Angels Sign Zach Plesac

By Nick Deeds | January 6, 2024 at 1:07pm CDT

TODAY: The deal is official, and MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger (X link) reports that Plesac signed a one-year contract worth $1MM in guaranteed money.

DECEMBER 30, 10:34pm: Murray reports that it’s a major league deal between the Angels and Plesac, though the specific terms of the contract are still not known.

10:14pm: The Angels are in agreement with right-hander Zach Plesac on a deal, according to a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Robert Murray of FanSided first reported that a deal between the two sides was close.

Plesac, 29 next month, made just five starts for the Guardians last offseason before being demoted to Triple-A and eventually outrighted off the club’s 40-man roster in June. The right-hander posted a disastrous 7.59 ERA across 21 1/3 innings of work in those five contests, and his performance at the Triple-A level last season did little to inspire confidence: Plesac mustered just a 6.08 ERA with a 17.9% strikeout rate in 19 appearances at the level. While those brutal numbers surely make Plesac something of a surprising choice for any club to add to their pitching staff to those unfamiliar with the right-hander, it’s worth noting that Plesac had established himself as a solid middle-to-back of the rotation starter in the years prior to his disastrous 2023 campaign.

Initially drafted in the 12th round of the 2016 draft, Plesac made his big league debut as a 24-year-old back in 2019, when he made 19 starts in the majors for Cleveland. At the time, he had the look of a solid mid-rotation starter with a 3.81 ERA (126 ERA+) across 21 starts in his rookie season even as his 4.94 FIP and lackluster 18.5% strikeout rate both left much to be desired. Plesac then took a major leap forward during the shortened 2020 season. The right-hander posted an incredible 2.28 ERA that was 96% better than league average by measure of ERA+ and a strong 3.39 FIP.

During the truncated campaign, Plesac’s peripherals caught up to his performance as he struck out 27.7% of batters faced while walking just 2.9%. That strikeout-to-walk ratio placed Plesac between Brandon Woodruff and Clayton Kershaw for the 13th best figure among starters that year, while only Kyle Hendricks and Marco Gonzales allowed less free passes. The strong performance set him up to be a key cog in Cleveland’s rotation for years to come headed into the 2021 season.

Unfortunately for both the Guardians and Plesac, that future as a key piece of Cleveland’s pitching corps did not come to pass. Plesac instead reverted to his previous, low-strikeout rate form in 2021 and has stayed that way ever since. Unlike his rookie campaign in 2019, however, his results fell back down to Earth alongside his peripherals. The diminished results with a 4.49 ERA (90 ERA+) and a 4.59 FIP across 274 1/3 innings between 2021 and 2022. Although his walk rate remained at a strong 6.2% during that time, he struck out a measly 17.2% of batters faced. That figure was the fifth-worst punchout rate among starters with at least 250 innings pitched between the two seasons.

Of course, it’s worth noting that even in those 2021 and ’22 seasons where Plesac offered diminished production relative to his previous heights, the right-hander’s results were only around 10% below league average. A team can do far worse than 25 starts at that level of production for their fifth- or sixth-best starting option; 31 starters posted an ERA- of 110 or higher while throwing at least 100 innings in the majors last season, or more than one per team in the league. If the Angels believe Plesac’s 2023 campaign was an anomaly and his 2021-22 performance is a more accurate baseline, the right-hander could be a valuable depth option for a club that saw 14 different pitchers draw starts in 2023.

After losing Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers in free agency earlier this month, the Halos have plenty of work to do as they look to retool their roster and return to contention in 2024 on the heels of back-to-back 89-loss seasons. Though the specific terms being discussed between Plesac and Anaheim are not yet clear, a deal for Plesac figures to be either a minor league pact or perhaps a relatively inexpensive major league deal that won’t prevent the Angels from making other additions to the roster, including in the rotation. Either way, Plesac has options remaining headed into 2024 and would likely compete for a spot in the Angels’ starting rotation this spring before potentially starting the season as depth at the Triple-A level should he be unable to secure a starting spot.

Yeah not only that I think he’s had attitude problems broke his hand in the dugout, got suspended for breaking the Covid bubble with cleavinger. If it’s a minor league deal it’s worth a try he did have a good rookie year.

Unless a slot is saved for him, which is very common, there is nothing wrong with a minor league deal.

The trouble happens when there is a spot for him to lose. These guys seldom lose that spot in Spring Training.

If you’d seen his starts in CLE and COL last year I think you’d see things differently. Nothing wrong with him physically. However, he’s a defective unit emotionally. My recommendation for LAA is to employ the services of Mas Sajady. If he can’t fix him, nobody can.

Yeah I’m thinking the same about a trade. They don’t have quality prospects as trade currency but they do have the always valuable low-cost controllable players that can be backfilled by spending money. And a new coaching staff who might unlock poor performing players.

Silseth, and detmers could get the negotiations started plus the brewers would need atleast two to replace woodruff, and burnes. If something happens they better have a extension lined up.

As a Padres fan the Angels are who I most support on the American League side of the fence as “The Enemy of your Enemy is your Friend” (in reference to our arch-rival Dodgers). Who does Arte plan on replacing Ohtani with at DH if JD Martinez doesn’t sign with Anaheim? Brandon Drury? Nolan Schanuel?

