The Mariners have long been considered a candidate to pursue Shohei Ohtani this winter, yet chances may be slim that the reigning AL MVP will head to the Northwest. According to MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer, “industry sources” say “that landing Ohtani doesn’t appear to be within the Mariners’ realistic agenda this offseason.”
Why this is the case isn’t specified, or whether or not this might represent a shift in the Mariners’ thinking after having some early talks with Ohtani and his representation. Kramer cites some possible reasons, several related to the record-setting price tag that Ohtani is expected to land this winter. It could be that the M’s are wary about committing what will likely be over $500MM to a single player, even one of Ohtani’s stature and ability.
Seattle hasn’t been exactly shy about payroll in the past few years. After all, the franchise could end up spending $470MM on Julio Rodriguez, and will owe the young star at least $210MM based on the terms of his elaborate contract extension from August 2022. Luis Castillo and J.P. Crawford signed lucrative extensions in their own right, and the Mariners inked Robbie Ray to a $115MM free agent deal in the 2021-22 offseason.
These deals notwithstanding, the Mariners are currently projected for a $143.3MM payroll in 2024, putting the team around the middle of the pack in spending. The $143.3MM figure does represent one of the higher payrolls in franchise history, and adding Ohtani for what could be $50MM in average annual salary would put the M’s into uncharted financial territory for them.
As Kramer notes, splurging on Ohtani might leave little in the budget for the front office to address other needs. Obviously adding Ohtani would be a major way of addressing Seattle’s broad need for lineup help, “yet, it’d also be imprudent to suggest that Ohtani’s bat alone would solve all the Mariners’ problems,” Kramer writes. If president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto did get the green light to boost payroll by $50MM, using that money on multiple players might be a wiser way of upgrading the roster than spending it all on a DH-only player whose pitching future might be somewhat murky after a second major arm surgery.
In theory, an early pivot away from Ohtani might help the Mariners in some other winter pursuits. There has been a ton of speculation and very little fact about exactly how Ohtani and his camp plan to approach his free agency, yet recent reports indicate that Ohtani might pick his next team before the Winter Meetings begin on December 4. Even if Ohtani is planning to leave the market relatively early, that still gives the Mariners a couple of weeks to pursue other free agents or trade options while many of the bigger-spending teams are still tied up waiting for Ohtani’s decision.
Even though there are plenty of other ways for the Mariners to improve the club besides signing Ohtani, there is sure to be some disappointment from Seattle fans that the two-way superstar might not be on the radar. The Mariners had a somewhat quiet offseason last winter, and as Kramer points out, this relative lack of aggression coming off a playoff berth was interpreted by some as a sign that the M’s were financially gearing up to make a big run at Ohtani this year.
The Mariners were one of the seven teams who were the finalists for Ohtani when he first came to the majors from Nippon Professional Baseball during the 2017-18 offseason. With some speculation still existing that Ohtani might prefer teams on the west coast, the Mariners were seen as a natural potential landing spot this time around, especially since Ohtani has spent time in Seattle in past offseasons and stated that “I felt like it’s a very nice city. I really liked it.” As well, the Mariners’ longstanding connection to Ichiro Suzuki (one of Ohtani’s baseball heroes) has made the team a popular destination for Japanese talent, and the thinking was that signing Ohtani would only strengthen that bond for a new generation of fans.
Even if Seattle is out of the picture, Ohtani’s market is still very active. Teams like the Angels, Dodgers, Giants, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Rangers, Cubs, and probably other big-spenders like the Yankees, Mets, Padres, and Phillies have all been linked to Ohtani to varying degrees, so it could be that the Mariners felt they weren’t going to win a bidding war with so many clubs involved. Given how Ohtani’s camp is prioritizing secrecy in negotiations, we might not hear much concrete news about his next destination until a signing is imminent.

The elephant in the room is that the Angels had both Ohtani AND Trout and never made the playoffs. For 90% of MLB teams having only one player making a quarter or more of your payroll is a non starter.
brewsingblue82
@Boxscore that’s definitely the biggest strike against the Angels chances. But a lot of it is because they made horrible choices for who to put around Ohtani and Trout. They were usually in on some of the right people, but never willing to spend high enough on them. And then tended to overspend on the wrong ones. The other problem is they didn’t always draft strong. They had some high prospects that didn’t turn out. But overall they just never put a good team around them.
casorgreener
@Brew think you missed the point..
Oldhalo
@Brew… I disagree. Many of the FA signings were based on proven track records, with a few exceptions. Sure, you can see where player decline would come faster with some than others but that is true of many FA signings. There is always risk without any guarantees. The difference here is proven talent vs unproven talent from the minors. The Angel’s had a great team on paper but when people don’t perform (mainly the pitching staff – there was always enough bats) and a team is decimated by injuries, some of which were freak injuries, you’re simply not going to compete. Many people don’t realize that this team was in contention up and to the trade deadline when 3 of the remaining 4 position starters were injured, leaving the team with only 1 remaining position starter who hadn’t spent significant time on the injured list. It was in that week that hope was truly lost despite Minasian’s best efforts to save it.
Ohtani is extremely talented and any team that lands him will be fortunate. He isn’t just a game changer but he can carry a team through stretches. If you’re a fringe team, right there, you need to get Ohtani. Forget the luxury tax and sign him if you’re that close and you really want a shot at the World Series. I see 5-6 teams that should be all in and the Angel’s aren’t one of them simply because of how bad the pitching appears to be. We need at least 4-5 pitchers, starters and relief combined and that still leaves questions because of the team’s overall position depth.
LLGiants64
Yes. An apparently, they each should rate an article.
pingston
No. This article was entirely viable from a journalistic standpoint. Seattle had been repeatedly mentioned as a potential landing spot for Ohtani, along with the old, unproven chestnut that Ohtani prefers a west coast team. They may well have met with his representation with an NDA to keep quiet about details. So this adds some new information for teams that are seriously mounting bids (though I suspect they got this earlier than this article).
Leaks will occur as the number of realistic sweepstakes winners dwindles. Lending institutions employ baseball fans. So do hotels and airports.
A ‘bully’ starting offer could easily drop the contenders down to 3 or 4… And the pitches made will be interesting to hear post-deal.
Will teams include seasonal accommodation, trips home to Japan, etc.? But gaps in season are short and rare so I don’t see in-season travel back home to be very important — which some have contrived as the reason west coasters have the edge.
good vibes only
I don’t think we’ll hear any detail on the various pitches until many years down the road. It should make for a pretty good story to tell especially if this deal results in a championship or multiple championships for whichever team signs him.

Are there Asian people in every major American metropolitan area? Yes. Are there more on the West Coast? Also yes. Not simply to go home but because the Asian populations are higher in these cities. Comforts from home are abundant.
Does money talk? Yes. But the offers from Eaat coast teams will have to be overwhelming. Thats why ultimately West coast teams have an edge.

I agree. I actually think he’s going to sign for like 4 years $250m and bank on him still having juice in his age 34 season.
That’s more of a Dodger type contract anyway. With Betts and Freddie on the books, they’re not offering Shohei 8-10 years.

I think it is extremely unlikely the maximum length of the deal is less than 10 years even for the Dodgers. There will just be opt outs all over it
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
I think this is a giant nothing burger as they say and it’s easy to drum up this garbage when you know there’s a veil of secrecy around Ohtani’s free agency, while it is also a lightning rod for conversation and can generate buzz by a writer who leaks a story with no teeth.
Considering Ohtani’s agent said he would penalize anyone that shares their meetings with Shohei or leaks anything to the press. I highly doubt Dipoto who is said to being keeping things close to the vest about everything this offseason has already determined if he was going to pursue Ohtani without meeting with him and leaked or allowed someone else to leak to anyone of note from the press corp. that he was in or out on the ex-Angels free agent.
The Story says “Mariners not expected to sign Ohtani” based on the fact that every lazy writer and dumb MLB exec. has him going to the Dodgers?! We already know the press had determined last year he would be a Dodger, based on nothing but conjecture. So how is this story news?!
Is there any part of it where a source says Jerry doesn’t want to pay the cost?! Nope, just speculation regurgitated from the past year and then given a label to make fans feel like this is something new. Notice he said “industry sources” as if Jerry is talking about this with people outside the organization.
Daniel Kramer is a hack of the first order and should be taken with a grain of salt!
Phree4u
I find this article to be the same, especially when the writer goes on to add that teams like the Yankees, Phillies, Mets are, “probably” going to make offers.
The entire article sounds like it was written from within an echo chamber of Podcasters with zero sources but themselves.

