Blue Jays Notes: Senga, Bassitt, Taillon, Reyes, Brantley, Gallo

By Mark Polishuk | December 6, 2022 at 2:47pm CDT

The Blue Jays are exploring several roster upgrades, with Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reporting that the club has interest in such players as Kodai Senga, Jameson Taillon, Alex Reyes, and Michael Brantley.  “There doesn’t appear to be traction…at the moment” between the Jays and Chris Bassitt, though the right-hander is another free agent hurler at least under consideration for the team.

Starting pitching is Toronto’s clearest need, and as one agent told Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, the Blue Jays are “all over the pitching market” right now.  To this end, it is fair to speculate that the Jays have at least checked in on basically every available arm, which has been the team’s strategy for the previous three offseasons.  Davidi adds that the Jays also “have some degree of interest” in Carlos Rodon, Nathan Eovaldi, and their own incumbent free agent in Ross Stripling.  Past reports have indicated that the Jays have extended an offer to Andrew Heaney, and they were interested in Kyle Gibson (before Gibson rejected Toronto’s one-year, $10MM offer to sign an identical deal with the Orioles), and even Justin Verlander, before Verlander joined the Mets.

Alek Manoah and Kevin Gausman have solidified the front end of the Blue Jays’ rotation, but there is a lot of uncertainty afterwards, given how Jose Berrios and especially Yusei Kikuchi struggled in 2022.  There isn’t necessarily a guarantee that Kikuchi will even get a clear shot at a starting role, since he could at best be competing with Mitch White for the fifth starter’s job, or perhaps even be relegated to the bullpen if the Jays end up acquiring two new starters this winter.

As noted by both Nicholson-Smith and Davidi, the fact that the Jays were considering getting into Verlander’s market (even on a short-term deal) is another sign of how aggressive the team is willing to be, and perhaps a sign of how far they’ll stretch the payroll.  Bigger spending may be somewhat inevitable given the rising costs involved in the pitching market this offseason, though it might be a reach to see the Blue Jays spend what it will take to sign Rodon or perhaps even Senga, considering how the Japanese ace is drawing a lot of attention from multiple teams.  Speculatively, the Jays’ relative lack of interest in Bassitt could have to do with Bassitt’s desire for at least four guaranteed years, which may be a tall order for a pitcher heading into his age-34 season.

Reyes represents another kind of pitching addition, as the former top prospect is an intriguing bounce-back candidate who would fit on a lot of teams.  That said, Reyes also carries plenty of risk given his long injury history, including a shoulder surgery that kept him from pitching whatsoever in 2022.  It will be interesting to see how Reyes’ market materializes, as the Blue Jays and other teams will naturally be weighing the injury concerns, but the sheer amount of interest could still lead to a decent payday for the right-hander.

Beyond the pitching market, the Jays are also looking for left-handed hitting outfielders.  A gap in the outfield emerged after Toronto dealt Teoscar Hernandez to the Mariners, and a lefty swinger could help add balance to a largely right-handed Blue Jays lineup.  Brantley is one possibility, and while he is a player the Jays reportedly came very close to signing in the 2020-21 offseason, health questions also surround Brantley’s market.  Shoulder problems that eventually required surgery limited Brantley to only 64 games last season, and he has missed a lot of time earlier in his career with other injury woes.

Such names as Brandon Nimmo and Cody Bellinger have also been linked to the Jays’ outfield search this winter, and agent Scott Boras told Nicholson-Smith and Hazel Mae (Twitter link) that Toronto indeed had interest in both of his clients.  Boras also said the Blue Jays had interest in another client in Joey Gallo, another left-handed hitter.

Gallo is coming off a thoroughly rough 2022 season, hitting only .160/.280/.357 with 19 homers over 410 plate appearances with the Yankees and Dodgers.  Gallo’s “three true outcomes” style will always limit his offensive productivity to some extent, yet he is only entering his age-29 season, and Gallo’s strikeouts haven’t stopped him from posting some big offensive numbers in the past.  As recently as 2021, Gallo posted a 4.2 fWAR season, and his ability to play a decent center field would also be of interest to a Jays team that would ideally like to give George Springer more time in a corner outfield spot.

