The Orioles are in agreement with righty Julio Teherán on a minor league contract with an invite to big league camp, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post (X link). The deal comes with a $2MM base salary if he cracks the MLB roster for the Mato Sports Management client.
Teherán can battle for a rotation or long relief job with Baltimore. The 33-year-old started 11 of 14 big league outings with the Brewers a year ago. He allowed 4.40 earned runs per nine across 71 2/3 innings. Teherán showed excellent control, keeping his walks under the 5% threshold. He doesn’t miss many bats, though, running a modest 17.4% strikeout percentage behind an 8.9% swinging strike rate.
That was Teherán’s 12th big league campaign. The two-time All-Star has bounced between a few clubs since leaving the Braves after the 2019 season. He was blitzed for a 10.05 ERA with the Angels in 2020. Injuries kept him to one start for Detroit the next year and he was out of affiliated ball two seasons ago.
Teherán doesn’t throw particularly hard at this stage of his career. His fastball has steadily dipped over his major league run. He averaged an even 90 MPH with his sinker a year ago. While opponents teed off on that pitch, Teherán found a bit more success with his secondary offerings.
Baltimore has some questions at the back of the starting staff. With Kyle Bradish and John Means opening the season on the injured list, the O’s are down to Corbin Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez and Dean Kremer as rotation locks. Cole Irvin and Tyler Wells appear the frontrunners for the last two spots. Bruce Zimmermann and Jonathan Heasley are each on the 40-man roster as depth options.

Amazing that Julio is still pretty young!

The guy has pitched to Jason Bay. That tells you a lot about how long he’s been around.

I didn’t know this was Minor League Trade Rumors…
gbs42
Did you create an account just to make asinine comments?
DonkMcCronklin
Minor rumors ultimately become major issues.
Look at Matt Gaetz or Wander Franco
Braves_saints_celts
And what happens if he makes the roster and earns that 2m base salary? It then becomes a major league signing. This should have been reported because it might turn out to be a majors signing and not a minors signing. What about the players that sign split contracts? Are you complaining that the time they spend in the minors is reported? Are you new the mlbtr? Sounds like it.
Yanks2
Should they also report that Blake Snell will sign with the Yankees for 10 years for 700m because it may happen?
gbs42
CP, if a credible source had that information, sure. Maybe it would be 95% deferred over 50 years.
This is a rumors site. Says so right in the name and everything.
Yanks2
There’s no credible sources anywhere in baseball. It’s all false articles to persuade the reader to continue visiting their site
Just like when MLBTR reported Ohtani signed with the Blue Jay’s in 2023 and it turns out a little later they retracted their article and said he was still unsigned
Also like when Heyman said Judge was nearing a deal with the Giants and the next day he signed with the Yankees
gbs42
Did MLBTR report Ohtani had signed with Toronto or link to rumors that he was likely to do so?
Judge was close to signing with his hometown Giants until the Yankees matched the offer to keep him in pinstripes.
MLB Trade RUMORS…again part of the site’s name.
They do report actual signings, too, so maybe skip every article other than those.

Read these using common sense and you’ll be a lot better off.

It is factual that an MLB team, the Baltimore Orioles, signed Teheran. You are out of line with your bitching.
stymeedone
No but this is not he may sign with Baltimore. He did sign with Baltimore. This is more like should they report the incentives in a Snell contract because he may opt out, or he may pitch a certain number of innings.

Since MLBTR won’t do it
Teheran had a 4.67 xFIP (107 xFIP-) last year
FanGraphs projects him for a 5.23 FIP this year

More to come…

gbs
MLBTR doesn’t have much of a track record of posting xFIP-, or projections.
Miniscule chance that those will be part of what is to come.
DonkMcCronklin
Teherán used to be a pitcher that outperformed his FIP. But, like a lot of pitchers, his era later in his career will make his career stats fall more in line with his fip (assuming he’s given the opportunity).
*unless he switches to full time relief. But, I don’t think he has the repertoire for that.

Good thing he won’t be pitching independent of fielders on the diamond.

It’s true he doesn’t strike anyone out but oddly he did have more strikeouts in the minors last year than one would expect. Not sure how much time he spent in A ball but probably only a start or 2. He’s still trying to figure it out. He has improved his control a ton. With the braves he never had the best control (even when he didn’t walk a lot). Definitely limited upside tho. Nice spot starter.
Rishi
Julio is the kind of guy who, if you watch him, you like him. He’s a competitor, who always remains calm and isn’t afraid of anyone (Bryce Harper included). I like Bryce a lot too. I picture Bryce keeping a photo of Arcia on the wall so he can stare at it for the 10th time trying to coax it into a fight (or at least for practice). And even after doing it 10 times not seeing that he is the one being a d0uche at this point-and not caring) (and not seeing that the picture is a mirror for his temporarily bruised pride). It’s part of what makes him great tho.

Wish that 2 million was added to an offer for Montgomery. He’s the pitcher the O’s need.
Ra
At what cost? The “Six years, $150MM” MLBTR predicted? Sounds like a bad gamble.
stymeedone
If you add it to their current offer to Montgomery, it moves it up to… $2MM on a one year deal.
Lorenzen’s price would fit better.

I think more of Jair Jurrgens or Felix Hernandez

Isn’t Julio Teheran spelled Trevor Bauer?
Susannah
Sure does not look like it.

You will just have to squint harder =)

I didn’t know Teheran gets his dick off by beating women. Is he also a clubhouse cancer?
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
That is really cute, the mainstream media Smh, always so consistent on these matters
In fact, double SMH
Ra
Oh, Teheran doesn’t get his dick off by beating women. And he’s not a clubhouse cancer. Good to know. Better signing then.