Why aren’t the M’s being mentioned with Snell?
He’s a hometown guy and would fit in perfectly there.
Plugnplay
Dave, I got to think the M’s pitching is fine, I believe they’ll be focused more on improving on the hitting side, with the budget they have.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
Except adding Snell who wants to be there, allows the Mariners to trade Gilbert who doesn’t want to be there to a team closer to his Florida home for a player with real offensive upside.
Aaron Sapoznik
Yes. Blake Snell was born and raised in Seattle and continues to call it home. I was seriously contemplating Snell for the Mariners in the MLBTR Prediction Contest but I couldn’t commit to it before the entry deadline with their solid rotation that also includes a 5 yrs/$115M (22-26) contract obligation to fellow veteran southpaw Robby Ray.
I could easily envision Snell signing with his hometown team but that probably needs to be preceded with a rotation deal first. A trade is the likely outcome for a Mariners team looking for offensive upgrades this offseason. I just couldn’t pull the trigger on Snell to Seattle with so many other serious contenders far more desperate for starting pitching.
dbdmack
Far from a team need and low inning pitchers like Snell crush your bullpen. Teo H replacement and another bat will be the priority.
good vibes only
The hometown story is very nice but Blake Snell is going to get way overpaid. When it works (like it did in 2023) it works but dude had a ton of luck to get the results he did with that many walks. I do not want Blake Snell to be the target if we trade from our pitching to get a bat. Should go after Yamamoto at that point or just roll with internal depth in my opinion.

Snell can absolutely repeat his performance from last year in 2024.
2023 wasn’t even that good of a year for him.
It was his third highest FIP and second highest xFIP in the last 6 years.
A team signing him should expect something like 3.5 runs per game and 3.5-4.0 WAR
They should definitely NOT expect a 2.25 ERA.
Of course, teams don’t look at ERA.

Ejemp2006
Snell is not a power pitcher and he doesn’t have devastating stuff. He pitches just well enough to consistently get outs. He walks a lot of batters because he has to nibble at the edges. He has had great managers who have optimized his skills. He has also had very good defenses behind him. Inside an average or below average system, Snell would be Drew Smyly. When he loses a tick on his fastball, people will start teeing off on him like they did on Kluber.
I hope my Tigers don’t use the Cabrera money to sign him.

The Mariners signed Robinson Cano and look what happened.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
Yeah and the Yankees traded for Stanton and look what happened! The Angels signed Pujols and look what happened! The Padres extended Machado and look what happened! The Tigers signed Baez and look what happened! The Brewers extended Yelich and look what happened!
As if Cano was the worst signing ever. He was worth 21.4 fWAR in 4.5 seasons in Seattle (PED suspension), over which Fangraphs puts his total excess value at 168.9M, while the team paid him $108M for those 4.5 years (PED suspension causes forfeit of pay), meaning the Mariners got $60M in excess value from the Cano contract over his time in Seattle.
The Mariners then traded Cano and offered to contribute $12.5M of his remaining deal (per baseball-reference), to which they received other players in trade (Bruce & Swarzak) plus some prospects (Dunn & Bautista). It’s true Diaz and Kelenic were also part of the deal, but Kelenic’s prospect value absorbed a lot of the positive value from trading Diaz and depending on how much one valued Kelenic at that point he was supposedly worth about half as much as Diaz to as much as nearly the same within a year, so that’s more grey area.
The total negative value on Cano’s deal at the time of trade was roughly -$30M, meaning the Mariners gained a 4-5 fWAR player who outproduced his contract by anywhere from $30-47.5M in excess value. Hardly a bad experience for Seattle. Better you do your research before you start cavalierly throwing around names, like every big deal ends tragically.
BPax
One word: Figgins

At the time though and even with unmet expectations, the deal is a success. There was a HUGE stigma that no one wanted to play in Seattle and this deal erased that.

I think he’s making a huge mistake. Being on a team that wins 54% of its games would be a massive upgrade.

