Giants Not Currently Considering Chris Bassitt

By Mark Polishuk | December 11, 2022 at 3:08pm CDT

TODAY: Bassitt isn’t currently in the Giants’ plans, as Slusser tweets that a pursuit of the right-hander is “not in the cards at the moment.”

DECEMBER 10: The Giants “appear to have interest in” free agent right-hander Chris Bassitt, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.  Checking in on Bassitt would track with the Giants’ general interest in starting pitching this winter, as they have also been linked to Carlos Rodon, Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, and Shintaro Fujinami this winter, and plus Andrew Heaney before Heaney with the Rangers.

There haven’t been too many rumblings on Bassitt to date, though he entered the offseason as one of the top pitching options on the market.  MLBTR rated Bassitt as the fifth-best starter available this winter (and 13th overall on our Top 50 Free Agents list), and of the four pitchers placed ahead of Bassitt, only Rodon and Senga remain, while Jacob deGrom signed with the Rangers and Justin Verlander joined the Mets.

In signing Verlander and Jose Quintana, the Mets have already found rotation replacements for deGrom and Taijuan Walker.  Bassitt and the Mets had some mutual interest in a reunion before the offseason began, and given how aggressive New York has been in adding free agents and building payroll, it wouldn’t count as a surprise if the team splurged again to bring Bassitt back to Queens.

That said, recent reports suggest that the Mets don’t have interest in giving Bassitt anything more than three guaranteed years, and the right-hander is still looking for at least a four-year contract.  Bassitt’s desire for such a lengthy commitment might also be a reason why the pitching-needy Blue Jays have only limited interest for now.  The qualifying offer is also surely a factor, as Bassitt rejected the Mets’ QO, and thus any team who signs the righty will have to give up draft compensation.

The Mets and Blue Jays have been the only teams known to have any interest in Bassitt, but it’s probably fair to guess that several other teams in need of pitching have at least made some calls to Bassitt’s reps at Meister Sports Management.  After all, Bassitt did post a 3.42 ERA/3.75 SIERA over 181 2/3 innings with New York last season, with an above-average 6.6% walk rate, a career-best 48.8% grounder rate, and excellent hard-contact numbers.

With top-ten finishes in AL Cy Young Award voting as a member of the Athletics in 2020-21, Bassitt is also from a one-year wonder, and he still projects as a solid starter heading into his age-34 season.  Just based on age alone, however, teams may be a little wary of going beyond a three-year deal, especially a Giants team that has traditionally looked to sign players (especially pitchers) to shorter-term contracts.  Under president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, San Francisco has yet to sign a player to a deal beyond three years.

That said, the Giants did make a concerted effort to sign Aaron Judge this winter, and naturally that contract would’ve gone well beyond three years.  Judge and Bassitt represent very different free agents, yet if San Francisco is getting more aggressive in its pursuits this offseason, it is possible the club might be willing to consider a four-year deal if it’ll clinch a Bassitt signing.

With Logan Webb as the ace, Bassitt could slide into the No. 2 starter role, ahead of Alex Cobb, Alex Wood, and Anthony DeSclafani.  Adding another starter would allow the Giants to move Jakob Junis back into the preferred role of swingman, and Bassitt in particular would bring durability.  DeSclafani is a bit of a wild card after spending much of the 2022 season on the injured list, and Wood also has a long injury history.  Signing Bassitt would probably take San Francisco out of the running for Rodon, but since Rodon also turned down a qualifying offer, the Giants would get a compensatory pick back if Rodon signed elsewhere, somewhat offsetting the penalty they’d incur for signing Bassitt.

My take is their interest will make Bassitt more expensive for all other interested teams, and then some other team not named the Giants will sign him.

Maybe this is a brilliant strategy on the part of the Giants. Inflate salaries this year so they clear the market of other teams for their bid for Ohtani next year!

      I’m not serious. Most likely.

All the contenders are in on Rodon, Bassitt, and Eovaldi,. Bassitt seems to be the one that posts the most. For that reason i would take him over the others. Hele will cost less than Rodon, and seems to stay healthier than both Eovaldi and Rodon. The other two best him in upside.

Occam’s Razor would suggest a much simpler take: No one wants play on a mediocre Giants team, which is why they are signing elsewhere.

Occam’s Razor would suggest the Giants are going down the trade route given the nonsensical contracts being dished out to free agents. Or they are signing Boras guys who almost always sign late.

