Padres Offered Trea Turner $342MM Deal

By Anthony Franco | December 6, 2022 at 12:35pm CDT

Dec. 6, 12:35pm: The Padres offered Turner a guarantee of $342MM, tweets Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

11:51am: The Padres’ offer to Turner was not only higher than the offer he accepted from Philadelphia but would have made Turner the highest-paid infielder in baseball, topping Francisco Lindor’s $341MM deal with the Mets, reports ESPN’s Buster Olney. The exact length of the contract, potential deferrals, etc. aren’t known at this time, but it’s a nevertheless jarring follow-up revelation in the wake of the Phillies’ deal with Turner. Lindor’s contract is currently the third-largest guarantee in Major League history.

While Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported in the aftermath of the Padres’ failed bid that the team is no longer pursuing shortstops, Olney writes that the Padres have at least been in touch with Bogaerts, echoing a similar sentiment reported last night by Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

More broadly, Olney reports that the Padres are “very serious about trying to do all they can” to win the franchise’s first World Series, which raises the question as to whether San Diego might emerge as a legitimate entrant in the bidding for Aaron Judge, Carlos Rodon and other top remaining free agents.

Dec. 5: The Phillies made the biggest splash of the offseason to date, agreeing to terms on an 11-year deal with Trea Turner this afternoon. Once finalized, it’ll make the two-time All-Star the 10th player in MLB history to land a contract worth at least $300MM.

Massive as the contract was, it apparently wasn’t the highest offer the shortstop had on the table. Matt Gelb of the Athletic reports the Padres made an offer which topped the one Turner accepted from Philadelphia. Specifics of the proposal aren’t clear, but Gelb adds the gap was wide enough San Diego’s offer would’ve translated into more money even after adjusting for California’s higher state income tax rate than Pennsylvania’s.

In the months leading up to Turner’s free agency, there was a fair bit of speculation about whether geography would play a role in his decision. He’s a Florida native who went to college at North Carolina State. His wife Kristen is from New Jersey. Turner reportedly expressed a desire to remain on the East Coast when the Nationals traded him to the Dodgers at the 2021 deadline, and while he downplayed geographic preferences in free agency, there seems to have been some truth behind the rumblings he could prefer heading back across the country. Turner also rejoins longtime Washington teammate Bryce Harper and hitting coach Kevin Long in Philadelphia.

On the one hand, losing out on a star player even after making the highest offer has to be a tough blow for San Diego. Yet it also illustrates the possibility for the franchise to continue pushing chips in as they aggressively seek to augment one of the game’s more talented rosters. One could argue shortstop is more of a luxury buy for the Friars anyhow, with Fernando Tatis Jr., Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth all on hand as middle infield options. Yet San Diego was willing to put forth one of the largest contracts in league history to try to add another star to the lineup.

San Diego has also been tied to Xander Bogaerts this offseason. That they were the high bidder on Turner doesn’t inherently mean they’ll top the market for Bogaerts instead, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if they pivot in that direction now that their primary target is off the board. The Padres have exceeded the luxury tax threshold in each of the past two seasons, and they’d have to do so again to add any of the star free agent shortstops. Roster Resource estimates their CBT ledger around $3MM below the base tax threshold of $233MM, and signing Turner for an average annual value around the $27.3MM he received would’ve pushed them into the second tier of penalization. That’d have involved a 50% tax on the first $20MM — an extra $10MM — and further taxes from that point forward, but it was apparently a bill owner Peter Seidler was content to foot for another star. How or if they reallocate that money, either in a pursuit of Bogaerts or in more directly addressing areas of need like first base and the corner outfield, remains to be seen.

As for the Phils, they now anticipate looking to the pitching market after adding to an already loaded position player core. Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets the middle of the rotation and back of the bullpen are target areas for the Phils, who now aren’t far off the base luxury tax tier themselves. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters this evening the club is looking for a setup-type reliever who could mix and match with Seranthony Domínguez, Connor Brogdon and José Alvarado at the end of games (via Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer).

While the Phillies certainly aren’t taking their foot off the gas, Dombrowski downplayed the possibility of adding another player who’d rejected a qualifying offer. The Phils forfeited their second and fifth-highest picks in next year’s amateur draft plus $1MM in international signing bonus space for Turner, who’d turned down a QO with the Dodgers. They’d lose their third and sixth picks to sign another qualified free agent, and Dombrowski told Coffey and others the team doesn’t have “much appetite” for that kind of pick forfeiture.

