Giants Interested In Matt Chapman

By Darragh McDonald | November 17, 2023 at 10:15am CDT

The Giants are interested in free agent Matt Chapman, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post, though he adds that the Blue Jays “are making a big push to keep” the third baseman.

Chapman, 31 in April, has been a speculative fit for the Giants this offseason for a few reasons. For one thing, the club’s new manager Bob Melvin was the skipper in Oakland while Chapman was there. Beyond that, it’s widely believed that the Giants are planning to add a star player or two this winter after just missing on Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa a year ago.

The Giants have also had some question marks around their defense in recent years, which happens to be Chapman’s specialty. After winning 107 games in 2021, the club fell to .500 in 2022, with glovework seeming to play a role in that. The club was collectively graded as being worth -53 Defensive Runs Saved that year, the worst mark in the majors, while their tally of -33 Outs Above Average was third worst. In 2023, they got the OAA into the top 10 but their DRS was still in the bottom third, which perhaps helped contribute to another underwhelming season.

Chapman has been one of the best defensive third basemen in the league during his career, having current counts of 92 DRS and 53 OAA since his 2017 debut. The former number is tops in the majors during that time frame while the latter number is second only to Nolan Arenado.

His bat has been a bit less consistent, particularly in 2023. He finished the season with a batting line of .240/.330/.424 and a wRC+ of 110, though in fairly uneven fashion, having high highs and low lows throughout the year. Some have framed his year as a scorching hot April followed by five tepid months, but Chapman was also quite strong in July, hitting .247/.402/.506 that month for a wRC+ of 154.

On August 13, when Chapman hurt his finger in a weight room incident, he was slashing .255/.346/.449 on the year for a wRC+ of 121, which was fairly in line with his 118 wRC+ from the year before. He tried playing through the finger issue, even going on the injured list for a time, but hit just .163/.250/.302 the rest of the way, diminishing his full season production.

Blaming the injury might be a charitable way to look at things but it stands to reason that the club that signs Chapman is probably going to be one that looks on him favorably and is more willing to overlook the final weeks of the 2023 campaign. His 28.4% strikeout rate for the year gives some pause but optimists can look to his 10.7% walk rate and bloody Statcast metrics. MLBTR predicted Chapman to get a contract of six years and $150MM.

The Giants used J.D. Davis as their primary third baseman in 2023 and he can be retained for one more season via arbitration, with MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projecting a salary of $6.8MM in 2024. He had a fine season, hitting 18 home runs and slashing .248/.325/.413 for a wRC+ of 104. Hitting has always been his forte, with his defense more questionable. DRS continued to frown on him in 2023, giving him a grade of -11 for the year, pushing his career mark to -38. OAA gave him a +5 on the year but his career tally is still just -7.

Davis is a perfectly serviceable player at the hot corner but Chapman would clearly be an upgrade. If the Giants were able to get a deal done with Chapman, Davis would still have a bit of trade value given his modest salary, perhaps allowing the Giants to put him on the market and bolster their roster elsewhere.

Fitting Chapman onto the Jays’ roster is perhaps an easier fit, since he could just slot back into his old spot. The Jays are known to be looking for multiple position players in order to upgrade their lineup this winter, which could include a Chapman reunion. The club already offered him an extension at some point, though Chapman turned it down. But they are also looking into Shohei Ohtani, Cody Bellinger, Jeimer Candelario and others. Candelario, in particular, would likely be a backup plan for the event that they don’t retain Chapman. Candelario is also a third baseman but doesn’t have the same track record as Chapman, thus leading to a lesser contract projection of four years and $70MM.

As mentioned, the Giants are clearly looking for a significant upgrade this winter, having been connected to big names like Ohtani, Bellinger, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and others. Chapman is on the list as well but they figure to be competing with the Jays and other clubs for many of the same targets.

