Fernando Tatis Jr. Undergoes Follow-up Procedure On Wrist

By Steve Adams | October 17, 2022 at 7:19pm CDT

Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. underwent a second procedure on the fractured left wrist which required surgery back in March, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. There was no setback in Tatis’ recovery from the first surgery, per the report. However, given that Tatis is also on the mend from September shoulder surgery, Padres medical staff and multiple specialists agreed that the second procedure, performed last week, could provide greater long-term stability. Padres president of baseball ops A.J. Preller tells Acee that the recovery timetable of this new surgery aligns with that of September’s shoulder operation. Tatis is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Of course, Tatis won’t be a part of the Padres’ Opening Day roster, regardless. His nightmarish 2022 year has included not only three surgeries to address two injuries but also an 80-game PED suspension, which was handed down on Aug. 12. He cited a ringworm medication which, unbeknownst to him contained a banned substance, as the reason for his positive test and did not appeal the punishment.

The exact amount of time Tatis will miss early next season is dependent on the Padres’ performance over the next few weeks, as postseason games count toward the suspension. He was suspended for the final 48 games of the Padres’ regular season and was unpaid during that time.

Tatis, 23, originally injured his wrist during an offseason motorcycle accident that the team didn’t learn of until the lockout lifted. (Teams were barred from communicating with their players in any form during the 99-day lockout.) The shoulder issue, meanwhile, dates back to a pair of subluxations suffered during an otherwise stellar 2021 season — the first on a swing early in the season and second while sliding into second base in July. Despite the pair of shoulder injuries, Tatis not only avoided surgery but recorded a .282/.364/.611 batting line with 42 home runs and 25 steals in 130 games (546 plate appearances).

There are still 12 years remaining on the 14-year, $340MM contract extension Tatis signed following his second season in the Majors. He’ll be paid $7MM in 2023 (minus the prorated portion of that salary for any days still remaining on his suspension). He’s then owed salaries of $11MM in 2024, $20MM in 2025-26, $25MM in 2027-28 and $36MM annually from 2029-36. His contract affords him full no-trade protection through 2028 and limited no-trade protection (to 13 teams of his choosing) thereafter. If not traded in 2029-30, he’d gain 10-and-5 rights heading into the 2031 season and then once again be able to veto any trade.

Wouldn’t it be something if the Padres win the world series and Tatis doesn’t get a ring because of his “treatment” choice for his RINGworm?

This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about. But does any one know for sure that if they did indeed win the World Series, that his suspension would dictate that he’s not allowed to get a ring? I sure would hope so. But either way, even if he was given a ring, he’d know that he didn’t really deserve it since he didn’t do anything to help his team win in the post season. And it would be hilarious if they won it all this year and never win again in the rest of his career. And I actually was a huge fan of his during his first couple seasons until he put this big red flag on the legitimacy of his talent.

Kinda like Juwuan Howard being on the Miami Heat. He played like 30 secs and still got a ring. I’m pretty sure that same year LeBron’s father Greg Oden got a ring for being on the team too. He did nothing to help them win.

Does anyone know what the rules for “ring inclusion” are? If you’ve actively played on team A but get traded at the deadline to team B, but team A wins the WS, I know you get a ring. But, was Tatis ever on the 26-man this season? If not, maybe he won’t get a ring if the Friars win it all.

GiantsPhan, from what I know, it is at the sole discretion of ownership because they order/pay for them. They decide which players and staff get them.

100%. The NY Times did a great article on it in November 2015. The owners decide how much to spend on the ring and outside of coaches and FO personnel, the players vote on who gets the rings.

Trumbo: Here’s another online article for it. It provides details on those personnel who have/may receive a ring. It also verified that the owners & management have the final say over which players get a ring. Essentially anyone who co tributes to the team’s success during that year may receive one, regardless of how much, how little, or their present status.

Frankly, I’ll be happy if either NL team wins over the Yankees or Astros. I guess the only way we find out if the management of the padres has a backbone is if they win the World Series. IMO, if ownership and management wants to keep Nando as motivated as possible to stay clean and help them win more, they would not be giving him a ring to go along with the $330 million they owe him.

Wrong, Stephen Vogt was given a ring by the Braves.

According to Wikipedia (take that for what it’s worth), Wainwright was given a ring in 2011 by the Cardinals It is up to ownership who is given a World Series ring. I highly doubt Wainwright was not given one considering his relationship with the club.

I googled this myself after the Friars beat the Dodgers to advance. He’s contracted with the team I’m fairly certain he would get a ring. Forgot who it was but there was a player that got a WS and he was on the opposing team but because he was with the WS championship team for more than half the season. He still got a ring.

For one reason or another players that aren’t active on a world series championship team their Wikipedia page doesn’t list them as winning regardless of being with the organization at the time the said team won.

Bengie Molina got one in 2010 when the Giants won even though he was on the Rangers because he was with the Giants until July. Melky Cabrera got suspended in 2012, I’m not 100% sure if he got a ring from that title or not, but I bet he did.

