Angels Outright Adam Kolarek

By Mark Polishuk | January 6, 2024 at 1:10pm CDT

The Angels have outrighted left-hander Adam Kolarek off their 40-man roster, the team announced.  The move creates a 40-man roster spot for Zach Plesac, whose one-year deal with the Halos is now official.

Kolarek is a recent signing in his own right, joining the Angels on a one-year deal worth $900K back in November.  Because Kolarek has been previously outrighted in his career, he would have the right to reject this assignment and re-enter free agency, though he would also be walking away from that $900K salary.  It seems like this transaction might be something of a paper move that gives Los Angeles some roster flexibility but won’t impede Kolarek’s path to competing for a bullpen job this coming spring.

The groundball specialist has a 3.62 ERA over his 149 1/3 innings in the majors, a tenure that includes a World Series ring with the 2020 Dodgers.  Kolarek had a 3.07 ERA over 108 1/3 innings with the Rays and Dodgers from 2018-20, though some control problems have both limited his results and his time in the majors altogether, as he has posted a 4.68 ERA over 32 2/3 frames since the start of the 2021 season.  Kolarek spent that time with the Athletics, another stint with the Dodgers, and a brief four-game stretch with the Mets last season, plus some time in the Braves farm system without a big league call-up.

I am just glad the White Sox were able to steal Edgar Quero out of the Angels farm system at the deadline with the Lucas Giolito deal. Got Ky Bush as well.

Yeah. That trade sucked from our side.

I think Quero bites us most but a writer who knows prospects better than I do thinks Bush will.

We’ll see but the fact we’re split on which way tte trade hurts more is telling.

Ky Bush was one of the few promising pitchers in their system. White Sox did well on this trade.

how long has Perry Minasian been on vacation he sure got a kickback job with the angels. Don’t have to worry about making trades or signing free agents. but then again look who he works for. Arte Moreno spotted in Orange County aluminum recycling center with four huge bags of aluminum cans look out fans you heard it here first looks like we’re ready to sign a major free agent mr. Burns was the finalist to buy the team last year. Get your hot stove from Homer Simpson.

Looks like Perry is spending coin to create AAA depth.

A requirement when you don’t develop AAA depth.

Didn’t the angels just guarantee this guy like $900k a few weeks ago?

If he doesn’t accept the assignment he walks away from the money and re enters free agency. Trying to see if they can stash him in the minors.

I think perry is realizing he can get better relievers if he waits it out, probably wants him to walk away

The Angels should hire a ham sandwich to run the team, couldn’t do worse than the “humans” running it now

Hopefully it’s buyers remorse. He’s most likely trying to stash guys in the minors, but I’m sure if he waited a couple months kolarek would’ve signed a minor league deal. Getting tricky for no reason

Plesac might be outrighted himself if the team lands another starting pitcher. Perry is building a nice triple-A team.

Plesac has options left, not sure how it works exactly, but locked on angels was saying he can get sent down a couple times.

I mean, what this is now is basically a split contract where the MLB and Minors salaries are the same. Wise move for under $1 mil. Worst case here he leaves or is claimed and you pay nothing.

Yeah not a big deal either way, I’m hoping he adds another reliever. I have a feeling the market is going to be slow, maybe they can sign a good vet like moore on a 1 year deal like last year before spring training.

He can’t even get claimed since he’s already outrighted, and there’ s no way he’ll reject the assignment since 29 teams passed on him at $900k

I fail to see how the team essentially buying a 41st roster spot for less than $1M is some kind of indictment against the FO

Read that the wrong way. But I could see him potentially go back to the open market. $900 is barely $100 above league minimum now. Prolly worth taking that slight risk if he thinks a better opportunity is elsewhere. Not sure there is, but point is it’s a worthwhile gamble.

I can’t imagine a pitcher who’s made ~$2M in career earnings would walk away from a $900k guarantee when he just passed through waivers

Can someone explain to me why all the other teams sign these types of guys to minor league deals while the Angels give major League Deals. Stop painting this as “building depth”. Didn’t he do that last year? The Bees had a bigger payroll than the A’s.

Philips too. He gave a major League deal. That prevented Moniak from getting the opening day roster nod.

Not sure if Phillips was really blocking moniak he was just the 4th outfielder, because they wanted moniak to get consistent playing in the minors. It doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. I feel like he does it because we have no depth. Eventually they get cut I rather have ten kolarek’s over one loup.

He isn’t going anywhere, that $900,000 salary works just as fine in Salt Lake City as it does in Anaheim.