Both clubs seem to have some powder dry for such pursuits. Roster Resource currently pegs the Giants’ payroll at $147MM next year. They have been in the $200MM range in the past, giving them plenty of room to work with. If their desire for star player additions this winter is as strong as suspected, perhaps they are willing to push that and therefore have even more room. The Jays are at $205MM for next year, per RR, but with a larger arbitration class and a few non-tenders could give them some more breathing space. Their competitive balance tax calculation is currently estimated at $216MM, with next year’s base threshold at $237MM. The Jays were willing to pay the tax last year club president/CEO Mark Shapiro has suggested the payroll situation should be in roughly similar range to 2023.

Oh yeah great idea, for a team that hit 28th in the league for batting average, let’s go and get a guy who hit .240 hitter in a hitters ballpark.

Actually I think the Skydome is now a neutral ball park. Its only been 1 year since they moved the walls but offense was bad. This could also be because Toronto was just bad offensively, I guess the sample is too small.

Pretty clear that the Roger Center suppressed offense. The Jays were better offensively on the road.

But I am not a fan of resigning Chapman. He has a lot of holes in his swing, and 3B don’t tend to age well. The backend of a 6 year deal could look bad. As well, the Jays have a bunch of good 3B prospects. I’d be happier with an interim solution that might allow the a prospect to earn the job mid season.

Agreed. Giving Chapman a 6 year 150 million deal or anything close to it would be a mistake. Pitchers had their way with him most of the season.

Not much available on 3B market, but his defense still plays and will really help the pitching. Bonus points for bringing a Bay Area fixture back.

Chapman would be a disastrous signing for the Giants and an expensive one. His glove’s just not worth it. Plus the Giants have two prominent prospects to play 3b—Schmitt and Fitzgerald. And Davis’ glove was almost Gold through half the season despite the defensive ratings.

A lot of people predicted this- it’s kinda funny how some players ‘fit’ some teams so clearly, for better or worse, that it’s almost a foregone conclusion that they’ll sign with that club and that club will go after them in free agency.

I wonder why that is. The intuitiveness of baseball is fascinating.

It’s just years of following the game as intently as a lot of us do. Like when we can guess the outcome of an at-bat sometimes. It’s just gut instinct with years of watching the game.

Yeah I guess teams tend to go for a type in players and players tend to go for a type with teams (if they have options) and so the coupling of players and teams is somewhat predictable in terms of compatibility.

Chapman offers much needed infield defense. His defense would take pressure off Luciano.

Schmitt could fill utility role at 3B, SS & 2B until he’s ready for an everyday position.

    Davis could become trade bait.

Schmitt’s defensive upside is way too good for a utility role. He ended the season with similar numbers to Crawford’s first year, and the team needs to take him seriously/stop playing him out of position.

Agree Supreme, Schmitt has gold glove potential at 3B. His bat looked fabulous for a couple of weeks, then he got fooled by breaking stuff out of the zone. But I think some work with Pat Burrell could get him hitting again. I don’t want Chapman! He’s on the wrong side of the age slide. Play Casey! He’s ours and he’s cheap!

JD Davis was better before he injured his ankle in that slide. He was terrible after but maybe he’s finally healed. Casey and JD have 3B covered!

Agree with all your points but have the feeling they do get Chapman. Not gonna change my fandom. There are many scenarios that can make this team better, and Farhan needs to explore them all. He needs to have plan B, C, & D this time.

Totally agreed with everything you said, gooch. Free agency is a bandaid that is not going to fix this team- sorry to say, not even Ohtani. This team *needs* to invest time into their young talent, and try to develop them at a Major League level. If we don’t, it shows we have zero confidence in drafting well, and also shows what we’ve continued to see- that Farhan has some major whiffs on the FA market.

Invest in the young guys, develop them, give them time to play.

