Yankees Activate Frankie Montas

By Nick Deeds | September 30, 2023 at 7:18pm CDT

The Yankees announced this afternoon that they had activated right-hander Frankie Montas from the 60-day injured list. In corresponding moves, the club placed outfielder Jasson Dominguez on the 60-day IL and optioned right-hander Randy Vasquez to Triple-A.

Montas is expected to make his 2023 season debut as a multi-inning piggyback starter in one of the club’s final two games against the Royals. It will be just Montas’s ninth appearance with the Yankees since they acquired him from the A’s ahead of last year’s trade deadline. In eight starts with the club last year, Montas struggled to a 6.35 ERA with a 4.93 FIP. He struck out just 17.8% of batters faced with the Yankees and walked 8.1% before being placed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation last September. The issue eventually required surgery back in February, and Montas has missed the entire 2023 campaign to this point while rehabbing.

Despite Montas’s tumultuous Yankees tenure, the 30-year-old right-hander appears to hope to return to the club in 2024. Montas told reporters (including Greg Joyce of the New York Post) that he hopes to re-sign in New York this coming offseason, though he added that the sides have not yet discussed a potential new contract at this point.

Although his history in the Bronx to this point has been rough, a reunion could make sense for both sides. Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Nestor Cortes appear to be the only three players locked into rotation spots headed into the 2024 campaign, and the addition of a veteran arm like Montas could ease the pressure on youngsters like Michael King, Clarke Schmidt, and Vasquez. Montas would surely be a fairly short-term, low-cost signing given his recent history, meaning the Yankees’ ability to take a bigger swing at a top-of-the-market arm like Blake Snell or Yoshinobu Yamamoto would be unaffected, should they be interested in such a deal.

For Montas, it would give the righty a familiar place to re-establish himself as the mid-rotation starter he has been throughout his career. From 2018-2021, Montas posted a 3.57 ERA with a nearly matching 3.55 FIP in 401 innings of work. That body of work was 17% better than league average by measure of ERA+, and is right in line with the performance Montas delivered in 2022 prior to departing Oakland. In 19 starts (104 2/3 innings) with the A’s last year, Montas posted a 3.18 ERA (116 ERA+) and 3.35 FIP with a strikeout rate of 25.8% against a walk rate of just 6.6%. If Montas is able to recapture the form he had in the first half last year, he’d surely be an asset to the rotation of the Yankees or any other club looking to add a mid-rotation arm this offseason.

Maybe the Yankees want to keep him, but I really cannot understand why the Yanks even tendered Montas a contract.

He was tendered the contract before the injury was known. Taking a chance on Montas turning it around after a full spring with Matt Blake made sense at the time. Unfortunately it just didn’t work out

For the same reason they traded all that prospect capitol to pay him 7.5 million to be injured? It’s the Yankees way?

If he can get away with games where he pitches 0 innings and gives up, what, 8 runs, carry an ERA well above 6 while missing half the season, then the Yankees second spot in the rotation is set.

Nope Sears and Waldichuk for years is a huge win over the Yankees getting zero value for Montas. Another bad move from Ninja Cash.

I think Zachary is kidding. A couple innings out of Montas doesn’t improve the Yankees outcome. Maybe Sears and Waldichuk end up being good, but Montas hasn’t given the Yankees much at all.

Maybe pitching pain free for 3 or 4 innings tomorrow, gets Montas a contract for $7.5-$8.0 million from the Yankees, or someone else next season. He’d still likely be cheaper then signing Sevvy on the open market.

Sevvy shouldn’t and probably won’t be a part of the 24 Yanks….he just can’t stay healthy and based on what was seen this year, he isn’t deserving of a start every 5th day with the Yankees……time to move on for both the team and the player….wish him well…..

Severino needs a change of scenery, Montas would be a better and cheaper option for the Yankees.

Yanks need to add a starter and Yamamoto seems to be a good choice. He won’t cost as much as Nola, and he is in his prime. Urias and Snell might cost more. Yanks biggest problem will be to add star position players. Soto, Bellinger, Chapman, and Candelario would be good on my list. Adding Soto, Yamamoto, and Candelario would be my choice!

Bet the Yankees will have tremendous competition for Yamamoto….time to roll out Godzilla and Tanaka to convince him to sign with them which would be very, very expensive but most probably worth it…..save the Schmidts, German, and maybe even King for a multi player trade involving Gleyber so that they can receive young, athletic left-handed talent to plug into the lineup……the other guys like Soto, Bellinger etc will cost too much either in time or cash….lets face it the Yankees aren’t 1 player away from winning the AL East and eventually advancing to the ALCS and the WS……..they’re going to have to rebuild over the next season or 2 to contend……always a chance they get lucky…..anything can happen in baseball but logically, they are a ways away from contending based on pitching, defense, hitting, and athleticism………

Please let the Yankees sign Chapman for 8/200

      Signed a Jays fan

He’ll be lucky to accept a QO and get to rebuild his value.

Chapman better hope he has a stellar post season or he’s not even getting a QO

And I hope the Jays outbid the Yankees for Bellinger. He would have put us over the Orioles this year and would have negated the Lourdes/Moreno for Varsho deal.

Got to give the As credit for selling Montas and Sean Manaea while they could get something. Really the only deal that was an outright bust were the Olson and Murphy deals.

Credit on Montas……Billy sold his old buddy an injured pitcher and Beanne knew, and further Montas did the Yankees bad by hiding that fact once traded……..any other GM would have gone right back on Beanne and the A’s for selling tainted goods but no Cashman…..he’s too much of a wussy to complain to MLB which both he and the Yankees should have done as opposed to tucking their tail between their legs and saying nothing…………again.

If I were the A’s I would just take Anthopoulos off my speed dial. Absolutely nothing good ever comes from them dealing with him. Anytime they are even in the same room as him they should check their pockets to make sure they still have their wallets before they leave.

I wish AA was still running the Jays. He’d have Vlad and Bo locked into team friendly deals for the next decade and probably traded scraps for top 10 prospects the last 4 years

There’s no way AA would lock up either Vladdy or Bichette long term. He would have traded both and received a ton of young talent and saved millions.

Need 2 justify his multi million dollar contract. Shrewd, spread it out over 4inns n u start 2see where the value is. Cashman has to have dossier w/photos of Steinbrenner wearing red teddy, only reasonable assumption anymore. Not keeping GM role because of his fine performance orchestrating perennial world beaters w/all the vast resources he’s gifted every offseason. Wish I could make 160Million$ mistake n just keep chugging along @my job when it’s been over decade since u produced any quality work. N Boonie he’s got dossier on Cashman. Go O’s !

I honestly can’t remember a Huge trade Cashman has made that truly worked out. Gallo, Gray, Montas, Effross, Bader. He traded away so many prospects for the wrong players. Stanton, instead of Yelich, was a mistake. Cashman needed to trade for Olson instead of signing the older Rizzo. Cashman would have been better off releasing Sanchez for nothing instead of getting Donaldson. Donaldson 25 Million could have helped the Yankees sign Seager for SS. I also blame Cashman for trades he didn’t make. Getting nothing for Bader and Hicks. Keeping Torres instead of trading him. Can you imagine an infield of Seager, Volpe, Pereza and Olson. That’s impressive. Getting rid of Stanton and Torres needs to be a priority this off season.
