Phillies Sign José Godoy, Beau Burrows To Minor League Deals

The Phillies have signed catcher José Godoy and right-hander Beau Burrows to minor league deals, per the transaction tracker of each player at MLB.com. Godoy is represented by The MAS+ Agency while Burrows is a Frontline client. Phillies Tailgate reported Godoy’s signing a few days ago while philliesbaseballfan.com had Burrows.

Godoy, 29, signed a minor league deal with the Rangers in February but it appears he was released at some point and now has a new deal with the Phillies. The backstop has a small amount of major league experience, with 62 plate appearances in 26 games, suiting up for the Mariners, Twins and Pirates. He hit .123/.194/.140 in that small sample of work.

Naturally, he has a larger and more impressive body of work at the Triple-A level. He has slashed .270/.328/.403 in 741 plate appearances there over five separate seasons. He’s also considered to be a strong defender behind the dish.

The Phils have J.T. Realmuto and Garrett Stubbs sharing the catching duties, but Rafael Marchán missed all of Spring Training due to back problems and hasn’t yet gotten back on the field. The Phil also signed Cam Gallagher and Aramis Garcia to minor league deals this offseason but the former has been placed on the restricted list, per Phillies Tailgate. It’s unclear why Gallagher is unavailable but it seems Godoy will share the catching duties with Garcia at LeHigh Valley for now.

Burrows, 27, has 17 2/3 innings of major league experience with an earned run average of 10.70 in that small sample. He spent last year in Atlanta’s minor league system with a 5.42 ERA in 76 1/3 innings, striking out 22.4% of batters faced while walking 10.6%. He had signed a minor league deal with the Twins a couple of months ago but was recently released.

Rangers Sign Three To Minor League Deals

The Rangers announced the signing of three players to minor league contracts. Left-handers Chasen Shreve and Danny Duffy and catcher José Godoy will be in MLB camp as non-roster invitees. Texas also confirmed their previously reported agreement with DJ Peters, although the outfielder-turned-pitcher did not get an invite to big league Spring Training.

All three of Texas new additions have MLB experience. Of the trio, only Shreve appeared at the big league level a year ago. The 33-year-old split his season between the Tigers and Reds. Initially inked to an offseason minor league pact by Detroit, he made the team out of camp and logged 47 appearances. While his 4.79 ERA over 41 1/3 innings is unspectacular, Shreve struck out a decent 23.3% of opponents against a lower than average 6.7% walk percentage.

Detroit had hoped to drum up trade interest in the veteran reliever. Once the deadline passed without a taker, they released him to give a few more innings to controllable bullpen arms. Shreve latched on with the Reds for three more outings but didn’t carve out a lasting spot in the Cincinnati relief corps. They released him in September.

Shreve has appeared in parts of 10 big league campaigns, suiting up with seven different teams along the way. He’ll go for an eighth in Arlington as he aims for a spot in a bullpen that skews to the right side. Brock Burke is the only southpaw locked into a relief corps that could also include swingman Cody Bradford or rookies Antoine Kelly and Jake Latz. Shreve has held left-handed batters to a fairly modest .222/.295/.403 batting line over the past four seasons. Former Astro Blake Taylor is also in camp as a minor league pickup.

Duffy rejoins the group, marking his second straight season with the Rangers. The longtime Royals starter inked a minor league pact with Texas a year ago. That came on the heels of 18 months wrecked by arm injuries. Duffy suffered a flexor strain midway through the 2021 season. Repeated setbacks necessitated postseason surgery and ultimately cost him all of ’22 as well.

The 35-year-old managed to get back on a mound last June. Assigned to Double-A Frisco, he pitched exclusively out of the bullpen. Duffy turned in a 2.30 ERA over 31 1/3 innings, striking out 28.3% of batters faced. His control was clearly adversely affected by the long layoff, as he walked an untenable 15.2% of hitters at the Double-A level. He issued another eight free passes in 4 1/3 frames of Triple-A work. The Rangers were sufficiently impressed with his form to give him another Spring Training look in hopes that he can dial in the command as he gets further removed from injury. Duffy hasn’t made an MLB appearance since his final start as a Royal on July 16, 2021.

Godoy, 29, is a depth catcher who has 26 games of big league experience. He split that time between the Mariners, Twins and Pirates. The left-handed hitter has a .271/.329/.404 line in parts of four Triple-A campaigns. Godoy spent the ’23 season in the Yankees and Orioles organizations but only made 36 appearances at the top minor league level.