Has the most people fleeing by far. Even though California takes in the most money in the nation it is in debt that it will never get out of. Those states may be poor but they don’t spend what they can’t possibly afford on pipe dreams and lollipops. Just wait until those states and people you hate dam the water. It’s Curtains

Those poor states aren’t in debt because they leech off states like California. One such shot state Mississippi gets $2.60 from the feds for every dollar the state pays in, meanwhile California gets 65 cents. 7 of the top states that leech the most are red states.

It’s amazing how hard actual facts are for people when they get in the way of their narrative. California (full disclosure I’m a resident) is so broke it has a $300b budget surplus. Texas’s actual state budget is $143.5b. Lol!

@Darth – It’s been heavily speculated Trea preferred to play on the East Coast. Do you think that was overblown, and the economics of California was actually the dealbreaker for Trea’s decision? Or are you just using this as an opportunity to spout your anti-California rhetoric?

If it’s the latter, I suggest you take it elsewhere. This is a baseball website. There are plenty of outlets on Facebook or Reddit that will gleefully accept your contributions.

Turner is from N Carolina. His wife is s Jersey girl.
Trey Turner requested that the Nats trade him to an East Coast team.
The Nats received their best offer/players from the Dodgers.

Trey Turner is going home or close to it.
He has nothing against the West Coast.
Just wants to play closer to home and family.

My experience with San Diego is that it’s a bland place.

The temperature is more consistent than LA, so the winters don’t get as chilly or the summers as warm. Most of the nicer areas are incredibly expensive, and not really all that impressive. The influx of people moving there the past 30 years has made the freeways not much different than LA, DC, NYC.

My generation would refer to the area as “Plastic”.

There’s nothing wrong with going through a change of seasons each year.

Samuel, with all due respect, you’re spewing out BS. I live in SD, and I’ve visited all of those cities. Traffic is nothing like those cities, at least not to the massive scale. Different parts of town have different subcultures. Huge place for microbreweries. You’re about 45 minutes from snow and pine trees east, or a couple hours from buggying in the desert. And you can surf year round. Maybe it’s not your cup of tea, but it’s not the bland place you’ve described.

Two cents: SD is a terrific town…if I moved to the left coast that would be the spot for all of the reasons mentioned by others. LA is junk; SF crazy expensive and Portland / Seattle not as wonderful as folks think.

But if you understand places such as Philly…well, it is awesome. Grew up there and spent most of my life there…saw it become a terrific city. Moved down South for semi-retirement and frankly I think that I will head back north. Some of us are just city folk, and some of us just love all of what the Northeast has to offer. SD is really wonderful, but a bit sterile as compared to living in Philly. Very happy that Trea is an East Coaster as well, and that he married a girl from Flemington NJ.

The dodgers traded for Turner. The reason why the dodgers are a juggernaut is not the amount of money they spend. Other teams spend similar amounts and don’t win at nearly the same pace? I wonder what separates them?

Any team that played in a significantly shortened season gets an asterisk, yes. Pretty obvious a 60-game season has zero legitimacy when compared with 162. It’s baffling that people think 2020 was anything more than a glorified spring training. Pretty sad.

No, it has 100% legitimacy despite the shortened season, as it’s pretty obvious that the 60 games and the corresponding playoffs count just as much as any other season! There are no asterisks needed just as none have ever been used for the other shortened seasons or the ones heavily compromised by WWII. The only things from that season that aren’t really legitimate are the seasonal rate stats from that year.

It’s baffling that people think 2020 was anything less than a proper season despite the shortness of it. Pretty sad.

Why would 37% of a season count just as much as 100%? You’ve gotta be trolling. Imagine having an NFL ”season” be 6 games, or NBA being 30. Absolutely stupid…

Why aren’t the stats legitimate from 2020? Oh yeah, because it was a fake season. Thanks for proving my point, dumbo.

Of course it was shortened season but still legit. It was 60-game regular season for everyone that was also sweated out by everyone starting in spring training #1. Players were always on standby waiting to play and staying in shape even at their homes.

