The Opener: Mets, Padres, Angels

By Nick Deeds | October 2, 2023 at 8:00am CDT

With the 2023 regular season now officially in the rearview mirror, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:

1. Mets to announce Stearns:

In a statement yesterday regarding the departure of manager Buck Showalter, Mets owner Steve Cohen revealed that he would be made available to the media this afternoon, when he will unveil the club’s new president of baseball operations. It’s been an open secret for weeks that former Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns has agreed to helm New York’s front office, but the press conference could illuminate the decision to fire Showalter, who won 101 games with the club last year en route to the fourth Manager of the Year award in his career, as well as the club’s direction under Stearns headed into 2024.

2. Padres ownership to meet with Preller, Melvin:

The Padres are coming off a disappointing season that saw them miss the postseason while barely scraping through with a winning season with an 82-80 record. Despite the downturn in performance this year, however, it’s been reported that the club’s preference is to retain both president of baseball operations A.J. Preller and manager Bob Melvin for the 2024 campaign. That said, given the widely-reported acrimony that’s developed between the two men, it’s still possible San Diego parts ways with one or both of them in the coming days. Today figures to play a pivotal role in determining the future of leadership of the club. As noted by The Athletic’s Dennis Lin, a meeting between Melvin, Preller, and ownership is expected to take place today.

3. Nevin’s future in Anaheim uncertain:

With the regular season having wrapped up yesterday evening, plenty of personnel are in uncertain situations regarding their respective futures with their current organizations. One such person is Angels manager Phil Nevin, who’s contract with the club expired with the end of the club’s season last night. Nevin was the club’s third base coach entering the 2022 campaign, but took over as manager after the Angels fired Joe Maddon in early June of that year. He’s managed the club ever since, with a record of 119-149 as the club’s manager including this year’s disappointing 73-89 season. As of yesterday afternoon, Nevin’s situation was still uncertain, as he told reporters (including Sam Blum of The Athletic) that he didn’t know whether or not he’d be back as the club’s manager in 2024. Regardless of whether or not Nevin returns, the club could look very different come Spring Training 2024 as superstar Shohei Ohtani heads into free agency for the first time in his career.

I like Buck (met him long ago repping MS State at a SEC Fan Fare in ATL) and he does deserve better, but he took a job while they were searching for a new prez of baseball ops. It’s common that new hires will want to bring in their own people — and NYM has been connected to Stearns forever. None of this is coming out of LF.

Run DMC: I agree. The word “fire” wasn’t really used. I think the Mets thought he was a good manager, but with a new man taking over he wants to hire the guys he thinks will fix Cohen’s admirable attempts to build a winning team with some superstar players. It likely won’t take long for the Mets to right themselves and become a contender again maybe as early as next season. It’ll be interesting to see what Stearns does.

Avenger. Yep. It’s another reason why Perry is gone.

A GM will hire a manager and Perry only has one more year on his contract. Perry hasn’t done enough to keep his job, so it makes sense to let a new GM hire his own manager.

Yep H11f, the Angels GM Perry will get to finally choose his first Manager. Hahaha!

The one thing we Angels fans can happily rejoice in, and certainly expect is, There will be a new Manager and new coaching staff.

Melvin is a chill intelligent dude, Preller seems like a spaz. I didn’t think it would work out and it mostly hasn’t. It wlll be fascinating to see what goes down today

It would be fascinating if the Padres decide to part ways with Preller. Any of the other possible decisions (none or only Melvin out) would be “business as usual”.

Let’s Go DBacks (and I share that sentiment): I hope they keep Melvin. He deserves another shot. His first season didn’t work out but he’s a smart guy with a proven track record. He knows what the team needs to be successful and hopefully Preller will get it for him.

His team quit on him and only started playing when the GM basically handed the reins to his bench coach for the rest of the season. Melvin was too chill. He needed to actually be a manager instead of a sightseer.

So, if you are Ohtani, and you wish to sign with a “winning team”, and alledgedly want to stay on the west coast, what are your options. The Dodgers won their division. Seattle, and San Francisco just missed the playoffs. San Diego was right behind them, but they are cutting payroll. The Angels and Oakland aren’t close. to winning in the future. Do you start considering other areas?