HGH is not steroids. It is a PED. It definitely matters what he took. Some are very easy to cover up your usage.

Its almost impossible to cover up Clostebol usage which means if he was trying to juice it would have been the absolute wrong one to use. You are right that it means he is an idiot.

Wonder if he’ll use steroids to recover from it.

Cheaters will always one step ahead of the tests. The fact that players are still getting caught here and there shows that there’s numerous players still using steroids. If the tests were good enough, players wouldn’t even consider risking it. Tatis slipped up, just like Laureano did.. and many others.

The Padres are in the NLCS and they will get Tatis Jr. back to replace Bell and Drury.

And the suspension is reduced by each Padres post-season game. There are 25 games left and the Padres will play between four and fourteen more, leaving a balance for 2023 of 11 to 21.

If the Mets kept an over the hill serial steroid user, what makes you think the Padres would want to cut ties with a 23 year old that is already better than Cano was even at his peak?

@Pads Fans I take your meaning, but Cano put up close to an entire HOF career in just his 8 consecutive peak seasons while Tatis Jr can’t stay healthy and hasn’t played more than 131 games incl his minor league output.

Take Tats’ lone season of that kind (ie Cano’s peak) and multiply it by 8, and only then is he really in the conversation with Cano.

“Already better” is a real stretch. A real stretch.

I always thought he was a little overrated and now I think this contract, even in its incredible length and relative cost effectiveness, will wind up a very expensive albatross.

Baseball is weird in that there seem to be guys who play their best in contract years, or always playing for the big pay day, and as soon as they get it, they disappear, they become perennially injured to the point they might as well not exist and then there are guys who play through massive contracts like nothing has changed and they’re the same guy who earned the deal when they were making relative peanuts.

I think Tatis, Jr. is the kind of player who needs to be playing for the payday and once he got a career-spanning guaranteed deal that’s effectively at market value, he immediately disconnected from baseball.

It’s the Yoenis Cespedes situation except instead of four awkward years it’ll be 14 awkward years.

If he was trying to get back faster to help the team he would have used a steroid that is fast acting and easy to cover up. Instead he used Clostebol which is pretty useless for that purpose and nearly impossible to cover up. Getting caught for clostebol means you are an idiot, not a cheat.

I agree with you. You never notice in the last 15 years some of these fantastic hitting first baseman who were regularly around .330, .340, when they got the big contracts they slipped down to .250? Mark Teixeira, Adrian Gonzalez, etc.

They still prepared the same way, they still approached it the same, but there’s something in the mind that has the sense of urgency or not when those massive checks come in every month.

Fwiw, what you described is about what you’d get if you just rolled the dice. In fact, players play at most a hair better, on average, in their walk years.

Still, guaranteeing a lifetime of riches to a kid seems odd. Even so, the average annual cost to the Padres of Tatis, Jr, is $24m, so if he only shows up in July he’ll probably be nominally worth the money cost. As a Pads fan, though? I wouldn’t want him on my team.

Yes, he made a couple bad decisions as a young man – but he’s still going to out-earn his contract by FAR. About a month into next season, people will be excited by his insane ability again, and this will be a small blip on an outstanding career.

When they choose to acknowledge MLB’s all-time home run king, the all-time hits leader, the player with the most MVPs of all time, and the player with the most Cy Youngs of all time, it’ll be relevant and important again. Until then, it’s just a dusty museum in a remote part of NY built on a mix of baseball history and inconsistent virtue signaling.

I quickly became a big fan of him as well. He’s so exciting to watch. This revelation certainly was a huge disappointment. I’m also willing to move past it all and root for him again, but he’s gotta prove to me now that the aberration was his poor decision. Maybe it was really some ringworm meds, as laughable as it all sounds. But the kid’s gonna have a lot of pressure on himself to prove he’s a legit star now. So it’s all on him. He did this to himself, and if he really was clean the whole time then I guess he really shouldn’t have much to worry about. But it would be sad if his performance wasn’t nearly as good and then he starts using these surgeries as an excuse.

Hard not to be a fan back when he homered off Bauer and covered one eye as he rounded first and went toward second. Too bad he squandered so much fan goodwill. It will take a long time to get it back. But AROD is on tv covering games so Tatis still has a chance to be a megastar, even if it is a tainted history. The issue now is can he stay healthy as much as can he avoid the stupidity.

Instead you try to insult other commenters because they speak the truth Tatis is going to excel because regardless of 2022, he is immensely talented and will be in MLB for more than a decade. He will earn more than $300 million even after losing a few million in 2022 and the first few weeks of 2023.

Considering his career numbers prior to 2022 were .965 OPS and 160 OPS+ with 81 HR in 273 games, its a given that with his talent level that he will be in MVP talk most seasons.

But hey, keep on trying to tell yourself that you don’t care or that what has been said about his talent is not true.

What is true is that you are jealous that he is not on the team you root for. How are those Dodgers doing?