In fact, players had to deal with far more hardships playing during pandemic and all the safety and testing rules. 2020 tested players and teams mentally and emotionally in a big way. The Dodgers earned that championship, the last team standing in a very trying March – October.

It counts, simply because that’s all that could be played through no fault of anyone, just like the other shortened sports seasons caused by the pandemic. If the NFL and NBA seasons had been shortened that much, they also would’ve counted just as much. Absolutely stupid that you could think otherwise.

Those stats are indeed legitimate, even towards seasonal rate records when they really shouldn’t be, and they especially count towards career totals and counting rate seasonal crowns. Thanks for being unable to comprehend the words “aren’t really” and “seasonal rate,” dumbo.

The 1942-45 seasons were even more compromised than 2020, so you can’t put an asterisk on 2020 without doing the same for those seasons. Look, no asterisks in the ’40s…

Also, just not being 162 games is a stupid argument, since they didn’t play 162 in 1981, 1994, 1995, or any season before 1961.

It wouldn’t be a problem if other teams actually spent the money they have instead of pocketing it. The Phils team is certainly not home grown. But who can fault them for spending their money.

. Teams up w/ his old friend from DC and has a shot at contention next year. (Oddly enough that statement could’ve been true for both teams)

Wife’s hometown is an hour away in Jersey.

Ball players seem to love Jersey women. Wheeler, Harper, and now Turner. Nice little leg up for the Phil’s there.

Quality of life commuting distance outside Philly is quite nice. Rural, hilly, quiet, low crime, relatively affordable cost of living. Gas costs more in PA than surrounding states due to taxes, but the rest isn’t bad.

Plus it’s a great place for hobbies between having carlisle, hunting/fishing, open spaces, lack of govt overreach micromanagement what you can buy.

Also has plenty of water you can use what you want and no impending doom of existing brown outs and wild fires while mandating a massive crush of new electric usage via elimination of small gas engines and no new gas cars.

Lower tax rates are just a bonus.

How many brown outs in San Diego?

Total tax burden is not lower in PA, because they have a flat rate state income tax with no exemptions or deductions and property taxes that average 1.58%. In California we have both exemptions and deductions and the higher your income, the less likely you are to pay the full tax. Plus our property tax is locked in at 1% of the value established at the time you buy or build, so the average is 0.73% of home value. Less than half of that in PA.

          Reply
        • GASoxFan

With the electric mandates, assuredly, more will be coming.

As for the arguments about expenses, it’s undoubtedly higher.

You can buy 5 times the home in PA outside philly for less money than the same home in metro CA, or, specifically SD if you prefer.

So, if you pay .73% of 1,000,000 it’s 7300. If you pay 1.58% of 250,000 it’s roughly 3800. So nearly half the cost.

Prices of gas, about half in PA than CA. Same for other energy. Food prices? Same thing. Sales taxes, excise taxes, fees, smog crap, it goes on and on.

For people who like it? Great. But there’s a ton of diaspora fleeing CA and buying/moving to other states.

          To each their own.

On Trae’s end I’m sure he realized infield defense and a high BA/OBP hitter is a more meaningful upgrade to the Phil’s than the Padres though both teams are already really good and that gives him a better chance to win the World Series in Philly than San Diego. The full no trade clause helps a lot too

Tatis has a high AAV but it’s a heavily backloaded contract. It’s kind of a Stanton situation if the Pads wait too long to trade him, or, the full no trade kicks in. Probably need to win now and move him in a year or two, while leaving a decent core behind.

Rickey still walked a ton and stole some bases. Probably more than Turner will do. Rickey was good even in his early 40s.

My guess is it was both a combination of east coast preference and playing with Bryce again. I’m sure the teammate/hitting coach/division familiarity along with the east coast preference both combined helped to go along with the 300 mil. The article mentions that the padres offer was enough to offset the taxes, but it may not have added much more than that. After the offsetting of the taxes it could’ve been like 5-10 mil more that he’d of actually seen.

It is refreshing to see players occasionally taking less money to play where they actually want to play though. Unfortunately as a brewers fan though, I’ll likely never see someone be like “you know what, I’d rather play here for less” lol

@motown I mean, as a Brewers fan I can dream hah. But like whenever we trade for someone, or are in on a few agent and we’re a “top runner”, I just assume it’s the usual of them wanting to keep everyone in the hunt to make sure they get the biggest offer they can.

