Yankees Promote Oswald Peraza

By Anthony Franco | September 1, 2022 at 6:22pm CDT

The Yankees have made one of the more notable September call-ups around the league, announcing the promotion of top shortstop prospect Oswald Peraza from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. With active rosters expanding and Peraza already on the 40-man roster, no corresponding move is necessary.

It’s the first big league call for the 22-year-old, who has spent a bit more than six years climbing the minor league ladder. Originally signed by New York out of Venezuela during the 2016-17 international signing period, the 6’0″ infielder spent his first couple seasons in rookie ball. He put himself firmly on the prospect radar by 2019, showing a high-contact approach in Low-A that year. The cancelation of the following minor league season cost Peraza a year of reps, but New York still felt there was a chance another team would take him in the Rule 5 draft and carry him on the MLB roster in 2021.

The Yankees therefore added Peraza to the 40-man roster, and he’s occupied a spot there for the past couple seasons as he’s continued to progress through the system. He mashed in a 28-game stint in High-A to start 2021, earning a quick promotion to Double-A Somerset. Peraza played most of the year there, hitting .294/.348/.466 with 12 home runs and 20 stolen bases through 79 games. That impressive age-21 season earned him a late-season cameo in Triple-A and plenty of public support on Top 100 prospect lists entering this year.

Peraza placed among the game’s top farmhands in preseason rankings at Baseball America, ESPN, The Athletic and FanGraphs. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel was the most bullish, slotting him 25th leaguewide, but evaluators broadly agreed he was a plus defensive shortstop with power potential and bat-to-ball skills. Reports raised questions about his tendency to chase pitches outside the strike zone, but consensus opinion is that he has the physical tools to be an above-average regular.

The right-handed hitter hasn’t done much to change those reviews in 2022. He got off to a slow start in Triple-A but has turned things on of late, and his season line now sits at a solid .258/.329/.440. He’s hit 18 homers and swiped 33 bases on 38 attempts. Peraza’s 8% walk rate and 23.2% strikeout percentage are each pedestrian, but it’s a generally productive showing for a player of his youth and defensive profile. BA slotted him second among Yankees prospects (behind only fellow shortstop Anthony Volpe) and #76 overall on its most recent Top 100 update. McDaniel now has him 36th leaguewide, agreeing that only Volpe is the more promising minor leaguer in the New York system.

Rival teams inquired about Peraza’s availability at the trade deadline, with the Reds and Marlins reportedly looking to include him in respective discussions about Luis Castillo and Pablo López. New York held onto him, though, and he’s now in position to potentially factor into their postseason run. The Yankees are coming off an awful month of August, but they’re still a lock to make the playoffs in some capacity. With a six-game lead over the Rays in the AL East, New York remains a strong favorite for a division title and a top two seed that’d earn them a first-round bye.

What role Peraza will play remains to be seen, but it stands to reason he’ll be in manager Aaron Boone’s starting lineup more often than not. Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson, acquired together in an offseason blockbuster with the Twins, have been the primary left side duo in the Bronx. Kiner-Falefa is hitting only .261/.310/.315 on the season, and he carries a .237/.290/.289 mark dating back to the All-Star Break. He’s gotten mixed reviews from public metrics for his glovework. Defensive Runs Saved has rated Kiner-Falefa 11 runs above average, the fifth-highest mark among shortstops. Statcast, on the other hand, has pegged him as a run below average.

Curtailing Kiner-Falefa’s playing time seems the easiest way to get Peraza into the lineup, but the Yankees could also work him in at the hot corner while giving Donaldson a few more days off. The former MVP has a roughly average .222/.308/.382 line across 441 plate appearances. He’s still drawing unanimous praise from public metrics for his glove, but the Yankees have also given the 36-year-old a fair number of quasi-rest days as a designated hitter.

However he’s deployed, Peraza will have a bit less than five weeks to make a case for a spot on the playoff roster. As a player who was on the 40-man by September 1, he’s automatically postseason-eligible (although even players in an organization but not on the 40-man are often easily added to playoff rosters via petition to the league office). Even if he doesn’t play a key role this postseason, Peraza will get his feet wet against big league arms as he looks to stake a claim to an Opening Day roster spot next year. He’ll have one minor league option year remaining after this season, so the Yankees can send Peraza back to Scranton next season if he doesn’t hit the ground running.

Peraza will be paid at the prorated $700K MLB minimum rate for any time he’s on the big league roster, and he’ll pick up a bit of major league service time. Far too much time has passed for him to accrue a full season of service or even threaten early arbitration eligibility as a Super Two player. He won’t be arb-eligible until after 2025 at the earliest, with his quickest path to free agency coming after 2028. If he’s optioned back to the minors next year, that could push his trajectory further into the future.