21 Players Elect Free Agency

With the offseason quickly approaching, a number of players elect minor league free agency on a regular basis. Separate from MLB free agents, who reach free agency five days after the World Series by accumulating six years of service time in the big leagues, eligible minor league players can begin electing free agency as soon as the regular season comes to a close. Each of these players were outrighted off of their organization’s 40-man roster at some point during the season and either have been outrighted previously in their career or have the service time necessary to reach free agency since they were not added back to their former club’s rosters. For these players, reaching free agency is the expected outcome, and there will surely be more in the coming weeks. Here at MLBTR, we’ll provide occasional updates as players continue to elect minor league free agency.

Orioles Select Jordan Westburg, Outright Jose Godoy

The Orioles have formally selected the contract of top infield prospect Jordan Westburg from Triple-A Norfolk, per a club announcement. The move was reported to be in the works yesterday afternoon. Baltimore opened a spot on the 40-man roster by passing catcher Jose Godoy through outright waivers. Godoy will remain in Triple-A but no longer occupy a spot on the 40-man roster. Fellow infielder Joey Ortiz was optioned to Norfolk to open a spot on the active 26-man roster for Westburg, who’ll make his MLB debut in tonight’s game.

Westburg, 24, was the No. 30 overall pick in the 2020 draft and has ripped through Triple-A pitching this year, slashing .295/.372/.567 with 18 homers, 15 doubles, a pair of triples and a perfect six-for-six showing in stolen bases. He’s walked in 9.6% of his plate appearances against a 21.3% strikeout rate. Westburg is widely regarded as one of the sport’s 100 best prospects, ranking prominently on lists compiled by Baseball America (No. 41), MLB.com (No. 34) and many others.

Given that pedigree, Westburg will likely be given the opportunity for regular plate appearances. His promotion could cut into the playing time for veteran second baseman Adam Frazier (who’s also capable of playing left field) and slumping shortstop Jorge Mateo. Westburg has primarily been a shortstop in his minor league career, but he’s also logged considerable time at third base and second base, in addition to some brief cameos in the outfield corners.

As for the 28-year-old Godoy, he came to the O’s about three weeks ago in a cash trade with the Yankees. The former Cardinals farmhand has quickly become something of a journeyman, as the O’s are his sixth organization since 2019. He’s appeared in 26 big league games — split between the Mariners, Twins and Pirates — but has just a .123/.194/.140 batting line in a tiny sample of 62 plate appearances. He has a much better .272/.327/.412 batting line in 671 Triple-A plate appearances across parts of four seasons, and Godoy is regarded as a quality defensive option behind the dish as well. He’ll remain with the O’s and serve as a depth option with their top affiliate.

Orioles Select Anthony Bemboom

The Orioles on Tuesday announced that they’ve selected the contract of catcher Anthony Bemboom from Triple-A Norfolk. As was previously reported, the team designated righty Spenser Watkins for assignment in order to open a spot on the roster. Baltimore also announced that catcher Jose Godoy has been optioned to Norfolk, while righty Logan Gillaspie has been recalled in his place. Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com first reported that Bemboom’s contract was being selected back to the 40-man roster.

The 33-year-old Bemboom appeared in two games with the O’s earlier this season received just three plate appearances. He’s a career .158/.233/.268 hitter in 206 Major League plate appearances split between the Rays, Angels and Orioles, though he’s had quite a bit more success than that in Triple-A. That includes so far in 2023, when the journeyman backstop has delivered a .278/.366/.389 slash with a home run and as many walks (nine) as strikeouts in 82 trips to the plate.

Bemboom has typically served as a backup, both in the big leagues and in the upper minors. He’s generally lacking in power but carries a strong 33% caught-stealing rate (22% so far in 2023). Bemboom regularly delivers average or better marks in terms of pitch-framing and in Defensive Runs Saved. Backup catcher James McCann was recently placed on the injured list due to an ankle sprain, and Bemboom will head to the big leagues to back up Adley Rutschman.

The Orioles could have designated Godoy for assignment and kept Watkins as pitching depth, though they perhaps feel Watkins has the better chance at passing through waivers and thus remaining with the organization. They could also have kept Godoy as the backup to Rutschman, though Bemboom has more familiarity with the staff dating back to his time with the O’s last season.

