Free Agent Profile: Mike Clevinger

By Nick Deeds | January 6, 2024 at 10:11pm CDT

The market for free agent starters has been fairly busy this offseason, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Sonny Gray, and Aaron Nola having come off the board at the top of the market alongside a host of mid-level arms including Kenta Maeda and Seth Lugo. Even the back end of the market has been fairly active, with bounceback arms like Luis Severino and Lance Lynn finding new homes on one-year deals earlier this winter. For all the buzz surrounding the free agent pitching market, however, one name stands out as having not come up in the rumor mill at all to this point in the winter: veteran right-hander Mike Clevinger.

It’s something of a surprise that Clevinger’s market has involved such little fanfare, as the righty was one of the most dominant young arms in the league with Cleveland in the late 2010’s. From 2017 to 2019, Clevinger dominated across 447 2/3 innings of work with a 2.96 ERA that was a whopping 52% better than league average by measure of ERA+. The righty struck out 28.3% of batters faced against a 9.1% walk rate, good for a FIP of 3.32. Among pitchers with at least 400 innings of work across those three seasons, Clevinger’s ERA ranked sixth in the majors behind a quintet of multi-time Cy Young award winners: Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, Clayton Kershaw, Justin Verlander, and Corey Kluber.

Dominant as Clevinger was, the right-hander was shipped from Cleveland to San Diego at the 2020 trade deadline and wound up requiring Tommy John surgery just four starts into his tenure with the Padres. Rehab wiped out his entire 2021 season, and the right-hander returned in 2022 to post the worst season of his career. In 117 1/3 innings of work, Clevinger struggled to a 4.33 ERA with a 4.98 FIP, the first time he posted a ERA+ below the league average since becoming a full-time starter in 2017.

Clevinger’s peripherals also suffered considerably. Though the right-hander entered the 2022 campaign with a strong 27.3% career strikeout rate, he punched out just 18.8% of batters faced in his first year back from surgery. His batted ball metrics suffered as well: while he had generated grounders at a 40.3% clip during his peak years in Cleveland, that figure fell to just 35.2% with the Padres in 2022. The difficult season led Clevinger to sign a one-year, $12MM deal with the White Sox last offseason, and the righty made good on that deal by turning in a solid performance last year.

Clevinger’s time on the south side of Chicago got off to a rough start as he struggled to a 4.84 ERA across his first seven starts, but the right-hander settled in from there to bring his ERA down to just 3.88 by the time a wrist injury sent him to the injured list in mid-June. That success carried over when Clevinger returned to action six weeks later, and he entered the month of September with a sterling 2.45 ERA and solid 3.88 FIP in his last eleven starts. Clevinger mostly cruised through the month of September until his final appearance of the year, where he was torched for six runs in just 1 2/3 innings of work to leave him with a 3.77 ERA and 4.28 FIP on the season.

While Clevinger flashed his previous, dominant form at various points throughout the 2023 season and saw his average fastball velocity tick back up to 94.6, higher than his career average, it seems unlikely the veteran righty would be able to fully rediscover his previous form over a full season. After all, Clevinger’s groundball rate was at a career-worst 30.9% last season and while his strikeout rate did improve over 2022 it still sat at just 20%. That’s a far cry from the 33.9% clip Clevinger punched out batters at back in 2019 and pretty significantly below league average this past year.

Even so, the right-hander figures to be a quality, innings eating veteran who a club can comfortably place in the middle-to-back of their rotation in 2024. While Clevinger’s strikeout and groundball rates left something to be desired last year, he flashed strong command with a walk rate of just 7.3% while maintaining hard-hit and barrel rates significantly better than league average. Combined with his rediscovered velocity, it’s easy to see how the veteran right-hander could be an above average big league starter next season. If he can live up to that billing, the right-hander might prove to be a steal for the club that ultimately signs him this winter.

MLBTR projected Clevinger for a two-year, $26MM deal on our annual Top 50 MLB free agents list, where he placed 30th. That $13MM AAV would be something of a steal for a solid, mid-rotation arm this offseason given the pricey one-year deals arms like Frankie Montas ($16MM), and Jack Flaherty ($14MM) signed on the heels of seasons marred by injury and under performance. Meanwhile, the likes of Lucas Giolito ($19.3MM AAV) and Michael Wacha ($16MM AAV) managed to surpass those marks on multi-year guarantees. While Giolito is three-and-a-half years younger than Clevinger and Wacha has a stronger recent track record, it’s not hard to imagine a scenario where Clevinger posts comparable numbers to either pitcher in 2024 at a lower price point.