The actual article in the Athletic didn’t mention taxes at all

It said the Padres offered more guaranteed money and that Turner would have been their 3rd $300 million contract.

I think we are going to find out more in the coming days about deferrals in Turners deal with the Phillies that lower the total value or that there are incentives that could bring it to $300 million with not all of that being guaranteed money.

Or we could find that he just preferred to play closer to home like he said. There has to be a logical reason he chose not to talk to the Dodgers at all about extending there and that one makes sense.

I doubt that the Dodgers had much interest in re-signing Turner knowing what kind of contract he commanded. They knew fully well when they got him that it was a one and half year rental. They passed on Seager and Turner. They’re obviously very good players but less valuable when you have to shell out $300mm plus contracts.

Who really knows on these back stories. The Dodgers weren’t going to give Seager a $300mm plus contract and they certainly weren’t going to give Turner a $300mm plus contract. I think they knew this the very minute they considered trading for Turner that they likely would not re-sign him. Feelings certainly could have been mutual. L.A./Southern California is not for everyone. Front office always wants to paint the picture that they tried and were in it for him.

There was a recent CA proposition that was shot down that would have added an additional 1.75% to income above $2mm. As if having the highest state income tax bracket of 13.3% is not high enough. It was also hidden behind proceeds going towards wildfire prevention and electric charging stations. Shocked that it didn’t pass. Lucky that educators and Newsom were against it, or else you would have seen another wave of rich CA leaving the state. There will be other attempts to raise taxes on the wealthy. If it were purely for financial reasons I can see why athletes avoid CA.

Read an article in Houston Chronicle comparing Taxes in Texas
          (no state income tax)
          versus taxes in California.
It showed that taxes are actually higher in Texas than in California.
          That “no state income tax”
is more than made up for with higher property taxes, junk fees
and higher taxes in numerous other areas.

@SportsFan0000 Context, context, context. These articles are so stupid. The state income tax differentials only matters for the wealthy and those are the ones moving out of CA to TX and other no state income tax states. If you barely pay any state income taxes because you’re too low on the bracket it doesn’t matter.

          From your article.
“About the only Texans who fare better than Californians are the wealthy. The top 1% of earners in Texas — those making $617,900 or more annually — only pay 3.1% of their income in state and local taxes. That compares to a rate of 12.4% for top earners in California, who make $714,400 or more per year.”

Fiction. And we also know great tax attorneys in great state of CA that will say something different, at least if you want to do it legally. The notion that the ultra wealthy are moving out of CA and other high state income tax states to states with no income taxes is very real. I know so many people who did that during the pandemic and many that considered but chose not to for non-financial reasons. Of course there are non-legal/questionable ways to keep you from paying taxes to CA.

Why are people getting on Preller? I don’t understand this. Padres finally have an owner that wants to win and is willing to spend money and a GM that is aggressive going after high profile players. I do recall 26 other teams not make it to the ALCS/NLCS last year. The ones that did spent money.

Yes, the Padres won’t have a good farm system for a while, but it takes time for those players to pan out. Padres have a solid core of players and want to win now. Go for it.

DId any of you guys that are complaining actually go to Petco Park last year and see how electric the games were? The place was sold out on Tuesdays. San Diego has the Padres. No more Chargers. Fans are hungry and we have a front office that knows it.

Stop complaining and enjoy the ride. Its fun as hell.

To appease the irrational fans who think that your team should be signing every elite free agent out there. It’s a game. Make the fans think that you’re in it for everyone. I’m sure there are some free agents that you’re legitimate in it for, but some where you were really not that close but you want stuff leaked as to how close you were or that you at least considered that player. Unless you actually know these agents and GMs it’s hard to exactly believe what is fiction or truth.

They need some back of the rotation guys, more bullpen, a 1B an OF.

Other players who were uses as PTBNL’s before they were technically eligible to be traded didn’t have their names revealed as the PTBNL until they were actually sent to their new team. Brad Wieck for instance.