Zaidi will find a way to miss out on signing Bassitt. Zaidi’s excuse will be “Bassitt chose another option because was offered a 4-year deal.”

Don’t forget the ever so popular, but they offered a higher AAV..lol

It seems like alot of GMs feel the need to make their larger offers public when they lose out on a free agent, and he chose something less..

I imagine this is to appease their fanbase, but it really only makes them look bad..

Correct. Every time it’s reported the Giants have interest in a FA, the player usually signs with another team in less than 24 hours. Zaidi: “We tried. Idk what happened.”

Right. This off season has been a freaking joke by the Giants front office. I now think they have no intention of signing a big free agent. They act like it, but that’s just to tell us fans they tried. Why didn’t they offer more to Judge & Nimmo once NY matched our first offer?

DTD/ATL1313 — When will this ever end? Oracle is NOT a pitcher’s park anymore. Moving the fences has made it “neutral” by all measures and the Giants were 7th in offense last year in all of MLB.

HOWEVER, as much as Bassitt is a good (not great pitcher) who can eat up innings, he is perhaps the slowest pitcher to the plate of any MLB hurler. With the new rules for 2023, his mechanics may be badly messed up. What’s more, his slow, slow delivery makes infielders cringe. I think either Rodon or Senga make more sense for the Giants.

Pete, I didn’t know that about his delivery. I wonder if that why the Yankees aren’t connected to him at all. It makes sense given their analytics-heavy evaluations of pitchers.

Bassit is a 3# starter. He will give you 6 innings with 2 or 3 runs allowed. He rarely has a real bad outing. Who cares how slow he is to the plate. Problem is mediocre pitchers are being paid way too much lately so he will cost a team like a 4/80 contract.

The reason “who cares about how slow he is to the plate,” is because he’s really, really slow. And with the new rules, he will need to be a completely different pitcher or at least have a completely different approach, which could easily mess up his mechanics.

RobM: I would’ve said BS, except, Senga really has me pondering this. Why were the Yankees not in on this guy? It makes no sense. The interest was there from the beginning; they need another SP; he’s willing to play in NY; he’s far cheaper than Rodon. The only other reason is if Rodon is *their guy* and they’re willing to pay the premium.

But it’s so counter to how they’ve operated for the past decade or so, except for Judge and Cole. It may very well be my friend, but I hope not.

Unless they’ve decided Rodon is their guy. Or, collusion!

I don’t think it’s true, but it has been odd that both teams have stayed clear of either each others players or their targets. Supposedly the Yankees kicked the tires on Nimmo, and the Mets kicked the tires on Taillon, but that clearly was just a smokescreen to cover the obvious handshake agreement.

Once again, just kidding, but it has been curious.

You seem to like to throw out numbers with nothing to back them up. San Fran was 18th in park factor. Last I checked, that means it’s more beneficial to pitchers than hitters. That really bad part is 4 other people thought you knew what you were talking about.

Look at the numbers. Oracle is tied for 10th with Pit., Mil., Atl.,and Wsh. with a park factor of 100 (neutral). Better for hitting than 15 other parks.

If you’re looking at data that includes anything pre=2020, when they made changes to the park, then you’re looking at bad data.

Bassitt is middle of the pack in StatCast pitch tempo. baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/pitch-tempo I don’t see why he would have any issues with the new pitch clock.

A few guys like Kenley Jansen and Devin Williams will be severely impacted.

Okay, that makes sense, leftfield. I have heard those guys were concerns for many pundits but I didn’t realize Bassitt was slow.

Nevertheless, it’ll be interesting to see what effect, if any, this has on players. I have a feeling it may negatively impact more hitters than pitchers though.

outinleftfield, I’m less concerned with him adjusting to the clock, than I am how he handles the running game. Over his career only 16 guys have been caught stealing out of 56 attempts against him. That suggests he isn’t real quick to the plate. I understand that’s partly on who’s catching, but it appears he’s not doing that catcher any favors. With the pitch clock, in addition to limiting throw overs, I can see other teams running on Bassitt.

I’m fairness, there’s no way for us to truly know who or who can’t handle the adjustment. They have plenty of notice and plenty of time to practice and train for the adjustment. But it’s definitely worth pointing out pitchers who have to make an adjustment. So I’m not taking away from your point either.

I think anyone (hitter or pitcher) who has to make a major adjustment to their routine will be impacted for at least the first couple of months. Part of their performance is comfort and timing, so even with prep time, I can’t see how it will be a smooth transition for everyone.

