The Opener: Boras Four, Cubs, Hernandez

By Nick Deeds | February 26, 2024 at 8:15am CDT

As Spring Training continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:

1. The “Boras Four” is down to three:

The big news over the weekend was center fielder Cody Bellinger returning to the Cubs on a three-year deal worth $80MM with opt-outs after the 2024 and 2025 seasons. With free agency’s top remaining hitter now signed, the so-called “Boras Four” is now down to three, with southpaws Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery as well as third baseman Matt Chapman still lingering on the market. Now that one of the quartet of high-profile Boras Corporation clients has agreed to a short-term deal, will any of the others follow suit?

Montgomery has been loosely connected to the Red Sox throughout the offseason, though the latest reporting has indicated Boston only has interest in the event that his price comes down. It’s a similar story for Snell, who reportedly had an offer on the table from the Yankees last week with negotiations seemingly at a standstill. Chapman’s market is somewhat murkier at this point. He had been connected to Chicago prior to the club’s reunion with Bellinger, but the Cubs have not indicated a willingness to surpass the luxury tax — which would likely preclude them from further significant additions. The Giants have also been connected to Chapman frequently throughout the winter, with some reporting indicating the third baseman is their “top target,” though it’s unclear where negotiations between the sides stand at this point.

2. Bellinger deal to be made official:

As noted by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Cubs and Bellinger have wasted no time in moving forward now that a deal is in place, with Bellinger having already arrived at camp to take his physical yesterday. Assuming the physical didn’t turn up anything unexpected, that could put the deal in position to be officially announced sometime today. The Cubs have a full 40-man roster as things stand, meaning they’ll need to make a corresponding move to make room for Bellinger.

Barring a surprise injury announcement, the club has no clear candidates for the 60-day injured list, meaning that they’ll likely need to designate a player towards the back of the 40-man for assignment. Another option would be to work out a trade that would clear roster space. Chicago benefited from that sort of trade earlier this winter when the club acquired infield prospect Michael Busch and right-hander Yency Almonte for non-40-man prospects Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope in a deal that cleared two roster spots for the Dodgers.

3. Hernandez nearing decision?

Veteran utility player Enrique Hernandez was reportedly nearing a decision entering the weekend. While no deal ultimately came together, a list of four finalists for the 32-year-old’s services was reported that suggested he was choosing between the Giants, Padres, Twins, and Angels. Hernandez is among the most versatile players in the game with the glove. He’s spent more than a thousand innings in center field and at both middle infield spots in addition to hundreds of innings in the outfield corners, significant time at third base, and even occasional cameos at first. He touts a solid .257/.343/.458 slash line against lefties, though he’s typically posted below-average offense against righties, which limits his ceiling as an everyday player. Nonetheless, Hernandez figures to improve the depth of any club he signs with significantly. Which team will ultimately land the veteran?

He’s not signing a straight 1 year deal. If anything, he will end up with a deal structured like Bellingers, to save face for Boras.

You can tell that this all all the players doing. All of the remaining players don’t like spring training anyways and feel that they can sign at any time and it won’t affect their year at all. Boras doesn’t influence the players at all. He should be called Saint Boras. Players are generally just being lazy.

Nah, it’s no coincidence that all the top FA’s remaining were his clients. They did have to agree to that strategy though, I’d assume. Considering that he ultimately works for them. Plus, he’s kept on with this tactic lately. The TV deal made this blow up on him though. Seems like players who miss significant amounts of ST fall behind and if they wait long enough, they end up having to stay for “extended ST”.

And Boras, the super agent, definitely picks and chooses who he’s willing to represent. Who knows, he may tell them it’s my way or the high way because I know what’s best. We don’t know.

Phillies needed Bellinger or Hader. Starting rotation is plenty good.

Hader’s price never dropped, but Bellinger’s dropped all the way to where he made perfect sense for the Phillies and they just sat there.

The player has a say. My guess is he views this as a one year deal to prove 2023 is repeatable. He’d be more comfortable doing that returning to the Cubs.

NO. Every player wants to play for the Phillies in 2024. By 2026 it may well be the opposite.

          MLB moves fast like that.

Lord – True, but there’s a huge risk involved.

He turned down offers of over $150M, imagine if his peripherals last year prove to be accurate and he has a horrible 2024 season.