Trea Turner wasn’t the first or the last recent draftee to be used as a PTBNL in a trade that was made before he was eligible to be traded. But he was the only one that had his identity leaked immediately. Brad Wieck wasn’t announced as the PTBNL in the Alex Torres trade until he was officially sent to San Diego. I’d be willing to bet even Wieck didn’t know he had been traded.

Huh? The Mets largely shut down that line up all last year with Peterson, Megill and Walker pitching a number of those games including a no hitter. They added Verlander and all accounts show they are likely to add another solid arm a la Senga or Taillon. This pitching staff is better than last years already by replacing deGrom, who pitched 11 starts (5 of which were pretty bad) with Verlander. Hitting slumps. Pitching rarely does. Buy all the bats ya like it isn’t what wins in the end except in 2008 when they caught lightning in a bottle. They got super luck on that run to the World Series. They better realize they need pitching because if you believe the Phillies are even close to the Braves roster wise, you are not looking closely.

The Padres asked Turner to play 2B. Tatis is much, much better overall and Kim is a much better defensive SS One of them will be the Padres opening day SS.

The Phillies said he would start at SS.

He will still end up at 2B in a few years. His defense is not good enough to stick at SS for long.

Soto is 5 years younger than Turner, which one would you rather throw stupid $$$ at?

Signing Tatis and Machado to big deals in their 20’s is very different than Turner, dude will turn 30 next year.

Ohtani has nothing todo with my post, my point is which guy would you rather pay for? Soto, who is 24 or Turner who is turning 30?

The Padres really shouldn’t be as concerned long term anyway, they should be stacking up for the next 2 years, when they have a combination of Machado, Soto, Snell, Darvish & Hader. All those guys may be gone in the next couple years.

Trea Turner in years 3-11 of a contract doesn’t do you ANY good if you don’t have the above mentioned dudes.

IMO missing out on Abreu was a miss. He play’s a position they actually need and they could’ve thrown whatever AAV needed at him for 3 years. The same could be said for Verlander. If the owner wants to spend stupid money to play for titles the next couple years that’s awesome, but if you came to party in the short term, then party in the short term. Don’t throw money at Trea Turner on a contract that will wreck your team for a decade.

Soto’s stats after the trade deadline went into the toilet.

Soto is the most overrated player I have seen.
If Soto (and Josh Bell) had produced after the big trade,
then the Padres would have challenged the Dodgers for the Division
      and/or finished a much closer 2nd.

No way should Padres ownership give Soto 300m or 400M,

Preller and the Padres GOT HOSED BY THE NATS.
The Players the Padres gave the Nats in that short term deal
will be important pieces on the Nats next playoffs team in the years to come.

If Soto and Bell had hit better in the playoffs, then they could have won
the NL and the WS in ’22.

State income tax differential alone makes dollars similar. CA top bracket is 13.3% and I believe PA has flat tax rate of 3.07%. Plus cost of living much cheaper in Philly compared to SD. Obviously SD is a much nicer place to live but not everyone values that. And we have no idea on deferrals both sides. Lastly Turner is an east coast guy so not much value in staying out west.

People seem to think rich people pay anything close to the nominal tax rate.

      They do not.

      For example:

The current federal top rate is 37%.
On average the rich pay 9%. .

@JackStrawb I’m talking about state income tax differentials. Nothing to do with federal tax rate. State income tax codes are much simpler than federal tax codes. So, less opportunities for “manipulation” or loop holes.

Also, your view of who actually pays taxes is completely wrong. The 9% or so tax rate that you quote only really apply to the ultra ultra wealthy who can take advantage of these loopholes. 99.9% of us can’t. Probably less than 500 households. Most rich folks pay an absurdly amount of income taxes. Top 1% pays for 35-40% of all taxes paid. Top 5% pay for 55-60% of all taxes. Don’t forget the households that don’t pay any income taxes. The rich subsidize the poor by A LOT. This notion that the rich don’t pay taxes is dumb and unfounded.

Again LESS so in state vs federal. I know a lot of people paying 40-50% combined federal/state tax rate in CA. And plenty of those who have moved out of CA because of high taxes whether they’re expecting a taxable event or sick of paying all that tax. 13.3% state income tax in CA versus 0% in states like NV, FL, TX and others.

Oh god, here we go with the “Rich people don’t pay any taxes”

As a licensed CPA who owns an accounting firm it’s the most comical thing I hear all the time. I seriously piss my pants laughing.

