Dodgers Acquire Tyler Glasnow, Manuel Margot; Glasnow Signed To Contract Extension

By Mark Polishuk | December 19, 2023 at 2:45pm CDT

December 19: Per Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the extension is actually valued at $111,562,500 over four years, with Glasnow to make $30MM from 2025 to 2027. The player option in 2028 is valued at $21,562,500, slightly higher than previous reporting. Heyman’s framing also suggests that Glasnow will choose on his option first. If he turns it down, then the Dodgers will get to decide whether or not to trigger a $30MM club option.

December 16, 3:33pm: USAToday’s Bob Nightengale relays the full contract breakdown for Glasnow, reporting that the 2028 player option is worth $21.5MM. This accounts for the previously unexplained $1.5MM discrepancy between the reported contract breakdown and the Dodgers’ announced $136.5MM figure.

12:08pm: The Dodgers and Rays finalized the four-player trade that will sent right-hander Tyler Glasnow, outfielder Manuel Margot, and $4MM in cash considerations to Los Angeles in exchange for right-hander Ryan Pepiot and outfielder Jonny Deluca.  News of the trade first broke a few days ago, with the final hurdle being the Dodgers’ ability to sign Glasnow to a contract extension.  That deal has now also been completed, with L.A. announcing that Glasnow has agreed to a new long-term pact worth $136.5MM.  Glasnow is represented by Wasserman.

As per the terms reported yesterday by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the new contract will see Glasnow earn $110MM in new money over the course of the 2025-28 seasons.  Glasnow was already slated to earn $25MM in 2024 according to the terms of his prior contract with the Rays, and the new deal with L.A. breaks down as $90MM in salary over the 2025-27 seasons, and then the Dodgers hold a $30MM club option on Glasnow’s services for 2028.  If the team declines that option, Glasnow can exercise a $20MM player option for 2028.  Since Passan’s numbers only add up to $135MM rather than the Dodgers’ announced figure of $136.5MM, that extra $1.5MM has yet to be accounted for, possibly a signing bonus or a bit of extra guaranteed money on one of the years.

Unlike Shohei Ohtani’s $700MM mega-deal with the Dodgers from last week, Glasnow’s extension doesn’t contain any deferred money.  As such, it will be entirely portioned out onto the Dodgers’ luxury tax bills based on a $27.3MM average annual value over the next five seasons.  According to Roster Resource’s calculations, Los Angeles has an estimated luxury tax number of roughly $253.7MM for 202 — still under the $257MM secondary CBT tier, thanks to all of Ohtani’s deferrals lowering his tax-related AAV to $46MM per season.  Still, with a number of roster needs still be addressed, the Dodgers’ tax bill could certainly still approach or exceed the next penalty tier of $277MM between now and Opening Day.

Glasnow has been seen as a possible trade candidate basically since the moment he inked his previous two-year, $30.35MM extension with Tampa Bay during the 2022 season.  Signed when Glasnow was recovering from Tommy John surgery, the deal saw $25MM of the salary backloaded into the 2024 season, making it likely that the cost-conscious Rays would try to unload the right-hander beforehand.

The 30-year-old’s availability dovetailed with the Dodgers’ need for pitching this winter, as the Los Angeles rotation is full of injury-related question marks (i.e. Walker Buehler, and possibly Dustin May at midseason), pitchers without much big league experience (Bobby Miller, Emmet Sheehan, Michael Grove, Gavin Stone), and a swingman in Ryan Yarbrough who may be best suited for bullpen duty.  Pepiot was another member of that young crop of arms, but he’ll now head to Tampa Bay as he enters his third season of MLB duty.

In moving Glasnow and Margot and factoring in the $4MM in cash considerations, the Rays unloaded $33MM worth of salary for two players making the Major League minimum, in a move reminiscent of many budget-trimming, sell-high types of trades Tampa has become known for over the years.  The Rays’ success rate in these deals is almost a cliche by this point, and even if Tampa Bay fans have become weary of the team’s continual roster churn and perpetually low-spending ways, the Rays’ ability to field competitive teams speaks for itself.  Pepiot figures to step right into the rotation spot left open by Glasnow, while Deluca may not be guaranteed a spot in the Opening Day outfield, but he’ll at least be part of the shuttle heading back and forth between Triple-A since the outfielder has two minor league option years remaining.