Worse yet, imagine if he has another couple injury-plagued seasons.

Personally I wouldn’t gamble with that kind of money, but it’s his choice and he made it.

Did Bellinger have an offer of 150? I feel like there were crickets around his free agency. It was reported Snell had an offer from the Yankees for 150, so we’ll see if he beats that.

Players who sign up with Boras do so because they want top dollar. Almost always works out for the players, which is why he gets so many top ones. Pete Alonso fired his agent last October and hired Boras. I believe he wants to stay a Met, but I more believe he wants the most money. There is risk with the Boras way. Injury, for one. That hurt Michael Conforto.

These are player decisions, from hiring Boras to deciding which offers to take or not. They’ll all be fine. As I noted elsewhere, after two bad years with the Dodgers and getting DFA’d, Boras has landed Bellinger nearly $100 million over four years with an opportunity for a lot more. I doubt Bellinger will be firing Boras.

I’d love nothing more than for Detroit to break through, but sadly I think you’re dreaming a little if you think they’re better than the Twins, who are the only legitimately competitive team in that division even with their slow offseason. I personally think MIN > CLE > KC > DET > CWS this year, but the bottom four is really a crapshoot.

Best of luck to the Tigers, though! They’re my favorite team in the central and the
company I work for is based out of Ann Arbor, so it’d be awesome if they finally pulled something together.

I could go either way on which of DET or KC is better this year. But Detroit’s core is mostly developed at this point and has repeatedly demonstrated that they aren’t good enough to win, while Kansas City’s is unseasoned enough to potentially take some steps forward. I’d bet they both finish with losing records, but yeah, I’d rather be the Royals. Time will tell!

ZiPS and FanGraphs project win totals in the mid-70s for both teams, so regardless of which one of us is right, I’d be shocked if either squad winds up a division winner. But it’d be fun to watch in either case! It’s been Cleveland v. Minnesota for like 5 years now, I’m ready for a mix-up.

True. Not just that, Snell got his 5yr pre-arb extension after first CYA. Wasn’t that good next 4 campaigns when his pay was fixed and suddenly revved up in walk year.
Looks like a load management/needs money on the line player. Wouldn’t trust him in 2024 after emptying his tank last season.

The issue with Snell is he is pissed Yamamoto got 12/325 and has has NOT pitched 1 inning against mlb hitters nor has he won the CY award twice for that matter but again the Dodgers blew up the entire free agency system spending over $1 BILLION on an injured DH with 2 TJ surgeries who may never pitch the same again plus a starter who has not proven he will hold up against ML hitters, larger baseball and pitching every 5 day vs once a week. Snell has the right to want more but thats not how free agency works!

I’m not denying Snell is good, or at least has two great seasons under his belt, but I’d sure be wary of getting a few 2019 Snell seasons when I’m paying for 2018 or 2023 Snell.

And god, he gives up a ton of walks. It’s a lot of money for a guy who blows up his pitch count going for Ks and leaves after 5 innings on most nights.

We can mock the Bellinger deal–but what it is consists of an $80M guarantee for him against of poor performance./injury. He only needs to have one good season in the next three to make even more money. Yes, this is a downer, but Bellinger will not be looking for coins in the seat cushions.

It’s a good deal for him. Since he bombed in his last two years in LA, he’s secured close to $100M over four seasons, with the opportunity to opt out and get even more.

Curious to see where Chapman lands. Doesn’t seem to have much of a market and I don’t really think the Cubs and Giants (mentioned as possible suitors in the article) will get him unless he signs a very short deal, maybe with opt-outs like Bellinger’s deal.

Wish I could show you some of the absolutely horrid, little league miscues Hernandez made as SS for the Red Sox. Butcher on the dirt. Was going to set the team record for errors by a shortstop (122 years), but ended up back at the Dodgers.

Yeah that is my concern if he gets signed by the Giants, I am assuming that the reason they are looking at him is the constant barrage of criticism that all of the SS position is made up youth with Luciano as the starter and backed up by guys like wisely and Otto Lopez. I think that is why in general they are looking for bodies but if the guy isn’t that good it may be just better to play the youth

If they did play that many times, I’d get Keston Hiera as well — it sucks when the other team’s bozos blow up your team and look worse than Randy Johnson (the Big Unit) in the batter’s box against everyone else.

