Mets Notes: Diaz, Third Base, Alonso

By Anthony Franco | February 12, 2024 at 8:23pm CDT

Edwin Díaz threw a bullpen session on the back fields at Mets camp today, opening his Spring Training build-up. The two-time All-Star told reporters he had no obstructions over the winter after missing the entire 2023 campaign.

“It was my normal offseason, I did my normal routine,” Díaz told reporters (including Tim Britton of the Athletic). “I won’t be afraid to jump, to run. … I feel great.” That was the general expectation, as Díaz considered making a push to return at the end of last season before shutting things down with New York well out of contention.

The Mets are hopeful of a better showing than last year’s 75-87 performance. Díaz’s return is one of the reasons for optimism that they can hang around the playoff mix. He was the best reliever in baseball in 2022, when he struck out more than half the hitters he faced en route to a career-low 1.31 ERA across 62 innings.

While the team is hopeful of at least remaining in the Wild Card race, they’ve opted against making another all-in push for 2024. President of baseball operations David Stearns has pointed to the upcoming season as something of a evaluative year which they expect to serve as a stepping stone to a full-fledged run in 2025. That’s perhaps most evident in the team’s approach at third base and designated hitter. They’ve left the door ajar to making a run at a veteran DH while suggesting that the likelier outcome is giving playing time to Brett Baty and Mark Vientos to gauge whether they can serve important roles on the ’25 team.

Stearns left open the possibility for “some level of competition” among the in-house options at the hot corner this afternoon (relayed by Tim Healey of Newsday). Baty enters camp as the heavy favorite for the starting job despite his disappointing season. The former first-round pick and top prospect hit .212/.275/.323 with nine home runs in 389 plate appearances over his first full big league campaign. New York sent Baty to Triple-A for a few weeks in August as his struggles mounted. He raked in that brief minor league stint but again struggled after being recalled in September.

New York hasn’t done much to bring in serious competition for Baty this offseason. Stearns mentioned Vientos, Joey Wendle and Zack Short as others who could pick up playing time at the hot corner. Vientos is regarded as a below-average defender who is better served at first base or DH. He’d see the bulk of the DH reps unless the Mets somewhat surprisingly add a veteran bat like J.D. Martinez or Jorge Soler in the coming weeks. Wendle inked a $2MM free agent deal after hitting .212/.248/.306 in his second season with the Marlins. Short was a November waiver claim out of Detroit.

While Baty’s season could go in a number of directions, the Mets can feel safe about getting excellent production out of the other corner infield spot. Pete Alonso enters his platform year as one of the sport’s preeminent sluggers. Last month, he and the team agreed to a $20.5MM salary to avoid a hearing in his final winter of arbitration eligibility.

Throughout the offseason, the Mets have downplayed the chances of discussing a deal beyond the 2024 campaign. Stearns reiterated that the club didn’t have much expectation of signing Alonso to an extension. He called it “probably the most likely outcome” that the three-time All-Star hit the open market (link via Chuck King of the Associated Press). “Look, when you have a really talented player, who’s really good, who’s entering his final year of club control, who happens to be represented by Scott Boras, these things generally end up into free agency and we understand that,” he added.

The Mets have expressed confidence they could retain Alonso after he hits the open market, following the process of fellow Boras Corporation client Brandon Nimmo. Assuming he posts a typical platform year, Alonso should handily surpass the $162MM guarantee which Nimmo secured and could search for a contract approaching or exceeding $250MM.

Lol Mets Wilponian approach has returned.

Riding on alot of ifs with this roster while spinning hope based on nothing. Look for lots of empty seats at Citi Morgue this summer. I know I won’t be there.

I would love Robrock to throw out his prediction for the NY Mets 2024 season.
No one was spinning hope, as if you expect a 100 win season. The majority of sport books put the O/u at 82.5 which coincides with the word”competitive”. I think I have heard that word used more often from the Mets front office this off-season than any other word. Not “a lock for the playoffs”. Not “fighting for division champs.” Competitive. The game isn’t played on paper, either. Baseball is a long season and teams get streaky in both up aNd down directions. And injuries happen.
If that is not good enough for you, so be it. But this is no way Wilponian.

That is ridiculous. Top 2 shortstop in baseball, all star first baseman, best reliever in baseball, cy young contender, elite young talent, healthy Marte. Baseball prospectus has them winning 84.5 games and only a .3 percent behind the Phillies for making the playoffs. If you’re willing to bet on the Mets winning less then 70 games then I would take you up on that.