You’re assuming that no pitcher, since they’re all pros, is going to have any problems adjusting to the pitch clock. Doubtful.

Plus, it isn’t just the pitch clock. With throw overs limited there will be a lot more steal attempts. A pitcher slow to the plate is going to have problems with the running game.

Bassitt isn’t an ace, but he’s a big leaguer that will give you a quality start consistently. You’ve got to start filling the holes. If they want to hold off next year for Shohei, that’s fine too 😉

Not so. Yanks are stacked with great SS prospects (Peraza, Volpe and Cabrera). I wouldn’t rule our Rodon, but I think he’s going elsewhere(maybe even the Giants).

Prospects, not proven elite MLB shortstops. Signing Correa allows them to trade those prospects for proven starting pitching.

What would it take to get Dylan Cease? Volpe/Peraza, Dominguez and Gil? How good are the Yankees with Correa at SS and Cease behind Cole in that rotation? Scary good.

How about Pablo Lopez. Maybe just Volpe/Peraza and Gil for him? Stabilizes the middle of that rotation.

We’ve already got the second highest payroll thanks to the winter signings so far. It’s about time we ignored the luxury tax and went big. That’s the only way we’ll be able to complete the roster.

Not only that, but it helps the smaller markets when we blow past the CBT because they get extra money. It multiplies when the Yanks advance tiers so they’re actually rooting for it!

Everything changed for the Yanks since resigning Judge, they are totally in now. They will continue to sign the top players. Yanks make over 800 million a year, they will continue to go over this year, and could still be under next year. Spotrac has them at 161 million next year right now, that means they can still spend at least 50 million withour going over next year. Teams have a five year plan, and contenders will go over one year and under the next.

@Forever: Rodon yes, Correa no. Yanks have their prospects – two of them do handle the spot. I believe Correa will wind up in SF. Rodon is the nice left handed compliment to Cole, who BTW can opt out in two years.

O’s made great stides this year, but I’m not sure they have any star players other than Rutshman. They might take a step backward next year, althouogh i do think they are better than the Sox. Forget about Ohtani, he is only going to a contender that meets his criteria. The O’s don’t make the cut.

Yes, a decision on Bauer is coming soon. If the ruling comes in favor of the Dodgers and they are free and clear of owing Bauer anything, I’d expect the Dodgers to do all they can to stay below the CBT tax line this season and then go all in for Ohtani next offseason in free agency. Paying a 20% tax to bring Ohtani onboard is much better than having to pay between 50% – 70% in CBT overage taxes as 3+ year offenders.

The SF Bridemaids strike again!!! I thought we had it bad here in Boston, but the lack of signings by SF makes me feel a lot better. I do like the Haniger signing and wish he signed with Boston over the Japanese lead off hitter Boston overpaid for, but at least Boston has made some major improvements to their bullpen and are still trying to add more talent to the team even though they lost Xander to the NL West.

SF seems to be sitting idly on the sidelines while all of the top free agents sign elsewhere. I thought they had a ton of money come off the books and were going to be big players in free agency this offseason? All they can hope for now is that Rodon chooses to stay in SF but I don’t see Zaidi / ownership committing to a 6-7 year deal for him. They are well behind SD and the Dodgers right now and if they are not careful, Arizona could soon leapfrog them in the NL West. They should go all in to sign both Rodon & Correa if they want to stay relevant in 2023.

In order for SF to make a wild card spot they will need to post a better win loss record than the following teams :

          SD
          ATL
          NY
          PHL

2 of the aforementioned teams will win their respective divisions and the other three project for wild card spots …..and this doesn’t include the NL Central teams. Because, Well there is no need to

@ Agnes – I’m just trying to tell it like it is. Right now, the Red Sox are still a 4th or 5th place team in the AL East too, but I am hopeful that 2-3 more signings will get them out of the cellar with a ceiling of a wild card team if they stay healthy with a few career years sprinkled in and a few rookies called up from the farm system.

I like the Giants; what Kapler did with that team in 2021 was amazing! All we’ve been hearing on the east coast about the Giants is “wait until 2023 when all their bad contracts are off the books” and then the Giants would become big spenders again. Well we’re here now and the Giants haven’t done much at all to date. I’d be very disappointed if I was a full time Giants fan. There are similarities between SF & BOS, namely the shift in philosophies with their recent GM hirings. Both teams went from almost reckless spenders to extreme frugality with the hopes they could develop young talent and promote within. Both Bloom and Zaidi have failed in their efforts to date. Sure, the Giants won 108 games in 2021 and the Sox were two games away from the World Series in 2021 as well, but we knew that was an anomaly and neither team has yet to build a core foundation of young players to build off of. IMO, if both teams don’t improve significantly this year, both GMs are going to be fired.