Hypocrisy abounds
stymeedone
Congrats to Ra on becoming mainstream media!
Ra
I didn’t report that four women have accused Bauer of beating and/or raping them.
Ra
There is no hypocrisy considering I have never been accused of beating and raping women.

O’s need to raise the bar higher if they’re looking to take the next level. They are asking their offense to outscore their pitching deficiencies.
Os1995
Os were the 7th best pitching staff in baseball last year and they got Burnes to replace Bradish. They should be able to get similar results as last year if not better results because Grayson should take a step forward as well.
its_happening
That’s not enough.
Os1995
Do you have any reasons why you think the Orioles won’t be a top 10 pitching staff this year? I am open to hearing an argument if you think I have it wrong.
its_happening
First, you don’t have the depth in the event of an injury. Already there is an injury that could be bigger than it is.
Second, Yankees lineup much improved. Still some thump in the AL East. If your staff faced the Yankees more in the second half than the first in 2023, those numbers become a bit skewed. Same with Tampa who had the injury bug. If they are healthy, they aren’t scoring runs on the Kremer’s and Means of the world?
Third, your bullpen has been very good. Will that continue in 2024 with more injuries?
Four, do you really believe your SP is good enough to shut down the best AL lineups? If there is a shred of doubt (and there should be), you need another SP.
stymeedone
Not enough for what?
its_happening
World Series?
Os1995
The Rangers (18th) and Diamond backs (20th) were the worst pitching staffs that made the playoffs. Seems like it’s more important to get hot in the postseason than building a balanced roster.
its_happening
Os that’s a BS stat. Because Texas added Scherzer and Montgomery at the deadline. The ranking is irrelevant. Complete change when you land a 1-2 and make your de facto 1 a number 3.
Zona also had a young arm come up to bolster their rotation late in the year, plus a couple bad Colorado outings will kill the pitching stats.
But if you’re ok with coming up short in 2024 that’s fine. The Yankees seem to want to win more than your Orioles.
LordTeaboBaggins
1) Burnes
2) Rodriguez
3) Kremer
4) Wells
5) Irvin
And as depth, there’s Zimmermann and Akin.
It’s really not as bad as all that
its_happening
You didn’t say it was great, Teabo.
Ubaldo Jimenez
They don’t really have pitching deficiencies, for those of us with eyes and brains.
AE86
Yes they do, as evidenced by the playoffs and burning up the bullpen. They need guys that can go out there and go at least 6 innings. They have problems because Bradish probably won’t be here for the full season, Means is shaky health-wise, And Wells lets up a ton of homers. You also don’t have your lights out closer anymore and have “powder keg” Craig.
Os1995
You are using 3 games as your argument? Small sample size randomness happens in the postseason. I would think you would go by the 162 sample size that showed the Orioles were the 7th best pitching staff last year. Burnes replaces Bradish. Means didnt pitch much last year anyway so any innings we get from him only improves the staff. Kimbrell is a downgrade from Bautista. Tyler Wells does give up a lot of HR’s but that was the case last year as well. I replacing the 60ish innings Bautista threw with Kimbrell is expected to add an extra 12-14ish runs allowed over the course of the season which would put them around 10th best pitching staff.
Ubaldo Jimenez
Brownsbacker – Wells is excellent, regardless of homer rate. The pen is fine. Bradish is throwing, so you don’t know he’ll be gone all year. Sure, Bautista is out… but there’s plenty of relievers. The starters and the lack of offense lost the postseason for the O’s. The O’s pitching was routinely better and more consistent than the hitters for the entirety of last year. The hitting metrics showed luck – the pitching stats didn’t.
AE86
Wells is excellent only if he is not walking people or letting up hits. That homer rate is alarming, especially considering the Yards moved the fences back to reduce the amount of homers given up.
You never bet on an unsure thing. I won’t beleive Bradish or Means are fine until they come back and last the rest of the season and perform well. To rely on them to do so is unwise.
Tyler Wells is the poster boy for luck in pitching. You can’t keep allowing that many HR’s and expect to have long term success.
its_happening
Ubaldo doesn’t watch baseball beyond September apparently.
Ubaldo Jimenez
Ubaldo watches baseball all year, and three bad games all year means nothing. Get bent.
its_happening
Incorrect. Beyond name-calling you aren’t useful in any baseball capacity. Clean your city or watch basketball where Baltimore doesn’t have a team.
Ubaldo Jimenez
Baltimore is fine, quit lying.
its_happening
Only lie here is you claiming to know baseball. Didn’t mean to expose you but you asked.
Ubaldo Jimenez
Nonsense. Now run along and play in traffic, boy.
Ra
It’s just a minor league signing. It’s been said that there is no such thing as a bad minor league signing.
harrycarey
To watch this guy last season was amazing. While it’s easy to look at the reference page and tell someone this guy sucks or is great is one thing. But the guy helped the Brewers win a division and he was a pitcher! May not have a great fastball but when he was in trouble he often got out of it or limited damage and gave his team a chance to win the game. As a baseball fan you watch and tell yourself he is done but then escapes like a magician. He did this in May, June and July as Brewer pitchers hit the IL.so it was not a one time act against a team. Each next opponent had tape to see it and often did not offer a beating to say your done. I hope he does well and gets himself opportunity to earn another playoff share.
AE86
Dumpster Diving for Depth. Smart signing, low risk for a potential spot starter or long man out of the pen.