The jury is still out on Schmitt, but I’m not at all that optimistic. I love what I’ve seen of the glove. But, short of that small sample tear he went on, I don’t really like anything that I’ve seen from his bat. So far he has terrible pitch ID skills. I’m not crazy about his bat to ball contact skills either, nor his overly aggressive approach. I don’t even like the way he sets up in the batter’s box.

He might have similar numbers to Crawford in his first season, but those aren’t good enough for 3B. If Schmitt played SS those numbers would be more palatable. But right now a bench/utility guy is all I see.

Hi Jean, Schmitt is still relatively young and only had a large cup of coffee with the big league club last season. I’m not saying he doesn’t have issues, but I would give him more time before you throw dirt on him. Giants brought up a lot of kids, some of them maybe too soon, just to get a look at them. Casey might just need more seasoning. He could be Chapman himself, but a hell of a lot cheaper

Like I said the jury’s still out, so I’m not ready to give up on him yet. I just see too many red flags to be optimistic. Seems to me pitchers figured out they could get him out without having to throw anything in the strike zone. I saw him K a few times without a single strike being thrown. Maybe he needs more seasoning in the minors. The major leagues are where players need to produce, and he didn’t.

I’m not big on them signing Chapman. The Longoria experience makes me shy away from a 6 year deal for a guy the same age as Longo was when he was acquired, and that deal had 1 less year attached. I’d rather they go with Davis and use the money elsewhere.

Chapman gets a lot of hate but he hit about 25 balls 400+ feet that were caught at the wall as he only hits it to right center.. Aside from the swing and miss I personally think he is a bit better than the offensive numbers show. Probably closer to his career numbers (117 OPS+). As a Jays fan I would be happy to have him back, and obviously it depends on the length, but I would rather him than Candelario even if he is pricier.

Wow, hyperbole much? The Baseball Savant web site compares a players hr numbers to what thos numbers would be in other parks. Looking at the last 3 seasons, Chapman has 71 hrs. Savant says he would have hit 86 in Oracle in those 3 yrs. 2 yrs in Toronto and 1 in Oakland seem to restrict hrs worse than 3 years in Oracle. Again, 71 vs 86. But hell, why use facts when hyperbole suits your whining.

Does that stat take into account the air density at that point in time for Oracle Park or does it just look at distance?

Oracle is a place where home runs go to die, it rates (last time I looked) at 75 on Park Factors for home runs. If you’re hitting 17 HR’s in the AL east in those HR friendly parks, you’re not going to hit close to that at Oracle.

But it’s not home runs that concern me. Giants ranked 28th (!!!) for batting average last year and they are supposedly looking at a .240 hitter. SF needs better hitting.

Also, Davis was having a fine year until he was hurt in June. That injury wasn’t announced and he tried to play through it. His numbers before that were great; after awful. Davis is fine for one more year. If he has a good year give him a QO or let him walk.

I’m no scout but I’ve seen a lot of Chapman’s games in TV and he appears to be the start of a decline. Still capable of going in a streak as a hitter but also prone to prolonged slump. Generally provides elite defense, but there’s no way elite D at the hot corner coupled with a hitter who can go on long stretches of well below average productivity is worth 6 for 150. I don’t think he’s worth close to 25 now and he certainly won’t be in 4,5,6 years. 6 for 90 would seem more sensible. 4 or 5 for 70-75 would be fair to both parties. So he’ll probably go for 7 and 175 lol. It’s insane.

Typical nonsense from Heyman.., this is his ‘source’

“New manager Bob Melvin and Chapman were together across the bay, in Oakland.”

Chapman is a Boras client no? There’s the answer if so. Heyman is a Boras mouthpiece.

I really wish the Jays would not go full throttle after Chapman. I respect him, his defence and his professionalism. But, the Jays need more offense there and he was horrible for 5/6 months at that position. I would much rather they grabbed Turner (RH) and platoon him with Barger (LH) at the position and then in 25, if he is successful, turn the position to Barger full time. If not, then Orelvis Martinez or Leonardo Jimenez would be ready as well. Would much rather see the Jays money go to signing Soler as full time DH role similar to Belt and perhaps trading for Kepler for the LF position or sign Brantley as part time DH/LF. The Jays need offense badly and Chapman just does not move that needle forward there. The Turner/Barger pairing would offer much improved offense vs a step down defensively.

