Pirates Claim Jose Godoy, Designate Taylor Davis

By Anthony Franco | August 5, 2022 at 7:31pm CDT

The Pirates have claimed catcher José Godoy off waivers from the Twins, according to announcements from both teams. Pittsburgh designated backstop Taylor Davis for assignment in a corresponding move.

Godoy, 27, appeared in two games with Minnesota this season. The lefty-hitting backstop has otherwise the year at Triple-A St. Paul, hitting .197/.272/.299 through 151 plate appearances. That’s obviously not great output, but he’s a well-regarded receiver. A former Cardinals and Mariners farmhand, he owns a .271/.351/.361 line through parts of ten minor league seasons.

He’ll replace Davis as the #2 catcher behind Jason Delay. The journeyman was selected onto the Bucs’ roster yesterday when Tyler Heineman went on the injured list. Davis, 32, has appeared in parts of four major league seasons but has only 22 games under his belt. He’s spent the season with Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .282/.358/.320 in 35 games.

This time of year is harsh for the journeymen type…I’ve been there, it’s rough…

I think a lot of us average, every day fans would love a detailed story from yourself or someone with a similar background. It can’t be easy and would probably make a better appreciation for the game and all that are involved.

Not sure why they wouldn’t keep Davis as he would know some of the pitchers and this guy does not seem like much of an upgrade.Doing so would also give some hope to the marginal AAAA players which would say that the Pirates would promote from within unless there is a clear upgrade available.

Actually, for those of us who actually follow the team and are not negative they generally have done things in a systematic manner lately. This is an outlier and not a particularly important one at that.

I would guess that he offers better defense.

yes, it’s not important to have a catcher that can actually hit

Agree with TheMan. Not having Taylor Davis and his legendary bat in the lineup is really going to hurt the Pirates playoff chances this year.

Delay has been a nice surprise. He was always considered a good defender, but his bat has been 20x better than anyone would expect.

I am surprised at Delay too but it is an extremely small sample.

Why do the Pirates hate catchers that hit over .200. They seem obsessed with trying to win games 2-1

Because catchers that can hit would cost more than the minimum and Nutting might not make a large enough profit

This makes no sense. I would rather have Taylor davis than Godoy. Pedro Severino would have been better than anything they have so I could see that. Heineman injury must be enough that they think he might be gone most of the year. Think they would have stuck with Davis if it was only a couple weeks. Why don’t they like Severino? Don’t think anyone claimed him and figured he would fall to them anyways.

Read this post. What am I doing with my life? Look at this list of garbage I’m debating here.

Well if it means anything, you could have gone a couple more paragraphs about first basemen and pitchers whom you thought were naturals for the Pirates to grab, but chose not to

Buc- In answer to your philosophical question, maybe with all the crap going on in the world, this country, and in some of our lives, baseball brings back memories of the simpleness of our youth, and,as such,is a real blessing.

Well stated, although it becomes a discipline to only focus on the games themselves or the abilities of the athletes while ignoring salaries that continue to escalate or police reports and legal proceedings. I suppose this is why I continue to be a fan of the Pirates, who are rife with a great many young, talented players. Difficult team to watch at times but at least there’s hope

    I don’t understand this move.

Maybe they’re trying to stock up on catchers to see what they got in spring but really they maybe taking time from others who could be in AAA at the end of the year or in spring… like Davis if his Injury comes back okay.

Pirates have no standout everyday type for at least the first half or so of 2023,

Edny is making a case for a faster track but still will not come out of spring.