As a fan of a team that has no chance of signing Ohtani, I would like to see him sign with the Mariners.
Ma4170
Agree, I see it as a good fit. And if it’s about money, they might even get a taker for Robbie Ray in a trade considering 3-69 is all that’s left for someone who has high upside. With Castillo, Kirby, Gilbert and the younger guys, they can deal from a position of strength.
tedtheodorelogan
Is Ray expected to be healthy for opening day? I honestly just realized he only pitched in one game last year.
Ma4170
TJS in May so definitely not opening day, more likely post ASB. If mariners ate some of the money, i could see a team having interest. That could give them some flexibility for Ohtani.
Blue Baron
But full recovery from TJS is not guaranteed, so teams will want to see him pitch before trading for him.
good vibes only
They would have to eat all of the money AND get him to waive his full no trade. We are stuck with him unfortunately, we can only hope he is decent.
Stevil
His no-trade clause was only through 2023.
good vibes only
I did not realize that Stevil! You are (thankfully) correct.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
Midseason, but a bounce back 2nd half and he could be on his way to Philly after 2024, where he’d be worth about $60M/year based on what Nola got for his garbage 2023 season!
FWIW, he’s not opting out of the last two years.
good vibes only
Robbie Ray is untradeable. Lets just get that possibility out of our head up front. The only way we get out from under that one is if he comes back at the ASB and pitches like an ace, then opts out for a longer deal. It’s not happening. One of the worst contracts in baseball right now.
Ma4170
I could see him coming back late and pitching decent, its not far fetched. I dont think he would be untradeable at all at that point, and not much money would need to be eaten. Have you been tracking the barely average pitchers and their contracts? Taillon, walker, anderson heaney… if he’s even close to his 2022 level late next year, teams would have interest.
Larry Bernandez 1324IM
Ray for Stanton
Stevil
Like Robinson Canó was untradable?
It’s unlikely he’ll be traded, but an expensive contract swap is a possibility.
There are far worse contracts out there.
good vibes only
I agree there are definitely worse contracts out there. There may be an opportunity for a bad contract swap I just think it’s extremely unlikely until after he comes back from injury. That might not be in time to showcase before the 2024 deadline. In which case he either pitches well enough to opt out or he’s bad and there’s not much of a market for him.
good vibes only
Yeah if he comes back pitching the same as before the injury there would be some interest. I hope he does return strong so he opts out and we can allocate the rest of those dollars to a bat or extending Gilbert/Kirby.
good vibes only
I think Ray’s is bad but Stanton’s is much worse and much longer lol. That’s a pass for me
Stevil
There are two particular players that might make sense: Contreras and Yelich.
St. Louis needs pitching, and though Ray won’t be a factor until at least July, he would either answer a long-term need, or get them off the hook quickly if he opts-out.
Yelich would require Seattle being willing to take on an additional 63 million (considering the full-term of Ray’s contract).
I don’t think a trade is likely, but it’s worth noting that Contreras and Ray have very similar contracts. The money owed would be a wash. If Seattle can’t bring back Murphy, and St. Louis wants to part ways with Contreras, maybe a deal is feasible.
Stevil
Oh, I wasn’t suggesting a Ray for Stanton swap! I was just giving a single example of a worse deal!
good vibes only
I was also responding to Larry Bernandez lol. I’d probably rather roll with Ray than take on Contreras but Yelich could be interesting if they work that money down significantly.
Stevil
I didn’t see his comment. That’s on me.
I would happily take Contreras over Ray. He could immediately help the team. But I’d prefer Yelich as well. I know he’s had back issues, but he was back on track last season, and if he was used as a DH/4th outfielder….
But I’m definitely not expecting either.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
I do like the Cardinals idea, but I don’t think Milwaukee sheds the cash, unless the Mariners eat half his remaining salary. If they dump Yelich, they’d probably trade him as part of a bigger deal with multiple cheaper players, like Evan White who gets $7-8M/year than a guy who represents the same sunk cost every year, even if the contract is a couple years shorter.
Another good fit could be the Dbacks or Blue Jays because they already have experience dealing with him as a player, so they might be more confident in getting full value out of him long-term. He’d still need to pitch for the last few months of the season in 2024 before a team would take a flyer on him in the offseason.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
I like Yelich, but he’s really embedded in the community there. I’m not sure he’d want to leave.
pingston
Well, i’m a day one fan of the team that came into MLB with the Mariners (and has won 2 World Series trophies) and how much better off would he be with a team that has a spotty line-up and which would then have its spending handcuffed? No Mike Trout, for example.
The successful team will need to spend on other facets of their order. From that standpoint I’d say teams that have already spent — such as the Rangers, the Phillies, the Padres and Mets would have a leg up. But two of those — Mets and Padres — have suggested they want to cut spending in 2024 and may be willing to trade players such as Soto and Alonso. Through this lens the Yankees have a lot of re-building to do, too. So the Rangers look good. But Ohtani has played them and knows them better than I do, and they also have a lot of committed contracts. Plus it gets very hot in Arlington although the new Globe Life Field has addressed that with another retractable roof. The roof is also good for the rainy days, which are plenty.
I’m a Blue Jays fan so I would say that along with Texas they have a great shot at this contract. Third largest city in US and Canada, with 6 million locals meaning if there’s a marquee attraction there’ll be demand. No other teams in Canada so the Jays have a built-in national audience and their owners have very deep pockets as one of the two major media companies in Canada (with the other one, Bell, they co-own the Toronto NHL, NBA, MLS and CFL franchises). But Rogers own 100% of the Jays and is in middle of a $300 milion reno that adds amenities for players under the field and for spectators around and under, too. Demolition of the lower bowl is all done and they’re now working on building the new lower bowl with the added amenities underneath it and under the field…So the Blue Jays have the money and a big reason to want to fill the stadium. So, Texas, Toronto, the Dodgers and who else will be in final group of bidders?
brodie-bruce
@pingston
You make good points but I do have an important question that a lot of us here tend to forget, who can actually afford him that is a winner and what happens if he can’t either pitch or hit anymore? What make sho so attractive is also what makes him a huge risk, we’re already starting to see signs that he is struggling to be both a a cy young pitcher and a mvp player (I separated the award’s because the cy is the equivalent to a mvp for a pitcher). Atm his worth is being able to be both a tor pitcher and the big bat in the lineup, but is he worth 40+ a year to be one or the other? Would you give #5 or verlander 500 for 10+ years in the middle of there prime to be a hitter or pitcher and just that no 2 way play or hindsight, but just there abilities in there respective field. 90% would be no while both are hof’ers no 1 dimensional player is worth any where around a 1/3 of your player budget unless he was some mythical being from ancient text. Now there is going to pay sho a king’s ransom because there always a team that does, but imo if sho signs with a “blue chip” contender it’s going to be a lot less money than he “wants” if money is his driving factor. If he wants to play for a winner his price is going to have to drop. I only say that because the “blue chip” teams are already up against the wall dancing around mlb’s soft cap and small markets aren’t really going to pay that unless they feel confident that they can rake in the cash off his popularity. The only thing I can say is that the sho sweepstakes is going to be interesting and what the deal wind up being is most likely going to cripple the team for years to come.
pingston
You’re right, of course, that’s one of the major risk factors. What if he drops off or can’t come back as a pitcher at the standards he set? Rolling the dice will be part of the decisoon-making process, I expect. But if he does return at a high pitching level and continues to smack the ball, he’s even moreso a modern-day Babe Ruth.
So, you’re right there are performance considerations. And someone else here wisely pointed out that if his pitching doesn’t decline he could play the outfield with his rocket arm or perhaps even a quick-reaction spot at 2B or 1B, of course.
But there are also major marketing upsides to signing him. For the few months before 2024 starts he’ll sell a ton of tickets, especially early season tickets not normally sold. And if he’s in the East, either NL or AL, where 70% of the population is he’ll be playing locally a bunch more, even for opponents. This pushes endorsement deals, product sales, etc.
So I’d say if a team has their marketing game sorted out they can immediately exploit his value and that will moderate the mid to long term risk.
I believe mlbtraderumors signing numbers aren’t outrageous for this once in a life-time player. So that puts a starting offer above $500 million for a dozen years… Few teams can afford. Those that can likely also know how to market and balance the risk. And as I’ve said elsewhere here his signing could tip other FAs toward his new home, too.
My hope is it’s Toronto but it’s just hope right now. The Jays do have the money, marketing and audience such a talent demands. And could handle the risk because of the depth of their corporate owners’ pockets. They could also use his bat next year, and his arm as the years roll on. And I believe they can keep spending on other FAs.
But it all goes back to risk. Which execs will assure their owners that it will work out? There are certainly some gamblers out there…
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
If you are paying him $500M, he better be out there pitching with his left-hand until he’s healed up enough to pitch with the right hand!
Blue Baron
@Stevil: At this point, you would be happy to have anyone over Ray.
But there’s no guarantee he returns to full health and effectiveness, so the Mariners won’t be able to trade him until he demonstrates that he has.

He apparently has zero role in the failure, only in success. He’s the MVP…of a sub 500 team. Like at some point are we ever going to put some blame on this guy?
I mean, Acuna won more games, had the more impressive season to me, but he’s shouldering a good deal of blame for getting bounced in the playoffs, which is more than Ohtani ever did.
Go Go Power Rangers
Just wrong. Horrible take. Take a breath and come back. Read it again. Then slap yourself.

Why are you so interested in blaming a player, any player, especially the best player, on a bad team? The Angels are a trash organization with a trash owner. Ohtani played injured for the last part of an MVP season to keep this team and you want to assign blame. Ok dude
SoCalADRL
While I don’t disagree with you about Moreno, it’s pretty tough for mariners fans to talk about any franchise when theirs has never won a championship, been to a World Series and has been irrelevant for the past 22 years.
good vibes only
You won’t hear any disagreement from me there. You’ve got my thumbs up. John Stanton is a trash owner too. At least Moreno wants to win he’s just incompetent at spending his money properly. Stanton doesn’t appear to care.
Hemlock
But Ohtani…
HE HI-5 PUPPY DOG!!!!
tedtheodorelogan
Yeah, that 10 WAR season he just put up was trash. Should have had 15, easy. He was obviously slacking out there. If he was a team player, he would have volunteered to be the closer on days he wasn’t starting in the rotation.
Hemlock
He should have volunteered to pitch with his left arm. MVPs do those sort of things.
LLGiants64
Ummm…. actually, that’s not a bad idea….
DanUgglasRing
I’m certain being on an injury plagued team with a reactionary ownership and Anthony Rendon probably had more to do with their losing record than the guy who’s most likely the reason why they won as many as they did in the first place.
its_happening
Angels also need prospects to blossom in the show. At least, more than they have currently.
Mrivers
Acuna didn’t pitch to a top 10 level while hitting to the same.
Not more impressive.