It’s also worth noting that Peraza will not reach 60 days of MLB service this season, nor is he likely to tally 130 at-bats and exhaust his rookie eligibility. He’ll technically remain a prospect headed into 2023, a potentially meaningful distinction under the new collective bargaining agreement. Players with less than 60 days of service who appear among two preseason Top 100 lists at Baseball America, ESPN or MLB Pipeline (as Peraza seems likely to do next offseason) can net their team a bonus amateur draft choice based on their early-career finishes in awards voting, so long as their club carries them on the MLB roster for a full service year. If the Yankees break camp with Peraza and he wins a Rookie of the Year or places highly in MVP balloting during his first couple seasons, New York could pick up an extra draft choice down the line.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post first reported Peraza’s promotion before the team announcement.

I’m glad finally. I could complain somewhat about the timing, bringing the kid into the middle of the Yankees in freefall , like putting him on the deck of the titanic. It is going to put a ton of pressure on the kid ,which could’ve been avoided if they brought him up before this disaster has unfolded. But you can’t expect that ,that’s not the cashman Way, wait to the last possible minute when is almost too late.

DR: Assuming you’re handle is the same on PSA, I thought your response to Rorschach44 was right on point. And, even though Cashman is right that the hitters aren’t hitting, Cashman is acquiring hitters that don’t hit in the first place (Gallo, Donaldson, Hicks, IKF, Higgy, Odor, etc, etc).

Agreed. But they’ll probably do what they did with Sanchez. Sign him, and then hope they can trade him or throw him in with another player for a deal elsewhere. That usually backfires for us though, hence Donaldson along with a catcher that has disappeared and third basement playing short, but not too well either

Torres can’t play defense, and apparently that’s a strength for Peraza. Plus Peraza had a rough couple months to start the season deflating his overall numbers, but has turned it on since. But, just the D alone, would have me opt for Peraza over Torres.

Not to mention Torres’ hits come at in opportune times (like last season when 80% of his hits/HRs were against the last place O’s), and his homeostasis is Gallo-like, despite his overall numbers looking somewhat playable.

Take, for instance, last night’s game. How the Yanks can go from man on second (Judge) and no outs, to first and second with two outs is unreal. Why are they letting Torres and Donaldson both swing the bat when only down by one run? And, as we could’ve easily predicted, both struck out with RISP. This is precisely what plagued the Yankees last year.

There is no reason why they couldn’t have done the same with Waldi/Sears and kept Monty. This team would be in much better shape. There’s also the Donaldson debacle. $25M for a defender who can’t hit the ball. That $50M total could’ve gone a long way toward acquiring another player for a position of need.

Clipper that’s the way I would’ve done it too. But of course cashman tried to pull a fast one and unload Sanchez’s contract without costing himself anything, and acquiring the incomparable IKF ,who he had been salivating over for quite a while. And let’s not forget the catcher he acquired, that we have never seen, The guy is so muscle bound he probably should have a career in the wrestling Federation instead.

And instead as I understand it, Minnesota pulled a fast one on us ,and with the money they got from us were able to get Correa. Now correa is not having a great season I grant you, but compared to IKf he looks like Mickey mantle, Both offensively and defensively. These deals alone argue for the departure of cashman, but yet according to reports he’s been resigned unfortunately, so we are doomed for this kind of performance for our team for many years into the future

I don’t quite understand why the Yankees hold onto players for so long and then wind up letting them go once they lose all trade value after they’ve provided nothing for the team the entire time they were on the roster. Such as Sanchez, Frazier, probably Andujar

The problem isn’t that they hold on to guys too long. The problem is they don’t identify which ones they should trade. Frazier, Sanchez, Andujar etc. were incorrectly projected to be part of a championship team. There’s where the problem is.

It seems like they don’t do either. They have opportunities to trade players and they don’t. Andujar and Frazier could’ve been packaged for Gerrit Cole; Torres, Hicks, and a prospect could’ve been packaged for Luis Castillo

No, they aren’t loaded. @Mets698622 is half right. They do have the lowest ranked farm system, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have anyone worth calling up.

They have one top 100 guy O’Hoppe. But a lot of what goes into the rankings is depth, which they definitely lack. But there are plenty of top prospects that fail, and then there’s guys that were never a prospect that become all-stars.

Not loaded but not as grim as Mets guy says. Pipeline had them at 30 because they only had one top-100 prospect though they admitted that Neto and Quero were close to making the list. Depth is slightly above-average but the system’s strengths are AA arms with 2023-24 ETAs and A-ball hitters who are 3-4 years away. AA Rocket City has the best record in the Southern League, and teams would rather their prospects play in a meaningful playoff atmosphere than MLB games that only affect next year’s draft position.

The only legit prospect who could have gotten the call was Davis Daniel but they chose to evaluate Weiss and Aguilar to see if they want to keep them on the 40-man for next year or let them hit minor league free agency. We could see a Silseth or Daniel callup if injuries hit or Weiss struggles.