Yup true that buddy. I think other signings like bogarts and Turner are making Judges look much better at this point. Last couple years they haven’t been filling the seats like they have before and they need a AS/MVP type talent to help with the ticket sells and Merch sells. Signing Hainger while loosing Rodon and belt isn’t much of a upgrade. If they were smart they would sign Bassit, Correa, Drury and a decent reliever. Maybe sign Brantley on a 1 yr deal also. They have some options but if they keep stalling pencil in a garbage team next year. Patience is running thin the way the Giants have been the past few years. Seems like they don’t care and are being like the As or pirates, signing bare minimum and dumpster diving. This year was probably one of the best FA years and they didn’t capitalize on the chance to be better. There farm is weak too so it’s looking rough for Giants right now

Money does not buy championships in the last 10 years

Giancarlo Stanton hit 59 home runs for Miami and then signed a big contract with the Yankees.
In the 1st 5 years of the contract he played 2 full seasons. 2 straight seasons he barely played and last year he played in 110 games.
Last 10 years Yankees = 0 World Series championships

Dodgers = 1 World Series championship in a shortened season

    One each for the following:
    Braves
    Nationals
    Cubs
    Royals
    Giants

Two in the last 10 years:
    Red Sox
Astros (one could argue they won only one in a sportsmanship way)

    Points:
Red Soxs have the most with 2

You have 7 other teams which have won in the last 10 years

You have no dynasties during this period

One common theme of winning a championship is players playing a long time with each other and playing for the team’s goals.

The Yankees, Dodgers and other teams have tried to buy championships with negative financial results

Teams are paying big money for past results. For example Stanton will never match the numbers he put up with Miami

With all due respect to Aaron Judge the Giants will be better off spreading the money around to develop a team

Pitchers = 28 years and older = 4 years max contract
Position players = 28 years older = 5 years max contract

Really good older players , 35 and up = 1 or 2 years max

Spend more time developing your young players or trade for young players

Rather have 25 solid players versus 1-3 players who are making huge money and are underperforming.

Each team must judge their own free agents objectively which is hard to do.

Hard for small market teams to win though they can if they develop a group of players together like the Royals did

The Giants won 3 in 5 years with a core group of players home grown

Right now the owners are overpaying and are in a frenzy.

The Padres now have 5 current and former shortstops in the lineup. Where are they going to play Tatis and will they all buy into the team concept?

I hope so… I used to be a big fan, and his 2020 was viewed as a “failure” by many, which is crazy considering his numbers were actually very good when healthy. Let’s hope!

Ma, gauging the amount of people I have heard attribute Bellingers offensive woes almost exclusively to his shoulder injury 2 years ago, I would think a lot of people are giving Rendon the same benefit of the doubt. He had lingering injuries all over the place but apparently he is fit as a fiddle now. We shall see soon. We’ll be able to tell come spring training if he is back to his slugging self…

4 is more than 3. Arte won’t sign a pitcher to a contract longer than 3 years. Then last one that was more was a decade ago. Weaver and Wilson for 5 years each IIRC.

Why make it personal? It’s not Farhan. It’s the team and minor league prospects he and his FO has put together.

Who wants to get stuck there on a long term contract if they can get anything approximating it with a decent team that won’t be fighting to stay over .500 for the foreseeable future?

The Giants front office and ownership could not have handled this off-season worse than they already have.

From a public relations standpoint, the fans are beyond pissed.

      Central Valley;

      The fans are illogical. They live in a fantasy world. They think the Giants are a great team and the city is one of the best in the world;
so ballplayers are holding off their agents from accepting a bid elsewhere hoping the Giants call.

The Giants were a great team and organization 8-10 years ago. The city is a mess – the government has to hire workers that dress up like some science fiction scientists in a lab to go out and clean up human excrement from city streets. Maybe that’s acceptable to people living there, but most of those players have wives and children and I don’t care if they live in the suburbs…most wives and mothers I know don’t want their children raised in that sort of environment.

I live here, yes there are homeless encampments on a few streets but not any worse than any big city. Most of the city is just fine. So tired of this narrative being rehashed daily.