I like this idea well enough. If Barger isn’t ready/able though? Is Turner capable of more than part time duty at 3B? They have Palmegiani too who looks ready with the bat but I don’t know about the glove. I like Urshela as a gatekeeper to the position because Urshela could move around the diamond if Barger sticks.

Chappy strikes out way too much, but he is the best defensive third baseman in the world.

Someone take him so that Atkins doesn’t circle back to try and sign him. He’s going to regress even further.

Hard pass if Matt Chapman is gonna ask for more than $120 million.

I would love that glove on 3B, but the hitting isn’t there anymore, it seems, and not worth that much money.

I’d rather bank on Matt Williams improving JD Davis’ defense at third than signing Chapman for that huge amount.

SF could sign Matt Chapman to play 3rd and JD Davis move to 1st and LaMonte Wade Jr. return to the outfield?

That’s an awful lot of cheddar to dish out for a defensive specialist in decline

Signing Chapman feels like it would be Evan Longoria all over again. A few hot stretches but older and an injury prone 4-5 years for over $100 mil just to sign a name.

It’s an interesting class. Bellinger feels super risky because of the terrible batted ball metrics despite good results, and Chapman is the opposite as he had terrible results despite off the charts batted ball metrics. So much swing and miss for a guy who does have a good enough plate approach though. I don’t know how you get to the upside if he can’t make contact. Defensive reputations are so sticky that he’ll get paid for the glove despite it being more good than the previous elite standard he set for himself.

These high price players will just use SF as leverage for other teams to offer them a bigger contract, KNOWING, they have no intentions of even coming to SF to play. No one wants to come to SF, because of all the Regulations, Homeless and Taxes they have to pay here.

LOL tell that to Carlos Correa, who, if not for a failed physical, would have been a Giant.

Also tell that to Michael Conforto, who could have left but stayed. Same goes with Joc Pederson, Ross Stripling, Sean Manaea, Taylor Rogers, and Mitch Haniger, who happily took the Giants money, despite your claims of regulations, homelessness, and taxes.

Heck, Bob Melvin left a beautiful city in San Diego, and said goodbye to a more talented, more ready to win now team in the Padres, to manage San Francisco. Seems like taxes, homelessness and regulations didn’t sway his decision either, eh?

So sure, keep pretending that those non-baseball related things are factors for these free agents, and you’re going to look stupid every time.

Every major city has massive issues of these natures and the ultra wealthy are typically well insulated from it no matter where they are and ball players have to pay their fair share of taxes no matter where their home team plays, because of the 50% of games played on the road, in other states, with other taxes.

With maybe the exceptions of preferring weather or location related to family etc. and also levels of media coverage, player experiences aren’t related to the conditions of the city/state the team is housed within- like Greinke and Trout, etc. not wanting to play on higher profile clubs.

Wow KHE, that’s such an insightful post! It’s so unique! I’ve never heard it before! Bravo! Lol. Did you read that on Twitter? I live in SF, it’s a great city and gorgeous, I love it. Stop repeating the same pablum and come visit before you slam it again.

As A Jay’s fan take him. He’s still excellent defensively but his offense is meh. He has a good eye the problem is his bat isn’t fast enough to hit the heat.

Avoiding the “not quite a superstar on a long superstar contract” has been a strength. So it’s Ohtani or Bellinger or stick with the position player youth for me. My fear is that they will cave under the weight of all the fan tears and end up doing something long term and sub optimal in a poor market.

I think Casey schimt already is at Chapmens level defensively they don’t need to pay for him. Spend on Ohtani and snell