Ohtani is FREE to choose his destination. After much heartache and frustration in Anaheim is this news by DK really surprising. As much as Mariners fans like myself would love to have Ohtani’s bat in our lineup we’re kidding ourselves if we think Ohtani will choose Seattle as his best bet to get to a WS.
Now…if this current Seattle Ownership group had not ‘squandered’ the chance to improve their lineup over the last 2 FA windows it would be a different story! But as they say in Scotland : if yer Granny had bawz she’d be yer Granda!!
unpaidobserver
Mariners are one really big FA signing away from being a magnet team that will draw veterans and result in a World Championship team.
longines64
Just give the number to the Dodgers and get it over with.
tedtheodorelogan
Pretty much. Them or the Rangers I would guess.
Seamaholic
Dodgers haven’t been in that game lately. I think they’re much more likely going for Yamamoto, and spread their money out. They love depth, and their depth failed them last year. Plus they have loads of prospects they need to trade because they’re blocked.
Rangers/Giants/Angels/Cubs is your field, I’d guess.
Phree4u
Angels are not on the list, if ohtani wanted to stay in Anaheim, he would have worked out an extension before heading to FA.
I Think Ohtani will be a Chicago Cub.
Disclaimer* I have the same amount of sources as the writer of this article, zero.
Gmen777
Dodgers, Mets, Giants, Cubs, Rangers and maybe the Braves are the only teams with any realistic shot at Ohtani and my guess is still the Dodgers
tedtheodorelogan
Unless the Giants sign like 4 talented dudes and trade for about 4 more, they don’t have a realistic chance to sign him. Having just spent a good portion of his career on the Angels, he knows just he and a couple of other good players doesn’t cut it to be competitive. You need a complete team of quality players. The Giants don’t really have any outside of Webb.
DanUgglasRing
I have been saying all along they ought to go hard for Yamamoto Lee and Nola/Montgomery then trade as many young outfielders and AA arms as it takes to get at least one more impact bat. Which in essence means they’ll pay Ohtani 650MM only to leave in his third year opt out.
foppert1
I’d take 2 years of his bat and then let him leave if he wants. No problem. Win win.
DanUgglasRing
I wouldn’t cry if they got him. He’s arguably the greatest we will ever see.
foppert1
Plenty will if they get that lucky. The narrative will just change from “he can’t sign anyone” to “he can’t sign anyone without an opt out”.
stymeedone
Braves, being a public company, and needing to show their books, must maintain a payroll to revenue ratio. They won’t be signing Ohtani.

Dont count out the Giants ability to overspend.
The A’s no longer exist in Oakland.

Oh and also the A’s propose giving the Giants rent.

Let us know who he signs with. The rest will be obvious.

Hot take: Ohtani’s market isn’t going to be as wild as people think. This is his second major arm surgery. That’s a huge red flag entering his age 30 season. He’s still worth a ton, but if someone decides to get up there in the half billion range, they might be the only team close to that.
Joel P
He will most likely go to the Dodgers or Giants. And just between those 2 teams the offers will be gigantic. Both teams have the money and desire to sign him.
unpaidobserver
And play in the same division and would love to tell their fans they won a bidding war with the other team.
Joel P
Yeah I think those 2 teams are enough to start a bidding war. He’s a great fit for both teams I dont see a close third in the Ohtani race.
unpaidobserver
Red Sox seems like a logical fit but the offer would have to top not equal and I just dont see that happening.

Nah, Jedi’s elusive comments about Shohei tells me they are in. Sounds best to keep your mouth shut if you want him
ayrbhoy
Jedi (and M’s fans like myself,) can want him all we want but Franchises don’t have any leverage in FA. It’s entirely up to the player. A player who wants to go to a club that gives him the best opportunity to get to a WS is not going to sign for Seattle. Until the M’s get a new owner we’re stuck with a “Draft-Develop-Trade” policy.
Blue Baron
Of course it’s up to the player. That’s the very definition of free agency.
ChrisEnvy76
Thanks, Captain Obvious.
Blue Baron
You’re welcome.
LLGiants64
A major league team with no chance to sign Ohtani announcing that would not be pursuing and signing Ohtani. Please e mail me when this is over. Bet the A’s are not going to try to sign him, either. That ought to rate an article.
JerseyShoreScore
Any team who signs Ohtani will have an elaborate plan to monetize every aspect of Ohtani both nationally and internationally. If you assume a half-billion dollar price point, it is safe to assume that anywhere from 40 percent to 50 percent of that contract will be offset by new revenue streams. Some teams have a bit less upside in profit. For example, the Dodgers will not see much in the way of new ticket sales, as they are about maxed out in ticket sales. Nor can the luxury tax implications over a decade or more be fully estimated. Ohtani is such a unique talent that the total cost of Ohtani is far less than that high price point makes it seem.

This!
meckert
Yeah, right.
Seamaholic
That’s true now. But fans are fickle. If he can’t pitch at a high level anymore and is in his 30’s as a DH, there will be someone else whose jerseys everyone wants. Remember Dice-K?
good vibes only
Dice-K was not on this level. If Shohei cant pitch he could easily play RF or 1B instead of DH. While that may not be worth 50M/season he could win MVPs with the bat alone.
mlb1225
40-50% is low-balling it by a lot. Remember in 2019 when Bryce Harper signed? The Phillies basically made their money back in the first 24 hours in jersey, memoribelia, and ticket sales alone.
Seamaholic
No they didn’t
Braves83
I saw a report (so yeah numbers can be manipulated to be lies in the end) that said Ohtani is worth 65-75 million in additional revenue–in merch sales alone. Yeah ticket sales improve revenue etc but the merchandise is where Ohtani really really affects the bottom line. If he wins a championship with his new team–those sales will be somehow even greater. The entire Asian continent will be wearing those teams colors. Ohtani might be easily worth the money, easy.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Braves83 Licensed merch sales revenues are divided evenly across the league. It’s not a significant gain for the Dodgers.
good vibes only
This isn’t totally true. MLB receives a 12% royalty that is divided among the league. The vast majority of profit from team store merch sales goes to the team and probably in some cases negotiated percentages to the player. Shohei’s contract would definitely be offset in a significant way by the amount of merch sales he would generate. I’m not sure how much, but it’s meaningful.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Good stuff! Did this change in the current CBA?
good vibes only
I’m not sure if it changed in the newest CBA, most of the articles I’m seeing do appear to be prior to the new one. It seems like that royalty % split is mostly from online sales and licensing where the team basically keeps the majority of the in-park merch revenue prior to the leaguewide revenue split.
PoisonedPens
I believe that is only from the official MLB store, not individual team sales…
foppert1
There are about 50 countries in Asia. They will sell some merch in 3 of them.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Maxed out ticket sales sounds like the perfect reason to raise ticket prices…again.
Juggy
I heard the same perspective on MLB now
EnglishM
Ohtani has already indicated that any team that leaks discussions with him will ‘lose face’ in any chance to sign him.
That an insider hasn’t heard any word on this probably works more in their favour than as a clear indicator that they won’t be involved.
They most likely won’t be involved because their owner is a tight-ass, not because Kramer says so.
dshires4
There’s plenty of reasons not to sign here, from Ohtani’s perspective. But from Seattle’s? There’s zero reason not to full court press. Every reason listed is the excuse of a cheap ownership or a front office with serious philosophical flaws.
They’ve punted multiple free agency windows they would have improved the product on the field, and Dipoto’s “trade first” mindset boxes his avenues for improvement into a corner. The best free agent ever is right in front of you. Go spend a billionaires money. He’s a literal investment with a tangible ROI. Now is the time to push the chips onto the table.