Seattle is most likely the outcome.

They finished 88-74 which would have made tbe playoffs in the NL. So not like they were bad by any means. Just a tough year in the AL.

88-74 would have made the playoffs in 2022 as well.

I think Seattle signs Ohtani and trades and signs Soto to replace Teoscar Hernandez

1 of Bryon Woo or Bryce Miller
      Gabriel Gonzalez
      Tyler Locklear
      Taylor Dollard
      Jimmy Joyce

They have pitching already so no pressure on ohtani to pitch too soon. Just DH.

Ohtani turned down the Ms once before. So he’s going there now when the team has been to the playoffs once in 20 years?

He’s likely going to the Dodgers.

Dodgers have the biggest local TV deal in baseball. So if it is about dollars, they can probably offer the most. If it is about something else, then it is his preference, but given the West Coast preference, I’d say it is either them or the Mariners if he doesn’t stay in Anaheim.

Seattle has a younger core and more financial wiggle room.

Dodgers payroll sat at 210 last season while and have had luxury tax issues. They cut spending from 2022 for that reason.

          Mariners sat at 153 mill.

Dodgers also have a lot more holes to fill than Seattle does during the 2024 off season and beyond.

Seattle also has the ability to cash in prospects to improve the roster. Ala Juan Soto. Dodgers don’t have that luxury. Busch at 2B Cartaya at C if Will Smith leaves, Frasso, Stone fill upcoming vacancies.in rotation. Dodgers are limited on the trade market.

Unless Dodgers want to reenter luxury tax issues and push spending to 260 mill and beyond. They could. But theyd just be dealing with luxury tax issues for many years to come.

Owners do. Because owners don’t want to pay 70 80 90 % in taxes.

Payroll went down from 2022 – 2023 for that exact reason.

I’m sure they don’t. But the Dodgers got under the cap so they could sign Ohtani.

All they have to do is reset the cap, and the Dodgers have so much young talent, that it’s not difficult.

This is a well run organization…..damn it.

Initial luxury tax line for 2024 is 231 mil, 2025 is 241 mill, 244 mill in 2026

Signing Ohtani would blow the Dodgers past the initial luxury tax line with ease. And thats before signing any free agents or giving out extensions to free agents.. They be approaching the 2nd tier for many years.

Based on 2022 numbers here were the penalties.

Exceeding first surcharge level ($20 million above the base tax threshold which is $230 million for 2022): 32% (1st), 42% (second consecutive year), 62% (third or more consecutive year)

Exceeding second surcharge level ($40 million above the base tax threshold): 62.5% (1st), 75% (second consecutive year), 95% (third or more consecutive year)

Exceeding new third surcharge level ($60 million above the base tax threshold): 80% (1st), 90% (second consecutive year), 105% (third or more consecutive year).

Those could have changed but are Dodger owners really prepared to spend the next 3-5 years if not more paying 2nd tier if not 3rd tier tax penalties?

We’ve seen how demanding it is to make Ohtani happy. So any “budget cuts” are non negotiable if you’re signing Ohtani. You’re saying youre prepared to put the best team possible and spend to do so, in addition to paying him a max contract. Not make cuts here and there elsewhere on the roster which produces a lesser product on the field.

@Halo – I’ve got to agree. I doubt the Dodgers give a flying **** about payroll. With Ohtani, they’ll recover the $50m in merchandise alone.

Last month I went to Anaheim and saw the Angels play. Ohtani was (just) injured. Crowd was listed at 29K, seemed more like 20K. At least 25% were Japanese. Virtually all of them had bought Ohtani merch. Ohtani shirts sold more than any other player in MLB…

You can see where I’m going with this, but I calculate that Ohtani brought in $30 – $40 million in store alone. God knows online.

What p*ssed me off that there was chaos at the Artic, with lots of Japanese just trying to get back to hotels. An Ohtani bus just seeing these guys home, who have travelled a continent would have cost pennies on the merchandise…

The potential in Anaheim is bloody huge. It’s a decent ball park, food & beer is relatively cheap, and our tickets were old school bleachers for $9 each.

I’m gutted for the Angels that they caught a unicorn and dropped it 5 years later….

