Red Sox, Eddy Alvarez Agree To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | July 26, 2023 at 11:10am CDT

The Red Sox are in agreement with utilityman Eddy Alvarez on a minor league contract, tweets Chris Cotillo of MassLive. He’ll join their top affiliate in Worcester.

Alvarez, 33, had spent the season in Triple-A with the Brewers after signing an offseason minor league deal. The left-handed hitter put together a nice showing for their top affiliate, posting a .283/.397/.473 line over 257 plate appearances. He walked at an excellent 14% clip against an average 22.6% strikeout rate while playing each of second, third, shortstop and both corner outfield positions.

Nevertheless, Milwaukee declined to add him to the MLB roster. Alvarez opted out of the deal a couple weeks ago and will take another crack at the majors in the Sox’s organization. He earned brief MLB looks with the Marlins and Dodgers between 2020-22, hitting .183/.262/.262 with one homer in 50 games.

Alvarez is a much more accomplished Triple-A hitter. The Miami native has a .286/.390/.468 line over parts of seven seasons at the top minor league level. He’ll bring that strong upper minors track record and defensive flexibility as a depth option for Boston.

He’s left handed which is what the club was looking for. This could mean another minor trade is coming with Story due back soon.

      “Kike’s Replacement”

Alvarez hasn’t played in the majors, yet this year, and his WAR is still higher than Kike’s.

Hopefully Bloom isn’t stupid enough to ink this guy to a 10 million contract like Kiké.

        “Hopefully . . . ”

Hopefully Bloom is smart enough to get 5.2 WAR over 3 years for only 22.9 Million like Kike.

But lets not be silly, why look at Kike’s whole body of work with the Red Sox, when we can remove the good years, and just complain about the worst one.

        Lol, haters be hatin.

Is it hating, or is simply a lack of knowledge?

If there’s anything this team needs, it’s a utility infielder/outfielder…

Because another trade might be coming. Bloom is on record indicating he wanted a lefty reserve infielder.

Because that’s exactly what the team needs to make the playoffs….

A lefty reserve infielder gets them to the playoffs? Or was that sarcasm? 🙂

I think you have to look at the schedule to set expectations. Altuve came back and Alvarez too for Houston, Judge is back within a week. The down times in Houston have already changed and Altuve will make them the team to beat. Texas is fading but not enough to be caught in the playoff race.

Something has to give for the team standing at the door of the playoffs to enter. It all comes back to who can win the remaining AL East games and there is little chance the GM will make a significant add. History shows he usually adds unnecessary parts at the deadline when he is pressured into acquiring something to save face..

Duran, Turner, Yoshida, Verdugo and Devers will need to carry the load the rest of the way to make the playoffs. They need to perform well versus good pitchers from the AL East teams and Houston. They can’t afford to be swept by bad teams like earlier in the year.