I’m getting tired of the free agents still holding out for a few more bucks. At this point I’m sure they already have great offers out there. Any team that signs them now is just doing it for PR purposes. I bet most of them will not live up to their contracts. It’s great for them individually but bad for baseball to have such a difference between the top end and low end disparities for players and and teams.

On another note why doesn’t Arte openly state that he will invest in building a strong foundation for the future. All that free agent money chasing these players for past performances should be better spent on building up younger players with an emphasis on player facilities and Minor Leaguers to Major leaguers. I miss guys like Eddy Bane!

The reason I brought up those two is Knapp, Downing and Frost were included in the same trade.

Interesting signing. Looking at his advanced metrics for what he can control, his kwERA for the career sits around 4.00, so a decent 4th/5th guy in the rotation.

    Season ERA

    2019 3.81
    2020 2.28
    2021 4.67
    2022 4.31
    2023 7.59

    Season FRA

    2019 4.71
    2020 3.39
    2021 4.72
    2022 4.56
    2023 4.97

Essentially, for the first 4 years of his career, he overperformed what his numbers should have been, represented by FRA and he underperformed in 2023. what his ERA should have been (7 ERA vs. 5 FRA). Given the history of the Angels experience with pitching, I don’t expect must to come out of his but he needs to understand that even in AAA, he had an kwERA of 3.70 and with an 18% regression in production from AAA to MLB, that would bring his kwERA up to 4..50. At AAA, his actual ERA was 5+ as a starter so the team and Plesac need to realize that at best, he’s a back of the rotation pitcher / long relief.

I don’t understand why the Angels give major league deals to players that no one in the league would. They love giving away free money to players on the downslope of the career sold as limited downside high upside. Or Nothing to lose!

Because the angels don’t have much of a farm system all these minor signings probably will all be in AAA farm system Arte Moreno doesn’t invest in player development. Or the farm system Instead of trading Shohei Ohtani, and get 5 top prospects, they trade for picture and a reliever and lose couple of top prospects. Insane.

Please sell the team before you run us into the ground like the Oakland A’s and move the team out of Anaheim.
Btw, stop with calling the Angels, Los Angeles.
There’s only ONE Los Angeles team and that’s the Dodgers. Go back to Anaheim Angels.

The Angels need to stop with the has been’s, never were’s and mediocre at best pitchers.

They’ve been doing it for a decade, and where have they not been in a decade? The playoffs.

Dude had a career ERA of 4 before 2023. Maybe his probability of turning it around is very low, but it isn’t zero. Giving somebody like this a shot on a very cheap deal isn’t the dumbest thing, provided they have other moves like maybe Snell coming. But losing Ohtani puts the Angels on the downside anyway, they probably won’t be competitive for 2-3 years. They aren’t beating the Astros, Rangers, and M’s anytime soon.

Glad to see Plesac signing with Angels. I think he can pitch better than he was showing, as Cleveland wanted rid of him since 2020 but didn’t move because he was potentially decent pitcher. Then some blips. OK
Angels all to gain on signing him. I hope he recovers his stride and this ends up being great add.

While this is not the big move we need for starting pitching, this signing makes sense.. Plesac is a guy who has had some success in the Big Leagues and more importantly, has options. He is a depth piece that we didn’t have last season. We had to march out guy who shouldn’t be starting like Barria, Suarez, or Wantz. Ot inexperienced guys like Rosenberg, Diaz, or Fulmer. Yes we will be in trouble if we’re relying on Plesac to start more than 4-5 games. But at least we can put a ML arm out on the mound, if the situation arises.

Just wondering if Plesac is the best we can do (his caliber) with top free agent pitchers shying away from a team that surely seems on the downside. Was hoping that Wash (and his coaching staff) would be a bit of a lure; just not sure that’s enough.

I’m not going anywhere near the Big A this year. Can’t go to the local sports bar and grill. They only have the Dodgers on. Even the bar across the street from the stadium durning an Angles home game last year had the Dodger game on. Went to a hockey game in April at Honda center last season. Ohtani on the mound. What game was on in the lounge? Dodger game

So much negativity in these comments

This is exactly what GMs with bad rosters should do. There are no bad $1m contracts in MLB. Bring a bunch of “potential” in to spring training and see if they can find it again

The Angels are not going to be good. They are in a tough devision. Spending $50m for 2024 on Snell and Montgomery is stupid and a waste of money. $1m for Plesac is an ok gamble. More to gain here than there is to lose

Here is the problem. If Plesac is truly allowed to via for a rotation spot that means the Angels are not going to add another starter.

Are they really not going to do anything about this pen? Are they really not going to do anything about this rotation?

They should add similar pitchers to Plesac for the bullpen. They need to be realistic. They are a 4th place team with little hope of finishing higher in 2024

There will be a time for LAA to compete but in is not now (I’m a BOS fan so I am in the same situation)

        TEX has old pitchers
HOU will likely lose 2/3 of Altuve, Bregman, Tucker soon. HOU has mentioned trading Valdez

Buy low on players hoping to flip them for prospects

They could flip for prospects. The point I’m making is Plesac would only choose a team where had a legitimate shot to make the rotation. if the Angels add another starter, he doesn’t.

This move only makes sense for Plesac if the Angels promised him a legit shot.