Last night when the DK report came out I watched the Mather rotary club interview and the 54% interview. I hate to say it but the culture of this club at the very top is still toxic. Players like Cal and JP know it too although I wish they wouldn’t have said it to the press. No accountability or desire to win. Just greed. Owner is a bottomfeeder and Jerry, while I do believe he has done an excellent job building a development program, is clueless in other aspects. If money is the problem they are going to wind up going halfway to Shoheis AAV with replacement level players AGAIN this offseason. I hope I’m wrong but there is zero real Shohei news out there and this being the first to come out is pathetic.
dshires4
This being the first to come out is also pure speculation. There’s nothing coming from the Mariners on this topic. Jerry was weirdly cryptic and avoided the questions about Shohei.
But what you said is absolutely true. They’ll spend 60% of Shohei’s ABV on marginal players. It’s pathetic and inexcusable.
BigRedMachine
If this is true, I hope not, and as much as I have hoped and prayed that the Mariners were saving their money the last few years for Ohtani’s free agency (you can always dream) I can live with this if they go in another direction and sign 2-3 free agents. Either a Yamamoto or Snell, Jung Hoo lee and maybe J.D. Martinez. Just please spend some money to go along with the young crop of players you have on the roster, without having to trade some of them…….
ayrbhoy
IMO Snell has as much chance of a homecoming in Seattle as Shohei- slim to none. Ask yourself this- if this M’s owner has been reluctant to spend $$ why would he use that much to buy a SP when you have THIS Rotation? Snell to Seattle is a nice story but imo it’s just that: Fiction.
While I do see the M’s being slightly more active this offseason compared to the last 2 it makes more sense for them to improve the lineup, not the Rotation.
BigRedMachine
Because if you can sign Snell, who has made it clear that he would love to come home (for the right price I am sure) you then have much more pitching depth and can look to trade a Woo or Miller for a bat…I agree, we have holes in our line-up.
Zippy the Pinhead
Exactly right, Big Red. If the rotation became Castillo, Gilbert, Snell, Kirby, and either Miller or Woo, and then turn one of those last two, Hancock, or Dollard into a major league hitter who has a history of hitting well in the wet, cold weather in April, May, and September, then things start to get into focus. Shame they’re too cheap to get Ohtani.
Inside Out
Mariners are being stupid. The increased revenue of over $100 million per year though ticket sales., merchandise, increased ad revenue etc, would more then offset his contract. But Dipoto is really bad at his job so this makes sense.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
But the Yankees will.
Someone argued with me that the M’s were going to sign him. I don’t see that happening at all, nor would it be a wise investment.
Poolhalljunkies
I think any team hoping to sign him needs to factor in staying over at least the first cbt threshhold for a large part of the contract and likely touch the 2nd assuming they plan on surrounding him with other stars long term..
Optimistic M's Guy
That new article in the Seattle Times really shows the profit margins that we have banked over the last several years. We are running a ridiculously low payroll compared to the rest of our division. Take out the ridiculous A’s and we are dead last. We shouldn’t be aiming for 2 win guys like Urias at this point. We should be looking for major upgrades at this point and actually going for it. This screams “value for money” instead of going for true upper tier players. We should have been aiming for Semien and a 6 war season instead of paying Urias 5 Mil to scrape by, and yet here we are looking up at the Rangers, saving millions and hoping for reclamation projects and crossing our fingers and toes. Its getting beyond frustrating that we are accepting of this and Management and ownership isnt being held accountable. This team is continuously raising ticket prices, concession prices, adding luxury boxes, yet adjusting for inflation are still down over 65 million from our peak in 2018 payroll. Its a joke and its no longer acceptable. WE NEED BETTER!
Ski to Coors
Smart. It’ll be fascinating if any team does offer 50 AAV for a pitcher that had TJ who just happens to also DH.
good vibes only
At this point I think you’re looking at it backwards. He is an elite bat that also happens to pitch. Its a valid question how valuable the arm is in this equation post surgery tho
Ski to Coors
Even if you reverse it, it’s a DH who happens to pitch and of course, again, with TJ caveat. The very best DH only players are probably looking at 25M and even that would be very extreme. Adding a lot of pitcher value is dicey since you don’t know how he’ll return or realistically stay healthy long term continuing.
While there will be some initial revenue boost, I don’t think it’s a major long term boost, unless he happens to turn a team into a championship dynasty which is unlikely. Seems more likely he’ll end up giving up pitching within 5 years and the novelty is gone.
good vibes only
I think its pretty widely accepted that he can play at least average RF or 1B if it comes to that. You are probably right on the pitching after 5 years but who knows, this dude is a physical freak. Wide range of outcomes here for the total package over 10+ years but I think the floor is very high with the bat alone. Will be fun to watch anyways wherever he winds up
pingston
But I believe he’ll also be a free agent magnet. Sign him and all the FAs you talk to may get stars in their eyes.
The Blue Jays built the ’92 and ’93 Series winning teams through their farm, through blockbuster trades, and through very selective Free Agent signings. In ’93 they could also point to the World Series trophy… Ohtani will be like that trophy.
Branded apparel income is shared, so the teams all want him to NOT sign again in Anaheim, but there are media opportunities that aren’t. The Blue Jays owners also own a national sports network in Canada, Sportsnet, that broadcasts all their games and all MLB games. Setting up a distribution deal with a Japan TV network would be a no-brainer. The Yankees and others have such an incentive, too.
Oldhalo
He is a DH because he pitches. He is extremely talented, really fast and could play 1b or the OF if he can no longer pitch. He is an elite bat as stated above. Pitching is icing on the cake.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
Personally, I would try to convince him to come back as a closer, telling him that he’s averaging 130 IP at best, so why not put less stress on his arm and allow him to closer out 40-50 games a year. and throw 60-80 innings. It would allow him to give 100% without fear of injury and he could probably maintain high 90s through the length of his deal.
Zippy the Pinhead
That devalues his hitting, unless he’s already in the game as an OF
AngelsFan1968
I think its crazy for any team to commit half a billion dollars or 50 million a year for one player, in which the only known current fact is that he can only hit. It’ll be at least another year to know if he can still pitch, and at an elite level.
He will occupy the DH full time, which eliminates giving regular position players quasi days off as the DH..
Teams will have to revamp their rosters/philosophies to accommodate him . The reason he initially chose the Angels was that they were the only that would let him dictate his schedule. Other teams may not be as accommodating..
The rhetoric about wanting to win is stale. I have yet to hear any major league player publicly say they don’t care about winning..
I think the team that signs him, has to look at the ROI in terms of dollars and not WS championships.. Baseball is a team sport and it takes a minimum of 40 players to win championships,
Probably "Rick hahn"
BREAKING! White Sox not expected to sign Ohtani
Joel P
Ohtani wants to win. The Mariners have 1 playoff appearance in the last 20 years. He was never going to sign there.
Melchez17
I would normally say teams like the Dodgers, Giants, Yankees and Red Sox are favorites… but I’m going to say the Rangers could possibly be the leading candidate. They have an excellent team now and some very good young prospects for down the road. They have a need at DH. Texas has no income tax… can you imagine how much he saves by not having to pay income tax? Sure, it’s only for home games, but they play Houston also… and the Florida teams.
I think he’s going to the Rangers.

seattlehof24
Do the Rangers even have any money left?!
Halo11Fan
Dodgers can afford him and they have the depth to go to a six man rotation when he’s ready.
I don’t know why people thought he’d go to the Ms, or the Rangers for that matter, he’s already turned both teams down.
User 2079935927
When did he turn them down? The time he signed with the Angels?
Halo11Fan
Yes. H e chose the A gels over every AL team. Now that the DH is in both leagues, there are 15 more legitimate suitors.
good vibes only
You make a good point about the environment being different this time w/ the universal DH. But there were NL teams in on him last time as well including the Dodgers.
Equally important contextual difference to the universal DH: he’s also proven he can be an elite bat and an elite arm at the same time. That was not a given last time around. And from the moment he signed until he came back with a vengeance following his first TJ it sure appeared his doubters might be correct.
The Angels believed in him more than any other west coast team and that’s ultimately what got him to sign there in the first place. And they were right.
Halo11Fan
I don’t think he took the NL teams seriously.
Every team wanted him. I really see it as the Angels or the Dodgers. And I’d bet it’s the Dodgers. My guess is the Angels will go big on Yamamoto.
good vibes only
I agree the NL teams probably weren’t seriously considered last time. You’re also probably right about the Dodgers but I hope not. Would much rather see him go literally anywhere else (except Texas).
I would be surprised to see him with the Angels after the ugly look at the end of last season w/ his locker being cleared out before the team could comment on it. But who knows, Arte is crazy, who knows what he’ll do or spend to convince Shohei to stay.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
He turned down the other teams because he’s addicted to a Manga about a baseball player who hits and pitches and the comes to play for the AL team in Anaheim, the “Salmons.” Ohtani was just a 23 year old trying to live out the dream of repeating the path of the character in the Japanese comic. I think the comic is called “Major”. The character he idolized is Goro Shigeno.

The Dodgers could certainly afford Ohtani. The status of their rotation depth come 2025 is a big question mark.