The right-handed hitting Margot figures to move into a part-time role in the Dodgers’ outfield picture, acting as a complement to the left-handed James Outman and Jason Heyward.  Margot has played primarily as a center fielder and right fielder, thus lining up well with Outman and Heyward’s projected positions.  Mookie Betts will be taking over as the Dodgers’ new everyday second baseman in 2024, so it’s safe to guess that L.A. will aim to add more outfield depth if Betts will be spending most of his time on the dirt.

MLB Trade Rumors’ Steve Adams broke down the Glasnow extension in larger detail yesterday, while Darragh McDonald outlined the news of the four-player trade agreement for MLBTR on Thursday.  Jack Azoulay-Haron of MLB Nerds and Bruce Kuntz of Dodgers Digest first reported the four principal players in the trade.  Jon Heyman of The New York Post first relayed that a Glasnow extension was a possibility. Jeff Passan of ESPN relayed that the deal was agreed to, contingent on the extension.  Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times first relayed the Rays’ inclusion of the $4MM in salary offset.

You’re about three players late. Betts, Freeman are on deferrals. It’s almost like it was a thing before you all came down with Ohtaniitis and can’t stop spewing the word deferral as if it never happened before.

This is one of the few trades which makes sense for both teams. I’m not a Dodger or Rays fan, but IF Glasnow stays healthy, Dodgers have an ace. The Rays picked up two very good prospects, one (Pepiot) who can help them immediately. Deluca could be up soon. Win-Win.

Same thing that happened last year with the Mets and Padres… all the different people screaming about the same disparities and star-hogging; but, then they made fun of the Mets/Padres for thinking they could buy a WS.

Ironically, this year there are Padres fans who are in the naysayer category because they had to cut payroll. I guess it’s easy to switch sides?

Even more ironically, these same folks clamor for NFL rules, when in the NFL teams can defer up to 75% of a contract.

Freeman deferral is 35% (57M of 162M) and Betts deferral is 32% (120M of 365M)

Ohtani deferral is 680M. Ohtani deferral is 97% (680M of 700M).

I think it’s time to change the rules for everyone. Deferrals, sure, but there should be a limit. This is not just about the Dodgers, this is for every team. Maybe then we’d get closer to true competition across the board.

at Ohtani’s request. Any team in the bidding was offered the same deal. This wasn’t the Dodgers wanting to defer all that money. The Giants accepted. The Dodgers accepted. The Angels did not. Ohtani wanted to be a Dodger, and then you all became whiners about deferrals.

The Dodgers gave up 2 very good players to get him. They also took back an overpaid OF. So Glasnow needs to be healthy and an Ace or a #2 SP for them or this trade is a bust for LA. Rays always make out well on trades.

Rockies have a pretty young team aside from Bryant and Blackmon. They should be a bit better just by being a year older. And not losing 27 starting pitchers to injury would help too. The Rockies should be good for 75-79 wins in 2024 and in the playoff hunt in 2025.

“”Give a crap about Padres fans”. ..Exactly. All the late Peter Seidler did was search Heaven & earth for the best, most expensive baseball players in the world to bring a championship to S.D. It didn’t work out, but I really don’t see how anyone could say “does not seem to give a crap” when they spent a Gazillion dollars trying to get a championship.

They were operating at an unsustainable level to try and get a championship before their owner died. That has to level off. If they could’ve unloaded Bogaerts and Machado they would’ve. Instead Soto was the only play.

They don’t have the money. I don’t know why fans think all baseball teams are swimming in pools of cash. They are businesses like any other, and they spend (not just on players) what they earn minus some profit. Padres’ owner subsidized them for a couple years, which is really rare, to try and win one before he died. Sadly didn’t work. You really sound feeble and entitled getting angry with them like that.

MLB disparity sucks . where one team gets completely dropped TV money and others have 250 million a year endless cash cow from tv revenue and has enough money to completely pay the CBT with no problem . how does that make MLB better . MLB has a 10 Billion dollars a year revenue that would be like 350 million per team .

Tell me what Yankees and Dodgers fans would think if they’re teams traded their stars to gut payroll and didn’t reinvest the savings.

Yankees and Dodgers fans are entitled and it’s not their fault.

MLB is a mess. No salary cap has created this mess and allows owners to.hide behind the ‘we can’t spend to.keep up’ narrative.

The Padres new ownership sans Peter Seidler has not demonstrated that they want to win.

They are hiding behind a fallacy. No one knows how much the Padres truly have to spend. Open the books, let us see.

We simply buy the narrative about ‘the TV deal and loan.

The Padres ownership is built on the strength of its investors.

Peter Seidler was enthusiastic about bring the Padres a WS title.

The current group seems more concerned about turning a profit than bringing SD it’s first professional championship.