Orioles Make Three Roster Moves

The Orioles placed catcher James McCann on the 10-day injured list due to a left ankle sprain.  This was one of a trio of moves announced by the club, as the O’s also selected the contract of catcher Jose Godoy and designated right-hander Reed Garrett for assignment to create a 40-man roster spot for Godoy’s arrival.

McCann suffered the injury in yesterday’s game while sliding into first base for an infield hit.  The sprain forced McCann to make an early exit, and while it isn’t considered to be a serious injury, the Orioles have opted to place McCann on the IL just to provide him with enough time to fully heal.  Teams only have so much flexibility with catchers with day-to-day types of injuries, especially in Baltimore’s case when Adley Rutschman is already playing basically every day as either a catcher or designated hitter.

Reflecting Rutschman’s workload, Godoy now looks to be the fifth different catcher to get some time behind the plate for the O’s this season.  McCann has seen the bulk of the backup duty, though this is his second IL stint of the season, after he began the year with a brief absence due to a minor oblique strain.  McCann has hit only .194/.232/.344 over an even 100 plate appearances, but as long as he continues his solid defense (including throwing out nine of 16 baserunners attempting to steal) as Rutschman’s understudy, the veteran will retain his backup spot.

Godoy was acquired in a trade with the Yankees earlier this month, and the 28-year-old figures to get his first MLB action of the season while McCann is sidelined.  Godoy has appeared in 26 big league games with the Mariners, Pirates, and Twins since the start of the 2021 season, and he has also bounced around to several other clubs on waiver claims and minor league deals over the last three years.

The Orioles just selected Garrett’s contract earlier this week, and his tenure in Baltimore has thus far consisted of three runs allowed over 2 2/3 innings of relief work.  Garrett signed a minors deal with the O’s in the offseason, and he has posted a 1.59 ERA and a 28.4% strikeout rate in 22 2/3 innings with Triple-A Norfolk.  Garrett has been outrighted before, so if he clears DFA waivers and Baltimore wants to outright him off the 40-man roster, Garrett can opt to decline that assignment and become a free agent.

Orioles Acquire Jose Godoy From Yankees

The Yankees have traded minor league catcher José Godoy to the Orioles, according to an announcement from New York’s Triple-A affiliate. While there were no specifics on the return, transactions of this nature tend to see a nominal amount of cash sent the other way. Godoy is not on the 40-man roster, so no additional move was necessary.

Godoy, 28, signed a minor league deal with New York in late March. He’d spent Spring Training with the Angels but was cut loose before the season started. He suited up 11 times with the Yankees’ Scranton/Wilkes-Barre affiliate, hitting .270/.341/.514 in 41 trips to the plate. He hadn’t played in a game since May 7 and has spent the past few weeks on the development list (typically used to send non-injured players to an organizational complex).

A left-handed hitter, Godoy has 26 MLB games under his belt. He’s divided those among three teams, logging cups of coffee with each of the Mariners, Pirates and Twins. The Venezuela native is a .271/.324/.412 hitter in parts of four Triple-A campaigns.

The Orioles have a pair of Triple-A catchers — Anthony Bemboom and Maverick Handley — on the minor league injured list. Godoy joins Mark Kolozsvary in Norfolk as a healthy non-roster depth option. The Yankees recently optioned Ben Rortvedt to take the majority of their Triple-A catching work.

Yankees, Jose Godoy Agree To Minor League Deal

The Yankees recently signed catcher José Godoy to a minor league contract, according to Baseball America’s Chris Hilburn-Trenkle. The backstop had been released by the Angels earlier this month.

Godoy has appeared in each of the past two MLB seasons. He’s played for three teams, logging brief action with the Mariners, Twins and Pirates. The left-handed hitting backstop has played in 26 games, compiling a .123/.194/.140 line over 62 trips to the plate. He’s a .271/.323/.405 hitter over parts of three Triple-A campaigns. That’s obviously not huge offensive impact, though he’s shown decent bat-to-ball skills in the minors. The bigger selling point is in his solid defensive reputation.

New York was dealt a hit to its catching depth in camp with the revelation that Ben Rortvedt required shoulder surgery. Jose Trevino and Kyle Higashioka are the only healthy catchers on the 40-man roster. Godoy joins Nick Ciuffo as non-roster players with some MLB experience who can head to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as insurance in case Trevino or Higashioka suffer an injury.