I licking my chops for Bellinger to have another decent year similar to 2023, opt out and Yankees sign him to replace Rizzo at 1B and insurance in case Soto does not return. Heck Bellinger on 6/180 a hell of alot better than 13/550 Soto going to cost for similar offense output albeit better defense and speed on bases playing a position Yankees have no depth in minors.

If bellinger was in play for NY it was this year. Even w lack of playing time around him if you can lock up a foundation piece that suits you long term at 1b and still plays above average cf you do it. This off-season has just been a ton of black balling across the board and Tony Clark and the mlbpa need to stand up for it.

It’s 20/20 hindsight, but I think at $80M/3, Belli would’ve been a much better fit for CF for the NYY.

Sorry I’m not a one trick pony. Spreewell infamously turned down a 3 year 21 million pay cut from Minnesota following the Joe Smith debacle that destroyed Kevin Garnetts only chance at a championship in Minnesota. His infamous line was 10 million won’t feed my family. He never played in the league again following this, but made 97 million in career earning on the court and who knows how much money he actually banked off spinners for rims. He made the right call. Was blackballed and made more money off the court than he ever did on it.

    • PiratesPundit51

The Cards need to be about 9 deep in SP depth, since it’s a given that Gray and Matz will end up on the shelf at least once this season. None of the other 3 have ever been great pitchers, and they’re all beyond the point where it’s hard to think they’ll be anything better than what they are. None of them miss many bats, I’d expect at least one of them to be atrocious to the point of pitching themselves out of the rotation.

Beyond Liberatore (who could be eventually be good) and Zach Thompson — both of whom will be needed during the season — the Cards’ cupboard looks somewhat bare. Their bullpen stacks up as the 2nd best in the division from top to bottom behind the Pirates, but with a few guys who can’t seem to stay healthy.

They are also going to need Donovan, Nootbar and Walker to produce, to offset the declines in Arenado and Goldy (both of whom looked mortal last season). I suspect they’ll need to score 5-6 runs in most games that Gray doesn’t start, which might be a big ask. I don’t see a hitter coming out of nowhere from the minors as in previous years, as most of the Cards’ best prospects are AA or below. The depth just isn’t there.

I’m not saying the Cardinals couldn’t win the division, but they need health on their side more than just about every other team in the division. Since Matz alone makes that almost impossible, their best path to winning the division is to blow everyone out of the water for the first 6 weeks of the season, then hang on for dear life when injuries start piling up.

Media should switch reference narrative to address ‘holdouts’ or mercenaries or something. Put some pressure there instead of sensationalizing the process.

Asking for an extra $20M or $25M is too much to comprehend.

Something is only worth what another is willing to pay for it. You can absolutely refuse to accept less as a player, but you can also reach a point where not only do you not get what you think you are worth, you end up with less than you were offered in the first place.

When I was a kid, our next door neighbor had a pristine ’49 Dodge. It was always worth more than what people were offering. Our neighbor ended up with a pile of worthless rust.

It might be a factor for some teams, but there’s a whole bracket of teams whose local TV deals completely exclude them from the top-end market, tax or otherwise. It shouldn’t be that hard to understand, given how your team holds the Nationals hostage on the amount of TV money they can get. Should Baltimore be forced to compete for local TV dollars with Washington, they’d be in the same boat as most of the rest of the league.

The “ruining the game” explanation lies almost completely on the failure of large market owners and the top tier of the MLBPA to look 10 to 15 years down the road to reach a reasonable agreement to curb labor costs and distribute player’s salaries more equitably. A super majority of the players earn less than the league average – most players careers will end with perhaps $1.5 million earned (after taxes) for their entire career, and most won’t accrue enough service time for any kind of reasonable pension.

The reason these guys remain unsigned is because even the Yankees and Dodgers are aware of their long-term commitments and can only take on so much (or risk being a Stephen Strasburg away from being a dumpster fire for 3-4 years – hi Nats!), while the rest of the league operates with smaller, less stable revenue streams. Writers blame the luxury tax because they’d get blackballed by the players for writing anything resembling what I just did, even though the majority of the union would stand to benefit from actually changing things.
