Twins Claim Austin Davis From Red Sox

By Darragh McDonald | August 31, 2022 at 1:10pm CDT

The Twins have claimed reliever Austin Davis off waivers from the Red Sox, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Davis had been designated for assignment on Sunday.

The 29-year-old left-hander spent some time with the Phillies and Pirates to begin his career. The Red Sox acquired him from the Bucs in a July 2021 trade that sent Michael Chavis to Pittsburgh. After the trade, Davis put up a 4.86 ERA in 16 2/3 innings, along with a 22.7% strikeout rate, 9.3% walk rate and 47.1% ground ball rate. This year, he has a 5.47 ERA through 54 1/3 innings, striking out 24% of batters but walking 11.4% of them.

Boston decided to shake up their struggling bullpen recently, with Davis among those to get the cut. The Twins had an open spot on their 40-man roster and used it to pick him up. Active rosters expand from 26 to 28 tomorrow, which should make it easy for Davis to fit in there. He will join Caleb Thielbar and Jovani Moran as lefty options out of Minnesota’s bullpen. Because he has joined the club’s 40-man roster prior to tonight’s 11:59pm ET postseason eligibility deadline, he will have the chance to earn a spot on the club’s playoff team. That will likely involve him having improved results in his new uniform, in addition to the Twins gaining ground in the Wild Card race, where they are currently three games behind the Blue Jays for the last spot.

He’ll pitch against the Sox tonight and throw three perfect innings and get a save

Looks like Sawamura cleared waivers though and was outrighted to Worcester. He’s got an interesting player/team option where the Sox have a club option over him worth between $3-4 million and Sawamura; if they decline, Sawamura can opt to exercise his player option and return at a lower rate. So there’s a good chance we have seen the last of him in Sox uniform just yet.

They cut the cord with him. It’s over.

Looks like you are right and I am wrong. There’s a newer article that came out on him and it says he still has that option available.

All good! Chris Cotillo of Masslive had written an article on it and I saw it before it was written about here.

Thinking about it more I’m not sure how I came to that conclusion. If he signs a contract and it’s guaranteed.., if they cut him it doesn’t matter. He still has the option as a guarantee as it was written.

The Red Sox would only be off the hook if another team claimed him and accepted the current contract structure. Nobody claimed him so the Red Sox are still responsible and they can’t just negate the deal. Good stuff bro.

Chavis is no superstar, but that trade was sheer idiocy. Another bonehead move by Bloom.

You have a problem with Chavis trade? Really? Where was he going to play, Worcester?

Chavis is a good defensive 1B who hits LHP well. For a team who has Bobby Dalbec, Franchy Cordero, and Eric Hosmer lining up at first base, I can see why he has an issue with it.

BR has him rated as 0.1 WAR and FG has him at -0.2 WAR. His K/W this month is an amazing 25/1. It is what it is. It’s entirely possible that none of these guys are any good.

IMO, the Red Sox will buy out Sawamura’s option. I think it was for $600,000 rather than pay him $3,700,000 (escalators already achieved).