Mets won 75 games last yr – SP is a mess – no 3b LF or DH pen is so so – what important players has Stearns brought in to make you think this is an 84-85 win team ? who is the elite young talent you speak of ? There is no help coming from the minors only fill in guys that are just that fill in guys — our good minor league players are 2 or 3 yrs away if they pan out – that why I call them suspects

SP is not a mess. Senga is a top 5 cy young candidate. Quintana has been real solid starter for awhile now. Manatee was a great after adding new pitch. Houser is decent and Severino is expected to have a bounce back year. The pen has the best pitcher in baseball followed by decent arms and isn’t a mess either. Fransisco Alvarez is 22 years old and is considered an elite talent. Suggesting that he is not would just show that you want to argue. Baty and Vientos put up elite numbers in the minors and should have much better seasons. Williams, Acuna, Clifford, and Gilbert all have a chance to contribute this year. I know you will say everyone will have an ops of .650 or lower but you are just trying to get click bait and not being honest.

@EasternLeagueVeteran “Competitive,” however, is an almost meaningless word.

The Red Sox were competitive in 2023 and won 78. Cleveland was ‘competitive’ and won 76. Even the tawdry post-Deadline Mets went 25-26 their last 51 games. That’s competitive.

It’s a word designed to let the FO not say things like ‘we fully expect to be in the mix for the [last] wildcard.’

By definition it’s meaningless without further elaboration:

relating to or characterized by competition.
        “a competitive sport”

        h
        Similar:
        ruthless
        merciless
        aggressive
        fierce
        dog-eat-dog
        cutthroat
        h
        Opposite:
        gentlemanly

having or displaying a strong desire to be more successful than others. [NOTE that this bears zero relation to the Mets offseason.]

        “she had a competitive streak”
        h
        Similar:
        ambitious

        driven
        vying
        combative
        contentious
        aggressive
        insistent
        driving
        pushing
        zealous
        keen
        pushy
        go-ahead
[NOTE: nor did any of the above.]

        h
        Opposite:
        apathetic

        2.
as good as or better than others of a comparable nature.
[NOTE: now THAT fits—given it’s fundamentally meaningless.]

        A weasel word, in short.

Competitive like the 2023 Yankees, maybe. 2 games over .500.
Seems like the Vegas people think they can accomplish that.
If the Mets start the season hitting like the analytical bulldung said they should at the start of this year as they did last year, then for sure betting the under 82 is the bet.
They are not a three true outcomes type team, so they have to manufacture runs the old fashioned way they did in 2022. Hit after git moving runners along.
Putting their eggs in two old men’s baskets in the starting rotation wasn’t smart, but then again skipping the huge investment in deGrom was a good move.
At some point they have to really test their prospects. This is the year. Save the long-term dollars for next year’s FA’s. And maybe if some young arms come thru, you won’t have to pay thru the nose to get 25 guys for opening day 2025.
But if you want a championship, i suggest you lay some cash on the Braves or Dodgers or Astros. Everyone after that is competitive

David Stearns and Cohen already know what $ Alonso is seeking and they aren’t going there. This upcoming season will be losing ugly. Diaz will be a useless closer as the Mets won’t be able to get him in the Game for save opportunities.

Yes Cohen is the new Wilpon only more financially reckless stuck in the Luxury Tax with drafting penalties. David Stearns is the new Wilpon dumpster diver promising meaningful games in September. Hard to believe he is recycling the Wilpon operating strategy.

Both Diaz and Senga have opt outs after 2025 so they can’t be regarded as long term assets. What a mess!

The Mets aren’t that bad. The OF (Nimmo-Bader-Marte) and MI (McNeil-Lindor) will be a very good defense and a great benefit to the pitchers. The team will be better with Joey Wendle at 3B. Brett Baty was the worst defensive 3B in MLB. 1B Pete Alonso and C Francisco Alvarez/Omar Narvaez also lack defensive range. It all depends on their health.

Why not use Alonso at DH and try out 1B from the MiLB prospects?

Do you actually think Alonso would allow this in his walk year? Every story would include conjecture that he’s not up for the rigors of fielding 1B any longer.

He’d be a continual disruption even if he tried to go along. The stories would be a continual disruption.

