Matt Chapman Turned Down Prior Extension Offer From Blue Jays

By Mark Polishuk | November 14, 2023 at 10:15am CDT

The Blue Jays made an attempt at extending Matt Chapman before he reached free agency, TSN’s Scott Mitchell reports, but Chapman rejected Toronto’s offer.  It isn’t known exactly when the Jays made the offer or how much was on the table, though Mitchell indicates that Chapman passed on more than $100MM over the span of a four- or five-year contract.

This is notably less than the six-year, $150MM deal that MLB Trade Rumors is predicting for Chapman, who ranked seventh on our list of the winter’s top 50 free agents.  With Shohei Ohtani as a DH-only player, Cody Bellinger (ranked #2) and Chapman are the only true position players ranked within the top 11 on MLBTR’s list, amidst a free agent class that is heavy on pitching.

The relative lack of position-player depth on the market is to Chapman’s benefit after something of a shaky season.  Chapman generated 3.5 fWAR largely on the strength another outstanding defensive performance, as Chapman earned the fourth Gold Glove of his career.  His .240/.330/.424 slash line and 17 homers over 581 plate appearances resulted in an above-average 110 wRC+, though Chapman struggled badly at the plate after winning AL Player Of The Month honors in April, and a finger injury later in the season contributed in part to those struggles.

However, Chapman’s hard-contact numbers were among the best of any player in baseball.  This has been a trend throughout much of Chapman’s career, and 2023 also continued his track record of above-average walk rates and a lot of strikeouts.  Since Chapman was on a hot streak at the plate in July and early August, agent Scott Boras will surely point to the finger injury as the major culprit for the offensive downturn, arguing that a healthy Chapman will post better numbers going forward….and thus be worthy of a heftier contract.

It is relatively rare to see top-tier free agents like Chapman accept extension offers so close to free agency, and very rare to see a Boras client pass up a chance at testing the open market.  Mitchell feels that the Blue Jays might still be candidates to re-sign Chapman, but perhaps only in a situation where Chapman circles back if he can’t find a larger deal, rather than a case of the Jays increasing their offer.

Since Chapman will almost surely reject the one-year, $20.325MM qualifying offer before today’s deadline, the Blue Jays stand to recoup an extra draft pick if Chapman signs elsewhere.  This compensatory pick would fall between the fourth and fifth rounds of the 2024 draft, since Toronto surpassed the luxury tax threshold in 2023.  The Jays are looking for multiple position players whether or not Chapman returns, though obviously retaining the third baseman would address one major hole in the lineup.

Chapman is going to reunite with Melvin in San Fran.
They will whiff yet again on the big name FA. They will go hard but I just don’t see any of the big name guys going there unless they are overpaying & they won’t do that

Chapman had one great 4 week stretch at the beginning of the season. It was most of his offense this year. Hopefully he rebounds at the plate. I would have a tough time giving him $150m

          Red and Sox,
Chapman is a GREAT glove at third and can provide right handed pop even if he’s inconsistent since his hip injury. I envisioned a deal at less than what he apparently turned down. I want Devers off third. We need to see what the team looks like in March but if Devers, Yoshida and Duran are all starters in the field, this team will not improve. No one talks about the extra innings the worst defense in baseball caused the staff to throw in 23.

I wouldn’t hate Chapman going to the Giants. It would be an overpay, even by free agent standards, but he would anchor the infield defense and reduce their over reliance on platoons.

This would be a boon for two reasons: their grounder-heavy pitching staff would benefit from his glove, and this enables them to cash in on the likes of JD Davis and Wilmer Flores on the trade market— a trade market that might flourish due to the shallow free agent market in general. Also, such a trade(s) would free up some roster space for a full-time DH like JD Martinez, Rhys Hoskins, etc.

Again, it would be a steep price to pay and not the big splash Giants fans want, but Chapman is a good fit for their roster from top to bottom. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it.