Its a bit more than 85 mill

They pick up the club options its 136.5 mill. If they dont they need to replace Lynn, Muncy, Kelly, Hudson,

And that number doesn’t include arb salaries for May, Lux, Almonte, Ferguson, Vesia, Phillips, Feireisen, Phillips, Gaterol, Will Smith, Walker Buehler,

They also need to either resign or replace Martinez, Peralta, Heyward

So 85 mill isn’t exactly 85 mill man.

Went to baseball reference. There is plenty of room.

They replace Martinez with Ohtani and if your concerned with the cost of replacing Petalta or Heyward, you really are not thinking clearly

Bottom line, money will not come close to preventing Ohtani from signing with the Dodgers.

Take a poll of 100 random Mariners fans who have followed the team longer than a season or two and ask them if they envision ownership signing off on two long-term deals of ~$35M EACH to sign Soto and Ohtani.

The options in the survey, besides Yes and No as responses, can also include LOL. Seattle ownership is not going to commit to that kind of expenditure.

Aragon: The Dodgers didn’t spend much, if any, money on FAs this past off-season because they were saving their pennies to make a run at Ohtani. Then they realized they weren’t running away with the division and started adding players. They started off playing for 2924, then 2023. I think they will land Ohtani, although I’d like to see him in Seattle or SF, who seem to have the money after what they offered Judge and Correa.

I’d give the Preller Melvin 1 more shot. They finished September strong.

Off-season has to start with moving Soto for best deal possible and getting back a young OF and young SP. Idk if mlbtr has projected his arb salary yet but I’d guess it’s in the 30 mill range. Funds can be put to better use elsewhere on the roster. I’d bring back profar to play LF.

If they trade Soto extending Kim should happen immediately. But if an extension doesn’t seem likely or he wants too much padres should trade him to maximize the value during the off season. If they trade Kim Cronenworth moved back to 2B and they either resign Cooper or sign a free agent 1B or trade for one.

I’d also trade Jackson Merrill for a long term starting pitcher. He’s blocked at 3B, 2B, SS for the foreseeable future. Could play him in the OF maybe but feel like pitching is more necessary currently.

Darvish Musgrove are #1 and 2. Wacha is #3. I’d honestly trade Wacha and move his salary too if Padres are intemt of cutting operation costs. I think Waldron and Avila did enough to be given shots at the rotation next year to work as the 4 and 5 starter.

Not bad overall but a few point to differ:

Wacha – padres have an option a 16 mil. If they exercise it theh actually have to exercise both years at once so it’s 2/32. If they don’t, he has a player option but it is too low to consider he will go that route. So the trade wacha or pencil him at 3 isn’t currently feasible. Personally, I think both sides would benefit from a 3/39 deal.

      Profar – no thanks.

Trade Merrill – not with Bog’s production at SS this year and considering Manny and Bog will likely age of current positions in a couple of years. So, Kim could take SS this year and Merrill get more seasoned. bog could be shifted to 2b or 1b with Cron the other.

Waldron and Avila – not 4 and 5 but 5/6 or long relief for Avila, I’d go with that for an hope.

I’m good with an extension of Kim for reasons stated above. Can’t trade him for his value in 24 in Ky opinion so if he nets a QO offer and walks then so be it.

Resign Cooper – good with that.

Also have to consider resigning Sanchez unless you want Sullivan for back up to Campy which wouldn’t be bother me going into ST but I don’t have faith I’d be happy coming out – surprise me though.

Need 1 more for sure SP – Nola, Yamamoto, Montgomery.

Lee is the bet for OF if you trade Soto or move Grish to 4th or non-tender. I’m open to all of those but you have to complete the project so you end up with a complete OF. I’m afraid the non-tender timeline on Grish might create a wrinkle because it may require a decision before you can work the rest of the problem.

I think Profar is a good utility option and could handle LF in the interim if they don’t find someone. I think they find someone. So Profar would be a LF, RF, 2B, 1B, DH player.

Bogaerts played fine at ss. But a move to 2B wouldnt be the worst decision with Kim on an extension moving to SS. I dont see them moving Bogaerts or Machado to 1B any time soon. Cronenworth probably goes to LF if they trade Soto and they resign Cooper.

Lee would make a ton of sense as a long term answer in the OF to replace Soto.