(Yes, stars [or in Alonso’s case, ‘stars’] do have a lot of leverage.]

Do you really want the daily lead on the Mets to be how this is working out, in order to push a 45 or 50FV prospect from the minors faster than he warrants, to MLB?

Do you even know which prospect you want to push to the majors.

You often contradict yourself in a single comment by implying the franchise is dumpster diving while simultaneously complaining they spent too much money.

You’re very emotional about it and it makes your opinions hard to take seriously.

          @Mets6986??

“Do you seriously think the Mets are trading Alonso if they are competing for the playoffs?”
-that’s not what you said and changing your point is not a sign you should be taken seriously. You said they’d only trade if they were 10 games out which is arbitrary nonsense.

“They would have traded him already if they wanted the return”
-Not even close to true and also very far from sensible. He just had a down year, why trade him with his value low? He’s about to play his ass off for a big contact, his value will be highest at the trade deadline which should honestly be pretty obvious.

“The factual evidence is what the Mets leadership says and does and they aren’t looking to trade him” – this is jibberish

It’s complete jibberish on your response. If Alonso has a monster year then the Mets are contenders and there is no way they’re trading him. No one’s trade value goes up for less then a half of a season.

Can you stop making false equivalencies? The Mets can be bad while Pete has a good year. Pete can hit 50 homers in a season Mets win 50 games. Full stop. Please grasp that before commenting.

“No one’s trade value goes up for less than half a season”. It’s nuts that you can fit so many incorrect things into a 12 word sentence.

Trade value is derived from player value IN RELATION to team need; if a team needs a power hitting DH/1b more at the deadline than they do during the season then the value of that player went up.

Trade deadline is more than half the season.

Of course player value changes over the course of the year. Did you think teams are evaluating players based on what the player is ranked when MLB The Show drops?

You really have no idea how ANY of this works.

No, you don’t. Teams trade players with control years to increase value. Just because you try to talk down to people doesn’t make you smart. Using MLB the show as any part of your argument just shows that you are just rambling for ramblings sake.

I should really just ignore/mute you but I’m bored at work so I’ll try to explain where you’re falling short here:

“Teams trade players with control years to increase value.” WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Pete has no controllable years, he’s in a walk year. WTF? They’re holding on to Pete until teams are willing to overpay for him at the deadline, that should be obvious I can’t believe you don’t understand that. You absolutely have to be a troll.

“Using MLB the show as any part of your argument just shows that you are just rambling for ramblings sake.” – YOU SAID player value doesn’t change during a season (absolutely bonkers opinion) and in response I asked: then what determines player value, MLB THE SHOW rankings? You missed that point which I’m sure is common for you.

“Just because you try to talk down to people doesn’t make you smart. ” – Ditto dude; at least I’m coherent and not using strawman tactics and changing the conversation when you’re pinned.

Bryant had perceived athleticism for multiple positions, so he was a 3b/LF that could eventually age into a 1b/DH.

Alonso has the perceived athleticism of a lethargic bear. He’s not delivering defense or baserunning on the contracts front end with his hitting. So it’s 1b/DH into DH/Cut.

@920. That’s the trade off between him and Bryant. Less power with more baserunning and position versatility. Alonso is power, and thats pretty much it. He’s not multifaceted. He’s a big dude that rakes. That’s not a valuable skill set unless you have built a fan base in the largest market. He’s prince fielder in New York.

Agreed, and even accounting for inflation since Bryant’s deal, I don’t see Alonso matching $182M. There aren’t enough dumb and rich teams left for that.

Based on health and availability I say he is but not by much.
In theory Bryant can play 3B/1B and OF but he is hurt alot
          Availability is important

On another thought maybe PHI can work out a trade so Bryant can play with his NV friend Harper. Have to include some money back
I don’t think COL wants Castellanos

You can look at their age and performance as they get closer to free agency. As he gets older you can’t assume he’s playing over 150 games/year across that contract. You look at his skill set and apply age regression to it when it comes to reaction time, bat speed, foot speed.

He’s elite. But wouldn’t want to pay him over $25 million/year more than 6-7 years.

No way this team is competitive again in 2025. With all the 1 year contracts they’ve signed this year, they’ll be starting completely very again. The entire rotation outside of Senga will have to be replaced. Most of the bullpen and bench will also have to be replaced. And to top it all, they’ll have to either extend Alonso or sign a replacement bat. No way they can accomplish all that in 1 offseason. If they genuinely wanted to compete in 2025, they should’ve signed some multi year deals to guys they can build around.