With Gallo, Bellinger, and probably Brantley all in line to receive one-year bounce-back types of contracts, the Jays could be planning to address the outfield with just a shorter-term addition, and then focus on a longer-term addition for the rotation.  The Blue Jays appear to be open to all possibilities, however, and their pursuit of free agents is also obviously impacted by what they might do on the trade market, especially with their catching depth being in high demand.

The odds of Jansen, Kirk or Moreno increasing their value by the deadline is slim. Especially trying to split time between all 3.

I wouldn’t trade Kirk for anybody. His weight is his only negative. He’s a future star with his bat alone. If he stays at catcher he’s a possible MVP candidate. If Moreno develops then the Jays have the best duo in the sport.

I really like Kirk but his presence takes up the DH spot a lot and while he is great at getting on base, once he’s on it takes 2 Homeruns to get him home.

Kirk will bring back the most value, it will hurt to lose him but if you can get an impact OF or SP the team overall will be better. It’s a risk though for the reasons you outlined

Moreno would likely be in AAA for most of the year if all 3 remain into the season until an injury or shakeup needs to happen

The answer is simple, they need to dump Jansen NOW it improves the defensive side of catching and it will improve the pitching. The Blue Jays would be wise to take whatever they can get for Jansen and be done with him.

If they keep Jansen they will play him and that will only hurt them.

Jansen is the best game caller the Jays have. The pitchers rave about his pitch sequences and prefer throwing to him over the other catchers. There is a good reason why he was the one getting the bulk of the starts behind the plate down the stretch and not Kirk.

Kirk and Moreno leaned heavily on Jansen when making their game plans for their starts behind the plate. If he goes expect to see a drop off for Kirk and Moreno in that department.

No Jansen is not their best game caller and defensively he is one of the worst catchers in the league. You can pick any site and look up the DEFENSE ONLY stats but to cheery pick a few he had 7 errors and 4 catcher interference in only 63 games. He is ranked 69th in pitch framing (very important for the current staff), he is 70th in catcher defensive adjustment. I can keep going but you can look it up. I used Baseball Prospectus this time. Also if you look Jansen tends to only get 5+ maybe 6 total innings out of his starters vs Kirk who tends to get 6+ usually 7 out of his starters.

Also both Kirk and Moreno (small sample size) rank higher than Jansen in every defensive category, with Kirk ranking in top 10 in most top0 3 in Defensive adjustment and 5th in framing.

Btw the Jays were also 50-22 when Jansen was in the lineup and 42-48 when he wasn’t. Somehow I feel like those numbers don’t quite matchup with your narrative that the team is worse with him in the lineup.

You are looking at the offensive side as well. He had a good offensive year. I stated strictly defense when I did my quote but being in a lineup and catching making an impact from behind a plate are 2 different things.

Also just to quote wins is such a hard stat to quantify one player.

Of course I am. Players don’t just have to play defense. They need to hit too. Kirk’s numbers fell off a cliff in the 2nd half while Jansen’s got stronger as the year went on. When factoring in both defense and offense Jansen was more valuable on a per game basis as per both bwar and fwar.

I’m not saying that Kirk is a bad player he definitely isn’t but you’re acting like Jansen was somehow hurting the team when that’s not the case at all.

Also Jansen’s defense was likely impacted by the oblique strain he suffered early in the season. Anyone who has had one can tell you that healing from one takes a significant amount of time and will definitely hamper your mobility behind the plate. An offseason of rest will probably help him quite a bit. In 2020 he lead the league in blocking runs saved and in 2021 he was in the top 20 despite having less than half the opportunities that most of the people ahead of him on the leaderboard did.