He very well may have “insane ability” but we won’t know how well he can play until we also know he’s not using PEDs anymore. Any play before this has legitimate questions….

Nobody can say when this guy started using, but we know he did use at a very, very young age. If he’s that good, he will be back. But, as we’ve seen with many PED-using star-level players, particularly after injuries…..he may not recover his prior form either. Only time will tell.

He was using PEDs to recover from an injury. There’s no drug you can take that can make you play the way Tatis did for the first 3 years of his career, that’s not how steroids work. There’s absolutely zero reason to think he’d suddenly lose that ability at age 24.

Phnxdark23: I don’t doubt that at all. But I do disagree that PEDs can’t help one play like that. There’s a reason that these already-talented people in all N American sports, Olympics, etc, use PEDs at the risk of their reputation and career. They make athletes faster, stronger, better, and provide faster healing ability as well (for muscular tissue). In reality, “healing faster” is somewhat a misnomer. It really strengthens the muscles around the damage and leads people to believe they are healed – it masks injuries better. It leads to better performance overall.

But, as I said, perhaps he was just using it to heal. Perhaps he was using it for performance. Truth is: we just don’t know. But, the future will show us what type of player he will be….. in time.

We know Tatis never played with PED. He was injured when he tested positive. If you are using clostebol, you get caught. Every time. It stays in your system for a month or more, the O- and N- sulfate metabolites are detectable in the tests MLB uses for 3 times that, and its nearly impossible to mask. He may not recover his prior form based on the two injuries he has had. Look at Bellinger. I am hoping he does. We need more young players like him that are relatable to grow the sport.

Wrestlers that died early can mostly accredit that mostly to all those hits to the head and HGH abuse causing their organs to grow uncontrollably. Most people don’t understand HGH assists the growth of all tissue in the body. Anabolic and androgenic steroids do not promote tissue/organ growth

TJT: BUT, steroids promote cellular growth. And that’s deadly as well (consider its effect on prostate growth and disease, among others). Steroids can also fry certain organs, such as kidneys, and promote growth of muscles, like the heart muscle, which is also deadly.

Essentially, any hormone people introduce into their bodies, in addition to what the human body naturally makes & regulates, are taking a risk. Why? Because nobody knows how their bodies will respond to using…until it’s too late.

Steroids also can negatively affect one’s mind, creating issues such as paranoia, emotional instability, etc.

I have a family member who was a professional power lifter. He used steroids and experienced some of the side effects. Unfortunately, the human body’s response to artificially increased hormones is completely unpredictable.

More than half of the 30 MLB teams would agree to assume Tatis and his contract and would be more than willing to include a few small pieces in return.

Tatis remains a risk due to his attitude and judgment, but the contract is a reasonable risk.

I’m pretty sure the Padres first order of business this offseason will be to try and have Tatis’s contract renogiated like the Mets did with Cespedes, which in my opinion is completely warranted due to injuring himself in a dirt bike accident then trying to cover up his injury by not getting it treated and allowing his broken wrist to heal improperly.

It was a ridiculous contact from the moment it was signed. The dude is flat out injury prone, worse than Strasburg, and to sign him to a 340mil contact after one season in which he missed half the season due to an injury was the most fiscally irresponsible signing I’ve ever seen. They had him for nothing for 6 years and could offer him an absurd contract after year 5 or 6 if his health and play warranted it.

I know the 340mil is a drop in the bucket to the Padres wealthy owners but it skews the teams ability to resign Soto or sign other great players.

Jose Canseco is the real guy to blame. He should’ve never invited Nando to his steroid party.

I’m sure there’s some HGH fungal ointment to help the healing process.

Padres should win the WS and show one of the rings to Tatis and say “oh sorry, you already have one”.

Its interesting that even though he is injured and can’t play, each game the Padres play counts toward his suspension, even playoff games.

The deeper in the postseason the Padres go, the more games in the 2023 regular season that come off Tatis’ suspension. As of today he will be eligible to come off his suspension in late-April. I believe he will have served 59 games of his suspension by the end of the NLCS if its a sweep one way or the other. That means he would be available April 21st in Arizona.

It’s a little weird, ain’t it? He may not get a ring but he’ll be back mid-April now. Win win for Pads

The players vote on who gets rings and playoff shares. He could very well get a ring.

Thanks. Yeah, I wasn’t sure how that works in such a unique case as this.

The fact that Tatis didn’t play in a single game this year definitely hurts his chances Koamalu.

It is easy to be a man when you are getting $300 million. One way for him to be a man is to decline the ring and say “I want to earn one myself”. Tatis can do that and still keep his paycheck but get a little goodwill after having screwed up so much.

He might earn a smidge of goodwill if he turns it down himself..

Embarrassment to his teammates and MLB. Not a positive role model for kids at all. His show boating and arrogance is a huge turn off and the Padres should offload him the first chance they get. He’s not worth the hype. Padres are doing just fine without him.