Have you taken a peak at next year’s free agent crop? It’s much better than the current one. If Cohen wants to spend, they can field a very competitive team even if Alonso signs elsewhere. The Mets have also stockpiled prospects whom would have another year of development. These guys can be traded for MLB players.

This team has too many holes to fill in one off season – players worth a flip should have been added this winter so next off season you didnt have to go look for 8-10 players — and who is too say Cohen will spend next winter ? Pete will be gone by the AS break and the new lie will be well we are doing a total reset and then Diaz will be gone – Mets are a 67 – 70 win team this upcoming yr

They are hoping 3 or 4 AAA prospects make the leap and provide some energy by late 2024 OR early 2025

They will need to sign (3) B+ Free agents in 2024/25 offseason or trades
      Maybe 2 top Starting Pitchers

I like Soto but he wants too much $ His defense is average
It would be 24+1 AROD revisited

Carlos Beltran type OF is the skills the NYM need

Bingo. Stearns is lying through his teeth and it doesn’t take a genius to realize, he is trying to earn cohen’s trust by saving him tax money this year. Consider it a financial reset. But I don’t see them signing/trading for 4 reputable starters. He’s banking on Peterson and megill actually being successful and a prayer that one of these replacement level pitching prospects turns into degrom. Boy how quick the mighty have fallen. Cohen learned his lesson and is taking the small market approach for now. Another reason why they aren’t pursing Alonso.

I have been saying the same thing – Cohen ran up the surrender flag in June last yr – then made some bad trades and ate most of the $$$ – should have held on to everyone and this past winter looked for a DH 3b LF – the team would have been a playoff contender – Mets problem is they do not scout well and firing a HOF manager and replacing him with a loser didnt help – I didnt see teams breaking down the door to hire Stearns – another loser – btw Senga can opt out after 2025 which he will

I can’t imagine the entitlement it must take to repeatedly call someone a loser before spring training even starts, let alone his first game. Here’s some trivia: You know who else had zero major league wins as a manager before their first game? Every manager who’s ever managed in this game! That’s right, even Casey Stengel had zero manager wins before his first game. Let me know where you work so I can come and let you know how bad you are at it.

Mets trade Alonso to the Mariners in July and eat most of his remaining salary. M’s give up a pitcher they don’t want to give up, but Alonso catches fire in Seattle and carries them to the AL West title. Use your imagination from here………

It just doesn’t seem to be the Mariners way to trade for a rental with no plan of extending the player, and giving up anything noteworthy to get him. As a TDL trade, I think there’s a bigger likelihood of the M’s trading for Ben Gamel than for Alonso.

I could see the Dodgers making a deal like that if it was not 2024, but they have Freeman at 1B and Ohtani at DH, and they’re not looking for a platoon for either. Alonso would be a very expensive bench bat albeit a great one.

It will be interesting to see how new NYM Manager Carlos Mendoza uses Diaz to try to save games

(Insert joke here – Diaz probably won’t have many opportunities Ouch!)

BUT if lightning strikes and say he gets say 45 opportunities will they occasionally try to __s t r e t c h__ him to more than just 1 inning.

Many closers don’t like doing that and/or because their success rate goes down (OR don’t want to over use them assuming they will get a chance the next day etc.)

Success of Baty, Vientos and Bader, Marte will change a lot me thinks
Starting Pitching and BP looks like C+/B-

    Win total prediction 84-86 WINS

Possibly more if All Star game break trade and/or AAA prospects brought up

Pete will get every bit of 7 years at 27 mil per. 189 minimum total if he hits .240, 100rbi and 44+ homers this year. And possibly 210 total on the high end. If Pete hits 250 with 55+ homers 120brbi he will get every bit of 240 over 8 years.and the METS should pay it without question and only a bonehead troll would think different.

WTF people? He’s a career .290/.390/.507 hitter in the minors, you don’t think he should even get a full season to prove it?
Look at Austin Riley, he’s a top 5 3B right? His rookie year he batted .226/.279/.471 in 80 games. Then in 2020, he played 51 of the 60 games in the shortened season and batted .239/.301/.415. Since then, he’s been top 10 and MVP every year. It doesn’t always click right away for every player. Give the kid a chance! /rant over
