Yankees, Greg Allen Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | January 30, 2024 at 12:11pm CDT

Fleet-footed outfielder Greg Allen is returning to the Yankees organization on a minor league deal, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. The CAA client will be in camp as a non-roster invitee this spring. Joel Sherman of the New York Post adds that Allen would earn at a $1.1MM rate if selected to the big league roster. There’s another $400K available via incentives, per Sherman, which takes the form of a $50K bonus for every 50th plate appearance beginning at 150 and ranging through 500. Allen hasn’t reached 150 MLB plate appearances since 2019 and has never topped 291 plate appearances in a season.

It’s the third stint with the Yankees for the 30-year-old Allen, who was traded from San Diego to New York back in 2021. Allen appeared in 15 games that season and has since bounced from the Pirates, to the Red Sox, back to the Yankees, to the Brewers and now back to the Bronx.

Allen spent the bulk of the 2023 season in the Yankees organization but was designated for assignment in August and elected free agency after going unclaimed on waivers. He took just 28 plate appearances with the Yanks — his only big league action last season — and slashed .217/.333/.478 with a homer and three steals in that tiny sample. The rest of his season was spent in Triple-A, where he batted a combined .252/.388/.371 between the Yankees, Brewers and Red Sox organizations.

In parts of seven of MLB seasons, Allen is a .231/.300/.340 hitter with 11 homers, 31 doubles, eight triples, a 5.7% walk rate and a 23.4% strikeout rate in 828 plate appearances. He’s a switch-hitter with minimal pop but plus speed and strong defensive skills across all three outfield positions. Allen won’t have an easy path to a big league roster spot on a team whose outfield mix consists of Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo, Trent Grisham and Giancarlo Stanton (though he’ll primarily DH). That said, he’s a fine depth piece to stash in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to begin the season, which seems to be the likeliest role for him unless injuries create some openings on the big league roster during spring training.

The Yankees might as well just give Allen a lifetime spring training invite at this point

That would be unfair to Ryan Weber.

They are not trying to win. They are making profits. If they were trying to win they would have signed an ace, an ace closer, and at least 2 infielders. ie Chapman etc… .

“They are not trying to win”…The Yankees most DEFINITELY are “trying to win”. Their GM, Brian Cashman, is just not very good at it….You do realize they already signed the #1 “Ace” in baseball(Gerrit Cole)2 yrs ago for a record 324M, right? And you do realize the Yankees have spent the last 30+ years outspending every other team in MLB by a rather wide margin?

Outspending does not always equate to the best talent. You don’t always get what you pay for. Stanton & Aaron Hicks are good examples.

Wow Cole… yankee fans will always go right that signing. He looks as if he’s going to rot like Trout. Yankee fans better hope Cole doesn’t have an opt out clause. The Yankees have not signed anyone of merit since Cole. No one.

An 82 win season and a line up full of averages around the Mendoza line is their best attempt to “win”? Lmao what infielders that crush the ball have they signed? Torres is cheap. No one else hit. DJ hasn’t hit in years. The shortstop is a HUGE hole as is 1st and 3rd. The outfield is average. AJ included .267 average laughable. When AJ goes 3-4 years batting average.300 or better then he’s above average. Soto- we’ll see. And verdugo!? Lmao and Stanton can’t do more than DH or he’ll spend another 120 games on the DL. Good luck Yankees. Keep signing guys like Hicks and .187 bats lol

Savant only grades his sprint speed 40th percentile. Is he actually that fast ? Small sample size perhaps

Dude is almost 31 years old. I believe he may have lost a step from a few years ago. He’s definitely got above average, but not blazing speed in my opinion.

Have to get on base for it to matter. Guy can’t hit a scratch above .199. Waste of a AAA spot. Make room for a 19yo from the DR.

OMG he’s back again? Can we please try and get someone new? Please is that asking too much. Now trade Torres for a Starter, move DJ/Pereza to 2B and Sign Chapman for 3B. Of course the dream scenario is Unload Stanton and move Rizzo to DH and sign Bellinger. Am I really the only person who wants them to Unload Stanton and Torres??? Speak Now please

Torres has been a good ball player. Arguably most consistent of last year’s team. He’s not what he was hyped to be but he’s a good ballplayer.

I like Stanton. I feel they do him a disservice by never playing him in the field. He keeps getting hurt running bc he barely runs. Not saying he is an everyday LF but a game or two a week in LF should keep him loose. But if they were to move him, I’d get it and I wouldn’t be overly upset.

You’re only looking at his 2023 SSS. He hovered around 90% pre-2020. Not sure if age slowed him down though.

Greg Allen is guaranteed money from the Yankees every season. He’s the new Brett Gardner, always ready to take those one-year deals.

Does Oswaldo still have options? Allen could be the 5th Outfielder. I doubt it but could be. @NYG why should Yankees keep Torres. The Yankees need pitching and would rather the Yankees keep Peraza. Torres is one of the very few tradable assets they do have to get Pitching. DJL, Stanton, Rizzo are not going anywhere because of contracts. I would give Peraza or Vivas a chance to play 2B everyday. Torres will be a free agent next winter unload him now. Unfortunately the Yankees are not the Dodgers financially

That’s a low bar. Heres a novel idea, instead of all the garbage bin players Cashman is collecting, he could actually get one or two good players instead.
