1:00pm: Mariners manager Scott Servais tells reporters that Kelenic’s injury occurred last night after he kicked a water cooler out of frustration following a ninth-inning strikeout (Twitter link via Adam Jude of the Seattle Times).
An emotional Kelenic met with reporters and expressed remorse (video link via Divish). “I let the emotions get the best of me,” said Kelenic. “I just feel terrible — especially for the guys. I just let them down, and I take full responsibility for it. It’s on me. It can’t happen.”
12:33pm: The Mariners announced that Kelenic has been placed on the 10-day IL due to a fracture in his left foot. A timeline for his return was not provided.
12:28pm: The Mariners are planning to recall outfield prospect Cade Marlowe prior to today’s game, reports Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. The 26-year-old will be making his MLB debut when he first takes the field. The team has not yet announced Marlowe’s promotion or a corresponding transaction, but Divish adds that Jarred Kelenic is wearing a walking boot pregame, so it seems likely there’s a pending trip to the injured list on the horizon.
Marlowe, a 20th-round pick in 2019, has elevated his stock from that humble draft status with consistently solid minor league showings — including a combined .287/.377/.487 slash between Double-A and Triple-A last year. Baseball America ranked him 16th among Mariners prospects heading into the season, noting that his speed, glove and power could make him at least a reserve outfielder in the Majors — despite questions about his hit tool.
Those concerns on his bat-to-ball skills were on display last year when he fanned in 38% of his 60 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. He’s pared that back to a more tolerable 25.4% in 2023, but Marlowe’s .255/.332/.461 slash in 319 plate appearances also represents a step back from last year’s production (and checks in below average in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, per wRC+). He’s still popped 11 homers this season and gone 25-for-29 in stolen base attempts this season.
Marlowe is already on the 40-man roster, so the Mariners don’t need to make a corresponding move in that regard. With Kelenic sidelined, Marlowe will be in line for plenty of at-bats in left field. Like Kelenic, he’s a left-handed hitter.
Kelenic, 24, got out to a blistering start this season when he hit .308/.366/.615 in the season’s first month. He’s cooled off considerably since that time but still possesses a solid overall .252/.320/.429 batting line with 11 homers, 24 doubles, a pair of triples and a dozen stolen bases through 326 trips to the plate.
Outfield help already seemed like a potential area of focus for the Mariners in advance of the Aug. 1 trade deadline — they were linked to Mets outfielder Mark Canha just this morning — and the loss of Kelenic only figures to add to that. Offseason signee AJ Pollock has delivered just a .169/.222/.325 slash since signing a one-year deal, and trade acquisition Teoscar Hernandez has fallen shy of expectations with a .240/.294/.419 batting line in his first 395 plate appearances.

Hard to say about this guy.
The PCL is “hitter friendly” as the article points out, and Marlowe might not be a force in The Show,
but something has to be done.’ And he does have some pop.
“Hope springs eternal in the human breast”, as the poet says.
So give this guy a shot.
Teoscar’s a bust out there as far as I am concerned.
Fred Park
As usual, I commented before I had all the facts, and now we see that Marlowe is a quick replacement for Kelenic.
Too bad. Kelenic was hitting his weight at least.
Egad.

What about Trammell?
mlb fan
I was wondering that too, but haven’t watched enough M’s games to know what’s going on with T.T. Maybe he hasn’t shown enough? It’s weird the M’s need outfielders because I thought they were OK in that area.
Fred Park
They need outfielders who can hit.
They were ok defensively, more or less. But the great need is for bats.
Marlowe is just a quick fix. He is probably in today’s lineup.
DCartrow
So if Marlowe’s a quick fix, it won’t be a long goodbye to Kelenic.
Fred Park
What happened was, he had an astoundingly good first game and then was basically a washout after that.
Gone.

Canha trade looking more apparent.

Welp.

You certainly have the correct username for this article. =D
M’s is for maybe
This article is a mere grain of sand in that beached carcass that is the Mariners franchise. My handle is testament to the tradition that started in 1977 and continues today. Maybe it’s just our destiny. Maybe I’ve been a Mariners fan since inception. Maybe they’ll be the death of me. True to the blue?
Maybe.