It’s only sustainable for teams like Dodgers and Yankees huh because of their markets . Padres sold out 2/3 games that’s great for baseball . If you put good players on teams the will come people will watch bring in more revenue but when cut the TV revenue completely off of course they will be cutting back.

Unless you make it so unfair to big markets that there are long stretches where they don’t win, like the NFL. Most of the fanbase comes from large markets, so take away their ability to acquire big stars? Then it will hurt the bigger markets and the game, because small markets cannot make up the difference with fans.

Regardless, how do you overcome nicer weather, lower taxes, cheaper housing, and other impactful decision makers to even out the teams’ draw to players?

Problem: it’s not just a matter of offering money. It’s how that money is taxed, spent, and the location too. You can’t isolate one variable and think all will be utopia if that one variable is even. It won’t. Decades of proof support this.

They aren’t at all. The MLB has more parity than any of those you named. You’re just assuming it’s parity because of a cap – it isn’t.

If it is, why have 12 teams never won the Super Bowl? Why have four teams never been to the Super Bowl? And that’s with 50% of the league getting into the playoffs! Why did they do that if the cap was working so well? Because it wasn’t.

Why are the same teams winning year-in and year-out? Why are the same teams losing?

You’re talking about financial equity which isn’t at all equal with a salary cap. That’s not parity. It’s parody maybe…..

Last, why weren’t you fighting the good fight of “parity” last few seasons when your owner was spending like a drunken sailor?

“MLB lack parity” is a euphemism for jealousy about other teams acquisition of desirable free agents.

you cant blame MLB for lack of salary cap the MLBPA completely refuse it and is a non-starter in pretty much every conversation since it will limit the players. If the mlb players conceded to caps on salaries or non-fully guaranteed contracts then a cap might be feasible along with a floor and shared money.

The PAs in other sports are not as strong or want to limit salary potential.

So the Padres have a choice in baseball. To spend or not to spend being that baseball lacks a salary cap.

Teams can accumulate money distributed by MLB’s revenue sharing system BUT are NOT mandated to put that money back into payroll. That does not allow for or encourage parity.

MLB continues to shoot itself in the foot. The new lottery system further prevents a team finishing near the bottom from rebuilding it’s farm system.

Teams that finish near the bottom can now draft lower. Now teams can avoid spending on rebuilding their farms locking them into years of last place finishes and obscurity.

NBA and NFL do not have as an extensive minor league system as MLB. so yes they can choose to invest what money is given to them into either the minor leagues, scouting both international and domestic, multiple types of drafts including an international to expand the talent, etc etc.

This is an argument being made by MLBPA and is not without merit but this money does have to be spent to MLB items and not pockets as profits. So if it goes to just salary then the owners will just cut the costs in the other areas such as analytics and scouting also probably making the team worse still.

Also i am 99% sure there are more players in a major league organization than in any of those major league sport organizations because MLB have what 4 or 5 individual teams per organizations each with atleast 20-25 people on it (im not sure if they have full roster for all the A teams).. Also there are twice the amount of games than the next of those sports. Guess what it costs money to handle those too.

The lottery was already in place in the NBA and MLB basically tried to mimic that with a few stipulations to make it more competitive and reduce tanking same way the NBA did otherwise you will have he likes of pirates and rockies and other teams that wont invest money to make the team better.

I am not sure which argument you are making now. Are you trying to stop teams that are always on the bottom that usually dont invest money but keep getting top picks every season or do you want to curb that so other teams that actually had a bad season have a shot at bettering themselves get the better pick?

In the end, if they put in a cap and floor which the owners seem to atleast be willing to listen on but they want both not one or the other and that could bring competitiveness. The issue is are the players willing to limit how much is available to them as caps on payroll also creates caps on salaries to be paid out. No 700 million contracts and most likely no deferred payments. Only affects a few individuals but those individuals seem to have the loudest voice.

The only difference between teams and publicly-trade companies is literally just that some MLB owners are diehard fans generous enough to blow throught profits to buy championships. Most fans say deals are overpays and then whine about their teams not overpaying for free agents. All fans are entitled brats. Get your own business and spend like that. See how that goes. Sure, Oakland is historically cheap, and Tampa is even said to be dangling Aroz in trade talks, but most teams should be judged like companies. We all complain about CEOs making an average of 300x the average salary, and yet players are somehow above that? Most of us make more than minor leaguers, and top MLB stars make way more than 300x. Fans are really fooled easily by the media.