Twins players this spring strongly hinted at Donaldson being pretty negative in the clubhouse, particularly last season when the team was struggling.
They’ve been much better off with Urshela’s steadiness, although Sanchez’s floundering had negated much of that.

This is exciting for Yankee fans. It’s always interesting to see a top prospect get called up. I’m not a Yankee fan, far from it, but even I’m looking forward to seeing how he does.

I think the pressure on him is overrated. I’m sure they told him awhile ago he’d be a Sept. call-up, and no doubt they’ve told him all he needs to do is play the position. In fact, I think being a Sept, call-up brings less pressure. Had this been a month ago, it might have seemed they needed him to help right the ship. Now he’s just one of probably 60 call-ups throughout MLB.

That is true, cashman signed him for a year with the hope that he would be able to unload him ,so that he wouldn’t let him go for nothing. Turns out it would’ve been better off if they just DFA him for nothing. The fallout from that idiocy has been truly horrendous.

For example as a result stuck with the useless Donaldson contract for yet another year, the awful IKF, and the catcher that we have never seen ,who should be playing for the wrestlers Federation

Pink I agree with you. I think the Yankees thought Higgies defense was better than Sanchez, and if he hit ,it would just be gravy. But as we see he is not a major league player, and his defense is maybe marginally better than Gary’s. And he doesn’t hit a lick either. no I think if they just left Gary alone, and accepted him for what he ,was a around 200 hitter that could hit a few home runs everybody would’ve been better off ,but they always expected him to go back to his almost All-Star season, which proved to be the outlier , Occur during the juice the ball here, leaving Gleyber hit 38 home runs that year, as a result they probably ruined him more in the process.

And we definitely would’ve been better off saving that 25 million that’s going to the useless Donaldson, and spending it on a real short stop for example, and keeping Gio,who has been just as good as Donaldson if not better.

Sanchez’s 98 OPS+ would’ve contributed more than Higgy’s 63 OPS+, and Trevino would still be the starting catcher.

There’s a reasonable argument to be made that Gary’s bad rep with the fans made his departure necessary, so I won’t fault Cashman so much for moving him. But taking on Donaldson’s contract at his age was the wrong way to accomplish Gary’s departure, IMO.

Higgy’s defense is better than Gary’s; and maybe Gary’s production would’ve suffered had he stayed in the Bronx. Done deal now.

I can’t blame Cashman for bringing in Donaldson–while he was in a decline phase, he wasn’t nearly this poor, and IKF is basically the player he was. But I’d prefer to see the kids than trading them away as Cashman did at the trading deadline, This team isn’t championship caliber and bringing in the merely adequate and substantial prospect cost was a mistake. Let the kids play. The team is moribund right now.

Mike, your points are valid, but I think it’s the motive behind the Donaldson move (and others) – it was designed as a cost-savings measure (instead of signing FAs) coupled with an opportunity to “win” a trade by unloading poor performing players. In particular, the cost-savings part is what irritates the fan base.

In a clear championship run year(s) with very clear positional needs to be filled, the Yankees took the bargain-shopper way out: IKF, Hicks, Donaldson, and others. Yet, they’ve been remarkably wasteful in spending too, when adding up all their side projects, reclamations, and deals (like Donaldson). It’s just been poorly managed overall, imho.

You know, the thing about Jeter wasn’t that he was the best shortstop or an offensive force…..it was his baseball mind and clock….you could count on him to do the best for the team……that’s what separated him from more talented players playing which is why Torres needs to go….he’s just too much of a liability that Boone continues to coddle and protect.

Yankee fans, check this out from the MLB article on Monty’s success with the Cardinals:

“Such success from Montgomery has to be shocking to those in the Yankees organization after he didn’t register a win in his final eight starts in pinstripes. The difference with the birds on the bat as opposed to the pinstripes: Montgomery is throwing his fastball 30 percent of the time, as opposed to just 8.5 percent of the time as a Yankee.”

    mlb.com/news/jordan-montgomery-off-to-hot-start-wi…

Sound familiar? This is the same BS that both Happ and Gray went through when traded to the Yankees. Both of them were told to reduce their fastball usage. Happ just blew off those instructions and kept throwing his best pitch; but Gray tried to follow the instructions with disastrous results.

Apparently it doesn’t matter who’s the pitching coach, since Rothschild is long gone. This makes me suspect that the anti-fastball directive comes from Cashman’s analytics department, which is headed by Michael Fishman, whose experience in baseball prior to his hire by Cashman was playing Strat-O-Matic, a baseball board game, from which he graduated to fantasy baseball while working as an insurance actuary.

If the Yankees squander this season, Hal had better have the wherewithal to make an executive decision and jettison most of his front office. Not that I expect him to.

