Twins Interested In Justin Turner, A.J. Pollock

By Mark Polishuk | December 18, 2022 at 7:37am CDT

Justin Turner and AJ Pollock are among the veteran free agents under consideration by the Twins as they look to further bolster their lineup, The Athletic’s Dan Hayes reports.  Of note, Hayes’ piece was written yesterday prior to Minnesota’s signing of Joey Gallo to a one-year, $11MM contract — Gallo was also listed as a player the Twins were targeting, though his addition could change the equation for other pickups.

In particular, Pollock might no longer be on the radar given how Minnesota’s outfield picture was already pretty crowded even before Gallo joined the roster.  Gallo, Byron Buxton, Max Kepler, Alex Kirilloff, Trevor Larnach, Mark Contreras, Matt Wallner, Gilberto Celestino, and Kyle Garlick are all outfield options for 2023, plus the versatile Nick Gordon could also get some time on the grass when he isn’t in the infield.

That said, there has been some trade speculation surrounding Kepler, and Gallo’s deal might be some hint that the Twins could view Gallo as something of a Kepler replacement.  Furthermore, Buxton, Celestino, and Garlick are the only right-handed hitters within that large outfield grouping, so acquiring Pollock would add more lineup balance and depth at all three outfield positions (though Pollock is no longer a defensive standout at any spot).

The Twins got a close look at Pollock when he played for the division rival White Sox last season, but they hardly saw the veteran at his best.  Pollock’s 92 wRC+ was his lowest in a full season since 2013, and he hit only .245/.292/.389 over 527 plate appearances.  Since he is entering his age-35 season, there is surely concern among some teams that Pollock has started to decline.

On the plus side, Pollock’s overall Statcast numbers were pretty decent, with an above-average strikeout rate and hard-contact numbers.  While his .317 xwOBA was nothing special, his .297 wOBA indicates some degree of bad luck.  Furthermore, Pollock’s overall batting line only took a hit against right-handed pitching — he had a .935 OPS in 133 PA against left-handed pitching in 2022, but a dreadful .593 OPS in 394 PA against righties.

As much as Pollock still looks capable of crushing southpaws, these drastic splits give pause to any club considering Pollock for an everyday job.  The Twins’ plethora of left-handed outfielders would make a platoon or timeshare pretty easy, though it remains to be seen if Pollock would be open to a reduced role.  Pollock already showed confidence in his ability to bounce back by declining his $13MM player option with Chicago and taking a $5MM, essentially making an $8MM bet on himself to find a larger deal on the open market.

There hasn’t been a lot of public interest in Pollock to date, while the Marlins, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks have all been linked to Turner, and at least one team (Miami) has made the infielder a proper offer.  Turner and Pollock were teammates with the Dodgers from 2019-21, and while the 38-year-old Turner is the older of the two, he also figures to be more expensive given the larger interest and a better platform year.

Turner hit .278/.350/.438 with 13 homers over 532 PA with Los Angeles in 2022, essentially having a split season in terms of production.  Turner had a measly .611 OPS over his first 243 PA of the year, but then snapped back into form and had a .940 OPS over his last 289 PA.  Considering the unique circumstances (i.e. the lockout, and the shortened Spring Training) of the lead-up to the 2022 campaign, Turner’s slow start could be written off as a product of an unusual offseason.

With the universal DH coming to the National League last year, Turner basically split time between DH and third base.  The Twins could deploy this same strategy, having Turner and Jose Miranda in a timeshare at third base (though both players at right-handed hitters) and using Turner at DH whenever Miranda is at the hot corner.  Apart from one game at second base and one mop-up inning as a pitcher, Turner has played only third base since the start of the 2017 season, but he could theoretically factor into the first base mix as well.

Christian Vazquez’s three-year, $30MM contract represents Minnesota’s biggest expenditure of the winter, and even with Gallo added, the Twins’ payroll still projects under the $118MM threshold.  That is well under the $134.4MM the Twins spend on their Opening Day roster last year, and given how Minnesota made a concerted effort to try and re-sign Carlos Correa to a pricey new contract, the Twins clearly have money to spend or re-allocate now that Correa has joined the Giants.

Twins have downgraded their offense since last season, and they haven’t even began to address their bullpen which is their biggest area of need. This “strategy” of having an organization wide philosophy of pulling pitchers before the 3rd time through, but filling the bullpen with minor league signings/reclamation projects is utter nonsense. You don’t want your starters to go deep… fine… if you have the bullpen to pull it off

      phantom – I totally agree!

On top of that, they are devaluing their starting pitchers by conditioning them to go only 5 innings.

How can a starting pitcher improve if he isn’t given the opportunity to learn how to approach a hitter for the third time in a game?