Easily. The owners are all billionaires. They can afford it. And if they can’t afford the payrolls or have to take out loans to make payroll they shouldn’t own the team. We once had a scumbag owner named Frank McCourt and MLB forced him to sell. In case anyone doesn’t know it hasn’t always been roses with The Dodgers. Don’t let the last ten years fool you. The 90’ and early part of this century were horrid times to be a fan but I stuck with them and now being rewarded for it. Baseball is a cycle every team has their ups and downs. For The Dodgers after 130 years we finally hit our golden age.

FanGraphs projects Glasnow for about a run less per 9 innings this year. And about the same number of innings. That’s a lot of ground to make up

Before you ask, no, I don’t think FG’s projections are gospel. I think they are much better than gospel, since they use actual scientific methodology and the gospel is just blah blah blah.

No, that doesn’t mean I think projections are perfect

Yes, I trust FG projections more than I trust internet randos

Did Manuel and Tyler agree only if they are given veto power over future personnel decisions like the aging shady sellout phony b***h ohtani has? Worst contract of all time and ohtani will average around 3 war and the fans will turn on him within 4 years.

I had to stay in a hotel on my way back from a deployment, I go to take a shower and hear a loud crash, my dog attacked his water bowl and jumped on the dresser after a plastic water cup. I take everything sitting out and put it in the bathroom, finish my shower and he’s laying on the bed pulling the stuffing out of all the pillows.

Glasnow averages 58 inning of CY Young quality pitching per year. The Dodgers will likely end up paying just under $500,000 per inning pitched if he holds to his norms. That’s horrifically expensive, but if you can afford it why not?

Glasnow is basically the Wagyu steak or white truffles of pitching: you will get a tiny portion for huge money, but it will be the best meal you ever had.

Glasnow might be the sharper of the two major free agent signings for LAD. He’s getting his money immediately. 680m deferred sounds great until COVID -29 comes out in ten years and the team loses all income.

Obviously I’m being facetious but there is always risk of something bad happening including a bankruptcy of the team. Wonder if 68m a year is going into escrow. Kind of doubt it.

Has an mlb team ever gone bk? Maybe not but there’s always a first time. Ohtani should have deferred less than he did. The one robbing LAD is Glasarm and he’s doing it without a gun after LAD got fleeced by Tampa.

I guess you have trouble reading or you are one of those people that like to change the meaning of words. Obviously what Ohtani and the tax Dodgers have done is ‘permissible’ under the CBA, but it makes a mockery of it and does undermine the intent of it. Sorry, but you are incorrect.

No, it’s a $460 million contract. That’s it. The extra money is to compensate for the fact that it’s deferred. It doesn’t make it worth more than $460 mil. The deferrals make it necessary to add money to keep the value at $460 mil.
My reading skills are awesome. Math skills not too shabby either.

So you’re carrying water for the tax Dodgers and ohtani sycophant crowd. Cool. But your reading skills suck because the author is specifically mentioning the deferrals and you are not reporting the contract accurately. It’s not a $460 M contract, full stop. You can’t do math, either.

Its VALUE is $460 mil. Don’t take my word for it. MLB, MLBPA, the Dodgers, Ohtani, his agent, and by their silence, every single other team in the league, including the ones that lost out on Ohtani, are in agreement. You and a select few other innumerate imbeciles on this site can’t seem to either A) follow along with simple explanations, or B) take the word of people significantly both smarter than you and more informed about the process.

Last time, it’s a salary deferral, not a tax deferral. If you can’t keep up that’s ok, but please be quiet about it.

The Dodgers can afford to give away players with their developmental success in the last 5 years and spend stupid money on a pitcher that even for the 2020s is not durable enough as a stater. He finally goes over 100 innings and what do they think? That he’s going to turn into Wilbur Wood.
If you want to pay that for someone who might get you 150 innings at best. Since you will have to monitor him carefully well the Dodgers. Like only barely one handfull of teams can do that. They don’t give an F. They know even if he barely makes 15 starts they can blow money like this.

I don’t care about your semantics (it is actually an income tax dodge, too, btw). Simply put, it is a deferral of what? Oh yeah-money. 68M per year. It’s not a $460 M contract. Otherwise, once they get to $460M, theTaxDodgers would be done paying him. But they’re paying him $2M a year for 10 years and deferring 68M per year to be paid out starting 10 years from now. I never said it was 70M a year for the next ten years, but it is equally not true to be 46M a year over the next 10 years. You can spout out over and over that it is ‘valued’ at 460M, but It is more than that. And I’m never going to be quiet about this as it is going to ruin the sport for many. Glad you like uneven competitions.
