he could care less about winning a world series, to him money means more than success, why do you think he always gets hurt at THIS point of the season, like im a red sox fan so ya, but think about Stanton and his injury history, not much of a fluke, is it?

Hi Amanda – While I’m no Yankees fan myself, it’s a huge stretch to say Stanton fakes injuries. He’s a huge guy and very muscular so the start and stop nature of baseball tends to affect these types of players especially in the hotter weather when it’s harder to stay hydrated. Stanton actually did a great job taking care of his body this season (Judge too), but a calf strain or hamstring pull is always just one swing or one stumble out of the batter’s box away from Stanton given his physique and the tightness of his muscles. While his face may not show it, Stanton loves to play baseball and wants to help his team win; he just has a propensity of pulling muscles. It’s smart for him to stay out until healthy; otherwise he could easily tear his calf and require surgery if he comes back too soon. The injury bug has finally caught up to NY but even if they are 100% healthy come the playoffs, I don’t see NY getting past Houston this year. They are just a better overall team; better depth at starters, better bullpen and they tend to rise up to the occasion offensively when needed. The Yankees get too tight and start pressing with their bats; swinging for the fences vs. trying to get base hits and move runners along.

besides, if he was faking injuries, wouldn’t the yanks be suing to get out of his deal?

we already saw it with ellsbury (the trying to void his deal, not him faking injury part), so not like the yanks wouldn’t try to void it (not suggesting stanton is faking any injury, just saying that if he was, the yanks would probably be looking to void his deal).

    hey Dorothy,
its not so much that they are faked, more like how often hes injured and that hes out 3 months at time for a simple sprain, as far as the team, they simply wont go far due to their starting 5, they arent deep past 2 guys, back to stanton,
2021- On May 14, he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left quadriceps muscle. He didnt return till july 30th.
2020- Stanton suffered a hamstring injury in August,[87] and was limited to just 23 games, TOTAL, granted the season was shortened, that was an excellent excuse for him.
    2019-
On April 1, Stanton was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a Grade 1 left biceps strain.[80] On April 22 he received a cortisone injection in his left shoulder that was administered to address a preexisting injury.[81] On May 20, he was optioned to Class-A Advanced Tampa for a rehab assignment.[82] He made his return on June 20 as a right fielder against Tampa Bay Rays.[83] On June 27, he returned to IL with a knee injury, thus missing the London series against Boston Red Sox.[84] He was replaced by fellow outfielder, Mike Tauchman. On August 11, he was transferred to the 60-day injured list and missed the remainder of the season. In 2019 with the Yankees he batted .288/.403/.492 with three home runs in 59 at bats.
So you see, to say hes anything but a very injury prone player isnt logical, he hasnt been productive since he got to the yankees, even as i type this, hes been out injured this season.

You can believe it. The players admitted it. That was the condition for letting them all off the hook — they agreed to testify.

And btw, you’re wrong — Cora did apologize:

‘BOSTON, Massachusetts — Alex Cora, back with the Boston Red Sox after a one-season suspension, apologized Tuesday for the role he played in cheating while a coach for the Houston Astros.

‘Before leading the Red Sox to the 2018 World Series title, Cora, 45, played a key role as bench coach of the eventual World Series champions 2017 Houston Astros in their illegal sign-stealing scheme, according to Major League Baseball.

‘At a news conference Tuesday, Cora said he wasn’t proud of himself.

‘Of his suspension, he said: “I was spending time at home for the wrong reasons. For that I want to apologize. I deserved what happened this year.”’

No im NOT wrong, he simply said he was gone for a year for the wrong reasons, where in that did he say ‘ my team cheated and stole signs’ im sry, but he just doesnt say that sentence, neither did he need to, trust me im NOT defending cora, he has absolutely been a mess this year with the red sox and has shown a complete lack of leadership, he also told peter gammons that he was at peace with what happened and was looking forward to being home with his daughter , that was really the extent of his comments, i remember when reporters asked jose altuve if he had a device under his jersey and he laughed at the reporter, i dont know what player said what, again, i never took it seriously, i didnt really care, i felt/feel bad for aj hinch, and again i dont know why some 2nd rate nobody pitcher started all this. I dont like jessica mendoza( shes the fat girl that used to do sunday night baseball), but even she criticized friars.

You’re in denial and, yes, you are wrong:

‘Cora was the Astros’ bench coach that year, and an M.L.B. investigation found that he was one of the principal architects of a caper to steal signs from live video feeds and relay the information to batters at the plate by banging on a trash can.

‘During Tuesday’s meeting with the news media, Cora apologized a half-dozen times for his role in the scandal.

‘“I’m going to say today, I’m going to say tomorrow, I’m going to say the rest of my life: I’m sorry,” he said’

      nytimes.com/2020/11/10/sports/baseball/alex-cora-r…

I’m not sure I would love or be LOLing anything related to Cora’s rehire post-cheating as a Boston fan because, well, he’s been terrible & is one of the reasons Boston is so bad. It seems…counterintuitive.

However, to your point, I agree…I LOVE Boston’s Cora and hope they extend him!

I like Andujar and sympathize with him, the way he’s been screwed around by the franchise. But the guy who should be coming up is Estevan Florial, another victim of mismanagement. He’s a bona fide center fielder and he’s raking in Triple-A. But, for whatever reason, it’s obvious that he’s never going to get a chance with the Yankees. If they had any sense of fair play, they’d trade both him and Andujar and let them have careers elsewhere.

Fink, did you stay up to watch that tremendous 1-0 pitcher’s duel ??? It’s 2am on the West Coast here and I’m still buzzing from it. Remarkable pitching from both sides. Great defense. One of the best games I have watched in ages. I would not have been irritated if NY had won instead. One of those games that gets decided on the edge of a razor. Kudos to both teams!

You didn’t double-post. This forum’s software is screwed up.

Yes, I stayed up, fool that I am. That was indeed a great display of pitching until Loaisiga spoiled it, but it also may have been the worst display of baserunning ineptitude I’ve ever seen. The Yankees should be mortified at that Little League exhibition. They threw that game away.

Why? He doesn’t need surgery and might make it back this year.

Somebody, perhaps catching director Tanner Swanson, needs to tell Higashioka to quit calling changeups to long ball hitters after they’ve missed on fastballs. That cost today’s game, and it’s not the first time he’s done that with the same results.

Sox weeks gives him a shot at getting in a week to 10 days of games to prepare for the postseason. Eight weeks means he’s enter the postseason totally cold.