Cainer18–we have Schmitt who is potentially a gold glove defender at 3B, and yes he is swinging too much at breaking pitches but I’d rather give Casey the job than sign Chapman to do basically the same thing for a ton of money when Casey is our own prospect and cheap.

agnes gooch: I agree that he’s got the chops to win a gold glove. I’m not holding my breath on his bat after so many brutal months, but I maintain optimism that he’ll figure it out. If the Giants manage to scoop a marquee free agent or two, Chapman would be an immediate solution to make a push to contend in 2024 — but if they miss on the Ohtanis, Yamamotos, and Bellingers et al, I’d rather they make modest additions and give Schmitt, Luciano, Harrison, Matos, and even Heliot Ramos a ton of runway.

        Spend a season watching him.

        You’ll love his defence.

His offensive skills will make you barf. Matt had 17 home runs last year and 10 were with the sacks empty. With runners in scoring position he hit .217. With the bases loaded he hit .077.

Very intense guy who tries really hard in a get it done league.

        So excited he’s gone.

It’ll be exciting watching the Giants drive the price up for any team on Ohtani. Any team that lands him other than the Giants, they are going to pay. Probably pretty much the same for Bellinger too.

Chapman is a nice player but I have a hard time seeing him worth 20 million a season. Maybe if he’d be willing to change his approach the way Bellinger did and sacrifice exit velocity for more consistent contact.

At some point, GMs and PBOs will stop caring about how loud the outs a player makes are and start caring more about putting the ball in play with two strikes.

I am just using Varsho as a comp in terms of everybody hating on Chapman this year due to his extended struggles at the plate. He is still an above average hitter and gets way more flack than worse hitters on the team while giving elite defense. We have to see what he gets, but many Jays fans simply “dont want him back”, I find it silly. Vlad was about half as good as Chapman while making more money.

His defense is good but he’s aging and 3B is not as important defensively as say Catcher, Shortstop or Centerfield. I stand by saying Javier Baez level bust.

It really does seem like he’s most likely SF bound and as if he is going to become a bloated overlong contract for them and the Blue Jays’ offer was extremely fair and an accurate valuation in years and dollars.

Heck, he might get SF to give him 6 years/$160M or something like that- and he is worth exactly 4 years/$100M- it would have been a very fair deal if he’d accepted Toronto’s offer, assuming it was accurate.

Oh well- enjoy lucratively relative irrelevancy in San Francisco, Matt Chapman!

    Let him walk, Blue Jays.

They might need to trade for a 3B. If the Jays were willing to trade the best catching prospect and a solid but unspectacular outfielder for the most overvalued outfielder in recent history, the Jays should theoretically be willing to trade Tiedemann if they want to win the World Series.

That goes for Orelvis and Barger too. Jays did not give them enough defensive innings at 3B to prepare them.

Chapman is an interesting study in value, and it is probably variable by team. On one hand, he is the best defensive 3B in MLB. His range and accuracy and arm strength is superior. His presence and ability to range widely to his left and get to balls that would have been fielded by Bichette actually made Bichette a better fielder than he has been. For the last 4-5 years the only player better defensively than Chapman has been Arenado, until this year where you can now see Arenado starting his decline, which is why he wasn’t even in the top 3 for GG in the NL. On the flip side of that, Chapman was quite bad at the plate for 5 of 6 months in the season. He was spectacular in the first month, which drives up his numbers for the year, but take that month away and he was one of the worse hitters in the AL. Could it have been the finger injury causing it? Maybe, but you better believe that Boras is going to push that narrative whether it was or not. I am not one to praise our FO for anything, but, that was a nice trade they made and I have enjoyed watching Chapman post every day, dinged up or not, and watch the clinic he put on there defensively. That being said, I just would invest heavily in him long term. I think the Jays would be better off with getting Turner on a 1yr contract and platooning him at 3B with Barger and see how Barger develops. Barger was hurt most of the year and his metrics look skewed but he and Turner together will far outperform Chapman offensively. And, no matter who we get or put there, the Jays will take a step down defensively at that position.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in 2023 offensive numbers. All Jays numbers were down and especially at Rogers Center. I heard during a game that they suspected the way balls were being stored before the games. Of course that could be why the Jays pitching was so good…minus Monoah.