Joey Gallo… that dude has a career .198 batting average like wtf? Lol

M’s are sellers, per usual. As far as I’m concerned, Stanton is useless as an owner. All he wanted to do was break the playoff drought. That was his World Series. Lame as hell.
mlb fan
Just bash the owner and don’t really say anything specific or original. “Great” commentary, bro.
Chester Copperpot
I found John Stanton!
myaccount2
@mlb fan- What do you want me to say? I think it’s pretty straightforward and if you don’t understand why M’s fans were massively underwhelmed by this past offseason, maybe research it since I’m not here to provide commentary specifically for you.
Also, I feel that my claim that breaking the drought was his World Series is pretty original, personally, and I obviously implied that this is one of my issues with him, “bro.”
dshires4
Clearly mlbfan isn’t a Mariners fan. The growing frustration was that with new ownership would come a new with to build the roster AKA supplement the homegrown talent with free agents. But hey they did it, they broke the playoff curse! Now we dwell back into oblivion because a free agent class LOADED with talent was ignored so we could trade for Kolten Wong. Cool. You have NO idea how much good will the Mariners have squandered with the fan base in like 5 months.
brooklyn62
There has been a long lingering culture issue throughout the Mariners organization ever since Howard Lincoln was named the CEO. The M’s had a good run from 95-2001; never has a team had so much HOF talent and did so little with it! Lincoln tied Lou Piniella’s hands when he asked for needed pieces at the trade deadlines. Then the horrid Bavasi came in as GM and destroyed what was left of a good team. The liar Jack Z. came next to make bone headed draft picks. DiPoto’s been trying to clean up a nearly 20 year mess of an organization.
Dumpster Divin Theo
They were fun in the 80s when they placed in that tacky dome- I think they nicknamed it the SeaTac dome. Edgar, a young unit, Ferris buhner. Punching bag of the west. Good times
myaccount2
Bavasi was clueless, Jack Z was even more clueless.
mlb fan
I don’t agree with you, so I must not “be a fan”, gotcha. Your originality is even worse than the original guy I spoke to. Sounds like neither of you guys watch a lot of Mariner games, since your lame “commentary” is the same “bash the owner” commentary you hear 400+ times a day on this site. Not exactly original or informative.
brooklyn62
I moved to Seatte in late 1988. Live in Eastern Washington now. I have 35 years of observing the M’s and their complete lack of success as an organization. Pat Gillick and Lou were handcuffed by Howard Lincoln at the height of “great” M’s teams. Terrible lineage of GMs afterwards. They let Eric Wedge run Ichiro out of town for garbage from the Yankees.Minor leagues were bankrupt of MLB talent for years. I’m not a big DiPoto fan and Servais is slightly above mediocre, but there is at least some forward motion as an organization.
Tigers3232
@dshire the reason they trade for Wong was because although there was a ton of talent in last years FA class, there was little talent at 2B. The upcoming 2B class is looking to b just as bleak once the team options are exercised.
myaccount2
@mlb fan- Just because you say something doesn’t mean it’s true. It’s ironic you claim that myself and dshires aren’t saying anything when you literally have not said one thing of substance. Not sure what your infatuation with Stanton is but it’s weird. Sorry you think the M’s are running a high enough payroll when it’s clearly not true.
myaccount2
@Tigers3232- Not completely true. We looked into the whole FA class and supposedly had an offer out to Turner to play 2B but he wanted to play on the east coast and stick at SS. The ultimate issue is Stanton didn’t pony up the money to guarantee a bat when it was desperately needed for this upcoming season.
brooklyn62
Amen,brother! Truth!
Tigers3232
Well Turner turned down larger offers to play for Phillies. You can’t fault a GM for a player being set on something else. If he’s going to turn down more $ with opportunities to play the same position. Expecting him to opt for playing out of position is just absolutely unrealistic. So yes as far as 2B went the market was very thin. When teams are trying to lure in players to play out of position that just further solidifies how thin the position was in FA last year.
mlb fan
Point taken. I’ll concede that you outpointed me on this one. Until we meet again.