Whether your characterization of the Yankee front office is correct or not Pink, its time for change at multiple levels in Yankee land…..while Ive defended Cash in the pasts, its time for him to go and with him bring in a new team that would vanquish the likes of the Fishmans in Analytics. Too many bad player decisions topped by the Monty as well as the Montas disaster this year, has finally pulled back the curtain for all to see.
Second to go would obviously be Boone, simply because a new GM would like his guy in charge of the team, but obviously Boone can’t separate himself as a manager from his players which leads to constant ill placed support regardless of what your eyes tell you…..plus he isn’t very good at handling a pitching staff.
Bring up the kids, trade the prospects who will never be Grade A ML players, and re-stock the ML roster for competition in the AL East which is a different division today and will be for years to come.

It’s pretty pathetic. They brought peraza up, For what, to ride the bench , while all these other useless players play. We may as well see what he’s got. If they brought him up to have some experience with a major league club, well then they brought him up to the wrong team. This team is playing like a little league team at this point.

I’ve been watching the Yankees for a long time, since the horrible Horace Clark and Jerry Kenny era which is prior even to Steinbrenner. They were pretty bad back then, but this team is even worse if that’s possible never seen anything like it

Mike Kay opined during the game that Boone didn’t start Peraza over IKF because…”Boone didn’t want to sit IKF the day after that error because he would think it’s related.”

Uh, yes, exactly. He should do that and hope IKF thinks it’s related. Perhaps he takes his job up a notch next game? When did showing moral support of a player with subpar play at a key position become more important than winning for a first place team? And if a professional player can’t handle sitting the day after he boots another routine play it’s just too bad. But it’s precisely why the Yankees are where they are with Boone and the players (Hicks, Torres, IKF, Gonzales). Hicks looked fantastic at the plate again, btw….. the guy can’t hit pitches straight down the middle of a 12U pitcher was on the mound.

Final assessment: It’s unfair to lay the blame at Boone’s feet. The reality is that the bargain-bin roster was put together by Cashman to avoid going over the CBT, and therein lies the biggest issue. The fact that half the team are bench players, at their best, and DFAs on a normal day, is what’s killing the offense, and the results are reflecting the talent Cashman put on the roster. He does this every single season and every single season it fails.

Likewise, Anthony Banda pitched terribly. Another bargain FA dropped from multiple teams, instead of bringing up talent from the minors (well, we gave most of that away).

      Diatribe complete –

And the Yankees have gotten themselves into such a deep hole, and have been playing so poorly for so long, some of which was due to miss management of the roster, then now they’re pressing, and has a result are making errors ,getting thrown out on the bases, if they do get a rare hit, and generally playing even worse than they would have to have been. This team is in need of a big time sports psychologist, they really need a whole crew of them. I would apply for the job myself if I lived in New York.

Clip, Boone as we know is not cut out to be a manager. He’s too much of a people pleaser doesn’t do it needs to be done. That’s exactly the correct reason why you should bench IKF. He always does things backwards. He should go back to the booth where he could Be a hypocrite, andspend his time critiquing other managers and other teams ,he certainly can’t manage himself. Unfortunately we are stuck with him, unless he resigns, and why would he give up that massive payday. Cheap Steinbrenner would never fire him ,pay him for doing nothing, and have to hire yet another manager ,unless the next manager works for free. But they really do not need a manager, Cashman’s doing everything from his lofty perch anyway so he could do both jobs.

As a Yankee fan who’s absolutely disgusted since the Monty for Bader trade I hope Baltimore sneaks in the back door and runs through all these teams. They’re young, talented, and fun to watch and as a baseball fan I find myself drifting over to watch them quite often. Same with Atlanta. The Orioles and the Braves are the most fun teams to watch in baseball right now and I would love that World Series.

I would not have claimed Bader off waivers. He isn’t worth a roster spot, let alone a reliable LH starter. This is a clown show. I hope the Yankees miss the playoffs too if it means that Boone gets fired. He sucks. He can’t manage the bullpen, the bench, or the line-up card. Why is Donaldson still getting ABs in the middle of this order? IKF is a third baseman. Donaldson is a third base coach. Gallo was run out of town, but at least he got on base.

I guarantee you Boone does not get fired no matter what.Cheap Steinbrenner would never pay him for three years of doing nothing while he has the higher another manager. Steinbrenner is not Steve Cohen, he’s only interested in cutting corners when it comes to spending money, not spending extra money. He doesn’t care enough because he’s making plenty of money from this, that’s his only interest

Mystery Team, I wouldn’t mind seeing the birds pull it off, but I’d rather see the Mariners finally get into a World Series. The O’s have three championships.

I agree the Monty deal was pathetic, and completely uncalled for. He was a good pitcher for us who’s been even better since he left lol. I guess Kashman doesn’t know the old baseball edge, you can never have enough pitching.
