Yankees Activate Aaron Judge

By Steve Adams | July 28, 2023 at 1:50pm CDT

The Yankees announced Friday that they’ve reinstated reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge from the 10-day injured list. Infielder Oswald Peraza was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

A toe injury has kept Judge out of the lineup since June 3, and details surrounding his potential return have been somewhat vague. Manager Aaron Boone said earlier this week that it’s possible Judge could return for the Yankees’ weekend series against the division-leading Orioles, and it appears he’ll be active for all three of those critical games.

Judge, 31, has once again been outstanding in 2023, hitting .291/.404/.674 with 19 home runs in just 213 plate appearances. He’s been sorely missed in a Yankees lineup that is devoid of other notable offensive threats; since Judge landed on the injured list, the Yankees have batted just .220/.296/.374 as a team. Their 163 runs scored in that time rank 29th in the Majors, leading only the Royals. They went 19-23 with Judge on the injured list.

At least initially, Judge will split his time between right field and designated hitter, tweets Greg Joyce of the New York Post. The Yankees will understandably ease him back into the outfield alongside Harrison Bader and whichever of Jake Bauers, Billy McKinney or Greg Allen is in left field on a given day. Willie Calhoun was designated for assignment earlier this morning. Stanton has already been playing a fair bit of right field but could see an uptick in outfield reps, given Judge’s occasional rest days at designated hitter.

The Yankees currently sit two and a half games out of a Wild Card spot, and much has been made about their status leading up to Tuesday’s trade deadline. Judge’s return will push them closer to full strength as the front office makes its final decisions on how to proceed with the roster. The Post’s Jon Heyman reported this week that the Yankees would target an outfielder and reliever if they didn’t slip too far in the standings, but they’ll face a tough task against Baltimore this weekend.

They fired their hitting coach when all they really needed was for Judge to return.

Weekend series against the Orioles for Aaron: 0 for 12 with 8 strikeouts, One groundout for a double play, and one walk. Throw in an error if he is not the DH all weekend.

If he really plays all three games, and gets 12 at-bats? Hard to guess, but 0-12 is quite unlikely. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more like 4-12, with 3 singles and an extra base hit. I wouldn’t be shocked if it was 5-12 with at least one homer. He probably K’s half the at-bats. I just don’t see an 0-fer.

He won’t play all three games so I doubt that he will get 12 ABs.

    They need him. Badly.

They also need other parts. The Yanks are not far off from a playoff spot. Let’s see how much they want it.

I have never understood. WHY do they wait for the trade deadline?

It seems to me, I have.never seen a team, on the edge, deciding a month before then traded deadline to.just go for it….. it seems to me you would.want to get better players earlier than the trade deadline if at all possible or….
Then bail if it doesn’t look hopeful.

The Yanks could.have made some.moves a while.back and make a clearer, more informed decision today.

it’s not the buyers waiting… it is the sellers waiting as long as possible (whether delusional or intentional) to keep their own postseason hopes alive for their fanbase so they can continue selling tickets as long as possible.

Because the players are like 70% cheaper, that is the bottom line for Cashman and Steinbrenner.

Who from the A’s would have helped them? You can’t make a trade to add, until there are teams that decide to sell. A month ago only the A’s were selling. They still are, and yet nobody has bought from them.

It is the sellers waiting, but not because they may make the PS. There are plenty of teams with assets to sell that know they have no chance at the playoffs. They wait because they want to make sure they maximize the return. Any team trading for a player a month or so before the deadline pays a premium, more than if they had waited.

I doubt understand why everyone always says Judge is frail, has he missed a lot of games, yes but many are freak accidents and not his body breaking down

    2016 Oblique (body issue)
2018 Wrist injury (hit by a pitch breaking it, freak accident, could have happened to anyone)
    2019 Oblique (body issue)
2020 Rib injury (hurt while making a extra effort catch diving against a wall, freak accident)
    2020 Calf (body issue)
2021 Covid (a lot of people got covid that year, not a body issue)
2023 Hip (while digging for extra base, effort play, not a body issue)
2023 Toe (while making a extra effort play running into a wall, freak accident)

So since 2016 he’s had only 3 real IL stints because of his body, the rest are just freak accidents that cost him time.

I still think no matter the HR record and everything else. The right moves were to let Judge and Rizzo walk. The Yankees need to wait and build around Soto. Judge is too injury prone. Judge is also selfish taking every last penny from Yankees. If Judge truly wants to win then take less money so the Yankees have resources left to sign other great players. These are not the George Yankees. Steinbrenner is not Cohen and refuses to go above and beyond like his father.