I’m from Auburn WA, just outside Seattle and it’s completely nuts here now with the crime, homelessness and drugs. I cannot afford to move at this time unfortunately. I hear what you say about Seattle.
Tigers3232
@MLB I can’t help but shake my head at some of these comments fans make in hindsight criticizing what was done. There were no 2Bs to b had, trading for Wong at the time was actually a rather shrewd move on their behalf. Unfortunately it just hasn’t panned out. Personally I just don’t see the bats they ve collected complementing each other well in this lineup. I think Teoscar thrived in TOR hitting with good protection. Guys like Suarez just don’t provide that. I did expect JRod to fill that role a bit more and maybe he will at some point. But I’d say there biggest need is one consistent bat. Not necessarily a huge power threat but someone who hits consistently and can produce at least doubles at a high rate.
brooklyn62
I know Auburn. We lived in Edmonds. Even Lynnwood/Edmonds has declined from the drugs and crime.
myaccount2
Tigers- That’s my point, though. If you can’t land the big fish via FA then make a trade. Wong was a solid move (without the ability of hindsight) but everyone and their mothers knew the M’s needed a big bat (which he isn’t) so if that move is to made, go out and trade for an impact DH or OF, too. The Teoscar addition to the OF/DH role was not enough. We were still a good bat short and that’s proven to be true.
Even with the moves that were made, it was pretty clear the division was not a possibility and that it would be a fight for the wild card. Stanton needed to allow this team to take on a high-salaried impact bat but he drew the line, which is why we are where we are.
deepseamonster32
Jarred has tremendous passion and high self-expectations, which has helped make him a big leaguer. Unfortunately, he gets angry all the time. Better than he was his first trip to the big leagues, but this event is not a great shock.
Hopefully this injury will help JK channel his passion away from anger.
Badfinger
That was funny. Thank you. BTW, you have a future in public relations.
User 3595123227
Sounds like you know him personally. Hopefully a late night chat full of emotional support from you will set the passion free.

If more of the mariners had even half of Kelenic’s passion, this team would be true contenders!!
Dumpster Divin Theo
Kelenics mom is that you

Then half the team would be on the IL with broken bones!
User 401527550
How’s that? They would all be in the IL with self inflicted injuries.
brooklyn62
Right! My point exactly! Fiery guys that kick coolers/punch walls= IL.
Tigers3232
I’m not sure how passion would help. Don’t see passion equating to more contact. They ve got alot of all or nothing swinging types like Suarez, Raleigh, and Teoscar. Crawford and Wong are what they are. Kelenic has yet to b consistently productive. That pretty much leaves JRod and France who both are having kind of down years, which kind of should b expected with the inconsistent lineup protection around them.
kwolf68
Not sure why people responded to you with sophomoric comments, but I think you are right. Jarred is his own worst enemy be it getting pissed at a call or something that throws him off his game or NOW actually hurting himself by being upset. JK has a lot of work to do between the ears to get right.
He was actually trending up this year, despite a pretty big slump there, he was showing some signs and was tracking toward a 20/20 season. Oh well.
User 3595123227
If it makes you people feel any better the Mariners still have to pay him even after his childish actions. Maybe he takes you all out to lunch. We’ll see.
Bookbook
Seattle is a strange city. Rey liberal residents, but very little progressive policy. The developers seem to run the show. And it would be a great place to live if it weren’t so incredibly expensive.
Rsox
Kelenic finally starting to put it together and ruins it with a childish display of frustration.
mlb fan
I want to defend the player in this; but I just can’t.
Tigers3232
11 HRs and a .252 BA isn’t exactly what I’d call putting it together. He has had little streaks where it seemed things started to click, they ve all been short lived though.
brooklyn62
Tigers3232…it’s the Mariners fan base. They’ve been starved for so long that 11hrs & .252 average is putting it together. Kelenic has been the prospect they’ve longed for since the Diaz/Cano trade.
Tigers3232
I know the hype that’s been behind him. Just not seeing it as him putting it together by any means. Hes nowhere close to what he had shown in minors as far as consistency and his K rate hasn’t wavered whatsoever.
As a Tigers fan I see the same false hope anytime Torkelson hits a HR. Just to me neither of them have shown anything that I’d deem worthy of considering putting it together.
solaris602
These self-inflicted injuries just keep happening. I’m trying to come up with a way that dugouts and clubhouses can be made moron-proof. Everything would have to be covered with a thick layer of memory foam for starters.
stymeedone
As it says in the Hitchhikers Guide: A common mistake when trying to design something foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of fools.
solaris602
I see your point. I was trying to think way out of the box when I had the idea of putting a Vulcan in every dugout. He’d stay close to the hot heads and render them unconscious with a neck pinch to prevent them from hurting themselves. But, alas, the hot heads would find a workaround and run to the nearest cinderblock wall and punch it before anyone had a chance to stop them.
kma
I wish Fred Sanford was the manager.
“You big dummy!”
lee cousins
The M’s have plenty of outfielders, the problem being rookies are unpredictable, nonetheless they preferred to wait them out. This has only exaggerated the rebuild process beyond their time stamp which many of us have become frustrated with, because of their slow decisions making. We only have to look at the Birds, Rangers, Snakes who were in the same shape we were not so long ago.
pbuchman
What a complete embarrassment. It’s contemptible enough to watch a grown man throw a temper tantrum, but then to injure himself while doing it is almost comically shameful.