The veteran righty has been something of a ghost on the rumor mill this offseason, with few if any clubs directly connected to the right-hander. With that being said, plenty of teams are known to be in the market for starting pitching this winter including the Red Sox, Orioles, Angels, Giants, Yankees, and Cubs. Any of those teams could benefit from adding Clevinger to their rotation mix, and he could prove to be an attractive backup option for teams that either can’t afford or fall short in the bidding for top-of-the-market arms like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, or who are unwilling to meet the asking prices for potential trade candidates like Dylan Cease and Shane Bieber.

I was against Clevinger signing with the Sox, but I admit I was wrong. He was very competitive in the second half of the season. I wasn’t hoping the Sox would resign him because I knew they wouldn’t. He would have fit well with the Sox, but his numbers were just too good for Getz. I hope he signs with a contender.

It’s funny when fans act like these teams have morals. They don’t have any such policy in place. Same way they didn’t for steroids (obviously), sign stealing, or whatever current cheating is rampant across the MLB.

Beff: MLB is hypocritical. They ban Rose from BB and the HOF because he gambled. Now every broadcast includes the betting line before, and sometimes during, games. Time for that lame brain Manfred to stop messing with the game and work to get Rose and Shoeless Joe into the HOF, where they obviously belong.

@avenger I completely agree about baseball and Manfred. Many people hate him for failing to punish the Astros players, but I hate him for failing to out EVERYONE who was cheating, and how. I firmly believe the players were given immunity to protect MLB, as long as they agreed to take the heat, and not tell the whole truth.

I’m not going to burn a nyy or cub uniform. I’m not going to write scathing letters to their players. It’s just a way to blow off steam. In interviews their players seem like nice guys, so I guess it’s the uniform and the media putting them on a pedestal is my complaint.

I had to warm up to it, but I’d like it. If we spent $26M-28M/2, there would still be enough left in the budget for a Monty/Snell type. A rotation of:

        Monty/Snell
        Bello
        Giolito
        Clevinger
        Crawford

Should be above average, and without the wild variance we’ve had in past years.

I’m not so sure about that. It could be similar. I was just comparing Giolito to Sean Manea. Giolito had a bad second half last year but he still almost doubled Manea’s WAR count for the year and has better career numbers than Manea for almost the same price.

And let’s be honest- you aren’t getting any pitcher cheap with all these inflated deals.

Many pitchers have had successful second half careers by finding a different way to get hitters out. If healthy, he is worth a shot when you look at some of the slop that takes the mound each night. As hard as it is to find, a guy who knows how to pitch should be able to give you four to five acceptable innings each night. And really, that’s all they ask for today.

Vegas: Don’t underestimate Clevinger. He’ll give his team everything he’s got. Went 7-8 innings in a few games, probably because he didn’t want the bullpen to blow yet another lead.

Probably because MLB investigated it and found no validity to the claim (if we are thinking of the same issue).
Granted, the claim I’m referring to happened after the season ended and Clevinger already signed with the White Sox but MLB didn’t suspend him, like they do with every player, they investigated, decided she was lying and Clev faced no actions.
He did have the whole Covid protocol issue which kind of led to him being traded to the Padres but as far as I know, that is it.

I would like him on my braves as a 5th starter. Sale has so much injury risk, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to have another potential upside inning eating vet to go along with sale. Having elder as solid depth in case someone inevitably does get hurt feels like a solid strategy. It’s doubtful they get him but if the price isn’t higher I’d be good with it

Ummmmmmm, I don’t know about as “Solid Depth”, for Bryce Elder. Stats wise he is the number 3 starter ahead of both Chris Sale and Charlie Morton. Neither of them have the stats to touch Elder right now. He is closer to Max Fried than Charlie Morton. I would like to see Clevinger battle for a rotation spot but currently, no spots. Winans would be depth. Ynoa needs to either be allowed to battle for the 5th rotation spot or be traded. I’m a diehard Braves fan and seen over the years how valuable/good pitchers, are wasted to be a taxi as a quick call up for 3 years until their abilities have wasted away. Glad they didn’t keep doing the same to Vaughn and allowed him to get a full spot somewhere. But this will be 3 years of Ynoa trying for a spot and as far as “Stuff” goes, it’s right behind Strider, some days can battle him for the top. Players are losing their value too much here.