Halo11Fan
2p25. And their farm system is still loaded because they know how to draft and develop players. Their last rankings were sixth.
Two top 10p starting pitcher prospects, and that’s not counting Miller. And they seldom have issues developing starting pitching.
ChrisEnvy76
Who are their top 10 pitching prospects and what site said they had them? According to the MLB.com rankings they don’t have a single top pitching prospect in the top 10 for left or right handed pitching.
BabyBoyBlueDiamond
If money is the deterrent… sell the team. Plain and simple. The revenue that follows Ohtani makes up for his price tag. If the cost is too great for this amazing player you have no business owning a professional baseball team. Seattle will never reach its fullest potential with this ownership group slicing its own Achilles year in and year out.
tanner829 2
Exactly correct! Ownership could care less about winning. It’s just another spot in their portfolio to earn money.
tanner829 2
Mariners ownership could care less about winning, unfortunately. I am not bitter, I am a realist based on facts & history. Mariners ownership group is only interested in continuing to earn one of the highest profits in MLB year in and year out. It’s unfortunate for fans. Dipoto has said as much, just read between the lines. Waiver claims for relief pitchers & bad trades are the MO for Seattle. Dipoto is too blame for protecting ownership & not coming out & saying he has no choice because he has no budget to work with. Seattle is 4th in payroll in the AL West, hence why they did nothing last offseason & will do nothing again this offseason. They will make more bad trades & thats about all. They traded Seawald to save a few MM & they don’t sign relievers to Free agent deals, in the middle of a playoff chase which they lost out by 1 game. Being a Mariners fan is truly painful. Until Seattle sells the team to an owner who cares about winning & has a passion for baseball, instead of an ownership group who looks down at there portfolio once a year to see how much profits they made. It’s been widely reported Seattle made more PROFIT THAN ANY OTHER MLB TEAM IN 2022, and most likely matched or exceeded that number in 2023. Truly sad & shameful.

Team that signs Ohtani should prepare for a tax penalty, which leads to other penalties. Question is, does he bring winning and high revenue to your team? Yes to the latter, initially.

For the good of the game, I hope Ohtani goes anywhere other than the Dodgers. How many superstars do they need?
I’m just a little disgruntled, as the Giants can’t seem to land any top tier free agent. I’m afraid they’re going to be looking at 4th place in the NL West for the foreseeable future.
scottn59c
I know how you feel. But consider that the Giants did land Correa, who was last season’s consensus #2 FA. Thank god they balked and were able to walk away.
Ohtani isn’t going to suddenly make a 4th place club in their division a championship team, anyways. He makes a lot more sense for a team like the Dodgers, who possibly ARE one big piece away from being a shut-down powerhouse.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
Did they land him, or did they intentionally catch and release to entice the big target Judge, and missed on him too?!

I would have loved to see Ohtani as an Mariner. The dream of him with Julio would have filled my heart with hope for the future. Now all I’m left with is trying to figure out which mediocre reclamation project Dipoto will find in the bargain bin this offseason.

I believe the Mariners will add some impact players this offseason but mainly through trades. I do have them signing free agent DH J.D. Martinez to help bolster their lineup.
Martinez would have also been a nice fit back with the Dodgers or on the Cubs but I had those two teams as front runners for Ohtani. If Ohtani signs early on in free agency, Martinez might still be a solid backup DH option for LA or Chicago.

Jerry has 3 months to prove that they seriously want to try to win a world series because they are on life support with a morphine drip to me and if they don’t do anything this 45 year Mariner fan is DONE. I will find a new team to root for guaranteed…Quit getting this bargain basement utility garbage we already have at least 8 on the 40 man roster..I’ll be watching
Stevil
It’s especially frustrating because of the blatant lies about spending once they were out of the rebuild. Jerry himself literally stated they would ‘pay it forward’ and gave a timeline of 2020-2021. Even if you give them a pass for the pandemic, here we are years later with a lower payroll than in 2019.
They spent approximately 30m less this year than in 2018. I don’t know which annoys me more: John Stanton’s lies, greediness, and willingness to throw Jerry under the bus, or Jerry’s willingness to cut excuses for him and move the goalposts.
hllywdjff
What you said Stevil is spot on and I’m totally disgusted especially after Texas turning it around as fast as they did maybe Jerry’s just that clueless and he’s selling us a bag of bolts and he’s just a glorified car salesman but like I said I’m done with it if I don’t see some serious effort and quality players here in the next few months I played baseball for over 30 years I know the sport very very well and I’m sick and tired of watching this every night every time we needed a big hit it was Dylan Moore Sam haggerty Jose Caballero Mike Ford I mean it’s been ongoing for the last 3 years and I’m sick of it
Slider_withcheese
He’ll never be the same pitcher. Teams would be better off signing JT Martinez and picking up a FA pitcher than invest in this clown show.
Optimistic M's Guy
If I was in the Mariners front office I’d be BEGGING for him to sign anywhere but Texas at this point. Us Mariner fans are already livid that we have been leapfrogged by them when we thought it was our time to shine…. only to see them win the world series. Now add insult to injury and sign Ohtani as well and you might as well accept the pitchforks on your doorstep. As horrible as it sounds if we can’t get him to the M’s I almost WANT HIM TO GO TO TEXAS so maybe it will trigger some change.
good vibes only
If Shohei goes to Texas it’s over. Rangers would win the division by 10+ games for a decade with a lineup like that.
Stevil
Then Dipoto’s recent comments about the slow process and need for even more patience would make sense!

JD playing the long game to maximize profits and minimize ownership effort!

I think the 4 teams with the best chance to sign him are these:
Dodgers: Strong history of winning, strong front office, west coast, huge financial capabilities to build team around him, talented but flawed team that is weak in pitching
Cubs: Strong financials, strong front office, strong foundation to win in the future, good but not strong current team that needs much more pitching
Jays: Strong financials, strong current team that needs someone like him to push the needle, unique element of being the team for an entire nation, great pitching staff that is built to win now, strong Asian community, can have more impact on the Jays from a ticket sales and economic standpoint than any other team.
I don’t think he selects the Padres or Giants due for multiple reasons. Giants have a weak team and so-so minors. Padres have troubles in the financial realm and no clear leadership or direction with Seidler’s death. Mariners were going to be 4th team but this article seems to change that. Many think the Rangers are a player, but, i do not think so. They can win without him and have a ton of money on the books for the next few years.

At this rate wondering if any team is going to sign anyone

Anyone but the Dodgers. That’s all I hope for.

Silly me this is not about money for Otani. after all how much money is there? Another words this is more about where he darn well chooses where to play. It seems to me he will stay on the west coast possible the Dodgers, or the Giants. Seattle is not about to spend that kindof money period.
Scot
None of us ever seriously believed Ohtani was coming here.
Two straight offseasons where Quality Bats were available we passed, and it cost us.
Ownership is cheap and instead of supplementing our team via Free-agency with Quality Bats; We continue to use our farm system.
Now we’re in a year short of Quality Bats.
Add in our own players expressing their feelings about Ownership not wanting to spend.
Not a great position to be in.
We’ll likely overpay in trades vrs spending.
Ownership just needs to step up, and even overpay a bit in Free-agency if necessary.
Actually let some of these young pieces develop.
I’m fine without Ohtani; But there’s no real excuse this Ownership can’t add 50M to payroll.

LFG mystery team!!..btw..hou doesnt seem to be in the picture

I am just putting them in there as maybe the bonus tax money is an incentive over Dodgers and they are usually in on the big FA. I would be very surprised if he wasnt a Dodger. They are good, they are on WEST COAST!, he already lives in LA, they have lots of “cap space” (I know there is no cap). After thinking it over, I will move them up to 95%! 1% Texas, Mets, Houston and Mystery Team.
YankeesBleacherCreature
So you’re saying that the A’s have a chance?