Zaidi (and Kapler) must really want to be fired. They have destroyed any hope of the Giants competing in 2023. The only competing will be with Colorado for last place in NL West.

Maybe Zaidi’s strategy is for the Giants to have the worse record in baseball next season in hopes of getting #1 Draft pick. ZAIDI’S WAY OF 2023 TANKING!

Exactly right my dude. Mitch isn’t going to make a difference especially if belt and Longoria leaves. And if Rodon isn’t replaced with anything equivalent pencil in a 10 game under team in 23. Think I’m looking for a new team to follow if they don’t do anything different. prob look at my fav coach Bochy and hope he wins it. Done with these trash can divers they have become

The article should be updated to say “it would count as a surprise if the team splurged again to bring Bassitt back to Queens” since the Mets just signed Senga. Bassitt may need to lower his expectations to three years because teams often lower their offers when a QO is involved.

What is Zaidi thinking? So far Zaidi’s lost out on every FA (except Haniger) he’s pursued. Now Zaidi’s getting picky about an arm (Bassitt) for the rotation. Zaidi (and Kapler) definitely need to be fired!

Susan Slusser reports that while the Giants may appear to have had interest in Bassitt at a previous moment in time, at this moment they appear to have no interest in plans that involve Bassitt until such time as their interest may appear to be resuming.

I cannot figure out what the Giants are doing. Freaking Zaihidi (sp?) is awful! They couldn’t land Stanton, Harper, or Judge. They haven’t signed any significant free agent in years, and the last two they did sign were Cueto and Samardzija (sp?) who they way overpaid for. They should resign Rodin and at this point Correa, but now they will have to overpay or lose out. They should have taken that Judge money and jumped on a few guys early, now they won’t have a team again next year.

The Giants POBO is Farhan Zaidi. Freaking Zaihidi is the one who signed Arson Judge.

I’ll argue that the Cueto signing was a good one at the time it was made. His needing TJ hurt. Samardzija at 5/90 wasn’t bad either for a #3.

You know a lot is said about free agents not coming to SF because they won’t win, but I bet it’s even simpler than that, you want to have your coworkers to be on somewhat the same professional level as you. If you’re going to be hanging with these people on close quarters so much you don’t want them to be where you were 10 years ago.

      luvochka;

I wrote the same thing here 4-5 days ago when the Giants were supposedly in it for Judge and Nimmo.

I said imagine those 2 standing in the OF during a game, looking around at their teammates that are a bunch of utility players and are in the lineup that day because analytics says they might play well against the opposing pitcher. And their pitching staff has a few decent starters, a very good closer and maybe a few set-up guys. Judge and Nimmo would be standing there and wondering if this was where they’d be playing for the next 5-plus years.

So some kid comes on and said I was suffering a stroke, and last I saw 30 people liked his post.

If these are Giants fans and this is the way they view the reality of MLB players and team building, then Giants fans are going to be disappointed for a long time to come. You need a new FO and FO head, a new manager, new coaches, and possibly a new owner. I understand being a homer and heaven knows I’ve lived through rooting for some bad teams in my life, but I know a bad situation when I see it and I’d tend to believe so do free agent players. Any FA that comes in to get the big bucks because no one else will give them to him is a guy not worth having.

Try drafting some good prospects, hiring good coaches for the farm system and teach the players fundamental disciplined baseball. Trying to short-cut that with analytics doesn’t work.

P.S. I know what I’m talking about and I don’t like being insulted by immature kids that know nothing realistic about how to play the game of baseball or administer it on the MLB level.

I have been unimpressed with Farhan for a few years now including 2021. Over 200 moves in his first 2 offseasons and the best player he found was Gausman who he let walk. His drafts look bad especially his first rd picks including $12 million for Will Wilson! His biggest FA bat until Haniger was La Stella who has been awful. Anyone can run a team as if it were a fantasy baseball waiver wire junk yard and what has he actually built? This team isn’t entertaining enough to even pay attention to on TV anymore. Candlestick 2.0 crowds are coming.

That 2020 COVID shortened draft is looking very good. Based off how many drafted minor leaguers were poached from the Giants from the 2019 class, other teams seem bullish on the depth of the Giant’s system.

Don’t be surprised if the Mets double back on Bassitt once he comes down off the 4 year idea. They probably have an offer out there for him for 3 yes, million out there for him to chew on. Then they can either use a 6 man rotation, or trade Cookie for a bat. Being a Met fan I’d like Bassit back on the hill. He was a solid guy last year.