Strap – Even if the Japanese player does produce at Benny’s level, which is a huge question mark for anyone making the jump from Japan, Benny is still a much better defender too.

You’re spot on. I got fed up with the twins this year after years and years of the same stupidity and tried to watch other teams as my primary team. I tried the Yankees because of the excitement around Judge, but Yankees fans are insufferable. FIRE CASHMAN WEVE ONLY GONE TO THE ALCS 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 6 YEARS IM GONNA BURN MY STUFF IF HES NOT GONE. I’ll trade you Falvey and Levine for cashman. You’ll get bargain signings, a depleted farm system, and surface level analytics, and 20 years of not even making the ALCS

Try being a A’s fan and have a owner who is only concern with turning as big as a profit as he can every year while rejecting any stadium unless he gets a free stadium paid by the tax payers.

I agree with that sentiment, but just look at ticket prices at Yankee Stadium. If you are paying that much money, you probably expect to get your money’s worth. Even their TV broadcast is on YES network.

I would agree that that the Twins “aren’t that bad”. We have Buxton on a team friendly deal…one of the best rotations the Twins have seen in awhile….Duran….and decent young core coming up to build around…..the problem is that why not add a dynamite player or two (which would require spending to get back to last years payroll) to try to push us over the top, instead of always picking through the dumpster on reclamation projects?….as a fan it’s frustrating……the fine folks of Minnesota built a stadium for the Pohlands, the least they could do is give the fans an exciting product.

My opinion is the Twins added a great player in Kyle Farmer, a good catcher who can hit a little and a good defensive OF in Gallo who still has potential to put up good numbers in a platoon with Kyle Garlick, they have two nice prospects who will get some seasoning, they have to start thinking about extending Arreaz, but if their starting pitching holds up, and the bullpen is as good as it was last season, with a healthy Buxton, the Twins are right there in the AL Central.

Apparently we have no need of a shortstop or some half decent pitching. All we need are MOAR outfielders! Especially old, declining, injury-prone outfielders

The fact that they’re even considering Pollack when they have a HUGE surplus of outfielders is pure insanity. Do they want to platoon all 3 positions and carry 6 OFs on the roster? Even then they’ll still have to figure out what to do with the rest.

They have aa huge surplus of outfielders,, but not quality ones.
I think to start the season it’s
        Larnach-LF
        Buxton- CF
        Gallo-RF

Kepler gets traded. Kiriloff gets reps at first and splits time with Larnach. Gordon will need to play some short until Royce comes back. Garlick shuttles back and forth from St Paul.

If Contreras, Wallner, or Celestino are getting ABs with the big club, something has gone horribly wrong.

You guys would be much better to determine his value, so this is *not* my trade proposal; rather it is more an anticipation of how Cashman operates. But given the Twins current OF situation and their pitching needs, coupled with the Yankees current LF needs and our pitching/IF situation, it would not surprise me to see a trade commence between the two teams again.

I could see Kepler (or perhaps another OF) going to NY, and one of German, IKF, or Schmidt included in a trade package going back to MN.

Again, I could be wrong because I’m not that familiar with your OFers and how your FO operates. Just seems to fit.

I could see German’s profile as something the Twins would go for, but not sure how the FO feels about his off-the-field/ character issues.
FO has always been super high on Kepler, which is why he hasn’t been traded to this point, despite a lot of interest over the years.
Don’t think IKF fits anymore, seems redundant with Kyle Farmer. Miranda, Arraez, Polanco, Gordon all vying for tin in the infield as well.
The other possibility is moving Larnach/Kiriloff for a pitching upgrade with control.

I’m really hoping that the Twins’ reported interest in these other guys is moot after the Gallo signing. If they’re still pursuing the others, I have even less idea what they’re doing. It really seemed like they had few true holes to fill and plenty of payroll room to work with this offseason, and it finally set the conditions for their (rare) signing of a high-level free agent. Guys like Turner & Pollock seem like marginal upgrades, patches that the roster doesn’t really need.

Texas could use both of them. I hope Pollock’s last year was an anomaly since he has been really good in prior years. Turner could be JD Martinez or close to it. Also, he can play third base. Maybe teach Jung outfield because there are no outfielders left in free agency and clubs greatly overvalued their players via trade.

His OPS+ in 2022 with 2 teams was 79. His OPS was .638.

The Twins gave him a contract for $11m in 2023……

Ha, Twins are attempting to corner the OF market in hopes it drives up the value of the OF’s they are trying to trade.
Soon we will be the only team with OF’s and teams will be begging us to take their young controllable pitchers for a shot at taking home one of our OF’s.