But compared to when he first signed, when his geographical appreciation of this wonderful continent was very limited, he has now stayed multiple days in every market, in every corner of MLB. Teams couldn’t fool him on how good their city is, how good the local food is, how good the local Asian culture is, the rabidity of the local baseball fans, the spending on facilities and players the team has already done, etc. He’s seen it all up close. As somebody who has spent considerable time myself in 46 of the 48 continental states, and Canada, I can tell you it opens your eyes. It’s not just a blank map any more.
The Big Apple, booming and sprawling Atlanta, two teams in Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania and Illinois. Teams on either side of Missouri. Lots of variety and experiences which are different from what he lived as a suburban LA resident. Chicago doesn’t get earthquakes. Florida doesn’t get snow in the Spring, but Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philly, New York and Washington do (Toronto does, but dome). I can easily generate why I’d like to reside in 18 MLB cities not in California. Then it’s how much, how long, time zone, endorsement opportunities, etc.
The winner of the Ohtani sweepstakes needed to be doing their homework a year ago. Not showing up with a chequebook and a logo on their shirt…
holycow16
Cubs will land him.
❤️ MuteButton
The Astros are 0% chance. Crane is very frugal. Plus if you sign Ohtani that means that you have to run Alverez to the outfield on brittle knees so Ohtani can DH
Not to mention the Astros still have to work out contract extensions for Altuve and hopefully Bregman. You can say what you want about the Astros, but they’re not stupid, and this would be.
Irishblade
WHY, GOD, WHY?!?
Wheeler Dealer
It’s between Cubs and Dodgers
Stevil
“Seattle hasn’t been exactly shy about payroll in the past few years…”
If anyone actually thinks that Seattle is spending, because of Ray and the extensions, I’d remind them that they were 18th in spending last season and only Julio & Luis are on the books beyond 2026.
prov356
I know a lot of Ms’ fans thought he was a lock to go to Seattle because of his interest in the team when he first came over. The difference is he was cheap then. It’s different when at a minimum, 25% of your payroll would be going to one player. That money can be spent so much better elsewhere…and he won’t even pitch in 2024 and maybe beyond.
I hope the Angels are out of the running also.
Stevil
Mariner fans know there are no ‘locks’ and the problem isn’t that Seattle won’t likely spend on Ohtani, it’s that they won’t spend on any stars.
prov356
Right. That was a figure of speech. My point was Ms’ fans were speaking with great confidence that Ohtani would be a Mariner this of season.
Stevil
I think there was hope after the All Star game, but every time Jerry Dipoto opens his mouth, hope for any star, dies.
prov356
Yeah, he was the same with the Angels.

Report: Nippon Ham Fighters not expected to sign Shohei Ohtani
RC_WV_4
Dumb question, but wouldn’t we make that money back and more just by way of tickets, merchandise sales, partnerships, etc. with him coming onboard?
I don’t see the issue signing him bc of $
prov356
Revenue might be strong during the first half or so of a 10 year deal assuming he can still pitch at his usual level. I think that revenue stream will diminish once the contract and the player age or sooner if he can’t pitch anymore.
LDilbert
Let’s see..
$500 mil for 11 years of Ohtani
$100 mil for LF Soler & JD Martinez

RC_WV_4

my question was just more so thinking we could sign him + others bc the ROI on him just being on the team would be
RC_WV_4
Who would you want back relief was from Boston? Or Toronto in that Geno/Marco suggestion?
LDilbert
Let Jerry major in on the minors . i don’t care on our end really it’s about shedding payroll with Geno and Marco. Do Marco a solid and send him packing already. Not enough has been said about him being off the playoff roster last year that’s got to be a dark cloud over the team.
Does Boston/jays have minor league relief pitchers near mlb ready, I’ll take those. Jerry just wiffed on getting verdugo in the cambell/Urias trade.
I’m thinking both teams would have interest in Geno. Geno would be nice in Boston off the green monster. Jays want geno as well. Boston wants left handed quality starters
And geno only goes if they can overpay and get both Jd Martinez and Soler. Overpay damnit! Better than Ohtani 500 mil
Ma4170
I’d be surprised if Soler could even replicate’s Teoscar’s production from last year. I do have JD going to the Mariners in the contest, seems like a solid fit.
SodoMojo90
Soler doesn’t fit the low strikeout high contact profile Jerry wants.
painterman360
You have a bad lineup when your 1b and 3b are batting 8&9.
Catuli Carl
I didn’t see the “not” in the headline at first and had a slight panic attack
jacl
some team is going to way overpay for this guy. unless you’re a serious world series contender and only have a need for a DH there’s no reason to sign him except for marketing purposes. as we saw in LA, one or two superstars don’t make a team a contender.
Digdugler
Jays only need a DH…. but yea at $50M, a pricey DH. His bat is probably worth…$30M a year…maybe $35M. He obviously will pitch a gain though so then his arm is worth about $30-$35M in those years. Some risk for sure, lots of risks for anyone if you go up to 10 years, But really the risk is mitigated by the fact he can both hit and pitch. If his arm gets injured again in the future, he can still bat. This compared to signing a Degrom or any pitcher at $30+M and when their arm gets hurt they are dead weight. (I know Jays wont get Ohtani)
pingston
I agree. Having a Swiss cheese line-up doesn’t build confidence, or win World Series. A team with a pretty good record of signing FAs should have a better chance of signing Ohtani, I’d think, once all factors are weighed. But can they afford to keep doing so as they sign him?
This leads me to believe that the next couple weeks may provide some evidence. If one or two teams start snapping up FAs that early it may mean they’re trying to make a case to Ohtani and his representation.
If I’m right, watching actions of Blue Jays (need 4 FAs or trades to fill holes at 3B, LF, 2B and utility role), Cubs (I don’t know their holes), Dodgers (ditto), Rangers, Mets, et al before December could offer a clue….
Andrew Scott
This is outstanding news! Now there’s one less team for the Pirates to compete with!
rightwingrick
The marketing value of signing Ohtani would cover his contract, so the M’s are nuts if they let “cost” get in the way of being aggressive. Their season ticket sales would double or triple overnight.
The M’s are never again, for many years, going to be in the enviable position they are in RIGHT NOW, with very young outstanding starting pitching (a surplus if they obtain a free agent veteran), a strong bullpen, and excellent defense.
Time to take the leap. Ohtani is the perfect parachute in terms of marketing value and recouping costs.
It also seems the right time to select a LH veteran pitcher from the free agent market since Robbie Ray is out until the second half of 2024 and Marco Gonzales is coming back from injury himself. This would also allow the M’s to trade one of their highly valued young pitchers for other help.
The recent trade for Luis Urias means that another trade is likely in the works, either to add Urias in a flip or trade Dylon Moore or Sam Haggerty. Also in that package could be one of the young outstanding infielders in their Top 15 prospects, such as Michael Arroyo or Tai Peete. Add a young major league starter to that list, a young major league outfielder with upside (Kelenic, Marlowe, Canzone ???) and a major league relief pitcher with good numbers .and suddenly San Diego might be interested in Soto trade.
COME ON, OWNERSHIP !! MAKE THESE MOVES AND THE VALUE OF THE FRANCHISE BUMPS UP CLOSE TO $3 BILLION. IT’S A WIN-WIN.
dshires4
Spot on. The Mariners contention window is a solid 5 years right now with the rotation in the shape that it is, the roster as currently constructed, and the impact prospects within a year or two of the MLB club. The time to take the calculated risk on a guy of Ohtani’s caliber is NOW.
LDilbert
Bad investment darkwingduck, two critical arm surgeries will make him a 1 way player and that’s not worth $480m. Or would you rather have an injured 2 way player? He’s 29 1/2 years old. You’re really willing to risk the mariners future on a long contract like 48m/yr for a washed up player in his late 30’s.
When will his third arm surgery be? How much will his pay be while he’s on the bench injured
Do you think they’ll put anything around him after that sunk cost?
dshires4
Yes, there’s no reason to believe this TJ will keep him from pitching and the first half of the contract >>> the last half.

A Japanese TV Network paid the Angels Millions to televise Angels games back to Japan.
Zippy the Pinhead
If you watched the all-star game, you saw 45,000 fans chanting to Ohtani with love, respect, and hope that he’d choose Seattle for his next deal. And now you see Seattle management folks telling them all to shut up, eat their peas, and buy higher-priced tickets for another season of great pitching, no hitting until July, and the possibility of the potential of a chance that they’ll rally in the late summer to falter in September and just miss the playoffs.
Luis Urias? Really? We can only hope he’s not like the other guys and hitting .175 on June 1.
Juggy
Forget about Ohtani. You got a swipe in now and go get Daniel Vogelbach.

Not surprised. Sure, he’s a great talent but having so much salary wrapped up in one player doesn’t sound good.

If they were in Vegas, they would have signed him. The return on investment on Ohtani is great. They’d have a whole country following and investing in the team.

Can everyone just be honest with themselves and say Ohtani is a terrible move at $460m
Major injury risk.
Mariners just need some right handed bangers that bang. veterans who make contact. Fill the gap for 2-3 years until our young position prospects come up.
You bring some little 6’0 guys and under in and Cal dumper is going to unload on them. Bring in some dudes. 6’3- 6’4 that already let us look eye to eye with the Alvarez Tucker, Seager of the Al west.