        Resigning Sanchez makes sense.

Idk if Padres have $$$ to sign Nola or Montgomery. Yamamoto makes sense. They could definitely dive into NPB looking for SP. They’ve had success bringing Suarez and Martinez back over. And Pierce Johnson all those years. Shota Imanaga, Kona Takahashi, Naoyuki Uwasawa.

Ironically there is a very recent interview with Bog about a move that brings up 2b and 1b on Inside Padres Nation – I’m on a phone so don’t expect a link – bog actually didn’t sound too keen on 1b but he brought up CF in the interview.

I agree with some of the moves, but I think what a wrench in their last offseason the signing of another shortstop was, they didn’t need him, there was no place in the batting order for him. Padres had a solid nine last season. Would have been better off looking for more pitching then. Now trading Soto is the key, only team I could see him going to would be Yankees right now, but do they have enough pitching prospects. Can’t really see anyone else willing to pay a salary that Soto is going to request.

Mariners. I think they trade for Soto, sign him to an extension, and sign Ohtani personally. They have enough pitching and enough prospects to get a deal done. Plus cap room to sign both. They’ve got a few long term pieces just barely hitting arb. If I was Dipoto I’d front load Ohtani and Soto deals so when time comes to pay the core, they have funds available.

There are tax penalties associated with blowing past the tax line. Spend as much as you want. But I doubt owners like playing tax penalties. More you go past steeper the tax bill is.

The Angels will be an embarrassment of a franchise until Moreno sells the team. To have Trout and Ohtani on your team in their primes and make the playoffs once in like 10 years is a complete travesty. Any team that misses the playoffs that much should be able to build up a farm system and develop talent.

A team that built a farm wouldn’t miss the playoffs for a decade.

We’ll need 3-4 years after Arte sells to have one.

It took a lot of effort for them to bad that long too. It also kind of proves my point. They didn’t even start getting close to making the playoffs or building up the farm system until after Nintendo sold the team.

I agree the Angels need to move on from Moreno to succeed in the future, but people always stating it’s a travesty they didn’t win having Trout and Ohtani for years, in their prime, gets old. Ohtani was injured his first two years, and Trout for the past three. They lost because of injuries (all teams have them), lack of quality pitching, and non performing free agents, I.e. Pujols, Upton, Rendon, Fowler, etc.

Yes, but they’ve all lost because behind the sexy baubles of Trout, Ohtani, Pujols, etc Arte has invested absolutely nothing behind the scenes.

For three years they’ve been waiting for their ST site to be repaired/updated. They have NO drive time tech to analise pitchers/hitters.

They underpay pretty much everyone in their MiLB coaching, the result being, they don’t get the best coaches. Consequently, the good prospects don’t develop, with about one obvious exception.

In Arte’s case it is the King’s new clothes. If you remember the fairytale.

And it must be maddening as an Angel’s fan, seeing a successful skilled billionaire not investing properly at the grass roots.

Any chance the crap ST site is in any part for their litany of injuries?

Nevin is really the canary in the coal mine as to the direction of the franchise now. He likely won’t want to be part of a rebuild, so if he goes because of that then we’ll know really soon that they won’t try to re-sign Ohtani. Minasian was recently quoted saying respect from players is one of his top qualities in a manager and Nevin completely has that.

It’s a good article, but one thing you missed is the great bullpen and Scot Shields.

It’s why I have been so focused on the incompetence of this current regime and the complete cluelessness regarding the pen.

I don’t believe firing Minasian and bringing in a new manager is the solution.
Since 2011, the Angels have had 3 General Managers and 4 Managers, and haven’t had a winning season in the last eight years.

They need to reevaluate organizational philosophies & operations beginning at the top..

It may not be the solution but these two are adequate at best. This organization needs a lot more than adequate to compete.

And I think calling them adequate is pretty nice.

This team needs a talented team President who can clean house and bring in his own people.

If Melvin is out in SD…would love to see Ron Washington get a chance with the Padres.

Melvin seem to lean very player friendly, which seemed to work good with a young team…but a team with big contracts/egos like SD has…Melvin didn’t seem to align. A great deal of 1 run losses this year also is partial reflection of in game management skills…which wasn’t too good this year. Should Melvin have used Hader vs Harper in last year’s do or die game in the playoffs? Who knows? It just seems like he leaves some things to be desired to be considered a great manager.