Jarred Kelenic is still fighting the same demon he always has.
He hates failure so much that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
He has always gotten excessively angry with himself, On the plus side, at least he got it conquered enough to not display it so much in the batters box.
But there it was waiting to pounce, as soon as he “really let the team down”.
I feel sad for Kelenic because I’ve always had that same demon in me. It ruins a person’s performance.
I never got it whipped completely either.
TalkingBaseball
I’ve had that demon in me too, as a 58 year old man it now works for me. I love seeing that fire and raw desire in him. it has the potential to drive him to greatness, or bring him to his knees. I don’t want him to lose it, or even tame it, just control it. He’s made great strides this year. This news is a big setback, but he either turns in and uses it or it’ll use him.
I love the guy, he just needs to keep dialing it in.
Bill the Cat
Did anyone see Kelenic’s interview? Dude was literally crying. Not to excuse the recklessness of his actions, but he is obviously remorseful. Hoping that he is healthy and playing again sooner than later.
DCartrow
It takes a big man to cry.
It takes an even bigger man to laugh at that crying man.
Bill the Cat
@DCartrow – hoping that your comment was not directed towards me. I certainly wasn’t laughing or making fun of JK, I was defending him and wishing for a quick recovery. He’s important to the M’s now and their future.

Cody Bellinger, come on down…
Stevil
Marlowe had an impressive 17-game hitting streak end just last night in which he slashed .342/448/.685 with a 165 wRC+ and a much more tolerable 19.5 K%
That’s why it was him over Trammell.
For this speculating over a Canha trade, I wouldn’t get too excited. Seattle isn’t in contention and Canha has just a year of control (club option). Far more likely Seattle trades for younger, more controllable outfielders and give opportunities to internal options.
Teo’s slash line doesn’t look great, but he had an excellent June and will probably change uniforms by the deadline.
Point is, I don’t think Seattle’s likely looking for outfield help for 2023. I think their focus is likely more on the future.
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
I think they will trade a pitcher to the Cardinals for Dylan Carlson.
Stevil
Every one of Seattle’s young pitchers are far more valuable than Dylan Carlson.
If they trade a starter for a bat, it will probably be Miller, who won’t be a free agent till 2030.
So, the return should be significant.
solaris602
It would make a lot of sense for them to deal Hernandez. They likely have little interest in re-signing him after the season any way. The perfect place for him is in RF for CLE, but whether or not they even see themselves as buyers right now is anybody’s guess.
Stevil
There are a few teams that make sense for Teo.
Seattle won’t likely be traditional deadline buyers or sellers. The question for me is whether or not they focus on 2024 or 2025.
LFGMets (Metsin7)
Pretty much got injured in a similar way as Pat Zachry got injured. Zachry was never the same. Hope Kelenic can learn from his mistake