6’4 Soler
#2 get

Or
6’4 Paul Goldschmidt for France, kelenic

Why would st louis want france or kelenic they are stocked with position players better than either…they would want good young pitching from seattle..if anything

The Mariner’s announcement was only ever about saving face because Otani was never going there to begin with.
Rsox
With a move Vegas all but certain now the team that should push the hardest is the A’s. No real money on the books for years and entering an entirely new market with no fan Base Ohtani would be huge for marketing the team to Vegas and Nevada in general. Vegas is about headliners and who is headlining the A’s as they move into their new stadium in 2028? Gelof? Soderstrom? Langeliers? All will be in their arbitration years and any and all could be traded away by then. At least Ohtani would bring with him international exposure and have a Las Vegas jersey as a top seller
Poolhalljunkies
One problem ..ohtani wants a chance to win presumably before 2028
Rsox
True. I don’t see him actually signing with the A’s but this is the play i would make if i were Billy and Forst. Convice Fisher to open the wallet and let the moth out for a player that can single handedly be your entire brand selling yourselves to a completely new fan base/market.
If i were picking a sleeper team it would be the Braves. AA is a smart guy and has cleared a lot of potential salary off the board this week (trading 5 players for a lefty reliever with an ERA over 6.50 is not usually his style unless he’s working on something). The Braves have come out of left field snagging Matt Olson and Sean Murphy so you never know what he might be up to
Subatomicbunt
Rsox, You probably just swayed/convinced about 150 people at least. I am on board with that logic!

One of many clubs that will drop out, $50M a year is has quite an impact on a clubs payroll and leaves little room for other needs. Many clubs will want to sign him but only a few can afford it long term.
pleasantflavor
Kramer’s article citing “industry sources” saying “that landing Ohtani doesn’t appear to be within the Mariners’ realistic agenda this offseason.” could mean so many different things.
What was the question posed?
Was it “Do you think the Dodgers are the front runner for Ohtani? How about those Mariners?”
Or “Do you think the Mariners will even try for Ohtani?”
Two totally different tracks.
Kramer is not wrong in his logic of spending $50MM on one player vs. $50MM on several players. All teams have that conundrum.
I know the recent track record of bringing in impact bats has not been fruitful. So were their non-deals. Everyone wanted Kris Bryant. Everyone wanted Trevor Story.
But they have tried. Their process was sound. The Winker/Geno logic was sound. The Teo logic was sound. Even the Wong concept was sound. Based on past performance, why wouldn’t they think those would work out? They didn’t. Move on. If landing Ohtani is the only path to a successful offseason in your eyes, well, that’s silly. 29 teams will be unsuccessful in that pursuit.
The team is good. The floor needs to be raised and like everyone in the league, the stars have to align for any acquisitions to be impactful, let alone pay real dividends.
It may be via FA, it may be via trade. But there is more to a successful roster than Ohtani. There has to be. Because there’s 30 teams and only one of him.
Have a great day.
Old York
Well, if true, then I’m 0/1 on the FA predictions. Not a surprise though as I predicted I would go 0/50.
Redstitch108* 2
He will sign a 1 year $50 million deal with Halos with mutual extension of 8/$50 per. Gives him a year to recover at DH only at full pay and gives him a year evaluate the Angels new direction. You heard it here first.

I would not be surprise Ohtani signs a 2 year contract. He can’t pitch until 2025.
So he resigns with the Angels and in 2 years we’re right where we are now. He makes a ton of money in endorsements.
Subatomicbunt
I agree Winslow. 100% SHOULD get a 2-3 year deal tops while we watch his arm mend.

That is exactly my fear with my Cubs signing him. I truly wonder if that would blow Hoyer’s entire budget. And the Cubs have so many question marks and holes to fill. But at the same time, the idea is kind of exciting, I must admit.
Bostonsports85
First off the dude is a two time MVP .. secondly only real two way player in MLB ..
Third the money they are going too make off him from media stand point alone is gonna make the contract worth it .. jersey sales , ticket sales , all the promoting they can do around the fact that a superstar is on the team whoever signs him .. it’s going too b insane how much money is going too be made between shohei and his new team .. I’m praying the redsox gets him but who knows ..
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Well, I am not expected to sign Ohtani eitber
AlienBob
If I were the Mariners I would sign Blake Snell to replace Robbie Ray as a left handed starter, J D Martinez to play DH and Jung Hoo Lee for RF. Whit Merrifield or Tim Anderson could hold down 2B.
Aaron Sapoznik
Robbie Ray is still owed $73MM from his 5 yrs/$115M (22-26) contract which includes $23MM for this season when he is unlikely to pitch following his May 2023 TJ surgery.
Blake Snell is one of the top two free agent pitchers this offseason along with Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto. This site predicted Snell will land a seven years, $200MM deal this offseason which amounts to an AAV just shy of $29MM. Snell recently being named the 2023 NL Cy Young Award winner might drive his price up even more.
If the Mariners are indeed out of the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes, Snell or Yamamoto would be excellent consolation prizes. They might prefer to pony up more dollars spread out over more years for the 25-year old Japanese ace who is projected for a nine years, $225MM contract rather than gamble on one for Snell who will turn 31 on December 4th.
Snell is a similar age to whar Robbie Ray was when he inked his Mariners contract two offseason’s ago. Aside from injury concerns, he’s also a lefty who sports premium stuff but often at the expense of better command. Yamamoto is 6 years younger and has plus plus grades with both.
As a revenue sharing recipient Snell would cost the Mariners their third-highest selection in the 2024 draft. Should Yamamoto land that projected $225MM deal, any MLB team that signs him would owe his former Japanese team a $35.625MM posting fee.
good vibes only
I would pass on Snell if we are just going to spend our way out of the poor lineup construction. There’s no need to buy a pitcher unless we trade another pitcher like Miller or Woo for a bat.
If this nonsense about us not even trying to get Shohei is true, and we don’t make a trade w/ Miller/Woo, I think Martinez + Lee + Merrifield would be a nice outcome, but sadly probably much more money than this ownership group is willing to put into the team if they aren’t willing to at least put forth the effort for Shohei.
Slider_withcheese
My ballot for the free agent contest has him going to San Fran. There was zero thought or consideration for Seattle.
M.C.Homer
We still see tourists from Japan daily, even during the off season. Just to come take pictures of Anaheim stadium. Straight from the airport with luggage in tow! It’s the 1st thing they want to do when coming to CA.
The Japanese advertising in the stadium is everywhere $$$.
You get more than a baseball player with Shohei, he is currently the national treasure of Japan.
They love him. Whoever signs him gains revenue from so many sources that otherwise wouldn’t be there with another player. Not even Trout. Also, whoever signs Shohei will be the favorite American team of Japan and will reap mind boggling benefits from it.
All of the business synergy this creates is just as attractive as his baseball acumen.
At one point I thought a Japanese conglomerate would purchase the Angels or at least a minority of it. We saw busloads of Japanese business men pull up to the stadium last winter and spring.

The op-ed in the Seattle Times from a couple days ago really puts this lack of serious effort towards Shohei news + 54% type comments in perspective. M’s fans if you haven’t read it you really should. We have more than done our part in building the revenue base for Stanton to increase payroll by 40-50M per year above 2023 levels.
I hope I’m wrong but if they don’t show something serious this offseason I think a lot of M’s fans are going to start to reduce their own spending and attendance will drop. That will only reduce the ownership’s willingness to invest in this championship window further.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I did read an article that mentioned Ohtani likes Boston and may consider playing there. The West Coast theory isn’t necessarily true.
CheapazMariners
I’m not interested in spending more money to watch the Mariners, but I am interested in investing. When is their IPO? They’re not going to spend money, so they’re going to make money.
Dock_Elvis
Not signing Ohtani will be the smartest move some GM ever makes. It’s 100% not necessary to construct a roster with a half billion dollar investment in any player that’s going to be 30 before his arm returns and probably be paid hefty through age 40. It’s a high risk Angels/Pujols signing….except you lose two players if he goes down.