Washington is around a team with big name players that knows how to make all of them gel, knows also how to get young players to step up (from his Rangers days) and seems like he’s ripe for another manager role.

See who gets shaken out in SD first.

    Here’s my Padres take:

Melvin looked like a man who was done with the organization yesterday. I get it, Preller is a guy who walks, talks and puts on a persona that he is the man, but what are his results? Melvin didn’t have the type of control of the day to day like he should have, Preller meddled too much.

I think Melvin is gone either by his own accord or by Peter. As a result, Preller will be fired.

Buck would be a terrible fit! Especially after his nonsense in the postseason last year with Musgrove’s ear. Nevin isn’t even a consideration, he’d get eaten a live. He couldn’t manage a club house with 2 superstars, how would he handle a clubhouse full of prima-donna’s? I have a felling Melvin to SF and Kapler to SD. I am most like wrong on everything I’ve said, but I am making these predictions from my recliner.

    As far as roster moves:

Keep Copper, Profar and definitely extend Kim ASAP. Let go Grish, Crap and Choi. Unfortunately, Carp will return and be a hole in the roster.

Lugo and Wacha would be great to keep but I agree that Waldron and Avila should great stuff and earned a chance to make a run at the 5 (Waldron) and 6 (Avila) spot.

Soto gone! The guy is a beast but not worth the Brinks semi-truck of money he’s going to get from the Yankees after arbitration. The return you can get from him is going to be huge! SP and OF is what is needed!

Merrill is worth kicking the tires on a trade. Will they do it, depends on who the GM is going forward.

It will be an interesting week for the Padres going forward! Hopefully they can get it sorted out and Fair better than 2 games over .500 with a $200mill payroll.

I am the outcast here…. I’d like to see Nevin stay as well as Minasian. This constant flow of people in and out, the changing of ideas every year, the constant change of people on the field and just no consistency. Someone above stated that the Angel’s farm system would need 3-4 years to rebuild after Arte sells the team. Well I think the same could be said about a new GM and coach who walk in and inherit the mess that they did. As far as the team this year… their were more reasons for the Angel’s losing than Nevin could ever be responsible for. Replacing him doesn’t fix the problem.

And not one of them has had a good season. It’s that kind of evaluation that puts this team behind the 8 ball.

Drury. Had a fWAR of 2.5. Hardly a difference maker. And by far the best of the list.

Moniak had a 35% KRate and less than a 3 percent walk rate. No way can he be counted on.

Schanuel squares the ball, doesn’t hit it hard, doesn’t lift the ball and has a 330 slugging pct. Are you expecting him to completely change his swing? That’s the only way power will come, but at what cost?

Not one of those guys are expected to be top ten player at there position, and most won’t crack the top 20.

Joyce is good because he can hit 101? What good is that when you have no command? Even at AA he had a 22 percent Ground Ball rate and walked 7.5 per nine. Do you think he’s magically going to figure it out?

          Bachman? Seriously?

It’s this kind of wishful thinking that keeps damning this team.

Over valuing those guys is the only way people can like Perry, and you are clearly over evaluating them.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say they will further develop physically and as baseball players elevating their games beyond what they accomplished their first 50 ABs or 20 IP. Why not extend them the same grace you alloted Adell when he was 21 years old?

What with the hyperbole? I think O’Hoppe will be a borderline All Star. Neto will be a solid big league player. Schanuel a useful firstbaseman.
Silseth a back end of the rotation starter.

The fact is, Perry did little to help this team win, and I think it’s foolish to let him keep pushing the wrong buttons based on the low ceiling players he brought in.

When you resort to spewing hyperbole, you’ve basically conceded my point.

Any team dealing with a Bally’s RSN is not likely to be spending much because they can’t count on that cash given the whole bankrupt situation. To expect MLB HQ in NYC to have the brains to rectify that before 2024 is expecting a lot. So expect the spending to be centered around the large markets with big local TV deals more than ever before. We may even see the MLBPA crying collusion before its done with a lot of vets going unsigned until spring training if they are signed at all.