In case anyone hasn’t figured it out, Shapiro and Atkins don’t have a clue what they are doing. It is a dartboard approach for them. Shaprio has admitted he doesn’t have a clue about signing free agents. “we stand back and throw the dart and hopefully we hit a bullseye.”

The BlueJays under Shaprio have developed 2 arms in 7-8 years: Manoah who came that way drafted and Romano who they got lucky with when they didn’t protect him and was drafted away then returned.

It is time to get rid of these guys and get a new baseball operations leadership team. Let Shapiro do what he does exceptionally well, be a business leader and continue renovations.

Seemed to do okay with Robbie Ray and Semien two years ago. Gausman and Jimi last year. Jury is still out on Kikuchi and Berrios has been on and off.

        All were reasonable gambles.

Why is it always the front office fault when the guys on the field don’t live up to expectations. 1 team can win it all and putting out a perennial playoff team is all that the FO can do. The rest is up to the players and this FO has done just about everything they can do build a winner. Yes, more needs to be done this off-season and based on the past couple of years I’m confident that the right guys will be added to make a serious push again this upcoming season..

Jimmer blocks anyone who disagrees with him but every offseason he makes these broad proclamations which turn out to be completely wrong. Makes me wonder if he even watches baseball. Basically if you want to succeed do the complete opposite of what this guy says.

Here’s a direct quote from jimmertree in 2021 spring training.

Most of those “starters” that you mention are crap or aren’t ready to start in the majors. Ryu is elite. Matz is good but can’t stay on the field. The rest are awful.
So their starting pitching will not be fine.

2021 starting rotation was pretty good if I recall.

March 22nd 2021 he pretend like he talked to someone within the organization and said

“ one person within the room feels he (yates) will return to elite status and I concur, it’s just going to take awhile.”

Also on March 22nd of 2021

“Halo, on a positive side the jays have very good set up guys. One is elite. Kay is good (lol), ramano is very good, dolis is good, coke is ok. And merryweather is a elite set up guy. “

Of course the jays starters were excellent and their bullpen was quite bad in 2021.

Jimmertree should be laugh at every time he posts.

Cleveland has a number of young (and cheap) LH hitting OF’s. They won’t trade Steven Kwan, but others might be made available.

Perhaps a trade can be worked out that sends Danny Jansen to the Guardians.

The Jays badly need to get some younger players.

They had the ninth youngest roster last year by average age and the players pulling that average up are all pending free agents next season. Don’t think age should really be a concern for them.

This is typical Boras move. His famous words are, “Team A, B, and C are showing interest. But team D has made several calls on services for my client.” Just to Jack up their stock. Boras has used this for as long as he’s been around. It’s a classic move by him around the Winter Meetings. It will die out by the new year and regain steam come February when Boras comes out with Team E and F in the mix with Teams A, B, C, and D. In reality at best 3 teams are trying to sign a guy like Judge or Nimmo. Again, it’s to drive up their market and get the most bang for their buck. It worked well with Cole, Cano, Trout, Pujols, and many many others.

OK Toronto which pitcher do you want Marco or Flexen? What do you have in the way of prospects you can send? A couple of OFers that are a couple years away with a Pitcher or two. You can have them both if you want. Especially if we land Senga. What are the offers.

I also want to know why they traded Teo and now they are looking for what they traded away. It really doesn’t make sense unless there is some underlying health issue they didn’t disclose.

Jays appear to be sitting on their thumbs! I’m not sure what they are waiting for but it seems like all the talent is signing up with other teams. I’m not sure if it is poor Jays recruiting or just simply that it is tough to get players to sign on the only Canadian team for an MLB season which we know is long and grinding. It’s just frustrating to watch good players signing up with other teams. We need a right fielder to replace Teo or Center Fielder if we move Springer over. Brantley would be a great addition!

C’mon Blue Jays Recruiting!!! Let’s wake up and get serious!! Crunch those numbers and open up the purse strings!! You have to pay to play with the big boys!!