Angels Release Jose Godoy

The Angels have released catcher Jose Godoy, per the team. Godoy, 28, was signed to a minor league deal by the Angels earlier this offseason after being outrighted by the Pirates in October.

To this point in his career, Godoy has struggled during his limited time in the majors, as he has slashed just .123/.194/.140 in 26 career games in the majors. He’s spent time as a member of the Cardinals, Mariners, Twins, and Pirates organizations prior to his time in Anaheim, and carries a slash line of .272/.351/.366 over ten seasons as a minor leaguer. Given teams’ constant need for upper-level catching depth in the minor leagues, Godoy should certainly find another organization interested in his services on a new minor league deal.

As for the Angels, this move not only indicates belief in their primary catching options of Max Stassi, Logan O’Hoppe, and Matt Thaiss, who expect to combine for the majority of playing time at the position for the major league club this year, but also non-roster invitees Chad Wallach and Anthony Mulrine, who seem poised to be the depth options for the Halos in the event of an injury. If the club had each of those players ahead of Godoy on the organizational depth chart, today’s move may have been the best outcome for Godoy, who could look to sign on with a team thinner at catcher in order to have a clearer shot at big league playing time this season.

Angels Sign Jose Godoy, Gerardo Reyes, Cam Vieaux To Minor League Deals

The Angels have signed catcher Jose Godoy, right-hander Gerardo Reyes, left-hander Cam Vieaux to minor league contracts, according to MiLB.com’s official transactions page.  All three players were assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Reyes has the most big league experience of the trio, with 29 games and 28 innings pitched across two seasons.  Twenty-six of those innings came with the Padres in 2019, and then Reyes was sidelined by the abbreviated 2020 season and Tommy John surgery early in 2021.  Finally returning to game action last April with the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate, Reyes had a 3.74 ERA over 45 2/3 minor league innings, racking up a lot of whiffs (28% strikeout rate) and unfortunately also a lot of free passes (15.9% walk rate).  The righty also got back to the majors for two appearances with Anaheim.

A hard-thrower with a live fastball, Reyes is still a work in progress as he enters his age-30 season.  He has posted increasingly strong strikeout totals dating back to his time in the Padres’ farm system, though walks have also been a consistent issue, and his 2022 walk rate represented his highest over such an extended sample size of innings.  There isn’t much risk for the Angels in continuing to carry Reyes on a minor league deal, just in case he gets fully on track after a normal offseason and can finally harness his velocity.

After joining the Angels, Godoy has now been part of five different organizations since March, starting with the Mariners and then bouncing to the Giants, Twins, and Pirates on waiver claims.  All these travels resulted in only 10 MLB games for Godoy in 2022, suiting up twice for Minnesota and eight times with Pittsburgh.  With two outright assignments, Godoy had the ability to become a free agent, and he took that option after the season.

Godoy has appeared in 26 total Major League games over two seasons, and the longtime Cardinals farmhand has some respectable numbers in the minors, including a .271/.323/.405 slash line over 605 career Triple-A plate appearances.  The 28-year-old Godoy joins Matt Thaiss and Chad Wallach as catching depth for the Angels behind Logan O’Hoppe and Max Stassi, though there have been some rumblings that Los Angeles might be looking to further upgrade itself behind the plate.  The Angels had some interest in Willson Contreras before he signed with St. Louis, so unless the Halos’ interest was limited to Contreras specifically, they could still aim to bring another catcher into the mix.

Vieaux made his Major League debut in 2022, posting a 10.38 ERA over 8 2/3 innings with the Pirates.  Vieaux qualified for minor league free agency after the season, as Pittsburgh designated and outrighted him twice off its 40-man roster — by coincidence, the Bucs DFA’ed Godoy to create roster space when selecting Vieaux’s contract back in August.

A sixth-round pick for Pittsburgh in the 2016 draft, Vieaux will be changing organizations for the first time in his pro career.  The lefty was a starter for much of his time in the minors but transitioned to relief pitching in 2021, and Vieaux seemed to hit a wall at the Triple-A level.  Things started to click in 2022, as he posted a 3.06 ERA, 23.7% strikeout rate, and 7.6% walk rate over an even 50 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis.  While not huge strikeout numbers for a reliever, Vieaux’s K-rate has ticked upwards since his move to the bullpen, so the 29-year-old might yet be able to reach another gear as he continues to acclimate to relief pitching.