Clevinger isn’t going to sign with a team where he might start. He will sign as a starter. Middle relief doesn’t pay well going forward.

I don’t want him in Atlanta.

One, they have better options for the rotation already on the roster that won’t cost 13m. As Waters Bat pointed out, if Elder holds form, Morton is probably the 5th starter stats-wise.

Two, they already have the depth to cover it if Sale and/or Morton miss some regular season starts. The young pitchers they have are more than capable of posting stats similar to Clevinger.

Three, if they were going to hand out another big FA contract this off-season, I’d rather they went out and got Hader. Another lights out lefty in the pen better helps them get past Philadelphia (their Achilles heel) and LA in the postseason.

Four, Clevinger’s past doesn’t suggest he’s a good human being.

This article is kind of ignorant. The guy got blackballed. He’s not signing with anyone. Numbers are trending in the wrong direction and the allegations are enough for people to stay away from him. Might as well sign a more superior talent in Trevor B. at the same risk level.

If MLB doesn’t have someone sign Bauer, then the grifter wins. The whole motivation for a shakedown is the threat to expose someone,.

As it stands today, Bauer is out tens pf millions, while the grifter is not out a penny.

Not sure he’s worth $13.6M per year to put up Forecasted Run Averages of 4.59 with an ERA – FRA of -0.823514, suggesting some regression in 2024.

I could see somewhere in the ballpark of $10M per year but in this inflated market for pitchers, he’ll probably get that $14M per year.

Wacha does have a stronger recent track record but it’s kinda crazy that he has reached free agency 5 times already, won 88 games with a career 3.96 era over 1288 innings, good for 16 fWAR yet prior to 2024 never made 8m in a season.

Clevinger was so mediocre for San Diego in 2022 that he only pitched 2 games (2.2 IP, 7 er) during their 3 postseason series yet got 12.5m in his first go at free agency.

Allegations that were unsubstantiated. Everyone has rights. The other players named in the comments have substantiated conduct violations that led to suspension. Courts are full of lawsuits for slander/defamation. Allegations that were not found to be truthful being published coupled with no contract could lead to a lawsuit.

Looks like almost everything else costing 40 percent more has also translated to the cost of signing a player.

What makes one unproven case more believable than another? The allegations against Clevinger were terrible – including throwing a chew-spit bottle at a child.

Bauer at least proved his main accuser was lying. The other allegations are super fishy. The one from Cincinnati is complete hogwash.

On one hand, Clevinger certainly fits in at $13 mil for a year or two, looking at what some other older/fading starters are getting.

    Lance Lynn
    Kyle Gibson
    Wacha
    Tyler Anderson
    Montas
    Flaherty

On the other hand, teams are beginning to discover that off the field deportment can lead to expensive and embarrassing costs that can no longer be ignored.

I do not know if the seeming lack of significant interest in Clevinger is due to non performance issues, nor am I inferring such, but the possibility exists.

Multiple franchises have been bitten big time by off the field miscreants, and as executives move between front offices, the number of organizations that are no longer willing to take those kind of gambles increase.

I think the Braves are 100% done with going after pitching, but I’d like them to take a chance on him as our #5. No hate against elder but a rotation that would have Fried, Strider, Sale, Morton, Clevinger would be absolutely sick. Fried and Morton with nasty breaking pitches, Strider with the power arm, and sale/MC coming in hot with funky arm angles… lord, I’d feel sorry for the team that had to go against us. Elder could be long relief or even a 6th starter against the weak teams to give our guys a bit of rest. Call me crazy, but that extra 13 mil a year to get MC would be worth it to me

Clevinger pitched to a 3.77 ERA in 131.1 innings with the White Sox in 2023. If he lands with a team competing for a playoff spot in 2024, I could see him reaching double-digit wins for the first time since 2019.

He’s made possibly worse choices than Bauer because Clevinger also had a baby by another woman around the same time. At least power got it all in writing and has video to prove his innocence.