Jeff Bezos most recently released tax return showed $1.6 BILLION (with a B) in federal tax paid on 6.4 billion of income (25%)

Elon Musk just wrapped up his 2021 filing in which he paid over $10 BILLION in taxes on $23.5 billion of income. (Over 40%)

Anybody making over $1,000,000 a year can bank on 33% tax. Sometimes its a little bit more, sometimes a little bit less but it’s always right in that ballpark. I know, I get paid real money to advise people on these issues. I don’t care about loopholes and some crap that your neighbor or your uncle told you about taxes, rest assured they don’t know what they’re talking about.

I can say that given the difference in state tax it seems like the Padres offered alittle bit more than just the difference in state taxes. My best educated guess is that over the life of an 11 year contract at $27m per season the California tax probably exceeds the PA tax by $20-30m

Another consideration is the road games, as players have to pay tax in each state they play in on a sort of prorated basis. So not only does the higher rate apply to games in San Diego but also the road games in LA and SF. In Philly he will get a handful more games per year against the Marlins so those games could potentially be free of state taxes.

Most Texans pay more taxes than Californians according to a Houston Chronicle article. Texas has no State in come tax.
Texas makes up for it with higher property taxes and higher junk fees and taxes on other things.

Well by all means if the Houston Chronicle said it then it must be true. They’ve always been a real resource for tax law.

Texas does have some of the highest property taxes in the country, I don’t think it’s high enough to shoot the total taxes higher than California (also the sales tax between the two states is close but California is probably slightly higher depending on county)

          As always, context matters.

CA is great if you are rich. Yes, the taxes are very high if you are rich but so is the quality of life complete with ocean views and great entertainment.

CA is great if you’re poor as we have a ton of social programs.

CA is really tough if you’re middle class. We have the lowest housing affordability index, the worst climate for small businesses, and the combined income, property, gas, and sales tax tsunami really hurts.

There are pros and cons with living and working anywhere. The great thing about the US is we’re free to move where it works for us.

Do you really believe that the middle income in TX/CA is $40K to $60K? That seems ridiculous low. The higher the income the higher the differential in taxes paid.

Also, while property tax rate is higher in TX vs CA, property value is much higher in CA vs TX, especially for larger more expensive homes. So, you’re taking a higher rate off of a lower base. So, total property tax paid on a comparable house much lower in TX.

Also, the context is baseball players like Trea Turner. These articles are geared toward lower income folks. Completely different picture when you factor in top earners like Trea Turner and other elite athletes.

The Padres’ offer would have been similar money after agent fees and taxes in California compared to the Philly’s offer in Pennsylvania.

Also- you get into the suburbs of Philly or you live in a bordering state and it’s idyllic out in the burbs or even the countryside and you can get a massive estate for the same price you’d spend in California for a tiny single unit parcel of land that an overstuffed, overpriced McMansion sits on where you are practically sharing a wall with your neighbors.

And I have lived in and appreciate NY, CT, PA, etc. along with CA. They all have their upsides and their downsides, but if he wanted to live on the East Coast, playing home games on the East Coast certainly helps. 81 games a season on an East Coast home team plus playing the teams in your division is an extra 4 months a year where he can sleep at home and not have to really travel so far he’s staying in a hotel for a lot of away games.

I don’t blame him for giving up $42M in order to get more time where he wants to be.

Maybe he just liked the players, manager, hitting coach and fans more in Philly. Maybe he just likes the atmosphere there.

He said that he wanted to play closer to home. He is from Florida, lives in North Carolina, and his wife is from southern New Jersey.

He didn’t even entertain an offer from the Dodgers.

The Padres tried to give him a huge payday to stay out west and he chose family. Can’t fault the guy for that.

If the Padres offered turner that much money; I believe they dodged a bullet with him turning that down. Use that money on starting pitching (Rodon,Senga, Walker). The Padres have Musgrove and Martinez as the only SP next season.

What an idiot. Coulda lived in San Diego (vs Philly) AND had another $42 mil? Doesn’t make sense. Maybe he doesn’t like wearing brown?

It’s a ton of money he’s making anyway so maybe he likes the team, manager, hitting coach and fans better in Philly.
